Drop Through or Top Mount Longboard? - FAQ Friday - Tactics

  • Should I choose a drop through or top mount longboard? Both mounting options have advantages and disadvantages for different types of riding. Tactics Downhill Skate Team rider Ross Druckrey explains how drop through and top mounting affect the way your board rides, and how that applies to carving, cruising, freeride, and downhill skateboarding.
    In general, drop through mounting makes your board lower, more stable, and easier to push, but gives it less grip when cornering. This makes it great for cruising, carving, long distance pushing, and beginners who want to learn to slide. Top mounting gives you a taller ride height that translates to a more responsive, divey turn with more leverage on your trucks, and more grip when cornering. This makes it great for cruising, carving, freeride, and downhill. However, top mounts are less stable and harder to control at higher speeds, so drop through mounting is often preferred for beginners who are learning to freeride and downhill.

    I started riding a month ago. I've ended up getting both styles of boards. They both have their uses. The drop through is a much more forgiving ride. I like it better for braking. I put my heel right on the wheel. It's quite effective.

    Stability difference between a drop through and a drop down for a FAQ Friday, and then compare to a board that is both drop through and drop down

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a drop down depends a lot on the board deck specifically. I know a few drop down decks that are top mounted, yet are just as long as a regular drop through deck. I also know a drop down deck that is like easily an inch or 2 (?) lower to the ground than my drop through deck. That one should be theoretically more stable, but I'd imagine it being closer to the ground also means less clearing for turning, obstacles and so on. Everything comes at a trade off. Top mounted + drop down seems pretty popular for freestyle though.

    Serious question: Wouldn't changing the drop through to top mounted position put a different strain on the drop through deck for which it was not designed? I'm considering converting the drop through longboard I've got to top mounted (I believe it can be done just fine in terms of screws and such), however as I'm trying to do tricks with it, it shouldn't become weaker. Is it 'safe' to try?

    • @tacticsboardshop
      @tacticsboardshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be fine to switch up the trucks, people switch the trucks from drop-through to top mount frequently and are fine. When the trucks are through the deck, the board is hanging by the hardware, and when the trucks are mounted to the bottom, the deck is resting on top of the baseplate which means more of the surface area of the deck is being supported. I'd still be careful of what kind of tricks your doing because drop-through decks by nature are weaker on the mounts than a regular top-mount deck. If you're going to be jumping and landing hard, it might not hold up, but if your just doing some fancy footwork, then it should hold up fine. Also, it depends on what the deck is made of. If it's a stiff 9-ply maple deck for example, it's more likely to break because maple is stiff but brittle. But if it's a flexible bamboo/fiberglass deck, then it should be fine. Hope that helps!

    Hi, can i use drop through as a cruiser (and a little bit carving) around the city?
    Or is it better yo get cruiser board instead?

    • @tacticsboardshop
      @tacticsboardshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely use a drop through longboard to mob around the city. It's not quite as maneuverable as a normal cruiser because it doesn't have kicktails to pivot on a dime, and if you encounter curbs then you'll have to pick up your board. So a cruiser is better for a more urban environment, but if you're cruising around on bike paths or non-crowded roads, then a drop-through longboard will be fine. 👍 - Tim

    heyy, so this is my 3rd summer longboarding, and i recently learned to slide. (my goal is to race competitively) i am ready to get upwards of 60km and start perfecting my slides, but i will need a new set up to do so.
    I was thinking of landyachtz switchblade 2015, 38 with otang cage 73mm 86a.
    i am 5'7" but ive learned to ride on a 42' drop-thru pintail and i think 36 would be too small for me.. just wondering your thoughts, or suggestions on that idea..? *****

    • @neuvation6607
      @neuvation6607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondering what trucks and safety gear you because how the fuck are u ready to ride over 60 if u are on a pintail.. anyways thats besides the point and 3yrs skating can probs explain for that...ik this is a late response but if u can ride switch confidently then I recommend getting something like the landyachtz canyon arrow or another Downhill Top Mount board DIRECTIONAL board..... NOT drop through or drop deck as u said u wanted to perfect slides and you need grip to do that.... Also look at some 78-82a wheels that are SQUARE LIPPED (if you can already do predrifts near your top speeds and want more grip).

    • @tacticsboardshop
      @tacticsboardshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll be able to slide on either board, but a drop-through might be a tiny bit easier to break traction because the standing platform is lower to the ground. The type of wheels you have will make more of a factor on your ability to slide. There are longboard wheels that are specifically formulated to slide better and wheels that have a stone ground finish will also break traction more easily. Stay safe out there! ✌

      @nobody4867 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Come on at least try and think... Why would the type of board affect your speed? Because it doesn't (in case you still have understood).
      Get a board with medium flex, not too stiff cause you want to carve but not too flexy because that gets a bit unstable.
      If you want to dance then a board slightly on the big side so like 40 inch. Drop through is more stable for beginners, and easier to slide with. But you didn't say you wanted to slide so that;'s not important for you. More experienced riders often choose top-mounts because they have more grip (you can of course still slide them but they are less likely to slide out unexpectedly) and as far as stability goes you can achieve the same stability if you have the right technique. The grip difference is a question of the angle at which force is being applied to the board when turning. The stability difference is a question of the distance from your feet to the pivot point of the trucks.
      Basically, top vs drop is your choice.
      Now for speed, wheels are what makes the difference. Bigger wheels achieve faster speeds, smaller ones accelerate quicker. Harder wheels go a bit faster, accelerate a bit more quickly , and slide more easily than soft wheels. But don't only look at wheel hardness, look at customer reviews because what they're made of makes a bigger difference than hardness.
      You probably want medium large (68mm+) and soft-ish grippy wheels.
      Get 50 degree trucks and same axle width as your board (+/- half an inch or so). Lower degree trucks are for very high speeds and they don't carve as easily. Careful though, often hangar width is confused with axle width.
      Spend like 20 or 30 bucks on bearings. Do not look at Abec ratings. Look at reviews. Bones Bearings are good.

    • @nobody4867
      @nobody4867 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And board width has nothing to do with foot size btw. It's a preference and your looking at dancing and sitting on the board so get a wide one (like 9 or 10 inches or more)

    Can i mount a normal truck on a drop through deck???

    • @tacticsboardshop
      @tacticsboardshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can! You can mount the truck the same way by taking it apart and reassembling it around the board. But regular skate trucks are a bit small for drop through long boards. You can mount them on the bottom like a regular deck, but that defeats the purpose of having a drop through.

  • @koenhaps2771
    @koenhaps2771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is drop through easier to turn if you're just riding around

    • @tacticsboardshop
      @tacticsboardshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not really going to affect the turning radius whether it's a drop through or not. It's all going to depend on the trucks, how wide the board is, and the wheelbase. If you have taller and looser trucks then obviously it will turn better, and a wider board will also be easier to turn because of the extra leverage when you lean. Also a board with a shorter wheelbase will have a slightly tighter turning radius than a longer wheelbase. Although one advantage to drop through boards is that many of them have cut-outs for the wheels, so you can lean as hard as you want and not get wheelbite. Sorry for rambling! 😅 I hope that answered your question! - Tim
