  • Nike will investigate accusations of abuse by Mary Cain while she was part of Alberto Salazar's training group. The runner says it reached the point where she started having suicidal thoughts and cutting herself.
Cain joined the disbanded Nike Oregon Project run by Salazar in 2013, soon after competing in the 1,500-meter final at track and field's world championships when she was 17.
Now 23, Cain told The New York Times in a video essay that she joined Nike because she "wanted to be the best female athlete ever."
"Instead, I was emotionally and physically abused by a system designed by Alberto and endorsed by Nike," she said.
Nike said in a statement these are "deeply troubling allegations which have not been raised by Mary or her parents before. Mary was seeking to rejoin the Oregon Project and Alberto's team as recently as April of this year and had not raised these concerns as part of that process."
The sportswear giant added it will "take the allegations extremely seriously and will launch an immediate investigation to hear from former Oregon Project athletes."

Justin Gamboa bro most people that face any type of abuse whether mental or physical almost always feel that it is their fault and not the abusers, thus why she went back to voice her concern but also trying to protect her image from being tarnished from people like you that think she is “victimizing” herself

    • @ninapust4103
      @ninapust4103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +90

@@bustin9938 that's a thing with abuse that she also said in her tweet: when someone constantly puts you down and scolds you, their approval, if given, feels so good you're willing to forget all of the bad things. That's one of the big things in emotional abuse and manipulation - you're manipulated into thinking your abuser's approval is the only thing that matters. It's not called attention seeking, it's called being a trauma victim and it can take a very long time to recover from the mindset that emotional abuse gives you
On another note, why are you so quick to disregard her? Would you have the same comment if a man came out with this story? Why is every woman who speaks openly about the abuse she's endured an "attention seeking liar"? Not only in sports but in media in general. Y'all are so quick to slap the words "attention seeking" on the article and are therefore part of the problem. Stop invalidating women. She has absolutely no reason to lie and her story is backed by medical proof. If you lose your period your bones become more brittle because of hormone imbalance and she broke 5 bones. And she's not the only one - I know a few similar stories from figure skating which is a very weight centered sport and in some training programs, your weight isn't allowed to fluctuate for more than 300g - ironically, most of the broken bones and stress fracture cases I know come from those programs.
Also I would advise you to not use "anorexic" to describe a skinny person bc anorexia comes in all shapes and sizes and a lot of people are denied the help they need because they don't look "anorexic enough" so you can imagine how harmful that can be
And she does look healthier in the earlier races, she's an athlete so yeah, she's slim, but you can very obviously notice the weight changes

She's definitely not lying. All of her teammates at this defunct program back up her claims. Cain was also medically diagnosed with RED-S, a condition triggered when athletes take in too few calories to support rigorous aerobic training. This causes young women to stop having periods, which ultimately decreases the amount of estrogen in the body and results in the loss of bone density. It's because of RED-S that she didn't have her period for THREE YEARS and broke 5 different bones. And to the idiots using the fact that she tried to rejoin the team as evidence that she made this whole thing up, just put yourself in her shoes. Her whole life she aspired to go to the Olympics to represent the U.S. in track and field. She was widely believed to be a shoe-in to make the squad. Would you so easily give up on your lifelong dream of becoming an Olympian? Not only was this her lifelong goal, everyone expected/assumed she would make the Olympic team because of her raw talent.

We knew something was wrong when she left abruptly from OP a couple of years ago. There was speculation that the abrupt departure and immediate radio silence that came from her camp probably had a lot to do with Salazar and the OP, along with the amount of injuries she endured which lead to her poor performances. She was a great athlete that was very talented at a young age, but too young at the time to go through much of that vigorous training volume and weight loss regimen Salazar implemented for her. Telling her she needed to be skinny was so demeaning, discouraging and downright disrespectful to Mary Cain and certainly wasn’t considered as best practices to suit Cain’s overall future performances.
She lost too much weight, her menstrual cycle was out of whack. And broke 5 bones including having stress fractures in her feet. She went from potential legend to immediate track town drop out under Salazar’s coaching.
I wonder how this system can be fixed, how young female athletes can be treated appropriately to help achieve their potential without the dangers they’re exposed to under sports specific vigorous training systems. Nike needs to be held extremely accountable for allowing this and supporting this type of behavior from such a sociopath in Salazar for years.

Having grown up in Oregon and I know (a couple of good) people who have worked at Nike for years, I believe every word of the athletes. The culture of the Portland Metropolitan and suburban areas, including Nike HQ, is extremely toxic. And in Oregon it is legal through all nine months of pregnancy to get an abortion. A woman could even be in labor, 41 weeks pregnant, totally healthy for both mother and baby, and she could still decide while in labor to abort her baby and it's legal.
Cultures like that, where people don't bat an eye to abort a baby at any time, tend to think of people--especially children, as disposable. Because people are disposable to the company, they treat their athletes and other "employees" however they want to and feel no remorse.

This is for Men and Women!
    Weight affects endurance athletes.
Men also suffer from low test from endurance sports.
Even outside of endurance sports Male athletes are pressured about weight. It’s even in some contracts in the NFL.
If she didn’t want to worry about weight, go throw the shot put. It’s foolish and naive to think that in her discipline weight is not a huge factor.
If you want to be best in the world you have to make sacrifices. You have to put your body through hell. Ask any champion! It isn’t given, it earned by doing what others see as impossible day after day.
If you can’t and won’t make these sacrifices, then quit! Walk away! Go do something that is easy!
No one forced this girl to cut herself, she did that! She could have left, but she wanted to be the best, just didn’t have what it takes. Now it’s someone’s else fault?
Guaranteed if she did have success and still have these issues we won’t hear her complaining. The issues would be referred to as sacrifices. But because she failed, sacrifices now becomes issues.

Nike has work to do in the way they treat their star athletes. That said, I wonder how many of the athletes in the program were truly unhappy. The question should be, what is the responsibility of sponsors and organizations to ensure the mental health of their athletes? These programs are designed to weed out the weakest link. We're talking about training to be the best of the best.
Training to be the best in the world is not fair, kind, or comforting. "The best girl runner in America" means nothing past age 16 or 17 because of physiological changes.
Salazar was working on the edge of human limits. Not defending him, but best the No. 1 human in your discipline requires sacrifice and otherwise talented/gifted people will fail.
It sounds like Nike and its athletic programs need to enhance their information sharing, athlete accountability, and support programs. But fundamentally, they don't seem to have done anything wrong. It's just that they can do more.
