I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike | NYT Opinion

  • Mary Cain’s male coaches were convinced she had to get “thinner, and thinner, and thinner.” Then her body started breaking down.
At 17, Mary Cain was already a record-breaking phenom: the fastest girl in a generation, and the youngest American runner to turn professional. In 2013, she was signed by the best track team in the world, Nike’s Oregon Project, run by its star coach Alberto Salazar.
Then everything collapsed. Her fall was just as spectacular as her rise, and she shares that story for the first time in the Video Op-Ed above.
Instead of becoming a symbol of girls’ unlimited potential in sports, Cain became yet another standout young athlete who got beaten down by a win-at-all-costs culture. Girls like Cain become damaged goods and fade away. We rarely hear what happened to them. We move on.
The problem is so widespread it affected the only other female athlete featured in the last Nike video ad Cain appeared in, the figure skater Gracie Gold. When the ad came out in 2014, like Cain, Gold was a prodigy considered talented enough to win a gold medal at the next Olympics. And, like Cain, Gold got caught in a system where she was compelled to become thinner and thinner. She developed disordered eating to the point of imagining her own death.
“America loves a good child prodigy story, and business is ready and waiting to exploit that story, especially when it comes to girls,” said Lauren Fleshman, who ran for Nike until 2012. “When you have these kinds of good girls, girls who are good at following directions to the point of excelling, you’ll find a system that’s happy to take them. And it’s rife with abuse.”
We don’t typically hear from the casualties of these systems - the girls who tried to make their way in this system until their bodies broke down and they left the sport. It’s easy to focus on bright new stars, while forgetting about those who disappeared. We fetishize these athletes, but we don’t protect them. If they fail to pull off what we expect them to, we abandon them.
But Mary Cain’s story isn’t over. By speaking out, she’s making sure of that.

You don't need to be a nutritionist or a rocket scientist to know at 114lb she ain't losing 50lb. Look she just made a stupid mistake which cost her thousands and thousands of dollars and most importantly her health. Everything she did, she did to herself. Plus, there is no guarantee that she would have been any better than she was in high school. Her body peaked in high school and she had mistakenly thought she would continue to get faster year after year. Everyone has a year they peak and she peaked in high school. Her health problems were a direct result of her trying to maintain the crazy ideals she had set up for herself.

@@haroldsmith7044 I don't think you know the full history of Alberto and his athletes. Mary was successful with her smear campaign against Alberto AFTER he ended up being banned for PEDs. Her MeToo was her way to disassociate and free herself from Alberto. And she admits that she spoke with Kara Goucher before coming forward. Jordan Hasay, Siffan Hassan, Shannon Rowbury, Mary Slaney who ran under Alberto didn't collaborate her story or come to her defense. Why is that?

She should have done her research and known the information they were giving her was the wrong information.

Quite clearly the system implemented by Nike harmed this girl greatly, whatever the benefits of the system may otherwise be.

She has a point. A system designed by men for men, isn't going to cut it for women, for the very reasons she outlined. It's biology, one system doesn't fit all.

Ya, they make clothes or shoes that athletes wear, but the bottom line comes down to the dollar and advertising their own brand. Nike has a lot of other unethical practices.

    • @kato093
      @kato093 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

To me this sounds more like a cautionary tale about women in sports and how women arent biologically designed to push themselves so hard without immediate repercussions.
This is also why people dont care about female sports: when we watch athletes we watch superhumans, peak physical condition that only the 0.001% and lower can achieve, be it because of physical or mental restrictions.
Watching the female marathon with times below average of the average man....well thats not superhuman or remarkable. Its mondane and boring.
In my eyes she just broke down. She couldnt do what was being asked of her. But i dont blame her. Its ok. She wasnt strong enough, not because of her body but because of her mind. What she calls "abuse" is training for any other athlete.
People push you to your limits so you can destroy those limits and be faster, stronger.
Its like in the military: there they actually abuse men physically and especially mentally, to break down your barriers and rebuild you once you are broken, with discipline and training.

Wtf do you think they do when they weight athletes like for boxe matches? They are fat shaming? Lmao.
Its always someone else's fault when women fail. If its a man, EVEN BETTER. If its a system of men, thats the ULTIMATE VICTIM CARD!
