    I heard that Sonic Team of Japan is relocating to the US and are going to be developing Sonic games here. It's all part of 'SEGA: Road to 2020!'. Look it up on TSSZ! Maybe they'll take our feedback and build a game based on our expectations!

      +Trokon Hufnagel That's interesting. So how much will doing this impact the Sonic franchise exactly?

    • @anarchimation1448

      since Sonic Team is now relocating to the US SEGA branch, supposedly making Sonic games here, they'll be in an area where Sonic popularity is the strongest. They'll be in an area where they can listen to feedback/criticism on the games, and be able to improve the quality on the modern games, maybe even an Adventure title if we're lucky...
      But I digress...I read on Reddit that SEGA of Japan is this cynical, close-minded, egotist shell of a company with no idea what they are doing. Takashi Iizuka? He means well for the series, much more than we know, but he's pushed around by a company whose only focus is pushing the Sonic brand into an area where he is the least popular: Japan.
      Here, read for yourself, but take it with a grain of salt...
      www.reddit.com/r/SonicTheHedgehog/comments/7v2rl6/desperate_state_of_sega_japan_and_sonic_team/
      After reading this, I'll bet all of you will be just as dissapointed and depressed as I am, if this were the case, which is still iffy, but is still backed up by this claim: www.tssznews.com/2009/01/05/the-blog-sega-doesnt-want-you-to-read/
      “There’s no doubt that Sonic Team have lost their quality touch. They are worse than talentless: they are without passion. Bored, weary, closed-minded and out of touch with any sense of what makes games good anymore."-Ben Andac, 2006
      For those of you who are still on Sonic Team Japan's side, remember this: Shun Nakamura would rather make Samba De Amigo for Nintendo Switch than direct a Sonic game. Good day.

    Sonic Team should start hiring people who know how to do Sonic game. Hire people who care about the Sonic franchise!!!
    I have loved Sonic since I was 10 and heard that the Sonic Team made good games in the past. Now is the time for them to create something new and original. No nostalgia!!! Now, games have started to come realistic and more story driven. I would like a Sonic to have a more serious and big open worlds. It would be so awesome and it was just give me so much happiness. I don't care if takes five years, do it!!!!

      Lost World, besides the nostagia, was a really original Sonic game. And everyone hated it. I don't think one lukewarm Boost game is a reason to scrap it entirely for something worse.

    • @lisa17001
      @lisa17001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't wan blame Sonic fans for like anything but I feel we are divided. With classic sonic games and modern sonic games, classic sonic games should be left with Christian Whitehead and Tee Lopes because that game was so good. As for Modern Sonic games, they are going to have something to balance the boost and platforming. Most Sonic fans want the adventure style game play and some want the boost formula. It's really divided. They should try to find a balance with adventure style and boost formula but people won't be satisfied. I believe that it's time for a open world Sonic game!!!

    • @TripleJump
      @TripleJump 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      lisa17001
      No! I think a balance between Boost and Adventure sounds much more appealing. There will never be a scenario where everyone is 100% satisfied, but that could be a decent compromise for most. And don't say it can't be done, since I've seen other game companies do more.

    • @lisa17001

    Here's what I think would make a good Modern Sonic game
    *Good story
    *Good graphics (not a problem)
    *Good physics (Generations)
    *Great soundtrack (Tee Lopes or Jun Senoue)
    *Great Level Design (Unleashed & Generations styled)
    *Multiple pathways
    *NO 2D SECTIONS!
    *No Classic Sonic
    *Boost or Adventure gameplay (I love Boost more)
    *Multiple playable characters
    *Good unlockables (hub worlds, extra stages, special videos, etc)
    *CGI cutscenes
    *Original Stages or Stages that never been re-imagined
    *Emblems, Silver Moon Medals, or Red Star Rings
    *Chao Garden (optional)
    *Original bosses
    *Old characters returns (Mighty, Ray, Fang, etc)
    *Great final boss
    *Chaos Emeralds (plot device or unlockable)
    *New villain (Terios the Prototype)
    BAM! BEST MODERN SONIC GAME EVER!

I've always loved the Sonic series for better or worse and Mania was a huge step in the right direction. If Sonic team are going to make another adventure game, they need to hire members from the Utopia for gameplay and level design, and Sonic World for multiple playable characters.
    If they're making another boost game it has to be as creative and original as Colors, have Generations level design, the challenge and a story as good as Unleashed, and have the presentation of Forces.
    I don't care which one they choose as long as it's good, polished and has love put into it

    They should hire Ian Flynn to write the stories. He understands the series and characters incredibly well and knows how to handle them in darker toned stories. The adventure era (SA1-06) games didn't do too bad I don't think. I think the Sonic game that had the best tone was 06. Now hear me out with this. I know people rip on 06 a lot, but it had a lot of good qualities that people blindly overlook. One if those qualities was the general tone of the game. It was a serious game with a lot if darker elements, yet it had enough light hearted moments to balance it out. Light hearted moments that aren't filled with horrible cheesy dialogue and horribly written characters. That's how a Sonic games story should be like, in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with having darker or lighter stories. It's just how you execute it.

    Some of these I can agree with, but others I cannot. Mainly the gameplay and its engine. Yes, I can agree people would prefer a game like Sonic Utopia with momentum physics and whatnot, but there is still way more potential for growth with the Boost formula, now more than ever in all honesty. I think the best example we have is the Tag Team stages in Forces since there was a smoother usage of the boost in those stages, which was the closest we’ve gotten to a 3D experience with the Boost outside of Unleashed and ‘06. ....WELL, outside of the Double Boost playing the game itself.
    And yes, I can also agree on the management part. Nakamura-san definitely showed us there is a problem there. What I cannot agree with, however, is with the story. I’m sorry, and this is totally my opinion, but in this game: the English dialogue was way better than the Japanese dialogue. I have seen clips of some of the dialogue for Japan and....I wasn’t pleased as well as I was with the English one. For once, I didn’t have to deal with so many cringe-inducing lines in a Sonic game when it came to Forces. Also, it may be hearing things wrong, but I have heard it was Japan who got their script translated wrong compared to us and ours was voiced first.
    In any case, if you believe this will help out, I’ll support it. But there are some things in your video that is going to be hit or miss with a lot of people, myself included.

    • @TripleJump
      @TripleJump 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yami Nomura
      I agree with what you're saying about the story. I remember hearing that Knuckles says something like "Good luck, Rookie" before Arsenal Pyramid. It just isn't as funny as "Rookie... make sure you take good notes." 😂 But I think story in Sonic should be more simplistic and brief (like how Unleashed and Kirby games have a cinematic start and a climactic ending), with more optional lore and backstory for fans if they seek it (like Rosalina's story in Mario Galaxy or the pause screen descriptions for bosses in Kirby.) Maybe they can be collectables?

    • @nasirbarbee5940

      Yami Nomura id make the argument that sonic utopia/adventure have way more potential than boost.
      This opens the door for creative levels and collecting special items. Etc. Something that. Boost cant do that well (aka moon sun medals) another problem with the boost is that you have to put alot of time into making one sonic level since sonic runs extremely fast. Why do that when you can make a creative non linear world for sonic to explore?
      This actually opens up alot of possibilities for sonic since he can actually interact with things in his environment rather than boost right through it.
      Atleast make the boost do something like help sonic break through walls when you gain enough speed. Or sonic can use the boost to activate a switch. Or give him elemental variations of the boost. Fire boost lets him tburn his environment to reveal a power ring Shock boost can be used in short burst and. Attracts items rings badniks bubble boost can help sonic dash through water like he is swimming etc so many things. You can do

    • @andyw386
      @andyw386 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the biggest problem with the boost formula is that it hasn't had its own game properly dedicated to it in order to get it right. Think about it: Unleashed had the Werehog (which I enjoyed imo, but that meant less time spent on the boost stages) Colours/Colors had the wisps, Generations had Classic Sonic, and Forces has Classic + Custom. What SEGA need to do is make a boost game, but focus ONLY on the boost formula, no gimmicks. There is no point in adding gimmicks like wisps when the core gameplay still requires lots of work to perfect it. (And absolutely no more Classic Sonic in Modern games, as it has been proven to just not work.)

    Also, I believe that boost style gameplay is good but it needs to be used in a more open world type gameplay or at least a multiple path way type gameplay like sonic generations and colors. The adventure gameplay style is also good along with the classic style, but you have to stop using classic sonic in the modern sonic games. You guys should make modern sonic have 2d and 3d stages or full on 3d stages and have like a sonic mania 2 for the people who like 2d or both. (I love every style of sonic gameplay btw)

      I think that by having the Spin Dash as the tool, and the Boost as a power-up that is heavily rationed out, Sonic Team can design levels that feel more open like Adventure 1 and Heroes, that utilize the Spin Dash as a part of using Speed as a reward, the essence of earlier Sonic titles

I also keep saying that maybe Mania was a test from SEGA to see what a fan can do with an official game. It really shows that fans can do really good thing for a franchise.

    A video from a Sonic fan that is insightful and offers constructive criticism? Blasphemy!!!
    Seriously, this is a good video, you just earned a subscriber. Also, have you heard of a game called "Defunct"... I made a rather viral video called "Sonic Team, take notes". I don't want to shill for myself... but please check it out. :)
    Also, there is a 3D momentum based platformer called "Fark The Electric Jester". It's still in development and a bit jank in a few areas, but my God is it so satisfying to play. It's made by LakeFeperd, the same person who made the Sonic fangames Sonic Before and After the Sequel and his own original 2D momentum based platformer, Spark The Electric Jester.
    There are many examples of how much potential a proper 3D Sonic game has. You just need to know where to look. ;)

      Zexal Thanks :). But I honestly hate what my channel has become. I covered some Sonic fangames that nobody has ever heard that I considered to be really good. So imagine my surprise when those video blow up. Granted, I try to play in the most fun, stylish way possible... but still.
      I don't want my channel to be just about that and I'll remind my viewers and especially subscribers that. I'll even take pot shots at them and make silly jokes out of this situation, because I'm mad like that :)).
      What makes me sad is that nobody will look up my other videos, especially the ones for Transformers Devastation, I'm really proud of those videos and I love that game. I started my channel featuring Devil May Cry 4, then branching a bit to other action games, featured an FPS game called Serious Sam, featured the Darksiders games, a bit of Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising and I still want to feature many more games, but I can't now because people want Sanic...

      Marius Urucu That’s sad to hear. I’ve seen you videos on different games from Platinum Games. You really know what you’re doing when you play anything. I feel like there aren’t enough gaming channels with people who actually take time to understand the intricacies of the mechanics in the games they play.
      Even with Fark the Electric Jester, I thought you were the developer speed running that stage you’re so good.
      I hope your channel grow with the content you love to make.

      @MariusUrucu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zexal I'm not too angry about it. That's just how it is with TH-cam and most channels, since people subscribe for a particular kind of content. Hence, why a lot gaming channels are only focused on one thing and one thing only, otherwise you end up alienating your viewers and becoming obscure. Sad, but it is what it is.
      Well, I like to challenge that status quo :)). And given the situation, I made some videos Sonic videos that sync up with music I took from Redout, a futuristic racing game that I love and highly recommend (featured 2 video on my channel with the title GOTTA GO FAST: The Racing game and GOTTA GO FASTER: The Fastening).
      I'm really proud of those videos, if only for the uncanny valley effect since the songs both fit the stages in name and thematically too. :))

    A well done video.
    I may have forgotten but are you aware of the Sonic Forces survey? I recommend attaching the video it to the survey. That what I'm doing except I'll be typing a in-depth Sonic Forces review and attaching it to the survay very soon.
    Anyway---YES! You are right on the money! They should something like Sonic Utopia and inject fresh new blood that are fans & professionals in the industry into the already existing staff of Sonic Team. They should go to a not-completly-but-very-close direction of TH-camr ShayMay's vision of a 3D Sonic game (Sonic Utopia and Green Hill Paradice Act 2 being the closest to his vision. The Sonic Adventue games being the closest offically).
    Though I wouldn't mind Sonic Team continue to refine and perfect the Boost/Rush formula. I would argue that they never perfectly replicated the formula from the Sonic Rush quadrilogy into 3D; similar to that they never perfectly replicated the original Genesis games into 3D with the Adventure games. That air boost in Forces this actually nothing new, we had that in the handheld Boost games (the Sonic Rush quadrilogy) and Unleashed (PS2/Wii). So for the console Boost games, if they can turn the slide move into a roll move, bring back the momentum based homing attack (that were in the first to Rush games), bring back the spin dash, bring back the trick system (was in the Rush games and it was perfectly replicated in Generations), bring back the drift and overall good controls & Generations level design but better, then they're golden.
    So honestly---I can go either way; a very close direction of ShayMay's idea, or continue to perfect the Boost.
    As much as I like Sonic Forces, Sonic Team does need a bit of a resurgence and they need it very soon. And hey, since Sonic Team has now fully moved to SEGA of America (according to Aaron Webber in a past live stream not too long ago), this could be a good sign that all of this will come to fruition very soon.

      The weird thing about me as a Sonic fan is the fact that I've always liked the reflex focused approach of the boost games (however that does not include memorizing frame perfect inputs in Unleashed just to get a rank better than a C) more than the technical classic formula. Heck, I even like the more casual direction they seem to be taking the series in.
      I hope nobody stops taking me seriously after this statement.

    5:46 Okay here is something we need to address. Why SHOULDN'T the answer be to make another Adventure game?! Not that it should be called Adventure, it doesn't HAVE to be called that, but why has the Sonic community grown SUCH an inexplicable and irrational distance to the Adventure games? Or anything regarding towards it for that matter?! The Adventure games were good. They weren't classic Sonic games exactly but they were quality games. Imperfect for sure, but the template those games set for future installments truly cemented the extent to which 3D Sonic can move beyond towards.
    And I'm glad you bring this up as note in the video. Very much. My problem is the distancing. People in the community have seen it as some sort of crime to desire an Adventure styled game. And that it is, for some reason, required for themselves to distance from any and all possible hints of wanting another Adventure game. I don't know why ProJared and the like suddenly became the end all be all say on whether the Adventure games were trash or not, but I'm kind of sick of the people feeling pressured within their own community to have the same opinion as everyone else when it comes to these two VERY specific games.
    That's my little nitpick but this is an amazing video that REALLY does an amazing job selling the message to SEGA. Way to go Sam. You've spoken for probably the majority of the entire fanbase. More than you think. Thank you

    Okay, so my honest thoughts:
    - As someone who has done Game Development as a hobby for quite while now--and plans to pursue this as a career--the engine really isn't at fault. There may be some tech limitations here and there, but that can be tweaked. The issue is gameplay design.
    - You mentioned the Hedgehog Engine only being good for speedrunning and then go on to talk about Adventure era sonic. Personally, I haven't played Adventure or it's sequel for more than a few minutes. That said, my favorite part of the best 3D Sonic games, Genesis classics, and Mania is that it can give everyone a TASTE of being a speedrunner. The feeling of nailing those jumps to complete the level a few seconds faster than last time. That's incredible! I did Green Hill Time Trial in Mania a ton because of this. (With no prior experience/hobby of speedrunning by the way!)
    - In my opinion Sonic has focused for far too long on one gameplay keyword--and you can probably guess it--SPEED. Sonic's gotta go FAST! But here's the thing. I don't think the best Sonic games were ever really about that. They were about another word. FLOW. And once you learn how to precisely link together your movements, you are rewarded with SPEED. Unfortunately, the quote you played really shows that this isn't the way Sonic Team is thinking. Speed *isn't* a goal, it's a reward. *SPEED* through *MASTERY* of *FLOW.*
    - Now, with me talking about earning speed and such, you might think I believe that Sonic is about level memorization. I don't. It has it's place, but something I think Generations and Colors do really well is teaching you enough that you can at least get through a new obstacle when you see it, then you can master it on repeat plays. I think the game should teach you the mechanics well enough that you can see a new obstacle, see how it works, and react with a reasonable chance of understanding how to get past it first time.
    - Ans since we're talkign about level-design I should say, I REALLY don't think that Sonic needs to be open-world. Yes, we've seen franchises benefit from it; we've also seen it hamper franchises. If Sonic is about mastery and speedrunning then an open-world is only going to get in the way. I realize this might be because we want different things from the franchise, but considering how Mania did, I'd say trying to get to the *heart* of the classics and refining that is key.
    - Now, I think the exploration aspect can still be there! Whether it's a hub world, or Sonic 3 style massive explorable levels, that need can still be filled.
    - There's a great video by BlazetheHedgehog--I think that's his name--that explains his thoughts on what Sonic needs to be. I agree with him that scripting needs to be minimized. As I said, the thrill of speed should come through mastery of flow. He also mentions driving style controls. When you boost in current games, Sonic actually controls more like a car than a platformer hero. This is great, but I think boost is overused at the moment so I'm not sure exactly how this could be implemented.
    I have *SO MANY* ideas. I may make my own video some day, or maybe even a little non-fangame prototype to demonstrate my ideas in action. But if you take away one thing, remember this. If you want to feel like Sonic, you need to earn your speed through mastery of flow.

      Tbh, I'm kind against whole car thing, I don't know if it's just me, but I don't think giving sonic a gas pedal, or car aspects work for me, I wanna keep the speed I earned with the thumbstick ONLY, not with another button as well. I would probably be inservice of 2d sonic to do that......in the main series at least. if it were for another character, and not sonic and his friends, or used for a different formula that wouldnt take away everything else that sonic was meant for, then I'd be fine with it. I'm also a little pissed with giving sonic a speed cap. Probably more of a nitpick than anything else, though.

    It's late but I'd like to share some ideas I had for bringing back playable characters, and how to handle Classic Sonic from now on. For the future, unless you make a COMPLETELY REMIXED GENERATIONS 2 (meaning NO GREEN HILL ZONE), replace Classic Sonic with someone that actually makes sense like idk Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, hell I'd even play as Amy. Keep Classic Sonic in pixels now. Generations was good enough, and Forces just ruined him as he was pointless. A game I'd like to see is a boost game BUT with a bunch of different playable characters, each with their own quirks. Sonic is the fastest (of course), Tails can fly for easy platforming, Knuckles can glide and climb walls, maybe even burrow into special dirt pathways for shortcuts, Shadow... I guess could use guns again? And instead of Shadow boosting he plays like the Adventure titles, with the spindash and all. Silver plays basically how he did in 06, but with faster execution (meaning there should only be little puzzles in his stages) and faster running speed. Maybe Amy could play like she does in Heroes, or a blend of Heroes and Adventure? Idk, but I just wish something like this could happen. But anyway, that's my idea for the future of Sonic games

      I totes agree with this, I made a comment just a while ago about how a Sonic 3D game should have playable characters other than Sonic. These characters could access the stages in different ways, and even reach places that Sonic can't reach. (I also agree with leaving Classic Sonic just for 2D games)

  • @kickit938
    @kickit938 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sam, I love the breakdown of the three overarching issues with Sonic Team. I mostly agree with your ideas for the series. Here are two additional statements that I'd like to add to your video-letter:
    - Sonic Team and all players of Sonic games need to metaphorically break down the walls of the "Classic and Modern formulas". The Boost action can be used in one game. The Spin Dash can be used in another game. Or they may be used at the same time. However, everyone must quit categorizing each game into "eras". The online wars between the "Modern, Boost, and Classic eras" are fracturing the playerbase. Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces integrated these "eras" into the story and gameplay. In Sonic Generations, the hub world is divided into those three segments, some of the characters referenced each "era" accordingly, and Sonic divided into two separate entities: Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic. In Sonic Forces, the Classic-Modern division returned, which further segregates Sonic players. Basically, Sonic Team is pandering to each segment of the community in hopes of uniting the whole community. Instead, Sonic Team must solidify the identity of Sonic as a role model and as a video game character. A Hat in Time, the Kingdom Hearts series, and the Elder Scrolls series are notable examples of established lore, references to previous games of the same franchise and other franchises of the same genre, consistent gameplay, and consistent story tones. And in return, the developers exceeded their profit margin and increased their player base.
    - Last year, Gamasutra reported on a Rolling Stone interview with Sonic Mania-developer Christian Whitehead. In the interview, he explained the essential level design of a Sonic game. I advise everyone to read the article here: www.gamasutra.com/view/news/305337/Sonic_Mania_dev_says_good_Sonic_level_design_is_all_about_slopes.php. His observations apply to any main series Sonic game and definitely need recognition by Sonic Team. In essence, platforming, exploration, and speed segments come in waves, like music. Slopes grant the player access to these different waves because of Sonic's momentum and jump arc.

  • @loganharrison1079
    @loganharrison1079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've always been more interested in the story rather than gameplay. I fell in love with the character, not whether or not you spin dash or boost. (I sound dumb but let me explain)
    Why do people excuse lack luster story telling for mediocre-decent gameplay? Think of a Sonic game like a cupcake. Is the cupcake a good cupcake if the muffin part is okay, but the icing tastes like garbage? Nah fam, don't think too hard. It's the same with Sonic.
    Don't get me wrong, gameplay is supremely important but it's not what got me hooked on the franchise. Being a kid I was always inspired for Sonic's genuine nature, and flashy, but not over the top persona. Sonic was at his best when he was an epic hero, and I feel like this version of the character was best captured by Jason Griffith (so.. he's my favorite voice actor). I don't know about y'all but the opening cutscene for Sonic unleashed sent shivers down my spine. How about the scene in Black Knight where blue dude is dicing huge blocks of rubble? As I see it, the "True Sonic" has been gone for too long, even Crush 40 left when Griffith did :(. I don't think Roger is bad, in fact he has more voicing talent than Griffith, but he doesn't fit the character nearly as well as other voice actors (although seeing how he established Boom Sonic, he's perfect for that specific role). As far as story goes, we don't need cheesy or dark (some elements are fine), we need epic.
    Sonic needs a reboot of sorts. Perhaps hire a new English voice actor (it seems unfair how the Japanese one has stayed the same since SA1) or rehire Griffith (IMO). Also a mesh between boost and Adventure gameplay should probably happen, I think I have some good ideas on that.
    Sonic needs a new direction.

    @NerdyGamerReacts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sam, I agree with everything u said. I also have some ideas for the future of Sonic as well:
    1st. Managment:
    They shud definitely give new developers a chance to create something truly great, like the Sonic Mania Team, they created one of the most memorable and fun experiences I've ever had with a sonic game, and it was because it was made by fans who love, and really got what we wanted to see, in a way, a tribute to Sonic, bringing back original levels, while also creating new ones, and mixing them all up just enough to make each playthrough unique, different and fun.
    2nd. Story:
    I think that a Sonic game would really benefit from a story line with a combination of elements of the dark tone of forces, (Sonic being kidnapped, tortured, yet, he didn't act like it, didn't mention it, maybe he could've acknowledged what had happened),and Unleased as well, (with Sonic being beat down by Robotnic, turning him into a were-hog, and the repercussions of everything he did, it was one of the best stories I've seen in a sonic game), the series would really benefit from a more mature tone, I honestly can say I enjoyed the storyline of both games a lot, forces was really entertaining, but it definitely could've been better, unleashed by far, in my opinion, is a better story than forces, maybe make the story dark, mature, but fun and a little light hearted too, Sonic is definitely making moves back towards the smart mouthed hedgehog we knew from previous games, his attitude and personality can really shine if Sonic Team can just let his voice actor Roger have fun with the role, writing wise, maybe collaborate with each other, get American writers to write the game, instead of just over in Japan, which leads me to my next point.
    3rd. Gameplay:
    One of the most important aspects of any 3D Sonic game, (next to the story of course). The drift is one of the biggest things I missed in forces. It's fun to go extremely fast, and grind around corners while not losing any speed is rewarding and exhilarating, yet it was removed, why...?
    Next up is Sonic's movement. He was way to stiff, his jump didn't feel right, his sense of speed seemed off, and classic sonic...I'm not even gonna touch on that because, just, why was he in this game, can we please have a great 3D Sonic game without classic Sonic, let's focus on Modern and fixing my next point
    The world of Sonic. I like Sonic Utopia, and the scope of the levels, (it was fan made, yet it showed what a potential 3D Sonic game could be like in such a vast and open world). Now I would like to see that sometime in the future, but not yet, right now they should focus on maybe making the next 3D Sonic game like the adventure games a little more, more mission to do outside of the story, sise mission, collectibles, (like in Generations, we had to earn Super Sonic, and the collectibles were so fun to collect because they had a great reason, and purpose, the unlockables were fun, music, and levels from unleashed, all the extra content really added to the replayability, so, in the next game, add more things to do, maybe even add a multiplayer feature, (kinda like the Sonic Forces Runner app, where we can go live online with other people, and race against them, except in a full 3D experience, (like playing a level of the game, as we progress through the game, collect more collectibles, and complete achievements, we earn new characters to run with, and abilities to use), and I think the boost formula should be added, just for fun, every character shud be able to do it, (of course Sonic is still the fastest character, but, it doesn't mean he'll always win, just like in the app, the abilities combined with skill, and use of boost, can easily change the game from a win to a loss in a split second), and of course, we can take alternate routes, paths, cannons, etc, it'll be 4 people, and tons of fun, plus, we can earn achievements and unlock more stuff by winning. And last thing on this point, the level design should only be done by people who understand the world of Sonic, by more than 3 people, like Sonic Forces was done, (but 2 of them had only done one Sonic game b4 Forces), and by true fans who understand the world, and can make the levels big and fun, (like in unleashed), which leads me to my final point, and the most important.
    The Boost formula. Simply put, it need to go back to the speed of Unleashed, add drifting and more control, while boosting, faster than before, yet we can see everything we need to.
    And a small note bout the level design, instead of dying by flying into literal drops that make no sense, we can't do that anymore, we have to be able to die by traps, not gaps in the earth, it's not realistic.
    We love Sonic The Hedgehog, and I hope that you, the Sonic creators with Sonic team will see this video, read our comments, and really take them to heart because we love this blue hedgehog, his personality, his attitude, his speed and we care the stories that are told, thanks for viewing this post, and I'm looking forward to the future of the franchise, go Sonic! 😀🙌😎

    Here's a checklist for an amazing Sonic game! (I have no life)
    1: Hire some people who actually know how to make a Sonic game.
    2: Write a good, dark story similar to SA2.
    3: Make a game with Adventure - style gameplay.
    4: DON'T put so many pointless collectibles in the stages. Red star rings are enough.
    5: Make collecting all the red star rings worth it.
    6: Add extra objectives to the stages and bring back emblems.
    7: Make collecting the emblems worth it.
    8: At least consider adding a chao garden. DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY CAN YOU GET FROM THE SALES IF YOU DO THAT?
    9: Take your time. Let the Sonic Mania team make some games while you secretly make the big one. Don't rush it.
    10: If you have to force in Classic Sonic and old levels at least give Classic a voice and do something creative with the levels. Something like Spaceport would be cool.
    11: Add something epic. It could be anything. Even if it was just a Super Sonic boss at the end it would still be awsome.
    12: Make Tails less of a coward. He defeated Eggman many times and even took down Chaos 4, remember?
    13: Make the chaos emeralds and the master emerald (& Knuckles) importatnt to the story.
    14: Make Eggman an actual evil scientist. Forces got it pretty good but he wasn't that great.
    15: Shadow. Just Shadow. Make him one of the main characters or at least make him important to the story.
    16: DON'T IMPLEMENT ANY DRM, ESPECIALLY DENUVO. It makes people avoid the game and it harms everybody... except for pirates and crackers. They almost always find a way around it. DRM = less sales.
    17: You can make the trailer a bit cinematic but also throw in some gameplay and a bit of story. If you want to get people hyped this is the best way to do it.
    18: If you want to add multiple playable characters give the unique abbilities.
    19: If you don't feel like the game is finished or something feels off and it need a bit more polish but you already annouced the game just delay it. Nobody will be mad. In fact, we'll be happy about that. Caring about quality isn't a bad thing.
    20: Just listen. Have someone who will watch videos like this one and look for feedback on social media. It may be a bit time consuming but it's worth it.
    21: Release SA3 only after you make a good Adventure - style game and add onto it. If you don't it will end up like Sonic 4.
    If I forgot about something just reply and I'll add that in. If you feel like all this typing was worth the effort you can give this comment a like (it wasn't)

    Something I thought I'd mention since you touched up on the unnecessary darker tone in some aspects of Sonic Forces; the localization team completely made up nonsense like the torturing thing, which is why it's so glaring that you soon see Sonic perfectly fine and joking around in the scene after. Inconsistencies like that just annoy the mess out of me, ugh.
    Gameplay wise which obviously the Sonic series needs a major cleanup on, I think above all they need to stick to primarily one gameplay style. I know the series is notorious for incorporating so many different gameplay like treasure hunting and shooting and such, but it's clear the fans largely prefer the action speed oriented ones most. If they just stuck to that one style similar to the classic games, but with very subtle differences between characters in largely the same levels, I think we'd be in for one hell of a treat.

    • @mikeanthony3300
      @mikeanthony3300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still cant believe they carelessly toss the whole "Sonic getting tortured" thing without at all thinking that maybe us American or European players would be a little bit confused. It hurts even more that the very next scene literally drops the whole subject like it never happened just to synch with the Japanese lines.

      Mohammad Sesay Yet you never heard him voice Batman or any other character outside Sonic. Doesn't matter what your used to hearing Roger say, fact is (like any voice actor) he is more than capable of actually showing more emotion outside of being cocky and wise cracking.

      Mohammad Sesay Calm down. I wasn't trying to be offensive or judge how you live your life. I'm just saying you shouldn't down play Roger because he's known for giving Sonic cheesy quotes. He's more than capable of giving Sonic a serious tone. It all depends on who is writing the script. Blame the script writer not the actor in question.

    I agree with a lot of what you said, excellent video!
    Sonic Team, there was a certain charm of the small Classic nuances in the first Adventure game, and the controls, once mastered, were speedy but manageable. The Boost formula has always seemed like a way to distract the player from the limited map and basically just get from Point A to Point B. The next Sonic game could greatly benefit from bringing back an open world with toned down controls, to encourage the exploration opportunities that were a staple of previous games. Please consider this video as you move forward and continue to shape Sonic as a character and as a franchise. Thank you

  • @NIMPAK1
    @NIMPAK1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No offence, but even if Sonic Team somehow saw this video, do you really think they're gonna listen. Managing a video game is a lot more complicated than "just get more than three level designers" or "just hire these indie guys". Sometimes things don't all go according to plan, sometimes you have to make tough decisions. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't excuse Sonic Forces from being a subpar game but I think the reasons are far more complicated than just simple incompetence. I mean I would love for Sonic Team to do a Sonic Utopia style game, I just wouldn't expect any time soon even Sonic Team did listen. I also don't think that taking shots at their staff is a good/professional way to get the point across.

    They should think about making games fully 3D again... Sonic 06 was the last game that was fully 3D and Adventure-like but it promised too much and delivered too little that's why it was a BIG disappointment (Big the Cat pun entirely intended here) but in all seriousness whether or not the next game is or possibly could be Adventure like I don't think it's a must I do however think that for now the next main game to focus on should be the 30th anniversary since it's 2 years away and most Sonic games take about a 2 year development cycle. Mainly focus on 30 anniversary and doing their best to make it huge special and truly amazing is what I think SEGA and Sonic Team should focus on. The 30th anniversary game:)

    here are my ideas for the next 3D modern sonic, though it needs a 3 yr break in my opinion:
    - hire the people who did sonic utopia and green hill paradise act 2 to work on the game
    - no 2D or boost
    - have multiple characters other than sonic, tails, and robotnik like amy, metal sonic, knuckles, shadow, chaotix, blaze, silver, ect
    - have them all be useful and playable unlike generations and forces
    - have the animators of the unleashed OP work on the cutscenes
    - have a serious story worked on by writers of the sonic comics
    - crush 40 soundtrack and no changes with the voice cast cause I acctually like them
    bonus: have a remake of the adventure games (mabey heroes and StH but I could care less)
    If all that happens then we might have the best 3D sonic since SA2.

  • @OnlySSSTuna
    @OnlySSSTuna 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The boost overall just needs better controls.That way it won't have to rely on too much automated sequence to keep Sonic going in the right path. Also another way is to have difficulty settings and letting you level up your speed, and better yet, choose the speed you want the boost to go at. Maybe even add a feature in the skills(like in generations) that lets you pick between the boost and the spindash as well as new moves to go along with them.

  • @akeemtaylor8375
    @akeemtaylor8375 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Lets all be honest. As much as sonic 06 was bad, its a perfect example of good level design. Mainly sonic stages. The gameplay and combat was really broken but the level design is very good. There was multiple paths thaat awarded you for exploration, some of them required yo to think outside the box. The problem tho is that the levels are to wide. If sonic team can take 06 level design and find a way to make it work with a boost that you can only use when you build up speed, i think we could have something really good. Remeber speed is supposed to be earned not given to you.06 also managed to have somehwat exciting moments that were controlled better then forces. It was clear what you were supposed to do for those qtes. I think people fail them as wnat your supposed to do is told through dialogue and most people dont pay attentin to it. If they fail the qte the play should be forced to take a longer route but the player shouldnt be killed. I feel that people these are blinded by a games flaws and cant see there posegive aspects.

    My ideal 3D game has always been one with semi-open world levels utilizing wisp abilities. More than that, adding in a lot of the moves and abilities that you could unlock in the Adventure games, and also limiting the amount of boost wisps. That way the boost is an ABILITY, not a necessity. It's useful for speedrunning and people who know the level well. I'd also like to see an actual darker story that doesn't take itself too seriously. I mean, it's still a Sonic game, so if takes itself too seriously it just comes off as laughable (I won't name any games here... ;) ). Anyway, that's my shtick.
    Oh! And make more unique bosses that aren't solely boost-based. That'd be a nice change.

      I'd rather they either rethink or remove the Wisps. I don't like how, instead of expanding on Sonic's gameplay, Wisp Transformations completely change the way you control the character. It's jarring and unnatural. It's also a point I can give in favour of the Wispons from Forces.
      I don't see why Boost Wisps should exist at all. All they do is give you Boost at certain points, restricting further when the player can Boost or not. What I would like to see is a rewarding trick system, where if you narrowly dodge an obstacle or combo a bunch of actions together (like in UnWiished) you get rewarded with Boost. The more pro you are and the riskier you play, the faster you go. And for the new guys, they won't have as much Boost so they'll have to move slower, which is easier.
      I don't think a dark story is too necessary. Just one with high stakes. If Sonic Unleashed's outstanding opening is any indication, you can give a sense of danger and urgency to a situation in a story with very little dialogue and cutscene length. I think that it would be nice if the basic plot was very simple and quick (an awesome cutscene at the beginning and a climactic finish at the end). And, should you be a superfan who wants to delve into the lore and backstory of the world and characters, that should be optional. You could either make side-info collectables, pause screen descriptions (like Kirby) or just something that you get access to over time (Rosalina's story in Galaxy 1).

    What we need to do 1st is replace Roger Craig Smith he's just not cool enough to voice Sonic in a serious story like Griffith & Drummond were. Then we need better lines, Adventure 2 didn't care about the lines matching up with mouth movement & it's 1 of the best games in the series alongside Sonic Adventure. Story is important, we want something that can get serious, we want characters who aren't Sonic to be playable. Forces having both Shadow playable & the Custom Hero were selling points to the game. Sonic hasn't been that likeable as a character for the last 8 years & that needs to change & we can't have Roger's Sonic shoved down our throats that's killing the series.
    What made Adventure 2 so successful was it taking the 3 most well liked playstyles from it's predecessor & having 6 (12 if you count 2P) characters share them. Why can't we do that again? Heroes did something similar by having 4 Teams of 3 each with extremely similar playstyles, sure it would have been better if they weren't bound to the same stages or had more differences, although the point is Characters Work! Take Your Time Sonic Team, give us quite a few characters with a couple playstyles. Have Sonic playable, have Knuckles playable & able to glide around & smash stuff, have Shadow play similar to Sonic. 06 only flopped because it was rushed, it had so much potential though. We deserve to have 12 playable characters split among 3 or 4 different categories for once after all these years.
    We should try to return to the Adventure style again & stop throwing all your eggs in 1 blue basket named Sonic. Bring back characters that are well liked like Cream, Blaze, Chaos, & Tikal & make them part of the story again even if not all of them are playable. Don't fear Deeper story telling, context is good, if you want to play it safe give us several playable characters. If Boost Sonic only had 4 stages, while Knuckles & Rouge who do more exploring that's slow paced get 6 stages that would work better than what we are getting. Also please stop bringing back Classic in Modern games, it was a dumb idea the 1st time & was a clear mistake for Forces. Also please bring back both Infinite & Custom Hero they were good additions to the main cast!

    I really want a full 3D soinc game again, and with 3D platforming as well. (no straight lines where you just quickstep, thats not really 3d gameplay) another thing I want is challenge. The newer games are just to easy. I understand you want to please casual gamers. My advice is to add a easy mode. Casual gamers are going to pick that option and be able to play the game, but I feel challenging games are really fun and you should try it again. Make sure the enemies do something and pose a treat to the player, and add variety to the enemies. Not just how the look but how they attack and how you defeat them. We NEED new level ideas. I don't need to explain, it's a must. No classic soinc, I don't want to say which sonic I'm talking about.
    Here's a list of stuff I would personally like-multiple playable characters-a grand adventure-chao garden(please)-character development -more cutscenes -no wisps

    @Sonic Team, classic Sonic is overrated for 3D Sonic games, you should leave classic Sonic for CLASSIC GAMES only such as Mania, and there's no need to use side scroll platforming for modern Sonic, you did a decent job in the Adventure saga, but nowadays the side scroll platforming feels a bit forced and it's not enjoyable, at least for fully 3D experiences.

    When it comes to Sonic games story yes they don’t need to be dark and mature (even though that’s how I liked them) but they also don’t need to be so childish and kid friendly. Sonic’s current games story feels like its being made with 7 to 11 year olds in mind. Like a mix between the cheesiest kids show and most mainstream anime with them constantly talking about the power of friendship and all that cliche crap. They should be aiming towards an in between with series plot and dialogue. Have it be centered with ages 13-17 year olds in mind. The reason why I still continue to love this series besides it’s addictive gameplay is because of my fondness for the characters that resonated and made me care for them as a child and young adult. If any Sonic games starting from Sonic Colors onward was how I was introduced to the series I don’t see me ever becoming found for any of the characters given how they’ve been represented and portrayed to this current time.

    I agree with on some of your points. Management is a huge problem with Sonic Team and I think it's because they're trying please everyone with Sonic games and they end up pleasing no one. As for gameplay, I love the Boost. I still think it has a lot potential and should be the main style but Sonic Team doesn't build on it like they should; they made some good strides like the Wisps in Colors, the Skill Shop and improved drifting in Generations, Custom character creation in Forces but then they take steps backwards in other areas, some games more than others. They should of build on the concept of the reflex-based obstacles and challenges from Unleashed Daytime stages. As for an open-world Sonic game, I'm not against it and I think it's a great idea in thoery but it's the practice that concerns me. What would be the goal? Would it be a collectathon or mission based? Would it make the game drag? I think if Sonic Team did it more similar to Sa1 and Unleashed meaning keep the levels streamlined and speedy but with multiple pathways and reflex-based obstacles and have big open hub world's with lots of optional missions, exploration, and rewards to serve as happy medium between fans.

    -Have a coherent focus for both story and gameplay.
    -Stop using nostalgia as a crutch. I don’t want to see Green Hill for the 100th time. Come up with more original stages with their own unique gimmicks and atmosphere.
    -No more 2D in the Modern games. Because the Mania team will most likely be back for future 2D games, it’ll come across as redundant. Make 3D Sonic games completely 3D.
    -If Sonic doesn’t have an identity, the series will continue to suffer. Quit being so experimental with Sonic (giving characters guns, a sword or a werewolf transformation) Stick to something and build on it.
    -No more automation. Give the player full control at all times. Babying the player by taking control away will ruin the experiences
    -Give us spacious and branching level design so we can always experience levels differently. Giving the player plenty of options will keep the player engaged. Bad level design can ruin the overall game no matter how flashy the effects are or how detailed the models look.
    -I would love to see another Adventure styled Sonic game. Because while I did enjoy the boost gameplay over the past decade, it’s starting to become stale and I miss being able to explore levels at my own pace while still enjoying high speed action. But again, that’s just my preference.
    -Better story telling. Yeah we don’t play Sonic games for story. But I would still love a cohesive story even if it’s simple. Better character interactions, an interesting premise (even if it’s just Eggman trying to take over the world again) and maybe a nice twist here and there. Sonic Unleashed is a great example of an interesting plot. (Again, just my preference) Sonic rushing around different continents to put the pieces of the planet back together was such a joyride for me and I deeply enjoyed the bond that Sonic and Chip grew on the adventure together. It also wouldn’t hurt to send a nice message out to people. Or a life lesson. Like “slow down and enjoy life” or “you don’t need super powers to be a hero” that kind of thing. (just examples) In summary, Sonic can be a great franchise again. Sonic Team just needs a better foundation and need to spend their time more wisely. Not to mention rushing out games for a holiday release. Please take your time. Skipping the holidays won’t effect sales. Making bad games will. XD
    We love Sonic and that’s why we expect more from you. Thanks for listening. (If you see this)

    All I really want is an ACTUAL darker storyline. A sonic that’s not comedic 24/7 and actually has a seriousness to his nature rather than saying jokes at the wrong times, and stages that don’t last less than 2 minutes long and that aren’t 100% linear where you’re literally running in a straight line for 30 seconds plus using boost.... that’s not how the boost formula should be used. The boost should be EARNED...not just something available whenever the hell u want it to be. Ughhhhhhhh COME ON SONIC TEAM. Please for God’s sake make us a 3D Sonic game that’s NOT forgettable after 2 months time!!! PLEASE!!! Bring Sonic back to what he used to be... fun, exhilarating, and just an all out joy to play. Maybe one day...

    First, 3D Sonic games will only be good again when Takashi Iisuka and Aaron Webber leave Sonic Team. As they being director and brand manager, consecutively, they have direct input in the outcome of the games, and therefore must be replaced immediately.
    Second, even though Utopia is a cute little tech demo, it's not really a game: it doesn't have a goal, it doesn't have progression, it doesn't have a winning condition and you can't lose. It gets boring quickly. I don't see how Sonic could really work in a huge open world environment since Sonic is such a goal-driven platformer. Not to mention that the biggest flaw in recent Sonic games is the level design and, as levels become more open and open (as is the case with open world levels), the complexity increases and it gets more likely to designers put together poor level design/worlds.
    And finally, I believe 3D Sonic should be under the responsibility of Travelers Tales and the guys responsible for Sonic LEGO Dimensions. Now those guys understand Sonic. That was the best Sonic experience we had in years: great controls, great goal-driven level design with momentum and platforming, and nice concise story-telling. Just get rid of the combat mechanics and we got ourselves a prime quality 3D Sonic game.

    This guy's right about one thing: it's hard to see where you're going when boosting. That's why it's a bad idea to do it in 2D sections. But I think that the boost formula can be done well. Mind you, the reason forces felt slow when you weren't boosting is because Sega basically turned the joystick sensitivity down to -10. Throwing ideas out there, what if there was a slow-time section in a sonic game; a section where you would be doing things like dodging closely spaced debris in slow motion? That's something I'd like to see...perhaps that could be employed in 2D sections whenever you boost? I don't know.
    Better yet, when boosting in 2D sections, cues would be given to help.

    There was a mechanic in the Sonic Advance series that often goes unnoticed. If you accelerate at a high speed, you go into a fast mode, where you are faster, but you need to keep up the momentum to keep this state. I think it would be cool if the 3D sonic game was about keeping this momentum, but an open world doesn't feel Sonic imo.

    Sonic Team please redesign Sonic, nothing too drastic but something to make the current models look less souless (even if Forces tried to give them a lot of face expressions).

      Honestly, they should take the S06 Models (which imo are the best 3D sonic models), make it alot more high-def, some SA2 features like Soap Shoes, and we should be good.

    Great video as always Sam! Since a lot of people have shared their thoughts on gameplay, my thoughts on what Modern Sonic gameplay should be like:
    The levels are open and very wide with long stretches of roads. There are platforming parts in key areas. Kind of similar to Rise of Lyric actually, but of course with better level design and more consistent "speed sections" that feel more natural and aren't gimmicks. No 2D.
    Use momentum based physics, kinda like Utopia, but don't make Sonic unable to gain any speed without momentum. Momentum should speed him up, but after all he's the fastest thing alive, he should be able to run up a slope without much momentum, just slower.
    Make the homing attack like it was in Generations. When not locked on (homing dash), it should be like Sonic Adventure.
    Keep the stomp, spin jump, quickstep, drift etc.
    Make the light speed dash as it was in Unleashed.
    Replace the slide with a roll. Crouching and pressing the jump button powers up the spin dash. The roll is highly affected by momentum.
    Make the boost activatable only above a certain speed. The boost is limitless and it goes extremely fast, so it can be used to clear the wide, long stretches of roads that I talked about. The drawback? You lose some control, you can't turn very effectively, and since you're extremely fast you are likely to miss secrets. Since it can only be activated above a certain speed you can't use it to easily skip platforming sections.
    Controllability etc. should feel like Generations. Loved that game's controls, especially with PC 60fps.
    Please bring back camera controls.
    That's all that comes to my mind, and the things I'll keep in mind if I one day get assigned with a Sonic related project at some time at some place. Would like to hear opinions too.
