For anyone also struggling with the replacement struts being too long, after an hour I found online that you should "compress them slightly", which means to hold the strut against something solid and hit the other end with an hammer a couple times; compare it with the old strut until they match. Just had to take everything off to change a tail light bulb, should have put new supports on while it was apart 😂
