  • Early Spring is the perfect time to start fertilizing plants in the landscape. It provides much-needed nutrients as they begin to wake up and put on new growth. You can start feeding in late-March into early-April which will last all the way to mid-summer. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about what fertilizers we recommend for different types of plants along with the benefits of spring fertilizing. The 4 main fertilizers we recommend for spring fertilizing are Espoma Organic Holly-tone, Plant-tone, Bulb-tone and Bio-tone. Holly-tone is used for evergreens and any acid-loving plants while Plant-tone is used for deciduous shrubs and perennials. We recommend a nice feeding of Bulb-tone for your spring-blooming bulbs such as Daffodils, Tulips, and Hyacinth as their foliage begins to emerge. You can also apply Bulb-tone when you plant summer blooming bulbs like Gladiola and Dahlias. Spring is also one of the best times to add new plants to your landscape once the soil is workable and not soggy. For new plantings, we recommend adding Espoma Organic Bio-tone to the planting hole to help new plant material establish and expand their root system.

    Good to know we are right on schedule because we just finished pruning and fertilized with Plant-Tone, Holly-Tone and Rose-Tone. Didn’t have any Bio-Tone though so we used fish bone meal instead.

    So much easier than scooping moist icky Miracle Grow granules into my watering can, filling it up, stirring it, walking to the plants, watering, going back to repeat. 😏

      Lisa for edibles indeed. that mystery blue water works well for ornamentals but blueberries or anything you plan to enjoy the essence and top flavor of organics are the way to go baby! (:

    Thank you for a detailed information on fertilizers. Which one do I use for green giant evergreen trees? Holly tone or plant tone? What about on roses?

    How much of a difference do these fertilizers make compared to without? I'm thinking about trying out the Bio-Tone with the Plant-tone.

    Thanks very helpful video..can i apply holly tone to Thuja Emerald Green? I potted a bulb and bareroot roses ten days back in pots, can I add bio tone or bulb tone now and how. I only do container gardening.

      Yes, you can apply Holly-tone to your Thuja! We recommend following the instructions on the back of the bag to determine how much fertilizer to apply.
      For Roses, they actually have a Rose-tone product that we recommend using! Again, we recommend following the instructions on the back of the bag to determine how much to apply. Also note that fertilizer depletes faster in containers so you might need to apply it more frequently than you would for plants in the ground.

    Whats best for Box wood??
    I have found plants uprooted when I used Bio tone. Critters like it too!!

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Natural fertilizers can attract some animals and repel others. It sounds like something was digging around the boxwood, but it could be that you have earthworms or insects that the animal was searching for too. Apply a granular repellent like Plantskydd around the plants. Bio-tone is our go to root starter, so we just use it at the time of planting. Plant-tone is our favorite multipurpose plant food. Boxwood & arbs don't need extra acidity like other evergreens, so we use a neutral plant food 3x per year on evergreens, spring, midsummer & late fall.

      Flower-tone can be used anytime spring through midsummer. It is typically applied once a month May-September on any annuals or perennial plants.
