You could put turnbuckles in each corner of the shade cloth to tighten/loosen for the perfect fit.

I just moved to Albuquerque where the sun is probably as intense as in Arizona. I have been contemplating how to protect my garden. Your idea is doable. Thank you. As I read the comments, someone asked if it will allow water to pass through it. I had to smile out loud as I asked myself "what's that". Good video Angela. I'm going to show this to my children. Hint!

I dont know of anywhere even close to how intense the sun and heat is in Phoenix area. Other than Death valley. Though im sure the sun shades are good in most sunny states that get over 95 degrees. I have no idea how her garden is so green. her water bill must be outragous.

I’m in the Inland Empire, Southern California, about half way between Los Angles and Palm Springs. Like you, the heat here is very intense with 3+ months of 100 F weather. I have been using shade cloth for a few years now and it works great, though I need an upgrade to my system. I don’t get monsoons, but good grief the wind. Moderate to strong winds at sunset almost every night and then the joy that are Santa Ana winds. I now have a massive collection of spring clamps and bungee cords of various sizes to hold my shade cloth in place from the wind. I’ve had some sections break loose and beat a few plants into shreds. My shade cloth is in two sections, draped over an old gazebo frame that I open and close like a stage curtain. I do have one side of my garden that faces due west and get blasted all day and needs protection, so that section of my shade cloth angles down to the ground. This is what I have to tie down so strongly and I clamp the rest of the cloth to the gazebo frame.

Thank you so much for this. I have been struggling to figure out how to put up a shade cloth on my new garden. I’m looking to put up a shade cloth about 10’ x 40’. It’s been a challenging project.

I like how you ran the cables across the middle of the cloth to help support the middle better. Thanks for sharing and video!

Angela, you give me so much hope for my garden! I was rashly going to build some raised beds and madly plant away. Thanks to you and Self Sufficient Me (an aussie channel) I am taking this year to plan it first. I will begin with the autumn planting season. Thank you!!!

Looks great, I live in Louisiana where the temps get to 100 to 102 during the summer, I am so lucky that my garden gets the morning sun and then west sun in the afternoon. With the trees it shades most of the west sun and my garden loves that! Love your channel

Both of you are lucky. My garden faces West so it doesn't receive morning sun and I don't have trees or anything to block it. Shade cloth is my best friend.

Very relevant. Last summer we - temperate, south west, Western Australia - broke our own records for the most number of days and most consecutive days about 40c. Horrible. That followed the previous year of hottest average across Australia and hottest day on record in my state.

Looks great! The wind will find any weak spots for sure. Like most things, incremental upgrades may be needed if we don’t get it on the first try. 100 + days are right around the corner.

buy cheap white thrift store king sheets and drape across makeshift supports. Taking down when not needed. I’m ’IT’ for tending to my small garden…..but/and it is fun for me. I’m near Atlanta so not as hot as Arizona…..but…..hot/humid enuf for me here.

This is a great video I do have a question though I planted my pepper plants pretty close to my tomato plants this year and I’m wondering if I should get the 40% for vegetables so my peppers get plenty of sun or should I get the 50% and make sure my tomatoes get plenty of shade what are your thoughts on this? I also live in Arizona.North western AZ. Thank you!

Shade cloth doing well and holding up after 3 years - it has stretched out some from the wind, but the crossing wires underneath help with that.

How has this set up done in the whipping wind the last couple of years?
We set up our shade last month, panicked with last night's hint at a monsoon (wind, lightning, no rain) and took it down. Our 20' by 20' is pretty bulky to be putting up and taking down in anticipation of storms but we want to protect our investment, too! 😅 We may just have to trust the fabric and send a prayer up.

It should just run through - it's a 50% weave. Hopefully, we find out soon! :)

Industrial Metal Supply. They come in 10-foot lengths. Industrial will cut them at a cost. You would need to weld the hook on it - it doesn't come like that.
