I'm so glad I found this since I live in Central Texas where too much sun is also a problem in summer. I discovered accidentally that afternoon shade was the key for many plants to continue producing.
This is my first year using shadecloth here in TX. My plants are not burning up like they did last year and I'm not having to water as often. Loving the shadecloth.
We were considering not even trying to garden after June. The Phoenix summer of 2020 made it so difficult. But, it’s a new year and you have given some great suggestions. Bring it on 🤠.
When we visited AZ worm farm they said you don't want to leave your soil dormant - that it needs the plants to keep the microbes alive. I love Angela's videos too, such great info
I'm so glad to have found your channel. I watch many gardening channels but very few cover the challenges of growing in AZ. I garden in southern AZ, zone 9a. Last summer was brutal due to the lack of summer rains and cooler temps. Hopefully this summer will be better. Keep the info coming.
Thanks for the video! Another interesting aspect is gardening at high elevation. I’m up here in Show Low at 6800’. Even tho it is usually in the high 80’s at most, I use shade cloth due to the intensity of the sun. Yes, the higher the elevation the more intense the UV rays. 🤷🏼♀️ And the fact that my garden gets no shade during the day whatsoever. Shade cloth saved my garden last year!
Thanks! I am so hoping I don’t lose everything this summer…this is my first year gardening on my patio and I’m learning what will grow best in each location.
I was glued to this video! I don't live in Arizona but Northern Utah gets extremely hot and dry! Last year my garden burned (literally) to death. We've had 2 weeks of 100+ degree weather and I am going to install shade cloths this weekend!
Angela, thank you for all you do for us arizona gardeners by sharing your knowledge. Are you going to do a what to plant this month for April? I am moving into my house tomorrow and look forward to starting my garden here in April!
Thank you sooo much! I have been looking for a video just like yours explaining what to shade in the garden and how. Here in Australia, central Victoria, our summers can get up to 47 deg Celsius, which is way over 100deg F. In summer the sun is high and the garden is in full sun in some parts, as some gardeners suggest for growing some vegetables and fruit but the sun can be so intense and literally burn the leaves and fruit. I now realise we must have hot Arizona summers like you. However this summer it was unseasonally cooler as we only reached 40deg Celsius- but I still was forced to use shade cloth over the blackberries.
Wow! An outstanding video explaining why so many of the vegetable plants shriveled and died in the intense heat found in the southern exposure of my garden. To think that the addition of a shade would have made a difference.
The definitions for exposure are flipped for you. Sorry I didn’t address that in the video... I’m sure you know that though. Enjoy your cooler weather!
I love the images you added! I took several screenshots, but I saved the video on a playlist because I know I’ll be coming back to it. West Texas sun is pretty tough! 🥵 Thank you for the videos, they’re always so helpful and inspiring.
I am so glad I found this channel! I am following you because gardening in Phoenix is a challenge for me and you look like you have figured it out already. So thanks for this channel!
Great video. Thanks for posting.. I use the shade of the oak trees in my yard to protect my garden from the late afternoon west sun. Zone 9b central Florida. Growing food outdoors in raised beds 365 days a year.
Oh em gee this was amazing. I am in Alabama where it gets humid and in the 100’s. I’m in 8a and our Spring is a short one and it stays hot in the fall as well. Thanks for all you do.
I put up a structure to support a shade cloth. It was difficult and I was doing it alone! I wanted something that I could pull back over the top, like a curtain, only suspended above the plants. I had a lot of sagging so I had to 'fix' that problem. Didn't work like I wanted but I did get something up. I have direct sun all day and wide open space and no trees for dappled sun. Think I'm going with 8 ft, T-posts now because it can be easy-up, easy-down.
Please do a video on espalier trees. I found some fruit and camellias at a nursery that were already started as an espelier tree but I’d like to know how to care for one and possibly do it myself to save the additional upfront costs.
I have used some old landscape fabric that has some holes....as temporary shade cloths.....or small blankets, up off my plants during hot time of day. I remove the following morning. Using only if temps get very very hot. Thks for your guidance!! Ahna Atlanta/Georgia
Good video! Your video is very informative, with the relevant information relating to the subject-matter clearly and well presented Thank you for creating and posting your video on TH-cam.
Thank you Angela, informative as always. What kind of posts are the ones with the black balls on top? I like the look of those and would like to get some. Thank you.
Hello Angela at minute 8:50 you show some rolls of shade cloth in a store. What store was that? Thanks! Your videos have been an amazing guide and I share them all the time.
I think as long as it gets plenty of water it should be fine. I will soon put in a passion fruit plant and Ive been worrying about shade but honestly, it’s impossible to shade passion fruit if it’s a spot that gets full sun or half day full afternoon sun because the vines grow 40 feet wide or more
Let the top inch of soil dry out a bit - that may help. I also use these traps amzn.to/2QXFTXo and this blog post may help growinginthegarden.com/organic-pest-control-that-really-works/
well thank u, you answered many of my questions with this video I only have one more, what do you do with a peach?ita pretty big now and the leafs and fruits get burned 🥺, we live in Tij (close de San Digo) and my plants are burning on june & july, I hope to do better this 2021🏅👌🤓
New to your channel. Second summer in Utah and using shade cloth, it helps so much! Love your rebar structure, hoping there is a video about it? If not what is the top part made of? The "cover" for the rebar that keeps it from poking through the cloth?
The shade cloth I bought from HD says it blocks 90% of UV rays. Is that percentage we are looking at when deciding which shade cover to use? Because with it up it is clearly not blocking 90% of the light. Maybe half the light is being blocked. We are in Bakersfield Ca. Pretty hot dry summers here. 95-105 is pretty common.
I love your videos! I am new to gardening in AZ (Tempe!) and have learned so much. I look forward to every new post. :) I am wondering what you think about growing vegetables under tree shade? particularly dappled light like palo verdes create?
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks! I hadn't thought of that. I am just seeing this so feel free to ignore this same question in the comments on another video.

Angela, I'm in Chandler and I'm going to be out of town for 10 days in July. Can I put up the shade and leave it up for that time? How would that impact my plants?
Hi Angela, I live in Gilbert and started growing tomatoes a few months ago. When do you think we should add shade to the tomatoes? It's only early June but it will be over 110f next week. Thanks!
Hi Angela, you have some really great shade structures in your garden! I know some were custom made for you by a friend. Are any of the options shown available somewhere? I really like what you show at :19 - :24, the simple black posts that appear to be inside the bed topped with what looks like round finials holding the shade cloth on. Is that something I might be able to find online?
Great information! If I may ask - what are the dimensions for the trellis you have attached to block walls (the steel mesh ones installed via screws). We are thinking of getting them but not sure to build them 1. which can be tied directly to cinder blocks or 2. the one which go in ground and stand parallel to block wall
Hello, I’m Canadian in Southern Japan. I’m growing a lot of watermelon this summer. It’s late July and 42C (105F). I hear watermelon likes full sun, but I wonder how much sun and heat is too much? Do you think watermelon would benefit from shade cloth or is it unnecessary? The watermelon is growing in a south-facing location where it receives full sun almost all day. Do you figure the shade cloth is required or not?
I don't have mine shaded at all, but it does get some natural afternoon shade. Monitor you plant and see how it tolerates the sun. Shade it if it seems to be struggling.
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thank you. I put up shade cloth for one day, then decided it was unnecessary, so took it down. My watermelon seems to have been tolerating the heat and direct sun. I just harvested the first watermelon yesterday and it was the sweetest watermelon I have ever eaten. It was so delicious, I even ate the rind! Apparently the rind is full of vitamins and minerals and is healthy to eat.
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thank you! I have tons of bubblewrap. It was used during the spring (Zone 9) to protect my lettuce and it WORKED GREAT. So now I'm trying it for the summer garden. Thanks again.
Hi, my husband and I want to start a vegetable garden here in Mesa AZ. We have a very small backyard. The only area we have gets alot of morning sun but not after noon sun all year round. Will this scenario be okay or will this not be enough sun?
My book is about container gardening, not Arizona specific. Shade after 2:30 is probably ok - see how your plants do. If they aren't tolerating it then consider adding some.
What shade cloth manufacturer would you recommend to buy from as its hard to know which brand is good. Looking for a 40% sunblock shade cloth UV resistant as well. I don,t see any in my local big box stores.
Thank you for your response but they only have 50% & 30% only in white. I think 30% is to low & 50% to much. Is there a difference between a black shade cloth cloth & white shade cloth.

It would probably be helpful to have the shade up while you are gone.
Do you have suggestions for percentage of shade cloth for the high desert (Mojave desert).
Typically 40-50% is good for most vegetables. Check with local gardeners to see what they use in your area to be sure.

Once daytime temps are consistently above 100°F if they don't naturally receive afternoon shade then go ahead and add it.

Do your metal trellises ever get hot enough to burn your plants?
Hasn’t been an issue - the trellis is usually covered by plants, especially in the summer.
Doesn’t the shade cloth inhibit pollinators
Keeping it a couple of feet above the plants helps with that.
What shade cloth manufacturer would you recommend to buy from as its hard to know which brand is good. Looking for a 40% sunblock shade cloth UV resistant as well. I don,t see any in my local big box stores.

Ha!
Why is it important not to let the shade cloth touch plants?
Can damage plant tissue, cause pest issues. Good airflow above plants is important.
Shady lady , imagine that.
