    Oh wow. I've been trying to learn this, particularly the famous bass drum bit for so long and watching this it has finally clicked. It really helps too with the sticking shown. Thanks do much for a master class. Best wishes

    The right support hardware can help on a piece like this; for my Tama®/Hoshino® kit, I'd probably want to substitute specific components from the Sonor®/Hohner® Giant Step™ range (viz., a GTEP heel-and-toe kick pedal with Vic Firth® VKB-1 on the heel drive and VKB-2 on the toe drive; plus an HH674MC hi-hat tower).

    I'm nit picking, but I'd bet Bonham was singling his snare. Starting the 16th trips, started w/L is a signature Bonham sound. When I do my basic 16th trips around the kit, my first hit is often on the ride or hats, and sounds SMOOTH. Great job w/cowbell

      absolutely... the sticking is completely up to you, so long as you get the sound and feel right.

    Aren't the bass drum doubles you've notated as 32nd notes, are they not meant to be sextuplets?

    • @iopklmification
      @iopklmification 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mikaël Capelle Yes they are, Jay is playing them as sextuplets when he plays at the tempo of the song.

    • @Thedrummersalmanac

      +RazzerKirk Good ear razzerKirk... Yes technically Bonham plays them as 16th triplets, but I have found it easier for students to find it in 32nd notes first... So I opted to chart them in 32nd notes for this breakdown. As iopklmification mentioned... at tempo, they will inevitably be felt more as 16th triplets just because of the tempo. True 32nd notes would be rigid, but once a student get's it, their feel and their ear will kick in.

      @int_enc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, in original recording sometimes john bonham played it as 32nd notes...and lots of time it became sextuplets

    • @beng4151
      @beng4151 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they are. And to note how difficult they are, I have never --- NEVER --- seen them in a piano/guitar book, either with songs or lessons.

    Apart from the introductory fill being slightly off feel and committing the ultimate cardinal sin of replacing Bonham's flawless foot technique with a double bass drum pedal, a rather solid lesson - nice job!

    The bass drum is triplets not 32nd notes

  • @alexanderhamilton9685
    @alexanderhamilton9685 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Approx 5:56 you played the triangle on the A of 3 when it was not notated.

  • @HadEnough745
    @HadEnough745 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The bass drum is wrong. In the section with the double hits on bass drum, they are broken triplets not straight 32nd notes. It shouldn't be written as straight notes. They are triplets! WTF?

    • @Thedrummersalmanac
      @Thedrummersalmanac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The music is a just a guide to help a student learn the groove. In my experience, I have found it is easier for students to find the 32nd notes at a slower tempo in this situation, as opposed to the triplets. Once the student can play it at tempo... the difference between 32's and 16th triplets sound and feel very close. Once you can play it up to speed, your ear and feel will kick in to swing the phrase appropriately. But as far as sweeping doubles in general, you can notate the phrase either way and it still has the same affect... once you reach a certain tempo threshold.
