    What kind of paste did you use to clean the spine before using your tool to scrape the old glue off?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is just rice starch paste. I use Nori brand paste. There are lots of others that work fine too.

    • @AaronPangDrums
      @AaronPangDrums ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, from my understanding, rice starch paste is a glue. Does the paste also somehow also work to remove old glue and stuff?

    Hey! Just started getting into Bible Rebinding! I was wondering where you purchased the Oxford hollow paper. Is it a specific type? Lastly, what kind of meshing material did you use to reinforce the spine? Was it just normal poly ribbon mesh? Thanks! :)

    I glued a deer skin on the cover of my bible 30+ yrs ago and after that many years of use the bible maps came loose and lost and some of the other pages were falling out. I have another bible in fact the exact same bible only new that I gave to a friend and she said it was to heavy for her and she gave it back to me. Question: I want to do same thing to this bible but I want to use a different glue as the the one I did years ago got very stiff when dried like a board. What kind of glue can I use and still have the original cover flexible? Thanks in advance.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because this is an unusual binding choice you may run into troubles other than the glue but the answer, in general, is that a good quality PVA (poly vinyl acetate) glue will stay flexible. I can recommend Jade 403. Whether it will adhere deer-skin to the bible cover depends on some other things. Good luck with your project!

      The main thing is to look at the images on the websites of candidates to see what they plan to do to your book. Make sure you like what you see! Are they using methods and materials that will preserve the original as much as possible? I wrote a book about questions to ask the person doing the repair. saveyourbooks.com/product/order-book-restoration-unveiled/

    Do you think it's possible to make a soft cover bible into a hardcover by putting a piece of thin cardbord on the inside of the cover?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a little more complicated because of the hinge functionality but that is sort of how it works.

  • @RafaelRabinovich

    How did you treat/paint the leather

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the leather quality. Sometimes a little colored Good Quality shoe cream will do the trick but you can't just smear it on. Sometimes acrylic paints are the way to go.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a complicated question! One of the keys to making it look good is to pare the "leather" edges so they look good on the interior. Take some bookbinding courses before you begin so you can avoid some mistakes.

    Why is a hollow necessary?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While creating a hollow is not necessary for all books, the structure of books that are case-bound require a hollow space between the text-spine and case-spine. This can be created with a paper hollow which attaches the two spines, or just leaving the two spines disconnected works. Other kinds of binding do not require a hollow at all such as for a paperback.

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is glued with a hollow. Not directly. But all paperbacks are glued spine to spine. 😊. Good point!

    If the old glue is modern pva what do you dissolve it with please?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PVA glue is not the kind you can dissolve. However there are two different methods. One is to freeze the book because the PVA should crack off. I have never tried this though so test on a book you don't care about. Otherwise, Sometimes you can just re-activate the PVA with heat and it works to re-attach. Good luck!
