    Never worked with Leather much less did a bible rebind, I had a vintage 60 year old bible with the brittle cover literally crumbling apart, got my materials & tools (under $40) & did my Bible in a sheepskin cover, paste down leather liner, new ribbons & custom letters on cover. Took me a few hours for 2 days (about 6 hours total) I’m super happy with the results & it’s only possible because of you’re EXTREMELY informative & detailed video. Huge thanks Mr Frost. God bless you brother you’ve allowed me to use my Bible again 👍🏻

      Did u already have some of the tools? Specifically how did you do the letters? Did u already have that press?
      I’m sure that has to cost more than $40

    • @Danny_Servant_of_God
      @Danny_Servant_of_God 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MansterBear I cut corners for the letters I used my Cricut cutter & foil iron on (which I already had) the sheepskin leather was literally $7 on Amazon, glue $2, ribbons $4 & some miscellaneous tools like Xacto knife etc. really wasn’t hard or expensive (even if I didn’t have the Cricut my Bible would’ve just been letter-less. I didn’t not stitch I did not tool I did not do a 100% true rebind but it’s pretty close for the time energy cost & effort I put in. Which like I originally said was MINIMAL

      @@Danny_Servant_of_God that’s awesome. My wife has an old KJV passed down thru her family that’s starting to fall apart.
      I’d love to surprise her with something like this but I thought “man I don’t have all that stuff and I can’t go spend $300 on tools” lol

      @@MansterBear cool simply put I did a “poor man’s” version as I too did not want to spend $ on tools I’d only use a few times.

    More decades ago than I care to remember, I earned my bookbinding merit badge in the Boy Scouts. The task turned the paperback Boy Scout handbook into a linen hardback. We were taught by a man who bound the books in the basement of the main New Orleans library. I have my finished handbook unto this day (50+ years). As much as I love that old book, it looks nothing like the craftsmanship we see here.
    A couple of years ago, I found Frost Leather on the net. At that time, I had an off the shelf Zondervan Thompson Chain Reference NASB whose exterior was nothing to write home about. It was far from being a beautiful thing. Frost changed all that! After watching this video and seeing all the steps involved, I’m convinced that I got the best end of the bargain. If any of you out there are like me and do not have the equipment or talent required for this level of work, I can recommend this young man without reservation. I now have a family heirloom to leave to my children.

    I have a Bible that was given to me as a birthday gift 46 years ago. It definitely needs rebinding, and I thought that I might like to give it a try. But after watching this video I think I'll just put that Bible away in a safe place, 'cause this is much more difficult than I want to deal with. You do good work! Keep it up!

    I’m so glad you can do this so easily, gracefully and peacefully. It reiterates how artistically illiterate I am and makes me bow my head in shame for my “flip outs” if you’ve ever seen Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase when he works his tail off hanging Christmas lights on his house and when he tries to turn them on and they don’t work. He at first starts to wiggle wires lightly, then a little more aggressively and before you know it he’s destroying his yard decorations and finally goes for one more try with the wires and as he brings the two ends together…. RIGHT THERE just before the electricity arcs or jumps from one wire to the other his face and the sound he’s making is me doing this book rebinding. Great job. I would absolutely love to be able to do this like you it seems so relaxing and satisfying. Beautiful work.

      That is funny lol when I first started re-binding almost 10 years ago, it was a struggle, and it would take me days just to get one rebuying done. So keep practicing and at some point it’ll become easier and easier like any trade.

    This is so cool. I’ve done a very small amount of leather work. Coolest thing I’ve made is a cover for my camping hatchet.
    But my wife and I have about 18 bibles in the house…
    One of them is a super old KJV. I swear the paper in it is thicker/better than résumé paper. It was passed down from her grandfather to her, and has some pages sewn in for officiating weddings. But no one in her family knows where the Bible came from before her grandfather or why those pages are in there.
    This is making me want to practice on a few of the extras, then surprise her by rebinding that one when I feel I’m good enough and know I won’t ruin it.
    The cover is also old cheap imitation leather and starting to fall apart.
    Thank you for sharing this awesome info. I know you’ve put so much time and sweat into what you’ve learned. It’s great that you bless others by freely sharing it. God bless brother!

Why anyone would rebind a cambridge goatskin is beyond my comprehension, but I am impressed by your work. I will be contacting you soon. Do you have Bibles that you sell? Thats funny. Im actually not a drummer, but can spin a pen around like a drummer. Thank you for your kind words! I don't currently have any editions for sell, Just trying to keep up with orders with little time for other projects. Using thin leathers is a way to avoid having to skive, but greatly limits you on what leathers and styles you are able to do.

      I do sell my work! We don't offer gilding services though, that is a different trade entirely.
      Placing adding pages to a bible is difficult, as you need the pages printed in Signatures, which only an expensive printing can make this possible.

    Thank you for your videos! I live in Switzerland and am going to start binding my own bibles and they are a great help. Do you have any tips on picking out leather? Thickness for the cover and liner? Liner pre-skived, or should the liner and the cover be the same thickness? Do you only use goatskin, or are there other materials you work with? I'm having the hardest time finding the right leather. Maybe this would be a good future video!

    Can you do a video on raised hubs?

    How did you remove the original cover? You mentioned it was somewhat difficult.

    Thank you so much for making this video!
    One question, do you ever add any extra length to the width of the cover to account for the hinges?
    I've always had trouble getting the yapp the same on the front of the bible as it is on the top and bottom.

      Thanks for the comment! There are a few variables to consider; thickness of the leathers, thickness of the raised hubs, and total length of the spine. So it will be by trial and error, but if the leather itself or raised hubs add bulk once it wraps around the Bible, I would make an adjustment on the length of the cover itself.

    Brother this is an awesome video. Beautiful gift. Would you recommend rebinding a Thompson Chain thicker bible with thick cow skin or sokoto goat

    • @frostLeather
      @frostLeather  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d use the sokoto over a thick Cowhide, I don’t like using thick leathers for any bible rebinds.

    So at 1:08:30ish when you make the center slit, do you want the text block on top of the inside liner or just perfectly on the inside of it? If that makes sense.

      you want the liner tap to match perfectly with the length of the Bible; too short and it looks funny, too long and will be a terrible finish.

    Quick question...what's the spine material from Hobby Lobby you referenced? Really appreciate this video. It has helped me dip my toe in the water of repairing several Bibles we have around the house.

      Hello! The spine material isn’t from hobby lobby, it is Kraft Tex Synthetic Leather paper.
