    I thought the cover spine was supposed to be separate from the book, so it bows out instead of in when the book is opened. Is that not right?

    • @josephp2229
      @josephp2229 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats a different kind of spine. There are quite a few different kinds. Afaik this seems to be a “perfect” spine. The one you mentioned has better support though.

    • @kenthomas1109
      @kenthomas1109 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree - this book should have a “hollow” - that spine is too rigid for a perfect binding.

    Thank you! This was so helpful! I have a BRAND NEW hardcover journal and I guess that the glue was defective because it came apart just like this one the first time I opened it and a big chunk of dried glue also fell out 😩. I’m hoping this works fingers crossed

    Thank you. What was the self adhesive linen for?

    • @rebeccawalker1819
      @rebeccawalker1819  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It helps keep the pages together and binding tight.

    • @LibertyForAll1
      @LibertyForAll1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Where is the self adhesive linen tape used? Do you put it on after the book is dried, 48 hours later? I'm not sure how you use it.

  • @martinthatsall1518

    Watch out for self-adhesive products, they always start to harden and fail after a decade or so. Generally irreversible too. OK for basically worthless books but never use on a valuable book.
    Yes the book will be "rock solid" because Rebecca has ignored how it was originally bound. It will not now lie flat as intended and as a result the hinges and spine will be over-stressed and fail again causing the cover to come off once more.

      Do you have alternative fixes?

    • @martinthatsall1518
      @martinthatsall1518 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, trawl through DAS Bookbinding videos to see how this type of work is done so as to be fully reversible and long lasting - the only way really.

    • @kenthomas1109
      @kenthomas1109 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheMewtataA few quick notes - a hollow would have been a good addition (basically a trifolded sheet of heavy paper with a hollow center, with the outside glued to the spine and the book block), and using PVA instead of Modge Podge - Modge Podge is better than craft glue, but dries more rigid than PVA, so would have left a more flexible solicitation for gluing the spine. The book itself was not a good quality bind in the first place, for sure - I might have added new endsheets altogether to help keep the book together.
      Librarians strive to make a book ready to take a beating, and this one sure will. Conservationists, in contrast, strive to maintain the integrity of the book, keeping it as close to the original as possible, usually making all their work reversible (e.g., putting a 3 inch wide piece of thick tape on the spine made the book stronger and ready to be pulled off the shelf a thousand times - a conservationist would never use clear tape on a book).

    The reason it split in the first place is because it was poorly made. There should be a hollow in the spine... this didn't have one to start with so straight away it was under stress. The same thing is going to happen again, I'm afraid. I'm afraid the book block shouldn't attach to the spine at all.

      *nod* This entire batch was all degrading in the same way. I periodically grabbed the ones falling to pieces to the worst extent and tried to patch them back together. These were the copies being used in the student choir room at a Catholic school. They got dropped on the floor, they fell off the shelf, etc. They had a hard life in addition to being shoddy on arrival. I wasn't going for archival quality, here--and I made the video yrs ago specifically for anybody else wanting to try to extend the life of the same books.

      Totally normal. As long as the end pages are still attached (or you make replacements), there is no issue with appearance.
