  • July 12, 2016 by FELIX CONTRERAS • Jane Bunnett knows a few things about Cuban music. She and her husband, trumpeter Larry Kramer, have been traveling to the island from their home base of Toronto for more than 30 years. They've collaborated with musicians there, as well as back home in Canada and on tours around the globe.
    So it should come as no surprise that when Bunnett chose to perform with some of the top young women musicians from the island, she'd choose some of the best of their generation. As you can sense from this video, the members of Maqueque are conservatory-trained, but also schooled in Afro-Cuban tradition.
    If you want to hear what Cuba sounds like today, then be sure to listen. It's a pleasure to watch and listen as Jane Bunnett and Maqueque share their passion with the world.

    @yerba buena Maqueque (pronounced Mah-Keh-Keh) includes Yissy Garcia on drums, Melvis Santa on percussion and vocals, Dánae Olano on piano, Magdelys Savigne on batá drums and congas and Celia Jiménez on bass.
    I love Janes playing, but the band is what is magic here. At least its not called the "jane bunnett band".
    She's talented but approached potentially adding to a part of a long history of musical appropriation. Her band kicks so much ass tho! what amazing women!

    I wish sopranos were more commonly used in jazz.

    • @howardmao3331
      @howardmao3331 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh ... they're pretty common. Pretty much every jazz saxophonist since Coltrane has doubled on soprano. Besides Coltrane, there's Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Chris Potter, and Joshua Redman.

    • @thotballune
      @thotballune 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** So? Even when players do double they're still not used as much as altos or tenors..

    If nothing else, I feel that the saxophone is way too prominent over the rest of the music. The audio engineer surely did his best - I guess he'd preferred not to be credited with this part of the video, anyway; much different from "the top young women musicians from the island, (...) some of the best of their generation". Eyes up here, Bob! That's worse than careless.

    it's become widely accepted that saxophonists don't need to consider their intonation or the quality of their tone at all when playing "jazz". case and point right here.

      Gary Likely i'm jealous of out-of-tune saxophonists with horrid tone?

    • @MagicSteve46
      @MagicSteve46 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      highly subjective,i think the soprano in general is not a pleasant instrument. I think an alto or a clarinet would have sounded more pleasant, she is a great player though.

    • @mindbodylightsound10
      @mindbodylightsound10 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MagicSteve46 if you want to hear some actual talented saxophonists that play in tune and consider "tone" before blowing into their instrument check out arno bornkamp, aurelia quartet, rascher quartet, paul desmond.

    • @lorenzmayer1240
      @lorenzmayer1240 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In my opinion there is more you can do than stay in tune when playing an instrument, as an aesthetic choice.
