There are many mixed opinions about Kekkai Sensen because of the unique storytelling, but if there is one thing we can all agree to, it's the awesome dancing animation during the ending credits. It wasn't long before the first parody videos of the dance choreography are being uploaded on TH-cam and it was simply hilarious, seeing various characters dancing to the ending song.
In short, Sugar song and bitter step was THE best Anime meme song in 2015. And after rewatching Kekkai Sensen last week, I immediately remembered the ending animation again and decided Sugar song and Bitter step as my next piano project.
I did my best to make a good compromise between the drum rhythm and the guitar bass line and the result is a groovy left hand accompaniment in 00:24. I've listened to many piano covers of this song on TH-cam but it looks like almost none of them has emphasized the "daaa-da-dam" rhythm 00:39 of the guitar, which I absolutely loved in the original song. I tried to include that rhythmic pattern in both the right hand and left hand, while still playing the main melody at the same time. Another part of the original song I really love is the small guitar interjection in 01:35. I liked that particular rhythm pattern so much, I repeated it again during the second chorus part in 02:03.
The bridge part of the original song is another interesting thing to arrange on the piano: Basically, the guitars were screaming at each other and the music is slowly descending into madness. I tried to recreate the same atmosphere on the piano starting at 02:32 with many chromatic notes in the right hand. This arrangement is also unique because I haven't used the usual three hand technique even once for the entire duration. I guess the rhythmical energy of the left hand is enough to carry the entire piece.
Sugar song and Bitter step is definitely one of the most fun piano pieces I have arranged for a while and I just can't get enough of its irresistible rhythmic energy, which always makes you want to dance along.

Been trying to find a piano version but there is only one from many years ago in youtube and sound quality is a bit unclear.

@TinLo Hmmm, let's see, the second Guren no Yumiya doesn't have crazy fast-is-an-understatement ornaments anymore, no melody switch between the RH and LH you can see at the end of the first version either. HOWEVER, the musicality sure has tremendously improved, in fact, after comparing the two arrangements, I couldn't believe in my ears how on Earth is that improvement is possible (truly god-tier). Maybe that's why we find the latter edition much better.
@@nguyenhanh8127 it's definitely not the whole thing, and definitely not even most of his improvement, but a non-negligible reason for improvement is the recording improvement. The recording now sounds sooo much better and the piano sounds so much fuller because of it.

The anime Ed was one of the best in the history of anime Ed and the anime was really gud in my opinion so that is why kekkai sensen/Blood Blockade Battlefront is one of my favorite anime u can even tell by my pfp that is Leonardo Watch with sonic on his shoulder

Yes! This song, "Kawaki wo Ameku", and "Black Rover" are the three I really want to see an arrangement of, since these are some of the best bangers recently released, and I can just imagine how awesome they would sound in an Animenz arrangement (just like with "Gurenge" last week!)! However, I think Animenz arranges based on the shows he is currently watching based on the video description. I hope he sees your comment though! @@woosh_police4018 Not the person you're asking, but I also love kekkai sensen so I also want to say something. To me Kekkai sensen was a really really fun anime. Every character was unique and the world is just amazingly fun to discover as the characters go around about their lives. It's pretty confusing though, since they barely reveal anything about the main character and his motives, but that just made me pay extra attention to everything. Later on, in other seasons if i remember correctly, they reveal more slowly. You should definitely watch it.

This is an especially impressive arrangement to me. Sure, things like Unravel are mechanically ridiculous and blow my mind, but this song has even more moving parts to it, and this is a mostly faithful adaptation on a single instrument. Bravo!
Looking at the music it seems rather simple note wise (most of the time). The speed might catch people off guard though.
This song relies heavily on rhythms. You better be damn good at switching between triplets, quintuplets, sextuplets, sextuplets, and 16th notes (missing the e or & almost every time). As well as playing 2 of those rhythms at the same time on different hands half the piece.

You are jazzing it up again! I love when you try those jazz harmonies and mix it with your style - this arrangement and your vocaloid improvisations (like The World Is Mine!) that are floating around on TH-cam and BiliBili for example. The little details like grace notes, the jazz scales, and the endings are usually exciting and unusual compared to other covers (that stick to the traditional major/minor harmonies and usual pop song progressions). In this arrangement, the final F minor blues down then glissando is just a perfect end. You know you're grooving to your own song a lot when you wag your finger (2:58) lol. Do you do this often?
I can see where you're coming from - not overcomplicating the song since the momentum is already carried by the addictive, "gaming"-style rhythm. I think you made the right choice, and it's the same choice I had when I was arranging AnoHana a long time ago.

Primarily, I haven't watched the anime "Sugar Song and Bitter Step - Kekkai Sensen ED" yet, and I listened to this song for the first time, too. However, I could evidently feel the sweet taste from the heart of Animenz's especially after the sufferance in the front part of his music life. I sincerely like this taste of Animenz's piano music, and also his indeed gratitude inside his mind.

I love how the groovy fun guitar runs are kept in. The whole song just sounds like a conversation between friends, sometimes joyous, sometimes grieving, always together.

Watched kekkai sensen for the first time like three weeks ago. Easily one of my favorite anime. Just so many good feels. It's sad how time moves on from then. I miss Hellsalem's Lot, and especially the characters, but I'm glad to see that others have yet to forget either - and probably never at that.

My favorite parodies are the ones with other anime characters, like a One piece cast doing the dance, because you end up seeing common character types between a lot of shows. Also MAD props for doing this so well! There are parts when this song is asynchronous in terms of rhythm, but you did it PERFECTLY.

Watching this and reading Animenz's comment, I've been what other ending theme songs became a classic meme across fandoms like Sugar Song. Then, I remember that it was Trust Me from Durarara!! season 1. Man, that ending spawned as much (or maybe more than) parodies as Sugar Song did. I dunno if Animenz can see my suggestion, but the whole Fate franchise creates songs that are so bomb. He already fine tuned a couple of those songs: Oath Sign, Brave Shine, Last stardust. I think continuing on with fine tuning songs from that Franchise like “Haru Wa Yuku” makes people like me wholesome.
