    A piece of advice for people living near railroad tracks.
    If your child goes missing ask the police to call the railroad companies that travel those tracks and they will issue a Slow Alert to slow trains down to a crawl for 1 mile in either direction.

    Yesterday, after almost 2 years my 4 year old son was fully diagnosed with Autism. We have known he is, but didn't know where he stood on the spectrum. I have been watching you guys for a while and am so thankful to see that life still goes on. You are an amazing family. So thankful for your vlogs.

    My son, who is on the spectrum, eloped from our house when he was 2 or 3. Somehow he unlocked and got out the back door. So lucky that he was barefoot and walked through a briarpatch in the neighbors yard and plopped down and started crying. When I opened the back door I heard him crying and found him. The panic that sets in is real. He also eloped at his preschool graduation, he got away from a teacher and was found in the front parking lot of the school. Truly terrifying but it happens, doesn't make us worse parents! Glad Abbie didn't get far and got back safely!

    I’m sorry for all the comments but seeing her put away the groceries using what she learns in ABA therapy is SUPER exciting and I’m so happy for you guys. The “is this hot or cold” technique is super awesome. I love how you redirect her and give her visible times for breaks. Even just in the short time I’ve been watching your videos, it’s been very exciting to see how much she has improved. I love that you have the difference between therapy and home and how you carry over the techniques from one to another, but you don’t do it to a point where it’s overwhelming or overbearing. You all celebrate every success and it’s so awesome to see parents that cheer on their kid for everything!! Thank you for sharing your life with us. As a future special education teacher, I’ve learned so much from watching your vlogs.
    PS: FULL MOONS ARE SUCH A THING. I’ve worked in a camp for children with special needs and during a full moon we get all sorts of crazy behavior. #fullmoonautism

      Glacire1990 when I was a teenager I was hospitalized for my medical condition for the first time. The hospital was full and I was placed in a room with a very sweet and quiet elderly woman with dementia. My brother was young so my mom couldn't sleep with me at the hospital that time and since I had a roommate my boyfriend couldnt either. I have always had this fear of being alone in the hospital but I was 16 and was trying to be grown up....until midnight. The quiet woman began screaming, began threatening me, began yelling that the nurses were doing horrible things that I can't write here. I called my mom, in tears because the woman was screaming that she could hear me breathing and cursing me out and my lack of response angered her even more. The nurses couldn't calm her down and I overheard one of the nurses saying " her caretaker says everytime there's a full moon her sundowning gets worse" they later explained to me that people with dementia will often be okay during the day and get very emotional and confused after the sun goes down. I was terrified by the things she said and I couldn't sleep, the hospital staff had to put her in restraints and told me that the hospital floor was full but if I needed a break I could lay down in the ICU waiting room lounge

    This hits home very much. Got a runner myself. Super scary and makes you alert 24/7. Scary part is how schools deal with it. There has to be safety measures for these types of kids. Some schools are not build to protect runners. It adds extra stress to the parents. Abby in the water (beginning of the vlog) is soooo cute that I could laugh and cry at the same time.

      I totally agree with the school issue. My daughter made it all the way out in to the school parking lot from the playground in preschool when she was 3. She slipped in between a 1.5-2 ft gap in between the fence and the woods. A parent that was coming to pick up their child got a hold of her and took her in. I was livid and terrified. They did put up temporary fencing in the spot then built longer permanent fencing. Still wasn't pleased though.

    As soon as my son was able to walk he ran. He is a runner. He has always had the duck and weave down to an art form too. He'd always run towards water, it still terrifies me and he's 13 now. There's something about the water that makes him so happy. Even when he was younger and took baths he'd lay in the tub with the water covering his ears just smiling.

    This is one of the scariest things I've ever been through with my 7yr old boy with autism. He ran from school and was 5yrs old,was pretty much non verbal at the time. The principal called me crying and apologizing that he ran away and they couldn't find him. Thank goodness a cop picked him up right before he ran out into a busy street. Come to find out the reason he ran was because his teacher at the time was always yelling at the kids and if you knew my son it made perfect sense. So glad Abbie is ok😁💙

      @elenagibbons4719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kris Rogers aww so glad they found your kid before he got hurt. Even if I don’t know your kid, it makes sense to me why he might want to run away from the yelling teacher.

    • @BMarie774
      @BMarie774 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kris Rogers I have a friend with an autistic son who when he was about twelve, ran off during recess. He was supposed to have people watching him on the days he went out with the rest of the kids. There was a highway on one side of the school, passed the football field and woods on one side, and a river across the street on the other side. She got a call and immediately had all these horrible mental images of him floating in the river and them having to pull his body from it. He was attracted to water but oddly enough wouldn't swim, and thus didn't actually know how to swim. He LOVED the water but wouldn't go in. My mom worked with her and actually had to drive her to the school because she was in no state to drive. I mean she went through everything from him getting lost in woods and something happening, to him getting hit by a car, to him getting abducted by someone on the highway, to what she was most scared of, him going towards the river and falling in. It is super scary. Thankfully as they came up to the school they saw a group of school staff, two cops, and him standing there as a cop tried to explain why that was a no-no. They ended up finding him INSIDE the school, sitting in the empty art room, drawing comics. He said he'd had to go to the bathroom. And somehow ended up getting side tracked to the bathroom. But it's TERRIFYING. I imagine for parents who already always go to worse case scenario. I would use a GPS in a heartbeat. But hopefully they'll make it so you can have all the function yet in a necklace or bracelet or smaller.

      @elenagibbons4719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brianna Gordy oh dang, I’m really glad he’s okay though. I got scared and I only know about it from the story. And I agree, they should work on more wearable tracking devices (work of the Apple Watch design maybe?)

    • @BMarie774
      @BMarie774 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Elena Gibbons I've literally thought about the Apple Watch myself. I don't see why they couldn't. Maybe put an Apple Watch on a band that can't be taken off easily and do it from that. And yeah he was perfectly okay. He actually honestly didn't even realize what all the fuss was about haha. He was just like "I had to go to the bathroom and then wanted to draw" He didn't really understand why it was an issue. It was definitely scary though while happening.

      Honestly, we have to run after our students a lot during the day. We have asked our administration for help several times , but yet nothing.
      We were told by our school engineer that we were not allowed to have a lock on door. We thought of putting a bookshelf in hopes that it would solve the problem ... but then we just figured it would be too dangerous. Worst part is that there is a staircase right outside our door. So if were not quick enough Im so scared one of the kids will fall down the stairs.

    This is why I love your channel. It’s real life; nothing is off limits. I love how there’s a glimpse into your day, plus a little education about things that happen with a special needs child. Education brings awareness and awareness brings education. I feel like it goes both ways. Thanks for spreading awareness! Love you guys!

    Thank you so much for making these videos. My little one is only 4, and we've been on the ASD journey since she was 2.5, but there's still a ton we haven't had to deal with yet, but I know it'll be coming up. I really appreciate seeing positive people who are a few years ahead of us explaining what they've done, it makes things way less scary.

    Thanks for the ideas for deterring elopement. My husband and I have been thinking about what to do now that our 4 year old (with autism) can get past the baby door knob covers. He hasn't tried while we are sleeping yet, but we don't want to risk anything. Thanks a bunch. Glad Abby was found safe ♡

  • @heidiemmett8364
    @heidiemmett8364 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a special education teacher, and some other things we've used within the classroom to help with prevention of elopement include baby gates on doors (it may at least slow them down for a bit, generally used with younger children) and having their regular "zones" or places they visit set up to be farther away from the door.
    We also use a variety of teaching techniques, which I have seen in your videos. You have taught her basic communication through signs and yes/no as well as asking for a break. These can also help with elopement as they give a little bit more power to the individual with autism (or other disabilities) to communicate what they need versus get frustrated which may lead to elopement.
    I love seeing what you're doing with your family!

    Didn't you use Maverick for when she was younger for eloping? I think that's a really important thing to bring out because a lot of autistic children use a service dog.

      I am a service dog trainer. Tethering a person to a dog can be dangerous for the dog. Abby is now big enough she can drag a dog or hurt a dog. The dog can be trained to alert when someone runs but tethering is not the best idea

    • @kavitadeva
      @kavitadeva 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Heather Harris hi Heather yes I know what you mean I have written a few comments about Maverick and I never hear anything about Maverick. It's almost as if they really don't know what to do with him they say they're going to utilize him more now for meltdowns but then I don't see them doing that in the videos. I do know for a fact because I watched an old video that she used to be Tethered to Maverick and when she would elope Maverick would hold himself still so she couldn't get away. But they say she's too big for that and Maverick doesn't do that so they turned him into a family pet. But then they started seeing recently that when Maverick would get near Abigail during a meltdown she would calm down and want to be near Maverik. So in my thinking as a dog trainer I would help Abigail learn that Maverick is there to help her calm down and use Maverick much much more as her service dog. Thank you for leaving your comment I understand completely how it feels to never get a response on something you feel is important.

    • @kavitadeva
      @kavitadeva 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      sky dawg hi well actually I think that you are a little bit misunderstanding something. They have said recently that they want to use Maverick more as a service dog now for other issues. Mainly meltdowns. They show Abigail and Maverick during a meltdown and Maverick came up to Abigail laid his head on her legs and she started petting him and calmed down. I'm a dog trainer and yes Maverick cannot be used for eloping anymore that's obvious. But he certainly can be used to help mitigate Abby's meltdowns to help calm her to give her a buddy there's so many ways he can be utilized at this time he doesn't need to be just a family pet. And they have commented on that themselves I just don't see them doing the training with Abby and the dog.
