Basically I’ve learned that the only time cure3 is even decent is when there’s a stack marker that shows up reliably enough to even be considered.

A low skill floor is fine, but it feels like the skill cap is also very low. Its hard to set yourself apart when it take minimal effort to play well once you know your rotation etc. Can't set yourself apart much from fighting, can't set yourself apart with gear choices, can't set yourself apart with passive skill point choice(long received), and Materia has become somehow even more basic.
Its a great game for playing with others, but extremely unrewarding for someone trying to do well. Beyond maybe extreme, or ultimate's which is ultimately a very small part of the game.

Whenever I hear someone say 'Old SMN was difficult' I have to question if we played the same job. I would agree if they said '5.0 SMN was difficult' but for most of the expansion past the big 5.1 SMN changes it was just... easy? Like just keep dots up, spam ruin 3, and use bahamut or phoenix when they're up. Maybe the hard part was keeping the 2 minute rotation up but even then that isn't... hard?

    • @Aquilenne
      @Aquilenne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I disagree with the part about it being hard to figure out what you're doing just by reading the skills though, at least at a good enough performance level. Back then I had only just started doing EX level stuff and didn't bother with class guides, even with that limited degree of experience, I was still able to just just went out, read over the skills playing around with them for an hour or two after the rework and ended up getting pretty much all of it except the early leaving Dreadwyrm trance to align with raid buffs, which made it easier to play and turned outto not really be necessary anyway.

    • @kazaookami
      @kazaookami 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

i would always call it "clunky" not "difficult". why? well besides pet AI being unreliable, you were constantly having to decide if you should refresh your dots manually or wait for your next tri disaster reset. if they had just made it so your dots lined up with tri disaster cleanly the class would feel just fine.
I still do prefer the class vision in endwalker, its a clear step into a much more clear identity as an actual summoner.

Boy do I have a story and a lesson to tell...
While leveling my Hunter alt in Shadowlands, I was playing as Survival because I like melee and am a Fury Warrior main. (Mongoose Fury is also fun, it's kinda like a combo, it escalates in power.) I queued for normal Necrotic Wake, the 52 leveling dungeon. Then there was our tank, Mr. ChadThunderCock6969, a Keystone Master blood death knight, who proceded to pull virtually everything past the first boss and complained when the lowbies running casual content didn't optimize and interrupt all those magic bolts that stack negative health absorbs on you. I pointed out that this was just casual leveling content and he's being a dick, then he tried to shit on me for playing the wOrSt dPs ClAsS iN tHe GaMe. I then proceded to do the most damage in the dungeon despite feeling like I could barely manage the rotation.
The tank was a perfect example of toxic elitism and the dunning kreuger effect.
      1. Casual content tends to have more casual players. Sometimes it's people learning new classes or specs, sometimes it's people who just wanna mentally checkout for a bit. Expecting it to operate like your VOIP M+ games is retarded. (In my case: I absolutely didn't interrupt when I actually normally do, but my interrupt weakauras also weren't working on Survival, and I fixed it later.)
      2. Survival is a spec, not a class.
      3. Survival is shit at level 60 when you have: Legendaries, covenant abilities, soulbinds, and conduits all stacked on top of each other inside a raid with ST fights. Not at level 52 in a dungeon.

That’s because in wow the class u play actually matters, the disparity between classes can be so massive in terms of aoe/st dmg/healing/mitigation. But this will only ever apply to high end content as thats where it matters the most. That little or big difference can make or break fights/clears. But since preferences/info from up top trickles down to the lower levels of play, people will always be sheep an follow what is said instead of doing what they want. A lot of content is easily clearable with anything so long as u take the time to learn the class an mess around with it to see what works well an what doesn’t. Wish wow wasn’t this way since a lot of the “underpeformers” can really pop off an makes it exciting to see that.

For the TL;DR read the bottom of the post.
You still have to learn how to play your character/class. Just because you've learned the patterns or learned multiple jobs doesn't make them easy. You've just gotten used to them. Of course it would seem "easy" to you, but what about the player who's never played the game before or even bothered to learn other characters/classes?
Saying difficulty is based on the individual is a misleading statement. Some people are compatible towards certain things, but like said above, it doesn't make it easier or more difficult. You just understand it better or it harmonizes with your playstyle/personality. Some people excel at Math because they just understand numbers better and some people become actors because of their personalities. That doesn't make Math or acting any less/more difficult.
We have two questions here; "Do you want to play something or do you want to beat something?" Difficulty would be defined by how demanding an individual finds something IF we are talking about the former question. Difficulty, to me, can be quantified by the amount of "how many tasks needed to complete something" and "window of error/how many mistakes you are allotted before failure" variables there are. Not by how well YOU are able to complete the task IF we're talking about the latter question. Anybody can press keys on a piano and "play" the piano, but some can actually play a song on the piano that's a little bit more complex than hot cross buns. The more difficult songs have more notes to play, more note-timing, and more demanding finger coverage which means more notes to miss or mistime.
TL;DR: "Familiarity/routine does not equal easy and compatibility does not equal more or less difficulty" and "Playing something is easy. Beating something is another subject."

This isn't really a fair take though. And before I get into this, let me clarify that I am not a SMN main. I didn't even like SMN in ShB, nor do I like it in EnW. However, "Just level a different job lol" is an extremely nonsensical thing to say. Sure, you don't have to make an alt for it, but chances are, if you had SMN at level 80, you already knew this, and yet people are still complaining about it. Why?
Because they completely and utterly changed how the job works. This is never actually a good idea. Making a job more accessible *can* be a good idea but only if you don't alienate the people who originally liked the job in the process. What if someone doesn't find the other jobs as enjoyable? What if they already leveled all the other jobs, but still mained old SMN because they simply liked it the best, and now the class they enjoyed most is basically just replaced by a whole new class? After all, "level another job lol" only works if the person only played SMN simply because it was the only DPS job they had leveled, which, it's exceedingly rare to find a player who isn't new yet has only leveled a single job.
It's like going to a restaurant and ordering your favorite meal, but when you receive your order, it's actually a completely different meal. It's still vaguely the same meal you usually order, but the taste isn't the same and it has a completely different texture. When you understandably end up displeased with the fact that the meal you usually order has effectively been replaced completely by this meal you find less satisfying, another customer leans over, laughs at you, and tells you "just order something else", as if your preference for what you usually order was the product of ignoring the other options available, rather than the fact that you enjoyed it the most, and somehow the solution to having what you prefer being replaced by something that is different is to instead choose something else that is also completely different.

I agree, but also disagree. I do think people take it to an unnecessary extreme and seem to believe that all nerfs are inherently bad, but at the same time, it's understandable that people feel that way about them. Nobody wants to feel like they're getting *less* out of the same thing they were doing before. It's just not satisfying to the player. On the other hand, with buffs, people find it satisfying to do the exact same things they were doing before and yet get more out of it than they did before. It's why leveling systems work. People enjoy the feeling of becoming stronger, but nobody really likes getting weaker.

Another friend of mine is a Dancer main, and refuses to swap off of Dancer to play Bard, despite begging, pleading, and flaming from her static. She mained Dancer in 11, she's going to main Dancer in 14.
Play the class you fucking enjoy. If you are good at the class, then you can clear anything in the goddamn game, bar none. By the time we killed p4s, we still had another 7 seconds before the enrage finished, and this was with safety gaming mechanics that we could honestly have safely greeded. That 7 seconds was more than enough to make up the difference between Bard and Dancer. It's not hard.

I started Samurai in EW (leveled through 3 expansions since I was a trial before.) I've heard people complain about pre-EW version, but never really understood it; the closest I got, was leveling. Having 1 Tsubami felt boring, and Namikiri feels meaty and I love using it.
It was my first actual DPS character, so positionals and combos were a bit to get used to, but after playing it enough I only mess up when a super important mechanic is happening or coming up. I've said this in other videos, but I think difficulty is what you're playing + what you're playing against; it's the standard for PvP games, so why not PvE? Anyone can headshot a moving target dummy in Apex or Overwatch, but what about when that dummy starts trying to kill you?
You have limited time, need to position yourself properly multiple times, and THEN you need to perform your role/job at a sufficient level. While watching pro players in shooters, the main thing I took from it: consistency. Top raiders are also like this. Doing EVERYTHING right *consistently* is where the difficulty lies.
This is all just talk, though...I play at a satisfactory level, but by no means think I'm near the top. I don't parse, but if I'm not missing a beat in my rotation that's all I need to know.
Now..lining up burst windows with friendly buffs/debuffs is something I haven't done much. Having a static likely helps with that.
ANYWAYS this post is way too long.

It absolutely blows my mind what the FFXIV community complains about when it comes to class balance. I would kill for the level of class balance this game has to be the MMO standard. I've been playing WoW since actual classic as a kid, and you have specs if not entire classes literally left to die for an entire expansion doing literally half the DPS or healing as another spec/class. The FFXIV community has it so good when it comes to *actually* getting to play whatever you want.
People seem to forget that that's not at all how it works in other games and that if you don't bring the meta, the possibility of you getting a clear on the hardest content actually becomes questionable. For example, on TBCC, the fact that a raid brought 5 warriors and 2 rogues to their 25 man raid was fucking worthy of a news article on wowhead (premier modern wow news source), celebrating the fact that they could bring that many melee to a raid!
Whenever I see people bitching about a 1-2% damage gap in between classes, I seriously want to break ToS on FFXIV and call them a stupid baby that needs to get over themselves and that they're playing the actual most well-balanced game on the entire fucking market. By far. Go look up what the class balance in guild wars 2 is like and be blessed you don't have to deal with bad game design and learn to thank the game devs instead of bitching about getting an extra 10-20 potency on a few attacks a few weeks faster. On the contrary, they weren't the top parsing classes but were doing just fine and in guild/friend groups could easily push high mythic keys and do mythic raids just fine. @@Kakyoin489 tbh with current number of specs in wow, that's 36 classes to balance per tier compared to FF14s 19. Plus FF14 has no talents, gear bonuses, legendary effects and other nuances. WoW would have to literally go back to old school philosophy and remove the whole idea of "each spec should feel different and like its own class" that started with legion patch in WoD and rather make class be its own thing with some deviations in talent choices. Say, why does mage need 3 specs? Its hard to balance. Rather, make it 1-2 specs tops (like DH) and allow talents to be flavor of fire/frost/arcane with some small and subtle rotation deviation. If they'd shrink it down significantly, even tier sets would make more sense and it would be easier to balance it all. There was interview somewhere with wow dev addressing this bloat and that it was a bad game design decision. Tbh, I think community would understand if they made drastic changes like these to keep the game balanced as opposed to every expansion flavor of the month bs meta.

Also regardless of their motivation, the buffs > nerfs approach is awesome. It's awesome when it's the approach in stuff like fighting games and even moreso in pve games because realistically, everyone wins since the competitive aspect in pve games is usually just some weird shit on the side that some players feel is necessary to stroke their ego. As you said in the video, if you want to be a slave to the meta just do that and get the small extra dps that you get from doing that, but if you want to play the job that you like, just play the job that you like.

I chose DPS to start with because I thought it would be the easiest thing to do. I chose Bard because I figured I'd be kind of mediocre at it, so I figured if I was able to use buffs and support people that would make up for my DPS deficiencies. Turns out, I picked a job that is not hard but keeps very very busy. Turns out I was both right and wrong. Being a DPS was more involved than I thought it would be when I realized I had a responsibility to do mechanics right and not give the healer an aneurism. I realized "If I can keep track of buttons, I can keep track of people's HP" So I became a healer. I liked it. So I became a tank because I apparently hate myself. Now I like tanking. Still like my Bard.
Bard has been through several changes. Last expansion we lost TP which is good. But we also gained a little brother named Dancer who is hella fun to play and took all my buffs. I hate him, but I love him also so I'm ok that his personal DPS is shit because he's so precious I can't stay mad at him and those sweet buffs.
    I still miss Foe's requiem.
Now Bard doesn't have to rely on DOTs, which is cool. Our songs last longer, which is cool. And we can more effectively buff ourselves and the party, which is cool. We even managed to out damage Machinist which... wtf happened to you my dude? I am so sorry.

SMN main since ARR, SMN wasn't hard, but it was more engaging before. I was also a sweaty orange parser though. The APM before was about 41, now its like 36? I think but the current APM is a bit padded with garuda's low gcd and the mountain busters you get at 86 adding in 4 presses per minute. Stormblood summoner was a great time, since it actually involved thought and gave you options for ways to hold your burst for burst windows. ShB dropped that since you'll just drift too hard if you tried, and now there's no reason to try to hold anything since the trances will reset your gems and bahamut and phoenix do more than the primals anyway. I don't need SMN to be the big dick it was for a while in ShB again, but I would like it to be more engaging. Nothing else really scratches that itch for me and never has. I still only play SMN, its just not as fun now.

For someone who doesn't play SMN only level it up and then forget everything about it afterwards. I also don't like the NEW SMN. For most of the content it just summon, spam ruin(gemshine sure but before it becomes Rite, it's called Ruin still), summon spam ruin, summon spam ruin. Also I see no reason to use any of the summons beside just to keep doing damage while waiting for Baha/Nix. Baha/Nix is needed to do Elementals but Elementals isn't needed for Baha/Nix. The one skill that gives you something else to do is so late(favors), and the Big Bads are endgame, should have put it at least at 82(81 would been best though).

      @marcog.verbruggen674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

i'm a fairly new player and a SMN main. Started a month before EW dropped, so got to experience old SMN up to lvl60.
      "Engaging" is the exact word.
I didn't think SMN was particularly hard before: I too avoid every gaming community on this blue earth as much as I can, and I only started making friends in the game after EW, so my entire experience with old SMN was "pure" and without influence from existing players' knowledge, but i still figured out weaving and maintaining uptime, and all that stuff that i didn't even know had names for it, just by feeling out the class and the game (when i eventually decided to look up some guides and stuff to see what i was doing right or wrong, i discovered to my pleasant, ego-boosting surprise, that i intuitively figured out the ideal SMN rotation for my level minus a few quirks here and there). All this to say, I didn't think SMN was very difficult. If you payed a little attention and focused on maximizing dps, it was, i feel, very easy to figure out what to do, and then do it.
The difference is that before, i was always doing something. Always pressing different buttons. Sure, there'd be little bursts of just spamming ruin for filler, but most of the time there was always something to do - use my pet abilities at the right time, refresh DoTs, throw in energy drain and fester, etc etc. At level 60 I had two full hotbars (well I used 3 for hotkey convenience, but they had blank spaced in them), while my other classes could pretty much fit everything into one if i really wanted them to. hell, BLM almost felt like it had 3 buttons. Now it's the opposite, with SMN feeling like it has half the buttons BLM does, and being able to fit all of them in 1 hotbar if i wanted.
New SMN is just... more boring. I still enjoy it, but it feels sooo much more.. spammy. Summon Bahamut/Phoenix, Spam ruin, summon ifrit, spam ruin, summon titan, spam ruin, summon garuda, spam ruin, back to start. With no more DoTs, and fester no longer doing damage based on those DoTs, there's no longer any timing-related reason to hold onto your aetherflow charges, and since you have SO much instant cast now, there's no need to use fester for casting while moving in a pinch either. I used to enjoy SMN because it was engaging and kept me focused and active during fights, now I enjoy SMN because i get to look at all the different god souls i enslaved go out and fight for me in a parade. It's cool but it doesn't feel like the job I started my journey with anymore. RDM is filling that hole of engagement for me rn, but it's just not the same.
Granted I'm still far from max level and have many abilities yet to unlock. But from what i can tell it's still not gonna bring that same engagement back.

yeah I feel like SMN now has a really good base to stand on compared to the mess it was before, just need more OGCDs and decisionmaking. its funny how they added so much decision making to a lot of classes, but ended up making SMN the most mechanical class probably in the entire game, maybe only behind MCH. but I'm very curious to see how they will improve SMN in the future, because right now it plays like an amazing class would play at maybe lvl 60.

So I had to pick a melee DPS to get my 5th role job covered. Spent awhile looking at all the options... but you know what didn't come into my calculations? What one has an arbitrary best DPS. If I had I'd have jumped aboard the reaper train with everyone else, especially as its seen that they aren't willing to nerf it.
But do you know what is more important to me than that? Things like... how the job plays... how the job restricted gear looks... how the attack animations look... how it fits into the story. These are way more important to me than some number that no one but omega tryhards really care about.
I picked Ninja, by the way. Also Chair's guide on Ninja has made it so I can't unsee when other ninjas spam aoe mudras against single targets. I want to tell them to spam raijin instead and use trick attack on cooldown... but then I would be that guy.

Very well said. People using the ceiling of something for its overall difficulty is definitely a constant bugbear of videogame discourse (esp in something like fighting games, where people seem to drastically overestimate how much of the mindboggling tech possible you actually need in practice at a beginner level. MOBAs like League of Legends are objectively the some of the most annoyingly obtuse games on the market but that sure didnt stop LoL from being the literal most played game in the world, at least half of whom probably suck at it but dont care)
On a similar note re: the SAM thing, on the one hand it does make sense that intuitively Samurai, the class that does nothing but hit a motherfucker hard, should be outnumbering the melee classes that also bring potentially powerful defensive utility to the table like Monk (which as a Monk main, we should probably not be on top) or Reaper (which even had to be nerfed there lol), like that just kinda makes sense from a group composition design standpoint. On the other hand, like you point out, just using rDPS metrics doesnt really take into account that getting those juicy raid damage parses requires much more co-ordination and optimization from the team, the kind you really can't rely on during prog or god forbid PF, and the fact classes like Samurai or even White Mage on healers don't need that shit is a very slept on trait.
Which is kinda an important thing about DPS; people seem to have this weird mentality that doing higher damage than necessary is purely a cock-extension speedrunning/parse metric that has no practical benefit in situations outside of illegal funny colours, when this is demonstrably not true in key areas like being at least 80-90% of why old content gets trivialized to save time or the fact that raid kills like the very one you point to for BLM came down to basically a couple of server ticks before enrage (which is also the main reason for other classes coming up IMO, which is that the devs may have a damage range in mind that the non-Reaper/reworked!Monk dps isnt hitting in this new math, given those are the new kids on the block). Yeah, the obvious answer to DPS checks, esp in something like the chaos of party finder, is simply to play better and hope damage RNG is also nicer to you, and those are both absolutely correct, and outweigh the vast majority of class output differences in this game in almost all situations, but as anyone who's hit a 1 or 0.5% enrage can tell you, there's a very distinctly non-zero amount of cases where small, seemingly insignificant margins absolutely add up to change outcomes even if only in the short term, which can absolutely be the difference between being done and needing another grueling hour of attempts (I may be projecting some bad PF runs) Which is the *real* reason why all those world first groups care so much about class/dps meta and stuff; a few seconds off a boss kill doesn't matter in a vacuum but when its the last % of health during an enrage cast that could be you finally being done with prog...

As a ninja main, I would like to thank you on your piece about Raiju. Even in it’s previous iteration, I thought people where just being stupid about how bad Raiju combo was. Yeah it was bad, but it had its work arounds. After the fix I was like wow, this is amazing, I can’t think of a single reason why anybody would think this is bad. But apparently I was wrong.

Yeah, unfortunately this is very true. Not enough attention is brought to improvement in my opinion and I don't think that will change. I feel like it hurts content sometimes too, a good example being the current savage tier. The first 3 fights are no harder than the extremes, with p2s actually being easier than the extremes and I can't think of a reason for this other than the fights are being intentionally made more and more accessible to people who have no interest in improving their gameplay.

That was surface level take on why the raijus are bad. The reason raijus are at least very annoying because it killed flexibility in your trick windows. Because its your highest potency melee gcd your goal should be to get as many in trick windows as you can. For instance in e12s the shiva trick window had you rearrange your normal trick window so that it ends with TCJ but now you can't do that because if you did the raiju you get from tcj will never be in the trick window anymore for the rest of the fight. So either you would have to delay a trick, which has its own potential consequences, or every 2 minute window after is just weaker now because raiju restricted the flexibility of gcds in your trick window. This goes for also applies to any trick windows where it is safe to be next to the boss for the first part of it and not safe near the end of the window. You can't end trick windows with raitons because you wont get any raijus inside trick.
They did make one of them not a dash, so ninja don't get fucked by roots anymore like in zodiark extreme so that's a good change at least.

As much as I agree with your points if you were a week one player this tier and you ran a paladin warrior dancer summoner comp the DPS check on the p4s door boss was actually absurd you had to have lucky crits to even clear it with people hardcore optimizing the fight. I had more than a few runs that were 100 to 50 DPS off and after analyzing the logs for hours and hours we came to the conclusion that we just had to ban under performing classes and we ended up having enough damage that we didn't even need DPS llb3(700 dps). Of course we could have just kept running the classes that we wanted to play and we would have cleared it eventually but this is the first time since I started playing final fantasy that comp felt like it mattered at least for week one.

  • @TheWrxrally

Agree 100%. You know, it's funny. I used to be a MNK main. I picked up MCH about half way through Shadowbringers, and I fell in love with the coolness factor and the way that the rotation flows so well that you can really spend time focusing on mechanics. Up until the newest patch, I still very much enjoyed playing MNK, but after 6.0 I kinda hate it. Now, I'm not saying the design is bad, but I would have to put so much more effort into MNK to hit the same DPS numbers that I hit on my MCH, and I'd probably be having less fun too.
People like to shit on MCH for having low Damage relative to melee classes and no good party buffs. They like to say it's not viable in high end content. If that's the case, why am I CONSISTENTLY top dps in my raid groups? Could it be that I get consistent uptime during mechanics? Could it be that the rotation is so incredibly smooth that I can do it in my sleep? Could it be that maybe I'm just paying more attention and putting in the effort to git gud?
And that's the thing, right? Here's the secret to "viability": Nothing is viable if you suck; everything is viable if you're good.

As a former summoner main, I agree that ShB summoner was a pretty simple job, which could be summed up with "manage your dots, CDs, demis, and jank". But just because you don't like managing jank doesn't mean that every job in the game has to be jankless, besides that they removed dots and their interaction with your CDs, summoner is literally just demis and CDs now. Current summoner is way too straight forward for me, and well I enjoy playing it, I miss old summoner more then I enjoy new summoner

honestly same, if they had kept old smn and made the pets more responsive and had demi bahamut and phoenix not follow you around everywhere that would be all I'd ever ask for. It wasn't the difficulty that had me missing it but the engagement. I feel completely braindead when playing current smn, not having to worry about anything, I rarely even feel like a caster anymore. So when I first looked at Reaper I saw the 3 button combo with no positionals and 50% higher potency than Dragoon I said to myself "hang on there's something not right here, how is this fair?" Then I engaged my three brain cells for roughly 2 picoseconds because thats how long it takes to realise that DRG has 2 seperate 5 button combos all the time compared to RPR having to fill its -heat and battery- soul and shroud gauges to get those extra buttons. If even someone like me can figure out how to account for job differences why is it an issue in the first place?

Hot take, nothing in ffxiv is "hard"
Savage raiding, ultimate raiding, any queued content actually. The difficulty is just in making 7 other friends that can also no life with you and you all like each other. It's basically just a rhythm game after that.
Even world first guys and top 1%ers just have friends they spend more time doing that with.
The only thing in this game that makes something more "difficult" is the time it takes to do it. Everything is more of a test of patience rather than sheer skill.
Completing all of eureka/ bozja or getting all Triple Triad cards is "hard" because it takes forever to do.
Completing relic grinds is hard because it takes forever.
Clearing savage is hard because there are a lot of mechanics to remember, which means it takes more time to remember, which makes it harder.
Even solo POTD or HOH is just how much time you are willing to put into it. If you have a clear on it you just spent more time and tested your patience better than people who don't.
Don't get me wrong this is my favorite game ever and I have 419 days clocked on, but the game was made for babies playing advanced Simon or Bop-it.
If you want to play a hard game that people respect you for being good at, go play Chess.
