  • Melinda Saxe's stage magic and illusion performance from 1988 on the Smothers Brothers television show taped in Los Angeles. This clip contains vintage video footage of Melinda's earlier work, at the beginning of her magic career.
Melinda headlined in her own magic show at the Lady Luck Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. She was billed as "The First Lady of Magic" for the various shows she presented in a succession of Las Vegas venues throughout her career. Her first starring show was a small cabaret theatre at the Bourbon Street Hotel in the late 1980's. At the height of her fame she starred in big shows with large supporting casts at some of the city's best known locations.
Melinda got her start as a dancer for Siegfried & Roy's magic show at the Frontier Hotel in 1982 and comes from a show business family. In 1998 the International Magicians Society named her "Magician of the Year" in its "Merlin" awards.
Melinda's show at the Lady Luck was produced by Gary Ouellet. Gary Ouellet was also the producer of the World's Greatest Magic television specials broadcast on the NBC network and cast Melinda in both the first & second season. Melinda's 2nd appearance included the debut of the Drill of Death illusion, in which Saxe was chained up in front of a giant drill which appeared to advance and impale her before lifting her up and spinning her limp body high above the stage.
Ouellet was again influential in promoting Saxe's career when she starred in her own special for Disney in 1997.

So great to see this, Jim Stafford, Melinda...always loved the draped floating woman effect, I wasn't sure if it was ok to see a woman in a thong when this came out...but I'm ok with it now. Dicky Smothers and the Smothers Brothers were the best.

Somebody please find this instrumental song if it has an origin. I wonder if song cuts off early

Nice Asrah. She had an interesting career. I'm particularly grateful, Connie, for your "footnotes". The "Drill of Death" was a truly spectacular illusion - which I've seen other magicians do but never as well as Melinda. They always seemed to me to be using the exact same drill. Was there only ever one built, do you know?

ciao Glyn, I believe it was the cost of the drill illusion that was the issue. It was VERY, very expensive & Melinda performed it at the time Gary Ouellet was producing and managing her show and career with financial backers and network connections. It always reminded me of Siegfried & Roy's impaled on the dragon's nose. Both illusions were technically complicated to perform and very expensive pieces of illusion equipment.

@@MagicalWomenwithConnieBoyd Of course - it always comes down to money. I never saw the Siegfried & Roy dragon one. I guessed that it was a most devilish matter of timing to execute properly. Also not something you want to pack in a trunk and leave in Italy, either!
