- Iconic Female Magician Gloria Dea Magic Legend Tribute. 100 year old Gloria Dea passed peacefully in Las Vegas on March 18, 2023.
Gloria was the FIRST magician to perform in Las Vegas at the El Rancho Hotel & Casino in May 1941. She received a Special Fellowship Award from the @AcademyofMagicalArts \& the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California on September 22nd, 2022. The award was presented to Gloria Dea virtually by Gay Blackstone. Connie Boyd presented the Award to Gloria in Las Vegas two days later.

Gloria Dea was a magic child prodigy STAR, who was taught by her father Leo Metzner. Gloria's entertainment career spanned decades and beyond magic. After her appearance in Las Vegas she became a Hollywood Star in diverse roles including magic performances. Her vintage Hollywood actress, acting credits include co-starring with Buster Crabbe in King of the Congo pre-film serial series and appearing in "the Prodical." In 1931 she starred as a magician in a "soundie" called "Concertina Man".
Thanks to the research & discoveries made by Lance Rich and Anna Rose Einarsen, @TheDavidCopperfield1 that @MagicalWomenwithConnieBoyd have discovered GLORIA DEA. It's a true story of newfound, magical friendship that reads like a fictional romance & fantasy.

This is an emotional and inspiring tribute to a true legend!! I was delighted to know that she once worked in car sales selling chevrolets!! My dad worked for chevrolet in the design department and i worked at a car dealership until i retired 6 years ago.Gloria Dea will remain in our pleasant memories forever!! Gary in dreamland. Hello, Connie! Frankly, I had never heard of Gloria until the Genii article. I guess a lot of us hadn't, so I'm not completely embarrassed by that fact. I am greatly looking forward to reading the book as soon as it arrives, but since I don't have Lance's address, I'll hope that YOU can assist me with a question, Connie. I had always thought that my late friends, Jack and Mary Kodell, were the first magicians in Vegas. In all the time I knew them, they always claimed that honor and seemed very sincere in the claim. Mary had been a big star in British Music Hall before working with Jack. As I am extremely interested in Vaudeville and Music Hall, we had many great conversations about those times. When I was a whole lot younger, I was able to work with several stars of both types of entertainment. I was the 20 year-old kid constantly asking questions of the likes of much older folks Milton Berle, Georgie Jessel, Tessie O'Shea and others. At some point, Mary and Jack were doing and act with parakeets while SKATING. Magic is tough enough standing and walking onstage without being in constant motion. I'm not sure that they did that act in Vegas, Connie; it may have been back in Mary's homeland. Do you know of any reason for them to make that claim? At NO point did they appear the least bit insincere. They were wonderful people! I hope you see this, Connie, and can shed some light on it. Thanks!!
ciao I am sorry I don't know your name. You are correct to be confused. The revelation of Gloria Dea being the first magician to perform on the Las Vegas Strip was the scoop of the decade. It was revealed at the Las Vegas Magic Expo in Las Vegas in August 2021 by Lance Rich. Serendipitously Anna Rose discovered Gloria Dea at the same time. Now here is where this gets even more interesting earlier that same year in May 2021, Mary Kodell accepted an award from the Las Vegas Magic Events group on their 6th anniversary from David Copperfield and Scott Hitchcock stating they were the 1st in LV.

I believe Jack & Mary believed that they were the first, it was only through Lance's research it became clear that Gloria Dea was the first. Gloria didn't know she was #1, to her it was another magic contract.
I have great respect for Mary and I had the honor of meeting Jack when I worked in Las Vegas at the Tropicana Hotel many years ago. He & Mary came to see my performance there.
I hope that this clarifies a confusing story.

It's getting late for an old guy like me, but I will certainly be looking at both tomorrow morning. That's great news about Mary's award! She was a real treasure. Both she and my wife were Brits, so they always talked each other's ears off. And she always had advice about EVERYTHING! She had no "pause" button. We left the Orlando area 13 years ago, but as a very recent widower, I'll be heading back that way. There are still several friends who I left behind there, and new ones I haven't met yet.
