    I once bought my first Apple Watch just for fitness aspects. But like a year ago I started using it on a daily basis for my everyday life and I’m not wearing any other watch at the moment.
    What I personally like the most from the Apple Watch is the versatility. I am a runner, yes, but I also do other workouts and I am a gym class instructor. So my watch needs to fit into these multipurposes. And I have to say:
    For me it’s the best running device. Just because of one reason: I can leave my phone at home and don’t have to worry about music or emergencies etc. I simply connect my AirPods to my watch and boom I have my whole music library on my wrist whilst I’m running through the woods. Fantastic
    BUT I have to say I am not so into all the small little details you named. So for me the data that the Nike running club/the native fitness app collects is enough :) hope this info might help someone who is reading this and isn’t sure if you should buy the  watch.

      Do you find that the apple watch itself and the strap could get dirty from sweat, debris, dirt if you workout/run with it on your wrist daily?

    • @Jan-kf5ej
      @Jan-kf5ej 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Rebecca Chen, the Watch no. Even if: you can clean it under water. No problem :) the band you can easily clean with just water and bar soap. But you can easily get multiple watchbands from Amazon/Ali express for really cheap. Yes, it’s not the Apple Original, what means it’s not the same quality. But it’s cheap and easily exchangeable. And not a single watch band I have is dirty or got ever broken. :) I hope this info might help you

    I got both Apple Watch SE and Garmin Fenix 6s and this is my opinion: if you want the watch to prepare a given running target or a competition you need the Garmin. However, if you need a watch to track your running without too much detail, for instance, keep your shape, fat loose or track your daily calories and so on the Apple Watch is better because it does that plus much more tasks throughout your day as an excellent smarthwatch. It depends how focus our are into running like doing speed series, hills running, etc. With Garmin you can create those workouts. With apple you cannot. I ended up using the Apple Watch cuz I do many more things and battery last my two days. If would need to run and prepare a race I would grab the Garmin cuz it tells you all data and feedback you need to get your running goal.

    • @ChaseTheSummit

      I completely agree. Garmin is better suited as a dedicated sports watch. The Apple Watch can track sports but also is great for daily life. Thanks for watching!

    I am a new runner and am being gifted the Apple watch SE for Christmas. If I was buying something for myself it would not have been my first choice, I would have gone down the Garmin route, so I have found your reviews really interesting. • @Jose-ud9gr
    @Jose-ud9gr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Every Apple Watch user who's seriously into outdoor activities NEEDS to download the WorkOutDoors app, it just turns the watch into a Garming killer. Plus, if you get the cellular version it's just liberating, you've got your entire Music/podcast/audiobooks library, you're reachable and you can even upload your workouts to Strava right from this app. The only departments Garming and others are ahead are buttons (if you prefer that over touch screens) and battery life, but I still haven't had my watch die on me during workouts, my Series 4 (20 months old) still lasts all day on a single charge. I expect the Series 6/SE to be even better with these new chips which are supposed to be more efficient.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Workoutdoors is pretty awesome! There are still reasons why it's still not a "Garmin Killer" in my opinion though. You can't pair external sensors like power meters, or heart rate straps to that app. Also, the battery life is still a bottle neck for super long activities. For casual training though the WorkOutdoors app is great and I really dig the full color touch map! Thanks for watching!

      AW5 Battery almost lasts me 2 days, but I put it on the charger every morning while having breakfast & showering. Thats enough & works for me. Use Sleep++ app.
      I have had Fenix 3, & 3HR. Both had bugs. Too wary then to buy F5 or F6.
      Had an AW3 & now a AW5. No bugs. just work. I use it with a bluetooth chest strap when training.
      Recently got a cheap Garmin vivoactive 3 music to see if I liked it. It's ok,
      but after reading the above messages I've just bought the workoutdoors app for my AW5.
      No time yet to play with it, but if it's good, I'll flip the Garmin.
      Great video, and many interesting comments, tips. Thanks everyone.

    WorkOutDoors has literally been the app that convinced me to use my AW 4 Stainless Steel for everything now, instead of my old Fenix 6. The developer is actually super cool too, and he's open to letting nerds like us beta test for him!
    Amazing smartwatch, does everything I need it to. Yes, it's not all contained in one main place, and you need to install separate apps and then use HealthFit or RunGap to get your data to a good place (I still use Garmin Connect and just sync over everything using RunGap, which also syncs to Strava), but it's so feature-rich for a price that is cheaper than the F6. Good video, Dave, keep it up.

But the best part is if you’re trying to wake up for work or something and you have an alarm set on your phone. If you’re wearing your watch it will vibrate so you will wake up instantly

    Thank you dude. I left Fenix 5 behind and moved to Apple Watch SE. I´m runner first. I´m not really missing all the information collected by the garmin, as I don´t care about ground contact time, vertical oscillation, ... at the end of the day these information is not going to change what I´m doing, just running. Still I´m finding very interesting having connection to the network without carrying my phone. THis is specially interesting to me as I´m also windsurfer, so being able to call for emergency from the water is a great feature. Great in depth review. The Apple Watch might record sleep data if it is not being recharged. Heard that the version 7 can be charged more quickly than the SE allowing to record sleep data if you recharge it before going to bed. 80% in 10mn. Sleep data helps to calculate training load and evaluate if you need to rest and might be overreaching. I prefer to have a good multipurpose App than having to load a bunch to achieve the same and having to deal with exchanging data via Apple health. For that reason I’ll stick to dedicated sport watches like Garmin or Polar that have greater battery life and provide excellent metrics and tracking abilities straight out of the box. Keep up the good reviews

    Hi Chase the summit! Thanks for the video!
    When I bought my first SmartWatch (my current series 5) I did it looking for fitness insight. However, after nearly a year of use it leaves me with a disappointing feeling, because when it comes to sports it doesn’t give you enough information, stats.... it so basic. It is true that it gives me more in terms of smartwatch stuff but for me that is not necessary. As long as it tells me when someone calls me or text me.... for the rest I always end up taking the phone which I always have with me.
    I think Garmin will give me so much information for all my runs, rides, hikes, skiing days, sleep, fitness status... and I won’t have to worry about battery!!! Having to charge the Apple Watch everyday it is so annoying, not to mention the impossibility to go for a long day into the mountains without failing to record your entire hike or being worry about it!

I did some research and the ones I most identify with are AW 6 / SE and Garmin Venu/Sq. I don't run exclusively, I also do yoga and functional training. Thank you for taking the time to create this video. I've been a Garmin wearer for years and have just purchased an Apple SE (my wife actually got it for me). I was going to do exactly what you did - wear both and compare data - and you doing so saved me the time in crunching the numbers. What you say here makes sense to me knowing the Garmin and it looks like I'll be holding onto my 235 for my running.

    I have an Apple Watch series 3 ( had some loyalty program points to use so just paid for shipping), and I more or less use it as an activity tracker . Whilst it is fairly accurate. It has one massive Achilles heel, pretty much the same one subsequent versions have, battery life, at current activity levels I get approximately 2 days use ( I don't sleep with it on). For running outdoors I prefer to use my Sunto Ambit 2 although I have had to jerry rig the Watch bands because of them breaking over time ( Ambit 2 has great battery life). If I can swing the cash I would replace applewatch and theambit with a Garmin Instinct Solar or Fenix 6 pro.

    Very good review, thanks for sharing!! I noticed when you were showing the HR data that it looks like the apple watch takes fewer data points than your garmin watches. Looks like it might not be a great tool for doing intervals or something with fast changing data based on the seemingly fewer data points. As a long time Suunto GPS tester, I have a few tips for you for future reviews:
    1) Try not to do out and back routes. It is very hard to see how accurate the GPS tracks are compared to your actual path when you are looking at 2 sets of tracks stacked on each other (from an out and back)
    2) Try to incorporate routes that have a decent number of sharp turns or curves, so you can see how it tracks in comparison to easy straight line and "gentle curve" running
    3) When comparing GPS devices, wear as many as you can on the same arm. All GPS devices have some sort of sideways offset, so wearing the watches on different arms is a less accurate method of comparing; especially when comparing overall total distance and GPS track accuracy. I can wear up to 3 watches on one arm by doing the following: wear one watch on my wrist, wear another on my forearm, and a 3rd wrapped around my hand. Also make sure that the watches are spaced by about 1-2" so the GPS antenna don't interfere with each other -- a buff or wristband
    Hopefully a few of these tips might be useful, I have learned many different things to watch out for in 5 years of GPS device testing. Keep up the great vids, and happy trail running!

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I actually prefer out and back tracks for analyzing data as it gives you a better idea of how the GPS is tracking on a single device since map data won't be 100% perfect. Theoretically the tracks should be right on top of each other if you're on the same side of the road/trail. Thanks for watching!

    Interesting review, thanks. I've just come to the conclusion that after changing from Garmin to Polar Ignite for better HRM (much better), the GPS from my iPhone 11 Pro is way ahead of either. Tracking is perfect on the phone, both Garmin and Polar go off by significant amounts. You weren't clear on whether your phone was off when testing the AW or whether it was using the phone GPS (sorry if I missed it and you did say)? I'm now keeping phone in pocket and using Strava though still have Polar for HRM. The lack of accuracy on GPS from Polar put me 200m out on distance the other day on 5k - that's a full minute. Checked the phone, it was perfect, checked the map, the phone distance was perfect. Interesting tech around at the moment! Thanks.

    Hey, I found that the garmin vivoactive was not quite precise in term of milage. I was thinking about changing to apple watch because I use apple in all other devices. Is the forerunner better in terms of precision and batterie than the vivoactive ? Thanks great video!

      The newer Forerunner 255 is a pretty big step up in terms of GPS accuracy as compared to Venu/Vivoactive.

    Interesting. I'm finding the display on my Forerunner 245 increasingly hard to read. A larger screen and better contrast would help I think. I may look into the Apple watches.

      The retina display on the Apple Watch is certainly vibrant and easy to read especially using an app like iSmoothRun or WorkOutDoors! The "not always on" display takes some adjusting though. I like that the 245 never turns off or dims. Thanks for watching.

    I do a lot of run/walk on my recovery runs to keep my HR low. Apple watch doesn't provide intervals customization. Also not a fan of touch screen for my running watches.

      Agree on the touch screen. I much prefer buttons especially in the rain!

    Very nice review Dave. I don't have an AW (yet). But, can you use Polar Beats on the AW just using the built in OHR? Or, can you only connect to Beats with A Polar HR strap?

      I just tried it and it seems like you can't use the OHR in Polar Beat which is kind of odd. Maybe Polar doesn't trust the data coming from the Apple Watch. That's too bad though it would be cool if you could swap between something like a Grit X for more serious runs and use the AW for casual runs while still syncing to Polar Flow.

      Chase the Summit That is odd. Well, thanks for trying Dave. You could probably connect to the phone app with something like the Polar OH-1, but that is not as convenient as using the included OHR!

    Help anyone. I really need to ask you something. I love garmin watches, but the wife wants to match... anyway.. I really like that the interval training on my Garmin, I run for one-minute rest 30 seconds. can i do this on the SE? Im sure there is an app for this on the apple watch. anyone can answer.

    I have been using the Apple Watch 5 for 6 months now and I have to say that the default app isn't enough. You need the iSmoothrun or something else.
    I got used to iSmoothrun more than the other competitor's apps. The app allows me to program my training and also gives me more data.
    I'm actually now looking into getting a Garmin Fenix 6 or a 945 (I'm still deciding and that is why I got into your channel, thanks BTW).
    My decision of getting a dedicated watch for running, cycling, and swimming, is that the Apple Watch GPS seems inaccurate.
    But it may be me again not choosing the right settings on the app iSmoothrun as they recommend you use the watch data only when selecting on the start screen.

      Interesting! Yes, I didn't get perfect GPS accuracy from the AW either. I did find that the "Workoutdoors" app was pretty awesome though!

      @@ChaseTheSummit You are right, I got to know this app after checking the comments here and looks like its better than the iSmoothrun I was using. I will give it a shot.
