Ok so i need to point out a blatant mistake (or implication) i made regarding pricing. As there are so many versions of the One R in the Insta360 store, it's not super clear what the differences are between each bundle. I wrongly assumed (and implied) that you get all 3 mods of the One R for $549, whereas you actually only get the 1-inch mod for that price (the 360 lens costs extra). My bad. Sorry for the misunderstanding!
Understandable, don't worry. I also got extremely lost when I was shopping for my one R twin edition. :)). To put it in perspective, OneR 1inch is definitely pricier, but opens up a world of possibilities due to its modular design/possibility of buying extra lenses later on, whereas with the GoPro, you're pretty much stuck with what you initially ordered. (ND filter would be the summit of GoPro's modularity :))) ). When I bought my One R, there was a bundle with the 360 mod + 1inch mod for about ~730 $usd. Hope I'm not mistaken. That's a lot of cash.
Hello Ben, congratulations!! I would like to ask you which camera would you recommend at the moment for virtual tour. I don't have so much money to invest but would like to make this a side source of income. I found a ricoh theta v in very good conditions and 1 year guarantee for 300. Do you think it would be a good purchase or would you recommend me other one? Thank you so much for your content have been thinking in join the gang for a while. ❤️
Hey Ben, I really like all of the potential with the one R. I’m interested in the one inch mod as well as the 360. What’s the cheapest way to get both? Will I always end up dishing out $700+ USD?
Has to be one of the best reviews I’ve seen on the Gopro vs Insta360 R. Straight to the point, no fluff, jump cuts, walking a dog on the beach, skate boarding, riding a wave, none of it. You gave visual examples in everyday events for people videoing.
I anticipate that the Insta360 team will quickly resolve any inferior stabilization features, as compared to the GoPro, in the near future. They have a very active and frequent firmware and software improvement program, especially compared to Gopro.
I chose the GoPro mainly for the image stabilization. I do agree that the Inta360 has a better visual. It's hard, if not impossible for the smaller sensor to beat a larger sensor. I'm not interested in gimmicky 360 shots, so that wasn't important for me. The GoPro Subscription was only $50 a year, so worth it to save $100. The other factor involved in my decision was I have a prior history with GoPro, so the products are familiar to me. Nice video.
I didn't have to pick. I have them both. I have always been a big GoPro fan but when I got my first Insta360 ONE, I couldn't believe how much I have grown to love 360 cameras. I now have two ONEs, a ONE X, and the ONE R, oh yeah, and the Nano. I got a Fusion over a year ago when they were practically giving them away but it hasn't left the box. 360 has not become my go-to camera zip lining, snowboarding, rafting and for a bunch of other things.
Thank you for this, I have always been thinking Insta360 1" would be the best choice, but after seeing this I think it would only be good for low light situations. The price for both in Norway is almost the same, Gopro 9 is really expensive here, twice as much as Osmo Action.
The reason your videos are better at reviewing is that you speak the “language “ of non pro creators, the normal people that use their cameras for holidays and cycling or other simple things. Top man👍
Excellent, in depth review. Thank you so much! The hero 9 black was the camera for me and I love it. My reasons: - Swappable battery without removing the camera from the mount - Sweet baby jeezus that stabilization! - Cheaper (I did the $349 deal) in both camera and batteries. - Excellent video quality (if the insta360 one R is 10/10, the hero 9 black is 9.5/10, IMHO) - Very good audio quality Like I said, I've been extremely pleased with my H9B. I use it head mounted, so that stabilization is a key factor for me.
G'day Ben, thanks for the review. I own an Insta360One R 1". My friend and I went mountain bike riding, He has a goPro 7 Black, image stabilisation on insta failed me BIG time where GoPro is awesome. Sound quality on Insta is !@#$$ (you hear nothing but wind noise - even with wind noise reduction on) GoPro is perfect. Also I've lost the SD card cover on my insta360 during the ride, it is so easy to fall off but fiddly putting it back in.
Hi Andrew. Do you take real estate photos separately? Or do you pull still from the insta one R? I am just getting started and trying to figure out how the pros are set up. Thanks.
@@hustlindaddiy5194 I am definately not a pro haha. But at the moment I only use my One R for recording action videos or 360 videos. For stills, I will use a camera as haven't fully got round to testing it with the One R yet. Sorry if that doesn't help!
Great video. Good comparison. The conclusion maybe wasn´t perfect. I think the there are diffrent purpose with a gopro hero 9 and insta360. You buy a insta360 for the 360 and the actioncam is a bonus (a second priority). You buy a hero 9 to get a better version of gopro. So the natural competion for insta360 is gopro max. I don´t think I will be in the situation to choose between insta360 and hero 9, I would choose hero 9 or dji osmo, or insta360 or gopro max. But it is a great video. Keep up the great work. You learn a lot about the cameras watching this video.
Great video review. In conclusion the GoPro is a better action cam while the Insta360 is a better video cam. GoPro 9 is still very recent so common issues are still not know. Insta360 has a lot of complains with sound outdoors, specially if there is a bit of wind or you going fast down a mountain for example. Also another issue Insta360 users are complaining is with stitching in the 360 lens. I think the Insta360 is great as a everyday cam, one do it all, but if you want to use it more as action cam for sports then the GoPro is a better option.
Are benefits of the larger sensor on the One R over the Gopro, shooting in low light, only apparent in 5.3k? Or if say both cameras were shooting 1080, would the 1” sensor still be beneficial and perform better in low light?
I know that the video is old. I jumped from Hero 7 Black to Hero 10 about 7 months ago, but I was looking for a camera that performs way better in low-light conditions since I do like taking long walks at night, and my city has inadequate lighting. So... I ordered Insta360 R 1" last week, and I'm about to get it in my mail. The reasons that I didn't go for the RS are: a) it's more expensive, b) it's out of stock in all EU retailers that I've checked, and c) importing from the US/Asia/AU will incur customs fees and last time that I did that, said fees were 1,5 times more expensive than the actual product... So, yeah, I'll get the R 1" and use it mainly for low-light videos/photos (normal, timelapse, timewarp, etc).
Thanks, Ben! My issue with the One R is ... I have an Insta360 One X, which I love, and instead of switching out the modular pieces I can reach into my bag and switch the GoPro for the 360 camera. The one R, no doubt, has better quality than the One X but not enough to lay out the cash.
Same here. I love the form factor of the ONE X... and occasionally use the venture casing which is worry free waterproofing. The combo of the ONE X and an older GoPro has proven to be great. Not convinced that it is worth the upgrade yet.
@@amazinghistoryofvlogging6894 Yes, I also use the GoPro hero 7 which is an amazing camera. Much of my video is taken while cycling. I have a handlebar bag where I keep my Insta360 One X and GoPro. I can easily and safely switch cameras while riding. It isn't possible for me to fiddle with rearranging camera mods of the One R while riding.
I too have a GoPro 7 and use it along with the ONE X. The ONE X provides so many amazing looking angles and I carry both with me on weekend cycling trips. The big downside of the ONE X (over the GOPro 7) is the titanic sized files. At 5.7k it records about 1 gigabyte every 2 minutes, which is totally unmanageable if I want to record an exiting 40 minute descent. With the GoPro however, file size is not a problem, albeit the footage is not as exciting as the novel angles you can get with a One X.
The most important feature of action cameras is horizontal stability. How you see in low light is completely secondary. There are other cameras and lenses that are more suitable in low light or for great depth of field, which can be used on a tripod.
I enjoyed your video: it was very informative and I enjoyed your personality on screen (relaxed and humorous). My choice is the Insta360 as I am more focused on higher quality images as well as quirky effects. Pricing is not a huge issue but versatility, size and flexibility is. PS I enjoy sitting at my computer with the workflow ... but that could change. As an old fart I'm not running around, jumping into bodies of water etc but I visit interesting places both in doors and out.
It has been so long since I have been to the City, what a wonderful way to remember. The QVB amazes me everytime I see it, those cast iron lace work, those old english tiled floors are so amazing, so detailed. We got quotes to tile a living room with the same tiles and the quote was $60K, two third of which was labor alone (1 room). Point being, it is so amazing to see how much work went into making these iconic buildings, and how precious these really are. Brilliant video, and I loved it 30% more because it features Sydney. If you are ever interested in doing a collab showcasing iconic locations of Sydney, I'm all in. People can not travel to this great city, but that should not stop us from celebrating it. All the best mate.
Great video Ben! A small bit of extra info for the flickering in ntsc. This is only an issue in Australia and New Zealand as the current that our country's use in lights causes the flickering because of the hertz the camera's are set to. As long as you stick to Pal in those countries you wont have this issue!
I have been recording my road trip videos with GoPro 8 and I think stabilization is key here and GoPro is good at it.

Hi, thanks for comparison. I opted for Hero 9 as I am a mountain biker. I really need that wide angle shots with superb stabilization. I am not so much interested in 360 content yet. As you said in the video. It is very subjective.
Thanks for the detailed review. I'm still confused though. I want to vlog and capture action videos. GoPro has the stabilization, slow mo and time warp advantage. But 360 One R is amazing for the 1 inch and the 360 mods.
@@rakshiths5089 hey to both of you. I'm looking to motovlog and will be doing so around Bengal, where there will be a lot of greenery and shadows, especially around the edges. If anyone of you have bought the One R with the One Inch Mod, please let me know how you find the footage under similar conditions - going fast with greenery on the sides and lots of leaves and shadows.
@@BenClaremont Hello Ben, congratulations!! I would like to ask you which camera would you recommend at the moment for virtual tour. I have had the One R since February 2020. Am satisfied with the camera itself but I have encountered 3 major issues which would now make me recommend GoPro hands down: - customer service is non-existent: I have been battling since March 2020 to get a refund over two parcels of accessories (altogether worth EUR 250) which never arrived. Though I have provided proof that no shipment was delivered to me, a first request was declined and my attempt to appeal was left unanswered. - Insta360 managed to price accessories higher than GoPro! I had to mention it because it is quite an achievement. Example: One R dive case is priced at EUR 79, while Gopro's costs EUR 49. That is 50% more, for a plastic case with rubber joints! - stitching mark is still rather apparent even in good light condition
Very good video! You were able to capture some important things I've kind of suspected when I edit in post. Dynamic range is much better on the one R by far. Hero 9 has better stabilization... Plus, you didn't mention Go Pro 9 Horizon lock which is on another level from hypersmoothe 3. Plus go pro's new lens mod gives you so much field to capture. I have found stabilization to be better when I use Insta's 360 mod. Go pro has a better built in mic, I have both and wish that the mic could be improved on the One R, it's pretty bad. Go pro has improved their mic over time, but it's still not what the Hero 4 is. That mic was amazing in sound. I wished the Go Pro was not so contrasty and would fix that dynamic range, its been too long to no address it. Go pro you need to have a larger sensor to help alleviate this. When filming in the mountains and light goes from dark to light, go pro gets messy, plus the indoor light flickering is annoying. I use both of these because its a great relationship and for 360, it's more affordable to have the One R vs purchasing a hero 9 and then a go pro max. Right now, Insta 360 is the only competition for go pro, its not even close. If they fix their stabilization and mic, it might be even.
Thanks for the great comparison! I'm not completely sure, but the price section seems to be quiet off: 1) the Hero 9 is $450 and only $350 with the subscription (you get $150 discount and only pay $50 for the 1 year subscription) 2) the One R is around $430 (Amazon US), but that only includes the 360 and 4K lenses. Packages that include the 1 inch mod start at about $750. Still doesn't mean that the One R with the 1 inch sensor isn't worth it, especially if you want that extra image quality in some situations.
@@whatiship89 I'm not saying you should buy the GoPro, just because it's cheaper. I would say the One R is worth the $430 just for the 360 module alone. It all comes down to what you want to do with the camera. Just wanted to correct the prices :)
The permanent price of the One R 1 inch is definitely $549USD. I didn’t subscribe to GoPro but they did make it seem like it was $100 off, then on. Regardless I don’t think a subscription is necessary and most people will likely buy the camera without the subscription.
You have to pay for two years' subscription, otherwise GoPro charges you the full price of the camera. You can read their terms of use regarding the bundle online.
@@BenClaremont Yes, the 1-Inch edition is $549, but that doesn't include the other modules. In the video it show $549 for the One R and your saying: "...but one big factor...you get 3 cameras in one". Really I'm not trying to spread hate or something, I really like your videos. Just was a little confused by what you said about pricing.
I’m a keen amateur photographer currently using Mirrorless Fuji , and DJI Drone. I am definitely swayed toward the Insta360 One. What struck me about the stabilisation test was that although you rightly say the Go Pro Nailed it, the Insta, looked more realistic, if that sequence where you were running, were part of a chase sequence for example, it looked more natural and added tension to the footage. By comparison the Go Pro looked odd and more like cinematic drone footage. It all depends of course on what your aim is. Finally thanks for the intelligent, in depth and hype free review. It’s very much appreciated by someone who might be considered a senior, but who nevertheless can detect baloney when I see it. Well done I shall certainly be viewing more of your content. I’m just glad the Akaso Brave 7, that I ordered from Amazon UK, never arrived, and I got an automatic refund, it’s quality video and stills I am looking for, so I guess I saw your review just in time!
As a photographer, I definitely like the dynamic range on the One R, but that's were it stops for me. I'll go for the GoPro9 when i can afford one, and enjoy my GoPro MAX meanwhile for 360 and simple Hero mode stuff. Great review though, thanks! :)
I am here because my GoPro HERO 9 was stolen last night, I still have my GoPro HERO 8 but hero 9 horizon levelling is amazing. Now, I am considering the insta 360 One R because it can do more...I am just not sure about the audio. My GoPro HERO 9 has perfect audio setup.
Thanks for an extremely detailed video Ben. I really appreciate the amount of care and effort you put into your reviews. I learn a lot from your videos about the One R. btw, i'm a sydneysider like you
Short comment about the indoors flickering.. It is LED bulbs flickering not flourescebt lights but It's the same. They flickee at 50Hz, the frequency of the power mains. I'm baffled why the LED PWM drivers weren't standardized at 100Hz. This will reduce flicker when you dim bulbs, solve eye fatigue at offices aswell as help videogrophers. Set video to either 50fps 25fps PAL or use shutter speed 1/50, 1/100 and problem is solved!
As always, Ben, great, great content! Thanks for all your hard work! I have the Hero9 already and am looking at the OneX 2 (I have the OneX and love it). So much creativity available to us these days it's easy to go broke keeping up.
OneR is definitely the one for me, although I'm still contemplating upgrading from my OneX. I have a question, does the OneR app allow you to switch importing storage from internal to sd card? The OneX app does not and its quite annoying as I have a 512Gb expanded memory but I can't import a video since I only have 64Gb internal memory which is already 70% full of apps and other content.
Great review! The biggest advantage is probably with the sound of the go pro. I think stabilization is really a preference kind of thing, I think too much stabilization can ruin the intensity of what you're doing. Some shaking shows what you're doing is crazy. I ride MTB a lot and if you're riding berms where you go into deep angles, the camera takes away the cool ness of how deep you dig into the berm. For sure some form of stabilization is a good thing, old go pro footage is almost all so shaky it's unwatchable.
Will there be a 3D module for de Insta360 One R in 2021 and when ? Is it worth waiting ? I am looking for a camera for 360 AND 3D (So I don’t wnat to buy a Insta360 One X2 AND an EVO but rather combines in one device (because of saving space while traveling)
I’ve bought the GoPro Hero 9 black (and I do have the 7 and 8 blacks) because of the HDMI output and audio input. I need them to do live streaming with multiple camera’s and a video switcher. Is there an option like this for the insta models? If yes I’m sold 😅
Very good brother I first time watch your video and I really appreciate your work and also my doubt clear witch one better, I choice to insta r better than go pro 9, again thank u 😊, and congratulations in advance to 100k subscribers 👍
Super helpful video! Thanks! I have used both cameras. Great benefits to both. I noticed the desktop app for insta does have a higher resolution output than I can do from the phone app. That said, it did not actually look any better after the upload to youtube and vimeo. On my computer it did look better though...
You just gained a subscriber. You are a lot more better than some pros like Matti happoja that dude acted like go pro 9 was better than insta360 one r and didn't talk about a lot of features that insta360 one R has. Respect +
Possibly the least biased comparison I've found. Most of the others are clear fanboy videos and dont leave you with a useful comparison. For me it will definitely be the GoPro, I don't much like 360, I don't shoot much indoors, the GoPro looks more robust and as it will often be mounted on a dog that matters. And, because of the dog mounting, the amazing stabilisation matters, it means I can lose the gimbal completely. One thing I haven't been able to answer is whether the GoPro Android app has all the functions of the Apple app. On some of the gimbals the Android version is neutered compared to the Apple version.
I love the Insta360, but the the 1 inch bundle is pretty KER-CHING! In March 2021 (in the UK), you can pick up the 360 and wide angle (dual) pack for around £230, but the 1 inch mod is another £500! That's a lot of outlay.
Hey, one suggestion for future comparison, my phone defaulted to 480, I had to manually increase the quality. Maybe suggest that people do the same so they can see the difference.
Was kind of hoping the latest and greatest GoPro would actually look better, but it seems like it doesn't really differ from the previous generation. Lot of the shots look 'dark' in its attempt to be contrasty, but then fail in lighter colors. Even the slow motion footage, the frames themselves, the OneR looked better; easy to see on the edges of the train and the text on your shirt.
One downside to the insta360 is the app on the computer(mac) is significantly different than the phone app. Would love to take advantage of the computing power to process all the effects but they just aren't there.
Really great video Ben. What's an additional positive is that you are an Aussie. Very well presented. It is hard to recognise how much effort you must have to put into it to make this video. I hope you are making lots of money doing it. - Steve (Albury - Australia)
GoPro subscription is only $50 not $100. During checkout you see they actually list the price of the Hero 9 at only $299 with a $50 additional fee for the subscription bringing the total to $350 before tax.
I would add to that, that the kits don't include all the lenses for the One R, meaning that you'll be forking over another couple of hundred dollars to get all 3 lenses...
For me its gp9= 380$+50$ for 1year abo OneR= 400$ for base 4k and 360° + 200$ for one inch so insta is 150$ more expensive for a included 360° cam seems like a steal to me tbh The max litterly costs 450$ so u save 300$ and everything is modular
Dude, that may have been the most incredible review video I have ever seen on any channel anywhere Just packed with an amazing amount of info at an awesome speed. I am not even into cameras and I want to get one now! Awesome phenomenal job!
After watching many comparison videos, I am still torn between choosing the GoPro Maxx & the Insta360 One R. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while now. Which camera would be best for me? I would be mainly using it for motorcycle action videos & also videos in my work shop, doing "build series" with atv, dirt bikes, motorcycles, ect. Much appreciated, thank you 🙏
whatiship89 it’s a load of junk! Unless you like having footage ruined by lens fogging! Had to return mine within a few weeks, and no it was not being used in humid conditions
tlsmoke23 yeah but the only issue is that no mattered the lens the picture in camera is very bad in low light and crushes the shadows to much. But do you think a better lens would fix that? I got the hero 8 so i think ill wait to see the 10 for now. I need a 360 camera though but i think gonna give insta more time to fix the lens or see what the next version of the max is. Decisions decisions!
tlsmoke23 MAYBE...because compare GoPro updates over the last year and Insta updates, Insta blew GoPro (updates wise) completely out of the water (and I’m a GoPro fan)!!
The 1inch improved a ton over the last couple months stabilization will also get better on the insta360 i think the biggest upside for insta360 are the frequent updates if they will bring horizon stabilization to their cameras all u need to do is update it with gopro u need to buy a new camera
WOW BEN!! This was absolutely terrific mate!!! What a FANTASTIC comparison, choc full of ALL the stuff we wanna see in a review like this!!! May I beg of you (cuz it was so good) to make these tests STANDARD in your videos: the Sydney tower views for resolution, Hyde park, 400% crop for detail comparison, the “making myself look like an idiot with a water bottle in public in front of a moving tram”!!!! So good, that tram really helps. The indoor Victoria building was awesome too...go pro to my eyes looked a bit better there actually. One inch photos were far superior! Wow tough choice!! But yes as you corrected in comments the Insta COMBO is quite a bit more expensive. Pretty good how the GoPro stacks up against the one inch in many situations, but definitely not all for sure. Terrific review!!👍👍
Interesting how in the Sydney tower videos look better from a distance on the 360 because of more light and dynamic range, but when zoomed in the GoPro looks better because of better contrast and in turn better apparent sharpness.
There are 4 types of ONE Rz which one shall i get? 4k edition, twin edition, 360edition, aaaand one inch.... oh and prices are also different. I am gonna use it for work. Mostly will take real estate photos and videos... So pls advise me. Which one shall i get.
Great review, and agree that the 360 1" has better quality, but unfortunatly, that comes at a steep price. For the Insta 360 One 1-inch edition, plus the 360 mod plus a memory card it comes to £712 in the UK. The GoPro is currently less than half that at £329.98 when you go with the 1 year subscription. And it should be noted that this is £329.98 INCLUDING the subscription. If you add the Hero 9 to your shopping cart on the GoPro website it breaks it down to be only £279.99(!) for the camera, £49.99 for the 1 year subscription and you also get a free 32Gb memory card thrown in as well... The 1 inch module is great and a real boon for lower light situations but is it worth double? (Oh and you can get a hefty discount on accessories on the GoPro website when you subscribe so another extra bonus there...)
U didnt consider in ur price calculations that u litterly also get a 360° camera aswell so for fair comparison u should take the gp9+gpmax ur well above insta360s asking price if u do that. and a 32gb drive is litterly 8$
Deffo the insta360 1R. I was still trying to decide between dji pocket 2 and the GoPro hero 9 until I saw this and learnt that the 1r can live stream too
Don’t know much about this type of camera. Was checking out the go pro for real estate shots. He showed me the pro had great stabilization. That’s what I was looking for. Thanks for a thorough presentation . 😎
God, I love you, Ben. Great video, but I must be doing something wrong with my settings in my Insta360 One R Twin Edition. For me, I have both (just received my Hero 9 three days ago) and have used these exclusively outside since they're touted as an action camera and use them for offshore fishing and mountain biking. No question, you've proven that simply walking around indoor, our one-inch sensor for the Insta360 will win every time. But unlike you, I simply can not get the colors or dynamic range to look better in the Insta360 outdoors like you. VERY frustrating. I've tried to reduce EV, tried LOG, remain in 5K 30FPS, tried everything and it's native colors just look washed out and over-exposed, especially on sunny days when I'm out riding. Plus, w/o filming in 360 degrees, the flow state stabilization as a single forward-facing action camera, the footage just looks terrible. I'm obviously doing something wrong because your footage from your Twin Edition does look great! So far for general-purpose vids, I'm using the Hero 9 with Linear mode with horizon leveling, 4K w/ Hypersmooth 3.0 boost on, Bit rate 100mbits/s, EV -0.5, and setting max iso to 400 outdoors I've been pretty damn impressed. Mountain biking, I'm using the same settings except trying the Superview w/ Boost on for the slight crop, thus less barrel distortion...going to be looking at this in a few moments... ==>But I don't want to give up on my Insta360 One R just yet! You've given me hope! :)
Jim O'Callaghan great comments, every reviewer raved about the one r but it has too many negatives for me, lens fogging, dropped frames, over heating, not recognising sd cards.... I had one for a few weeks but sent it back due to lens fogging and dropping frames. I have a GoPro Max now and love it. In hero mode it has the horizon levelling that has been included on the hero9. Personally if I was you I would sell all your insta360 stuff and if you want 360 get a Max, you won’t be sorry.
Life Exotics and not a very good one at that! I had a one r and lens fogging and dropped frames made me send it back within weeks of owning, got a GoPro Max now, very happy
I have an Insta360 Evo which I think is such a clever design, it can do 3D or 360. It was totally let down by an Android App that would not connect for me. They never updated or fixed it. Didn't reply to my negative review. Truth is their iPhone App actually worked, so I had to just use an older iPhone that i had. The company is doing really cool things but sometimes things just fall frustratingly short of the finish line.
mynews the problem with insta360 is, they spend too much time creating tricks in the software and not enough time and resource in the product curing ALL the hardware issues...lens fogging, dropping frames, overheating, terrible latch door design, identifying sd card, waterproofing..... the list goes on and on
I love my OneR!! I bought it because of your video testing the different preset shots out front of the Opera House! I’m traveling for the next couple months so I was obsessed with researching what I should get to document my travels. I didn’t want it to just be your standard travel footage like we’ve all seen 1,000x! I wanted some shots to be beautiful and breathtaking, especially of nature! But then I wanted some quirky and fun that help show my personality as well as the daily quirks and challenges that come with traveling solo and living out of a van! Lol and then finally something that is reliable and versatile. So I settled on the Mavic Air 2 for a drone and the Insta360 OneR! And it was your videos that was the final push before I pulled the trigger, so thank you!! I was not disappointed. Now I just want to get my first dslr because I’ve just been using the 4K 60 setting on my iPhone which is actually pretty good ngl.
15:10 ended audio test #2 that was not discussed. There was a MAJOR difference in the unwanted noise reduction on the 1R while the GP picked up the background noise.
Great review and comparison Ben, they both seem like really action cameras. You probably can't go wrong with either one. I wonder if next years Hero 10 will have the one inch sensor. And I still don't really understand Insta360's pricing, so I will probably go with the Hero 9.
Think you forgot to mention in your closing part that if any portion of your channel is going to be dedicated to videos shot in the dark (not just low-light indoors, but think Vegas casinos at night), then it's absolutely worth it to go with the One R because the night shooting difference between One R and Hero 9 is night and day (pun intended) with One R being a clear winner thanks to the 1-inch sensor.
Ben Claremont I was just about to comment where’s the link for 1 inch and 360 mod lol.
Cost wise GoPro all day long

Hey Ben, I really like all of the potential with the one R. I’m interested in the one inch mod as well as the 360. What’s the cheapest way to get both? Will I always end up dishing out $700+ USD?
Has to be one of the best reviews I’ve seen on the Gopro vs Insta360 R. Straight to the point, no fluff, jump cuts, walking a dog on the beach, skate boarding, riding a wave, none of it. You gave visual examples in everyday events for people videoing.
Looking for what you are choosing a camera.
I choose gopro because I do extreme sports
, and gopro in this is simply gorgeous!
I anticipate that the Insta360 team will quickly resolve any inferior stabilization features, as compared to the GoPro, in the near future. They have a very active and frequent firmware and software improvement program, especially compared to Gopro.
You mean Ambarella will, it is their EIS after all. Same processor as in the Mavic Mini and it has a gimbal for a reason.
Top man👍
🙏🏻
I love your videos Ben. Always so much solid info and well presented.
Excellent, in depth review. Thank you so much!
The hero 9 black was the camera for me and I love it. My reasons:
- Swappable battery without removing the camera from the mount
- Sweet baby jeezus that stabilization!
- Cheaper (I did the $349 deal) in both camera and batteries.
- Excellent video quality (if the insta360 one R is 10/10, the hero 9 black is 9.5/10, IMHO)
- Very good audio quality
Like I said, I've been extremely pleased with my H9B.
After seeing this, Im still pretty happy with my One R choice. Especially as it gives me more options for shooting whether in 5k or 360.
Andrew Finck this definitely help. Best of luck.
@X2 JoelMK 33 Hey, I brought the insta360 Twin Edition and think cost me around £440 in total
Agreed. When riding, I use my GoPro as a dash cam. I use my Insta 360 as the primary sharing footage.
I have watched this multiple times already. Thanks for sharing! :) This is very informative.
Are benefits of the larger sensor on the One R over the Gopro, shooting in low light, only apparent in 5.3k?
Or if say both cameras were shooting 1080, would the 1” sensor still be beneficial and perform better in low light?
It would perform better at all resolutions
Thanks for excellent overview. Still impossible to decide
Great video, I have the Insta One R and for me I think that I don't need at this moment the GoPro9. So I will stay with the One R
thanks for the review - I picked the One R because of the 360 camera.
Bro! The best comparison on internet. Thanks
🍻
does front screen of go pro hero 9 bright enough and visible in broad sunlight for vlogging purpose?? please answer I want to make a purchase
@@amazinghistoryofvlogging6894 I expect the 5k GoPro9 files will be bigger too.
Hi even me since it's been 7 months. Can I know which one did you opt and how's it? Please! 🙏
@@rakshiths5089 hey to both of you. I'm looking to motovlog and will be doing so around Bengal, where there will be a lot of greenery and shadows, especially around the edges. Advance Congrats Ben!

I have had the One R since February 2020. Am satisfied with the camera itself but I have encountered 3 major issues which would now make me recommend GoPro hands down:
- customer service is non-existent: I have been battling since March 2020 to get a refund over two parcels of accessories (altogether worth EUR 250) which never arrived.
Hi Ben So which one is more strong ? for mountain bikers ?
Thanks for the great comparison! I'm not completely sure, but the price section seems to be quiet off:
1) the Hero 9 is $450 and only $350 with the subscription (you get $150 discount and only pay $50 for the 1 year subscription)
2) the One R is around $430 (Amazon US), but that only includes the 360 and 4K lenses. Packages that include the 1 inch mod start at about $750.
Still doesn't mean that the One R with the 1 inch sensor isn't worth it, especially if you want that extra image quality in some situations.
Twin edition literally gets you 2 cameras for the price of 1
@@whatiship89 I'm not saying you should buy the GoPro, just because it's cheaper.
What’s a good camera to start off with for beginners?
Roar.F31 this is exactly where I’m at too. Where the one inch shines it really shines! But for now my Max keeps me plenty busy and it’s tons of fun
@@MrMigz626 Depends on your expectations, and what kind of budget you're on really.
The editing app for the Insta360 one r has to be the selling point
Very practical and very useful guidance. I appreciate your hard work. Thank you!
I learn a lot from your videos about the One R. btw, i'm a sydneysider like you
Your welcome
Short comment about the indoors flickering..
It is LED bulbs flickering not flourescebt lights but It's the same. They flickee at 50Hz, the frequency of the power mains. I'm baffled why the LED PWM drivers weren't standardized at 100Hz. This will reduce flicker when you dim bulbs, solve eye fatigue at offices aswell as help videogrophers.
Set video to either 50fps 25fps PAL or use shutter speed 1/50, 1/100 and problem is solved!
The 360 mod plus 1 inch mod is called the Expert Edition
As always, Ben, great, great content! Thanks for all your hard work! I have the Hero9 already and am looking at the OneX 2 (I have the OneX and love it). So much creativity available to us these days it's easy to go broke keeping up.
GoPro wins on sound, stabilization, slow motion and underwater :)
Hi Ben, what about running them via continuous power via USB (wall or power bank)?
OneR is definitely the one for me, although I'm still contemplating upgrading from my OneX. I have a question, does the OneR app allow you to switch importing storage from internal to sd card? The OneX app does not and its quite annoying as I have a 512Gb expanded memory but I can't import a video since I only have 64Gb internal memory which is already 70% full of apps and other content.
Yes you can keep all the files on the SD card with One R, until exporting your final clips
One R all the way..! Nothing can beat it's versatility
The contrast on the gopro is just less light on a smaller sensor. The 1R is better for post production
one r for me hands down. Versatility ftw
Wow, that is an excellent review, not missing a single aspect! Thanks a lot♥️
Can you imagine when GoPro finally releases a one inch camera 👏🏻✅
That will be awesome
@Facundo J. Ibañez I'm bookmarking this for next your. Be ready.
Sony has one in its RXO II, and since they're already using Sony sensors....
It had better be more reliable than my experience with GoPros...no more for me!
Will there be a 3D module for de Insta360 One R in 2021 and when ?
Is it worth waiting ?
I am looking for a camera for 360 AND 3D
(So I don’t wnat to buy a Insta360 One X2 AND an EVO but rather combines in one device (because of saving space while traveling)
Go pro is still the overall king. Video stabilisation is so important for what these cameras are used for. Superior screen and overall camera ui.

Thanks! Makes me want to visit Sydney again!
Respect +
Buy the way when do you think they will release insta 360 One R 2?
Should I wait for R2 or just buy R1?
Yes good point
Was kind of hoping the latest and greatest GoPro would actually look better, but it seems like it doesn't really differ from the previous generation. Lot of the shots look 'dark' in its attempt to be contrasty, but then fail in lighter colors. Even the slow motion footage, the frames themselves, the OneR looked better; easy to see on the edges of the train and the text on your shirt.
One downside to the insta360 is the app on the computer(mac) is significantly different than the phone app. Would love to take advantage of the computing power to process all the effects but they just aren't there.
The latest update is actually quite good for general editing duties, but yeah if you want to do those gimmicky effects then you need the app...
For me its gp9= 380$+50$ for 1year abo
OneR= 400$ for base 4k and 360° + 200$ for one inch so insta is 150$ more expensive for a included 360° cam seems like a steal to me tbh
The max litterly costs 450$ so u save 300$ and everything is modular
R00KIET GoPro is only $350 which includes the one year subscription. Total cost is 350 subscription included.

Insta 360 1R is my pick,. Super interested in 360 media
give GP a few months for updates and 3rd party lens. I see a metamorphic lens in the mix and ability to go warp speed to slow mo w/one button.
tlsmoke23 yeah but the only issue is that no mattered the lens the picture in camera is very bad in low light and crushes the shadows to much. But do you think a better lens would fix that? @@armando.visuals Don't think any lens can't fix low light issues. Bigger sensor yes. We will have to wait to see what Hero 10 has to offer.
tlsmoke23 MAYBE...because compare GoPro updates over the last year and Insta updates, Insta blew GoPro (updates wise) completely out of the water (and I’m a GoPro fan)!!

I expected more from 1 inch sensor to be honest. And image stabilization is so far behind GoPro. Insta change it asap! :) cheers
Thanks! 🙏🏻
Biggest upside of the insta360 is future proofment like the lipos will be usable over multiple generations same as lenses and the compute units
Why Do you not like the 4k Module? Thanks for the video
I was still trying to decide between dji pocket 2 and the GoPro hero 9 until I saw this and learnt that the 1r can live stream too
That stabilization test 😂😂😂 Well done, HyperSmooth 3.0 is Crazy good
Yeah it is!
GoPro really set the standard here, although some of the other action cameras are close on its heels.
thanks for the video, it really helps! I would also like to point out that GoPro also supports modules like MAX lense and microhpne and stuff now
14:10 wtf was up with the clouds in the sky on the One R here? TH-cam compression?
Don’t know much about this type of camera. Was checking out the go pro for real estate shots. He showed me the pro had great stabilization. That’s what I was looking for. Thanks for a thorough presentation . 😎
Ahhhhh thank you for this!! I am going with the Insta360 :)
Which is the best camera?
I own the one r and the gopro. agreed- colors look much better on the hero 9
The insta 360 is just a fun toy.
Literally the video I’ve been looking for!! Have both unopened... bought them for an upcoming 2 week Cancun trip. need to return one!
Awesome! Enjoy
Do you think the Stablization will get better through software updates?
GoPro Hero 9 for the win!
Good work.your differenciating shots are amazing.thanks for the valuable comparision ben
There is now a Christmas tree in QVB? wow. Merry Christmas everyone.
Christmas year round bub.
