Ironic indeed. Really feels like life and liberty have been going downhill and reverse awfully fast. Even more ironically, I found my grandfather's discharge papers from the Navy just the other day. It was a wild experience. Found out he was active duty from june 1944 till November of 45. It was the first time I ever saw his signature. Quite humbling.

Great work, Chris. My father carried a Carbine in WW2 Italy (and everything else in time). He was a serious Infantry rifleman (later competition shooter) and preferred the Grand for most situations, especially at distance. He said the Carbine was good for close urban and especially, for "herding prisoners". He was severely wounded (88mm) shortly after Rome, June 44, so he never used the 30rd mags. In the 60s he bought an unissued GI Carbine for $17 from the DCM, and a 1911 for $20.
YUP. I don't buy guns to look at them I buy guns to shoot them. Matching numbers or manufacturers or any of that stuff is just interesting bonuses that don't mean anything if the gun doesn't go bang.

I don't like simply looking at guns either, I only really enjoy them if I can shoot them. However, I still care whether the exact gun I'm shooting has history. There's also the fact that a gun with matching serial numbers is a gun where you know that the feel of operating it is the same as it was originally. If there is a mismatch, it may mean that some parts are not authentic (even to the point of operating differently) or not "broken-in" together as they would be in a gun that has seen action.
I inherited a M1 carbine along with about 400 rounds of 110 grain ammo. Cleaned it up and researched it. A Winchester made in late 1944 with all of the original parts. Clean as a whistle and works fine. I did buy some extra mags for it and the newer ones do have a stop mechanism when you've fired your last round. Very simple. Good old American ingenuity.
Yes Inland Winchester Singer (the sewing machine co) IBM, Underwood, Quality hardware and machine (Receivers), National Postal Machine, Saginaw (GM's transmission and steering gear box people) and the one everyone wants Rock-ola the juke box company just to name a few as there were like 4 million made. ;
Awesome video! Did a complete rebuild on a 1943 Underwood with all original Underwood parts. Used SARCO swaged barrel, Numrich walnut stock and all parts re-parkerized. Runs flawless like a Singer sewing machine. My go to home defense weapon.
One bit of information regarding M1 carbine and reliability with 30 round magazines is that those magazines were designed exclusively for the M2 carbine. And since the magazine was longer and heavier there was an extra third magazine catch built into the gun and the magazines to stabilize the heavier magazine. That is why sometimes the 30 rounders don’t work so well in an M1 carbine.
@@apuzyr my grandpa got one for around that price or maybe even cheaper in the 1960s. He used it for hunting hogs. he said they used to sell them by the barrel full they were so cheap back then.
Wish I would've gotten one from CMP too. I did get an M1 Garand in 2013 from them that I'm super glad I did. Best $530 I've ever spent, and it's what I'd have if I could only have one gun.
I bought a m1 garand back in 1990 at a western auto for $300. They had carbines for sale for $100, I was only making 6 bucks a hour so I couldn't afford the carbine. Who would have thought they would be worth so much now.

This video has a lot of information and insight in a relatively short time. When I was still in the service, one of the lead scouts in my company's recon team carried an M2 carbine all over the place. He preferred it to the M16 or the shorter CAR 15 version. I remember him carrying that carbine all throughout his time in our unit. In the jungles that we often operated in, it was, in his view, the most reliable and effective weapon there was for a lead scout.
An additional piece of feedback about the "jungle clips" ; Unless you have an M2 type mag release the weight of two thirty round mags tends to beat up the catches, and often under rapid fire your magazine can fall out. I purchased a jungle clip for my first carbine, and after a little tweaking and blending got it to hold together pretty reliably, but had the mags falling out of the gun, and the detents got out of shape until I installed an M2 type release.
Excellent vid - thanks. Starting shooting M1 Carbines as a kid at grandpa's place in the woods. Always loved the handiness of these arms and with soft point bullets there were quite lethal on armadillos and coyotes.

I have a Plainfield machine... mother bought it for me when I was a young teenager. Still have it to this day. It’s never jammed or miss fired best I can remember...ended up putting a scope on it and it’s a very accurate rifle for what it is...I love to go coyote hunting with it....very good rifle
The Plainfield was an outstanding commercial carbine. SOME of the Iver Johnsons made in ark were ok as well. Believe it or not I had a Universal series 1003 that worked great even with soft points. I bought it because We had drug dealers in my apt complex at the time who were armed with uzi,s. I feel the Carbine is superior to ANY 9mm subgun unless sound supression is an issue.
I bought one in 1972 new in the wrapper never had a FTF or FTE with the 5 and 15 round mags it came with. It still looks new. Dang you guys had some cool Moms ;
Breaks my heart to watch this video. At one time I owned two, both WW2 vintage that had been given away as military aid, then eventually reimported. I also had a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine so I could have a pistol to use the same ammo. I got the Carbines because I had always been interested in them since seeing Gregory Peck carry one around in the Korean War movie Pork Chop Hill. They were fun to shoot. Surplus magazines were easy to come by at any gun show, and cheap. The recoil was mild enough that I thought they would be useful to arm the younger, smaller, weaker members of my extended family if the need for group self defense arose. Sadly, when I got older and had to downsize due to health problems, I had to sell or give them away.
I have 2 Garands(1942 & 1943) from CMP. Shoot, damn they shoot. Love both of them. I have a m-1 carbine(1943). Had CMP put a new barrel on it. It is a tack driver out to 200 yards. Absolutely love that carbine.
There wasn't a run on 30 carbine unlike everything else. The price per round hasn't gone up because there WAS a good stock of it that manufacturers didn't have to rush it out the door like everything else
I bought several couplers at a gun show decades ago and they are much smaller and have two very short screws that tighten on the mags. I haven't had any problems with them. I also bought a dozen or so US GOVT. 15 and 30 mags for around $40. I sure am glad I bought them when I did. I had no idea they cost so much now. Great content!
My findings are along the lines of yours. The M1 carbine makes a great house or small car gun. The rail/red dot makes for a good time and accessory improvement. Thanks for the video.
I have a .30 caliber. It originally had a collapsible stock and a buddy 30 years ago changed it to a synthetic stock. It’ has never malfunctioned. I have no idea what type it is (history, use, etc…) but it’s certainly excellent.
Keep talking about the M1 carbine!! I have my grandpa’s that he carried in WW2 and I love the rifle. It might be a sentimental love for this gun but it is fun to shoot.
I’ve had two M1 Carbines. One was a Plainfield mix master and the one I have now is a late war Quality Hardware. I enjoy shooting it maybe more than any other milsurp I have and it’s a hit favorite with others. As long as my M1 Carbine is clean it is generally reliable (I find the 30 carbine leaves quite a bit of residue behind that fouls quickly). Replacing the original springs with Wolff springs made a huge difference in reliability. The KCI magazines I have with different finishes have generally been quite reliable. Some of them seem better made than others and some have more or less follower tilt. The ones I have that are actually blued are rock solid. The ones with the painted black finish are a bit iffy. It’s sort of a roll of dice buying them as the ones I have were only bought a few years apart from the same vendor and yet the quality seems noticeably different.
I have taped mags together when I was young and macho but unless you are willing to kneel or stand up on the battlefield they are useless. The MACV SOG guy's carried a 600 rnd combat load in 20 rnd mags and got phenomenal results doing things no man should be asked to do!
That stinks. I was pretty close to selling mine before things turned around for me. Hope you're able to get your hands on one again before too long. Also, I have the Ultimak rail, anti is fantastic. I have the Trijicon RX01NSN on it, so it looks just like the picture on Ultimak's site. Can't wait until I can afford to shoot it again.

Back in ‘78, I assembled one from mostly WWII NOS parts. Its fired perfectly tens of thousands rounds of 50’s vintage Lake City. Ita a favourite hunting & targets. My go to for home defense if needed.
When surplus M1 carbines went on sale in the early 60s, my father bought two of them. We used them as truck guns on our family ranch for decades after that. I killed a deer with one of them once. Not that it is my recommended deer rifle, but I was filling stock feeders and a deer came out of the brush about 40 yards away as I prepared to drive to the next feeder. Deer season was open and I had tags left on my license. Shooting deer from a truck is legal on private property in Texas. 'Nuff said. I inherited both the carbines when my father passed away. Great, fun little guns and definitely good for self defense. The 30 round mags were originally designed for the M2 select fire version which came out late in WW2. Taping the mags together was originally a WW2 expedient for 15 round mags. A lot of the "improvements" to the M1 carbine, including the change of magazine catch, bayonet lug, adjustable rear sight were incorporated originally in the M2 carbine and later the M1s were upgraded to include these features. The original design of the M1 was to be a select fire carbine, but that feature was left out of production until 1944. One of the reasons was that 15 round mags were considered unsuitable for full automatic fire and the heavier 30 round magazine required a change of the magazine latch to secure the magazine better. There was a huge demand for the carbines, so production went ahead in 1941 without the select fire feature.
Maryland changed the law so you could use a straight cartridge for the places a Rifle isn't allowed - which is most of the state. I understand they were supposed to allow a M1 Carbine, however the law says 1200 LBS at the muzzle and the carbine falls short. Most shots where I am you'd be lucky to see a target that's 100 yards away. Almost all of them are closer than that.
@@robertthomas5906 Yeah, some states feel they need to complicate things. In Texas, the qualification for a deer cartridge is "any centerfire". When I was growing up, we could kill 5 deer per year per person (it's more now) in a season that was 2 months long. I lived on a ranch and hunted there with my grandfather, father, 3 brothers, 1 sister that hunted, and later, my 3 sons. Not to mention invitees... friends and extended family. Suffice to say I have killed, or seen killed, hundreds of deer in the last 70 years (60 that I have been hunting) I myself have killed deer with everything from a .22 Hornet to a .405 WCF, shotguns and handguns. They all killed deer. My favorite, and caliber of choice for deer, is the .300 Savage in a 1950s vintage Savage Model 99 rifle w/peep sight. Stay within the range limits of your ability with that firearm/cartridge combination, place your shots well and they will all kill deer.
Chris; I watch just about every video you guys put out there. I will have to say your .30 Carbine series is to date my favorite. I own an early knock off by Universal. So far its fairly reliable, with magazines being the major culprit for malfunctions. Good mags and she runs great. 30 rounders forget it.
These guns were made to be used in warfare by an army with a somewhat endless supply of NEW mags. If one failed, you threw it away, reached for a new one, shed a wistful tear, keep moving forward.
I absolutely LOVE Garand-style actions. I have an M1A, a Mini 14, and a Mini Thirty, absolutely magnificent rifles all of them (the Minis are relatively modified to make them their best, the M1A came pretty damn great right from the factory and has had just a very little trigger work). I had an old M1 carbine years ago, it was in pretty good shape and functioned pretty well and didn’t cost much. I traded it for a dirtbike, which was an excellent deal, but I’ve now had plenty of dirtbikes and you can’t really get nice old GI M1s anymore, at least not for what I’m willing to pay. I didn’t realize anyone produced good new ones, I’m going to look into this Fulton outfit, I’d love to have a good one again and I don’t care about authenticity or value, just that it’s a good shooter. I fully support the rail and red-dot on the old rifle, I’m all about making them shoot better, regardless of whether they’re ‘supposed’ to be that way.
This is such an underrated channel! The information you glean from these videos is reminiscent of Walter Cronkite delivering the news. It's honest first hand information that isn't trying to sell you on a product. If you have any interest great here's my experience. If not that's great too. Trick is, as the old carbines wear out, getting harder and harder to find new ammo rather than stuff that has been sitting in storage depots for 40-50 years And if you want better than FMJ, hard to find and prices closer to .30-06

I've experienced the same with all of my 16 ga ammunition (again, inherited guns -- Win Model 12 pump and a Browning Auto5 -- that are a joy to shoot). The worst has been ammunition for my 1920's era 7.65mm Luger. Maybe I should move to the 21st century!
late last year I was looking for a mini 14 ranch and found a entire warehouse lot for sale that included 2 NOS carbines and korean war sealed ammo, 10,000 rounds. Picked it up all for super cheap. My henry 357 is way more accurate and powerful but its been a fun little plinker.

That looks exactly like the 30 carbine I built for myself. Also using a Fulton armory receiver and a criterion barrel. The rest of my rifle is new, old GI stock parts. I had the barrel clocked by a retired Camp Perry gun Smith. I found just about every thing you say about the magazines are true. I rebuilt old GI mags with non hold open followers. I'm so pleased to see your video explaining the same things I want through. Except I started with all new parts. It took a few adjustments but my rifle runs like a champ. What puzzles me is how many hate this rifle. I get so many stupid comments about how anemic the round is. And how unreliable the gun is. I was once asked by a buddy at my gun range why I would waste my time on a rifle like this.
@@northernninety7 with decent ammo a .30 carbine is is more than sufficient for most situations. Could it be improved? Over course it could, but it is roughly equivalent to a .357mag rifle. You can easily take deer with .357mag, you could even take a bear/elk/moose with good shot placement (short range headshot would drop them). It has historical proof of its effectiveness against people. Anything under deer sized, except for feral hogs, wouldn’t stand a chance. It’s lightweight, low recoil so anyone could shoot it accurately. It is a great ‘one and done’ rifle if you have one that runs well.
Your four part series on the M1 Carbine was one of my favorites. Good or bad, I watched and listened to all the Pros and Cons and try to not get to uptight about what is being said. I mean the gun is a design from 80 years ago. It was designed for personnel protection and was never intended to be a battle rifle. One take away is the Carbine is and hoot to run.
Why is it that there aren't many personal defense rifles (like the M-1 carbine) that weigh around 5 lbs (and are NOT an AR)? Most rifles are around 7 lbs. and too heavy for many people. My wife is tiny and we live in Massachusetts where ARs are prohibited. It would seem that manufacturers are missing an opportunity to sell to new smaller statured shooters. I'm aware that Keltec makes several light weight weapons; however, I'm really looking for a solidly built rifle that is designed to last (like the M-1 carbine). The Ruger PC carbine would be perfect, except that it weighs almost 7 lbs.
maybe check out the ruger pc carbine charger or whatever the pistol version is called. Its got a short pistol length barrel which might help with the weight.
Great video. The advantage of not having the bolt hold open magazine is that if you have two perps to deal with at close quarters with one round in the chamber and have to deal with one of them, the other perp won’t know your weapon is empty so he most likely will not want to test your resolve!!
@@jon4715 I mean, all guns are quite concussive indoors. Compared to intermediate rifle (5.56mm) or full size rifle (.308)though I'd expect it to be calmer, given it's more of a pistol cartridge.
I used to collect carbine mags so I had a large supply to choose from. I picked 15 mags that would drop out of the mag well just by pressing the mag release and keep these as my main shooter mags. My Winchester carbine is very similar to yours except I run an Aimpoint M4 on it.
Excellent review. Regarding the gas piston nut (aka castle nut), they are often loose in old carbines. In fact, every carbine I have owned, whether GI or commercial, had a loose castle nut. They can be tightened, but they will just come loose again. Applying too much torque to compensate is not going to work and likely will crack your gas block, making the barrel useless. Some folks have tried Loctite with mixed results. Others have used Teflon tape. The proper procedure is to stake them in place. This is what the Army did on all their carbines. There is a right way and a wrong way to stake the nut in place. Do it right, and the nut will not come loose. Do it wrong, and the nut will crack or break. The nuts were never intended to be reused, so if the piston needed cleaning or replacement, the nut was considered a sacrificial part. I have encountered two types of military nuts. Both are three pronged, but the Type 2 (Type II) has a recess in it that traps more gas and allows for a longer piston stroke. Universal later developed a four prong nut. I have never found a four-prong tool and ended up making one to get this nut off of one of their carbines, after which I installed a GI three-prong nut. There are two types of three prong tools. The best one is the multipurpose armorer's tool, but these are rarer than hen's teeth. I've been able to get by using the far more common wrench shown in this video, but it can be a bear when encountering a really tight nut.
I picked up a Universal model that was built with a duel recoil spring from a surplus kit. That thing has had no problem like most other Carbines that i have shot. Glad i got it for $300 because its not valued like the WW2 ones. Good vid!
My Dad, Col William Bournes, nominated for the Medal of Honor for his helicopter rescue missions at the Battle of Cu Chi on October 22,1966, said the M1 carbine was his favorite weapon. Dad knew guns.
Lots of feed issues with mine except with one mag, thought it was a mag issue. Replaced the recoil spring and the old one had compressed by an inch and a half, no issues since then.

Tula steelcase ammo feeds great through my M1 Carbine. I have an Erma Firarms M1 Carbine...mid-60's. all USGI parts except the receiver. I had it heat-treated to USGI specs...great gun!!
@@alexeimagher9083 not a bad point. But the appeal here is classic handling and extremely light weight. So it's not quite a direct competitor. Personally I think I'd LOVE a stainless mini30 that's been customized to be a 14.5" pin and weld job, red dot mount, and one of those classic style wood and folding stocks.
I bought a brand new kahr Arms Auto Ordnance m1 out of the box it was great, after a couple hundred rounds I was having bolt follow issues( it became 2 shot burst). I had to warranty it send it back to auto ordnance . Now I have a couple thousand rounds through it and it has run flawlessly not even one malfunction!
I recently got a rescue carbine as well, it came from Louisiana state penitentiary as surplus. Beat to piss, never cleaned; the second magazine i put through it, the operating slide grenaded. I tracked down a replacement, some Wolff recoil springs and some KCI mags. So far it's working well, but I need the bolt tool to replace those parts because ejection is currently piss weak.

I can see from the close-ups that you have the M2 style magazine catch, with the tab on the side to engage the third lug on the 30 round mags. If any of you out there want to use the 30 rd. mags, install that style catch if it's not already there! The M1 style only engages the back two lugs, which is all the original 15 rounders had, and will not provide enough support to ensure reliable feeding with the heavier mags. I learned this the hard way. If not for the love of a good woman, and and an energetically scored montage, I would have lost everything.
Purchased my Iver Johnson M1 carbine new in 1987. Ordered it with a +2 inch barrel. Surplus ammo didn't run well so only new ammo since then. 15 round mags work well, none of the 30 round mags have worked very well, whether new, or mil surp. Seems insane to me that some of these sell for $ 1,000 + -. I have the most fun shooting with this rifle. Still shooting it every few months and about 100+ rounds each time I take it out. Dad carried a M1 Garand during his combat in the Korean War ( USMC) .
my kci magazines were doing the same thing, so all i did was bend the front of the feed lip(where the bullet sits) away from the bullet a bit, and they all feed fine now. i also took the mags apart and oiled the insides and rearranged the springs so they didnt scrunch up and jerk so bad.
I always thought there would be a market for an updated M1 Carbine. But it would have to be done in a way that kept most of the WW II aesthetic. I.e., no bull pup conversion and the like. Or anything that increases the weight beyond what it was originally. Definitely better/more dependable mags, flared mag wells, and an AR style safety.
@@overweightowl2295 10mm would work. And maybe 9mm (which was done but not very well by Chiappa if memory serves). I think the look, weight, and balance are key. For example, the Ruger PC carbine is nice but heavy as hell for what it is. For that weight you might as well get an AR.
@@EricDaMAJ The Chiappa 9mm is a blowback action, so it’s not really an M1 Carbine. In 10mm maybe it could be gas operated, and so would not require the bolt mass of a blowback. So far I’ve not found any 10mm gassed carbine made by anyone. Lone Wolf made noises about offering one a few years ago (not an M1) but it never materialized.

He said the Carbine was good for close urban and especially, for "herding prisoners". He was severely wounded (88mm) shortly after Rome, June 44, so he never used the 30rd mags. In the 60s he bought an unissued GI Carbine for $17 from the DCM, and a 1911 for $20.

I don't like simply looking at guns either, I only really enjoy them if I can shoot them. However, I still care whether the exact gun I'm shooting has history. There's also the fact that a gun with matching serial numbers is a gun where you know that the feel of operating it is the same as it was originally. If there is a mismatch, it may mean that some parts are not authentic (even to the point of operating differently) or not "broken-in" together as they would be in a gun that has seen action.
I inherited a M1 carbine along with about 400 rounds of 110 grain ammo. Cleaned it up and researched it. A Winchester made in late 1944 with all of the original parts. Clean as a whistle and works fine. I did buy some extra mags for it and the newer ones do have a stop mechanism when you've fired your last round. Very simple. Good old American ingenuity.

Awesome video! Did a complete rebuild on a 1943 Underwood with all original Underwood parts. Used SARCO swaged barrel, Numrich walnut stock and all parts re-parkerized. Runs flawless like a Singer sewing machine. My go to home defense weapon.

One bit of information regarding M1 carbine and reliability with 30 round magazines is that those magazines were designed exclusively for the M2 carbine. And since the magazine was longer and heavier there was an extra third magazine catch built into the gun and the magazines to stabilize the heavier magazine. That is why sometimes the 30 rounders don’t work so well in an M1 carbine.

i was lucky to get one from CMP a few years ago at $700 when they had very few in stock and sold them online.
Many decades ago, they used to sell M1 Carbines in the back of popular magazines like Boy’s Life and Popular Science for less than $50.
@@apuzyr my grandpa got one for around that price or maybe even cheaper in the 1960s. He used it for hunting hogs. he said they used to sell them by the barrel full they were so cheap back then.
Wish I would've gotten one from CMP too. I did get an M1 Garand in 2013 from them that I'm super glad I did. Best $530 I've ever spent, and it's what I'd have if I could only have one gun.
I bought a m1 garand back in 1990 at a western auto for $300. They had carbines for sale for $100, I was only making 6 bucks a hour so I couldn't afford the carbine. Who would have thought they would be worth so much now.

This video has a lot of information and insight in a relatively short time. When I was still in the service, one of the lead scouts in my company's recon team carried an M2 carbine all over the place. He preferred it to the M16 or the shorter CAR 15 version. I remember him carrying that carbine all throughout his time in our unit. In the jungles that we often operated in, it was, in his view, the most reliable and effective weapon there was for a lead scout.

Unless you have an M2 type mag release the weight of two thirty round mags tends to beat up the catches, and often under rapid fire your magazine can fall out.
I purchased a jungle clip for my first carbine, and after a little tweaking and blending got it to hold together pretty reliably, but had the mags falling out of the gun, and the detents got out of shape until I installed an M2 type release.
This is one of my all time favorites. I love how it looks, always wanted one.

I have a Plainfield machine... mother bought it for me when I was a young teenager. Still have it to this day. It’s never jammed or miss fired best I can remember...ended up putting a scope on it and it’s a very accurate rifle for what it is...I love to go coyote hunting with it....very good rifle

The Plainfield was an outstanding commercial carbine. SOME of the Iver Johnsons made in ark were ok as well. Believe it or not I had a Universal series 1003 that worked great even with soft points. I bought it because We had drug dealers in my apt complex at the time who were armed with uzi,s. I feel the Carbine is superior to ANY 9mm subgun unless sound supression is an issue.
I bought one in 1972 new in the wrapper never had a FTF or FTE with the 5 and 15 round mags it came with. It still looks new. Dang you guys had some cool Moms ;
Breaks my heart to watch this video. At one time I owned two, both WW2 vintage that had been given away as military aid, then eventually reimported. I also had a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine so I could have a pistol to use the same ammo. I got the Carbines because I had always been interested in them since seeing Gregory Peck carry one around in the Korean War movie Pork Chop Hill.
They were fun to shoot. Surplus magazines were easy to come by at any gun show, and cheap. The recoil was mild enough that I thought they would be useful to arm the younger, smaller, weaker members of my extended family if the need for group self defense arose. Sadly, when I got older and had to downsize due to health problems, I had to sell or give them away.
I have 2 Garands(1942 & 1943) from CMP. Shoot, damn they shoot. Love both of them. I have a m-1 carbine(1943). Had CMP put a new barrel on it. It is a tack driver out to 200 yards. Absolutely love that carbine.

There wasn't a run on 30 carbine unlike everything else. The price per round hasn't gone up because there WAS a good stock of it that manufacturers didn't have to rush it out the door like everything else
I have a WWII vintage one, all original except for the rear peep sight. It runs like a sewing machine and I love it.
I bought several couplers at a gun show decades ago and they are much smaller and have two very short screws that tighten on the mags. I haven't had any problems with them. I also bought a dozen or so US GOVT. 15 and 30 mags for around $40. I sure am glad I bought them when I did. I had no idea they cost so much now. Great content!
My findings are along the lines of yours. The M1 carbine makes a great house or small car gun. The rail/red dot makes for a good time and accessory improvement. Thanks for the video.

I have a .30 caliber. It originally had a collapsible stock and a buddy 30 years ago changed it to a synthetic stock. It’ has never malfunctioned. I have no idea what type it is (history, use, etc…) but it’s certainly excellent.

I just picked up one last week and was able to put a few rounds through it over the weekend. I love it.
I’ve had two M1 Carbines. One was a Plainfield mix master and the one I have now is a late war Quality Hardware. I enjoy shooting it maybe more than any other milsurp I have and it’s a hit favorite with others.
As long as my M1 Carbine is clean it is generally reliable (I find the 30 carbine leaves quite a bit of residue behind that fouls quickly). Replacing the original springs with Wolff springs made a huge difference in reliability.
The KCI magazines I have with different finishes have generally been quite reliable. Some of them seem better made than others and some have more or less follower tilt. The ones I have that are actually blued are rock solid. The ones with the painted black finish are a bit iffy. It’s sort of a roll of dice buying them as the ones I have were only bought a few years apart from the same vendor and yet the quality seems noticeably different.
I have taped mags together when I was young and macho but unless you are willing to kneel or stand up on the battlefield they are useless. The MACV SOG guy's carried a 600 rnd combat load in 20 rnd mags and got phenomenal results doing things no man should be asked to do!

When surplus M1 carbines went on sale in the early 60s, my father bought two of them. We used them as truck guns on our family ranch for decades after that. I killed a deer with one of them once. Not that it is my recommended deer rifle, but I was filling stock feeders and a deer came out of the brush about 40 yards away as I prepared to drive to the next feeder. Deer season was open and I had tags left on my license. Shooting deer from a truck is legal on private property in Texas. 'Nuff said.
I inherited both the carbines when my father passed away. Great, fun little guns and definitely good for self defense.
The 30 round mags were originally designed for the M2 select fire version which came out late in WW2. Taping the mags together was originally a WW2 expedient for 15 round mags. A lot of the "improvements" to the M1 carbine, including the change of magazine catch, bayonet lug, adjustable rear sight were incorporated originally in the M2 carbine and later the M1s were upgraded to include these features.
The original design of the M1 was to be a select fire carbine, but that feature was left out of production until 1944. One of the reasons was that 15 round mags were considered unsuitable for full automatic fire and the heavier 30 round magazine required a change of the magazine latch to secure the magazine better. There was a huge demand for the carbines, so production went ahead in 1941 without the select fire feature.
Maryland changed the law so you could use a straight cartridge for the places a Rifle isn't allowed - which is most of the state. I understand they were supposed to allow a M1 Carbine, however the law says 1200 LBS at the muzzle and the carbine falls short. Most shots where I am you'd be lucky to see a target that's 100 yards away. Almost all of them are closer than that.
@@robertthomas5906 Yeah, some states feel they need to complicate things. In Texas, the qualification for a deer cartridge is "any centerfire". When I was growing up, we could kill 5 deer per year per person (it's more now) in a season that was 2 months long. I lived on a ranch and hunted there with my grandfather, father, 3 brothers, 1 sister that hunted, and later, my 3 sons. Not to mention invitees... friends and extended family. Suffice to say I have killed, or seen killed, hundreds of deer in the last 70 years (60 that I have been hunting) I myself have killed deer with everything from a .22 Hornet to a .405 WCF, shotguns and handguns. They all killed deer.
My favorite, and caliber of choice for deer, is the .300 Savage in a 1950s vintage Savage Model 99 rifle w/peep sight.
Stay within the range limits of your ability with that firearm/cartridge combination, place your shots well and they will all kill deer.
Chris; I watch just about every video you guys put out there. I will have to say your .30 Carbine series is to date my favorite. I own an early knock off by Universal. So far its fairly reliable, with magazines being the major culprit for malfunctions. Good mags and she runs great. 30 rounders forget it.
These guns were made to be used in warfare by an army with a somewhat endless supply of NEW mags. If one failed, you threw it away, reached for a new one, shed a wistful tear, keep moving forward.
Cool to see new videos on the M1 carbine. I have an all original one that was issued during the war. I got it as a gift, and I love it.
I absolutely LOVE Garand-style actions. I have an M1A, a Mini 14, and a Mini Thirty, absolutely magnificent rifles all of them (the Minis are relatively modified to make them their best, the M1A came pretty damn great right from the factory and has had just a very little trigger work).
I had an old M1 carbine years ago, it was in pretty good shape and functioned pretty well and didn’t cost much. I traded it for a dirtbike, which was an excellent deal, but I’ve now had plenty of dirtbikes and you can’t really get nice old GI M1s anymore, at least not for what I’m willing to pay.
I didn’t realize anyone produced good new ones, I’m going to look into this Fulton outfit, I’d love to have a good one again and I don’t care about authenticity or value, just that it’s a good shooter. I fully support the rail and red-dot on the old rifle, I’m all about making them shoot better, regardless of whether they’re ‘supposed’ to be that way.
This is such an underrated channel! The information you glean from these videos is reminiscent of Walter Cronkite delivering the news. It's honest first hand information that isn't trying to sell you on a product. If you have any interest great here's my experience. If not that's great too. It's refreshing considering the level of ads we get thrown at us constantly

Trick is, as the old carbines wear out, getting harder and harder to find new ammo rather than stuff that has been sitting in storage depots for 40-50 years And if you want better than FMJ, hard to find and prices closer to .30-06

I've experienced the same with all of my 16 ga ammunition (again, inherited guns -- Win Model 12 pump and a Browning Auto5 -- that are a joy to shoot). The worst has been ammunition for my 1920's era 7.65mm Luger. Maybe I should move to the 21st century!
late last year I was looking for a mini 14 ranch and found a entire warehouse lot for sale that included 2 NOS carbines and korean war sealed ammo, 10,000 rounds. Picked it up all for super cheap. My henry 357 is way more accurate and powerful but its been a fun little plinker.

That looks exactly like the 30 carbine I built for myself. Also using a Fulton armory receiver and a criterion barrel. The rest of my rifle is new, old GI stock parts. I had the barrel clocked by a retired Camp Perry gun Smith. I found just about every thing you say about the magazines are true. I rebuilt old GI mags with non hold open followers.
I'm so pleased to see your video explaining the same things I want through. Except I started with all new parts. It took a few adjustments but my rifle runs like a champ.
What puzzles me is how many hate this rifle. I get so many stupid comments about how anemic the round is. And how unreliable the gun is. I was once asked by a buddy at my gun range why I would waste my time on a rifle like this.

@@northernninety7 with decent ammo a .30 carbine is is more than sufficient for most situations. Could it be improved? Over course it could, but it is roughly equivalent to a .357mag rifle. You can easily take deer with .357mag, you could even take a bear/elk/moose with good shot placement (short range headshot would drop them). It has historical proof of its effectiveness against people. Anything under deer sized, except for feral hogs, wouldn’t stand a chance. It’s lightweight, low recoil so anyone could shoot it accurately. It is a great ‘one and done’ rifle if you have one that runs well.
Hope the manufacturer will return this gun in the market. This gun is light and easy to carry, clean and disassemble

Your four part series on the M1 Carbine was one of my favorites. Good or bad, I watched and listened to all the Pros and Cons and try to not get to uptight about what is being said. I mean the gun is a design from 80 years ago. It was designed for personnel protection and was never intended to be a battle rifle.
One take away is the Carbine is and hoot to run.
Why is it that there aren't many personal defense rifles (like the M-1 carbine) that weigh around 5 lbs (and are NOT an AR)? Most rifles are around 7 lbs. and too heavy for many people. My wife is tiny and we live in Massachusetts where ARs are prohibited. It would seem that manufacturers are missing an opportunity to sell to new smaller statured shooters. I'm aware that Keltec makes several light weight weapons; however, I'm really looking for a solidly built rifle that is designed to last (like the M-1 carbine). The Ruger PC carbine would be perfect, except that it weighs almost 7 lbs.
There are a few companies that make new production M1 Carbines
maybe check out the ruger pc carbine charger or whatever the pistol version is called. Its got a short pistol length barrel which might help with the weight.

Great video. The advantage of not having the bolt hold open magazine is that if you have two perps to deal with at close quarters with one round in the chamber and have to deal with one of them, the other perp won’t know your weapon is empty so he most likely will not want to test your resolve!!

@@jon4715 I mean, all guns are quite concussive indoors. Compared to intermediate rifle (5.56mm) or full size rifle (.308)though I'd expect it to be calmer, given it's more of a pistol cartridge.

Got an M1 Carbine (Saginaw) myself and yes, I added a RedDot. Else it was impossible to get any kind of acceptable group out of it.

I used to collect carbine mags so I had a large supply to choose from. I picked 15 mags that would drop out of the mag well just by pressing the mag release and keep these as my main shooter mags. My Winchester carbine is very similar to yours except I run an Aimpoint M4 on it.

I had the privilege of shooting my friends M1 that his grandfather carried in the European theater. I had no issues, what a cool firearm.
Excellent review. Regarding the gas piston nut (aka castle nut), they are often loose in old carbines. In fact, every carbine I have owned, whether GI or commercial, had a loose castle nut. They can be tightened, but they will just come loose again. Applying too much torque to compensate is not going to work and likely will crack your gas block, making the barrel useless. Some folks have tried Loctite with mixed results. Others have used Teflon tape. The proper procedure is to stake them in place. This is what the Army did on all their carbines. There is a right way and a wrong way to stake the nut in place. Do it right, and the nut will not come loose. Do it wrong, and the nut will crack or break. The nuts were never intended to be reused, so if the piston needed cleaning or replacement, the nut was considered a sacrificial part. I have encountered two types of military nuts. Both are three pronged, but the Type 2 (Type II) has a recess in it that traps more gas and allows for a longer piston stroke. Universal later developed a four prong nut. I have never found a four-prong tool and ended up making one to get this nut off of one of their carbines, after which I installed a GI three-prong nut. There are two types of three prong tools. The best one is the multipurpose armorer's tool, but these are rarer than hen's teeth. I've been able to get by using the far more common wrench shown in this video, but it can be a bear when encountering a really tight nut.

I picked up a Universal model that was built with a duel recoil spring from a surplus kit. That thing has had no problem like most other Carbines that i have shot. Glad i got it for $300 because its not valued like the WW2 ones. Good vid!
My Dad, Col William Bournes, nominated for the Medal of Honor for his helicopter rescue missions at the Battle of Cu Chi on October 22,1966, said the M1 carbine was his favorite weapon. Dad knew guns.
Lots of feed issues with mine except with one mag, thought it was a mag issue. Replaced the recoil spring and the old one had compressed by an inch and a half, no issues since then.

Personally I think I'd LOVE a stainless mini30 that's been customized to be a 14.5" pin and weld job, red dot mount, and one of those classic style wood and folding stocks.

I bought a brand new kahr Arms Auto Ordnance m1 out of the box it was great, after a couple hundred rounds I was having bolt follow issues( it became 2 shot burst). I had to warranty it send it back to auto ordnance . Now I have a couple thousand rounds through it and it has run flawlessly not even one malfunction!

I recently got a rescue carbine as well, it came from Louisiana state penitentiary as surplus.
Beat to piss, never cleaned; the second magazine i put through it, the operating slide grenaded.
I tracked down a replacement, some Wolff recoil springs and some KCI mags. So far it's working well, but I need the bolt tool to replace those parts because ejection is currently piss weak.
I'd sell my AR or AK before I got rid of my M1 Carbine.

I can see from the close-ups that you have the M2 style magazine catch, with the tab on the side to engage the third lug on the 30 round mags. If any of you out there want to use the 30 rd. mags, install that style catch if it's not already there! The M1 style only engages the back two lugs, which is all the original 15 rounders had, and will not provide enough support to ensure reliable feeding with the heavier mags. I learned this the hard way. If not for the love of a good woman, and and an energetically scored montage, I would have lost everything.
Purchased my Iver Johnson M1 carbine new in 1987. Ordered it with a +2 inch barrel. Surplus ammo didn't run well so only new ammo since then. 15 round mags work well, none of the 30 round mags have worked very well, whether new, or mil surp. Seems insane to me that some of these sell for
$ 1,000 + -. I have the most fun shooting with this rifle. Still shooting it every few months and about 100+ rounds each time I take it out. Dad carried a M1 Garand during his combat in the Korean War ( USMC) .

my kci magazines were doing the same thing, so all i did was bend the front of the feed lip(where the bullet sits) away from the bullet a bit, and they all feed fine now. i also took the mags apart and oiled the insides and rearranged the springs so they didnt scrunch up and jerk so bad.
I always thought there would be a market for an updated M1 Carbine. But it would have to be done in a way that kept most of the WW II aesthetic. I.e., no bull pup conversion and the like. Or anything that increases the weight beyond what it was originally. Definitely better/more dependable mags, flared mag wells, and an AR style safety.
Israel has. I was super excited. It wasn’t well received. Israel always like the cartridge for its female volunteers
Oh and the later toggle/ rotating safety on the later m1 carbines is my favorite safety of all time. Far superior to an ar

@@overweightowl2295 10mm would work. And maybe 9mm (which was done but not very well by Chiappa if memory serves). I think the look, weight, and balance are key. For example, the Ruger PC carbine is nice but heavy as hell for what it is. For that weight you might as well get an AR.
@@EricDaMAJ The Chiappa 9mm is a blowback action, so it’s not really an M1 Carbine. In 10mm maybe it could be gas operated, and so would not require the bolt mass of a blowback. So far I’ve not found any 10mm gassed carbine made by anyone. Lone Wolf made noises about offering one a few years ago (not an M1) but it never materialized.
