  • Hey guy! this video is to help first-time buyers on what to look for when purchasing an M1 carbine. This video is by far not the most in-depth but rather a quick bit of information to help a buyer from being scammed. If a more in-depth video is something you'd be interested in, let me know, and thanks for watching!

My dad was a pilot in the Air National Guard in 1968 and he had the unfortunate task of flying into the Danang Air Base in Vietnam to bring back the Fallen. One day he came home with a large dry cleaning bag with an M1 carbine stuffed inside and he flew with it back and forth from the US to Vietnam many times...To this day I still have it and treasure it...

About 5 years ago I traded an SKS for a 1943 IBM carbine with matching IBM barrel. I got really lucky on that deal.

I have a few myself and you hit most of the highlights but wanted to add to it . If you see an import stamp on the barrel such as
“Blue Sky Imports” marked on the the barrel it significantly reduces the value of the firearm . If you only want a shooter that’s fine but collectors will shun it and you should not pay the going price for non stamped rifles . Like he said I personally would not pay a premium for a so called as issued rifle because all the parts can be bought and put together . I love WWII Firearms but i shoot all of mine and the main thing for me is they are safe and reliable. Thats not to say that I would buy one I know is a fake original . Same goes with Garand’s .
There are unscrupulous people that will take a mix master and get all the parts with the correct hate codes and drawing numbers and try and tell you it is an untouched original from the factory .
I also laugh at how many “Bring back” stories that are always posted that their dad or grandfather brought back . If all those stories were tru the government would not have had any left over after the war .
I know it happened but not to the extent people are claiming .
My dad was a Korean War vet and wish he had snag one ! Lol

I'm guessing a 1945 inland gm would be considered post war. What would one in fair condition, a little bit of rust in the barrel that should clean out fine be worth?

What about the holes on the top stock cover? Some have two holes and some have four. Also the elevation adjuster wheel seems to vary. Some are narrow while some are wide.

I have an original surplus Saginaw. Unfortunately I got it from rose's as a kid and sanded, stained and clear coated the original finish

Hey Milsurp Man - thanks for the nice video!
This might be a tad off-topic, but related also I think: I've recently picked up my first m1 Carbine! It's a post-war manufacturer (from Plainfield Machine). The mag that came with it, as well as 4 different other makes of mags that I've tried, will not properly seat/latch when inserted. I give them quite a slap, but the 2 little "nibs" (please correct my terminology...) aren't going all the way up into the mag well for the catch to properly engage. Can anyone point me toward what is a fix I can do? A new catch? etc. I CAN send it out, but I would rather try a more economical fix at home if I can.
I think that this is a somewhat common issue, and had I known to check for this first, I might have passed this by. But, I've got it now and would like to make it work as it should.
    Thanks all!

@danieltholejr722 you could definitely try a new catch! If you want to make sure that's thr issue you could try borrowing someone else's carbine and swap the tripper guard to see if there mag catch works as well! It's hard to exactly diagnose the issue without being able to see. You could also post it in "The Military Surplus collector forum on Facebook"
