Here in Japan Byredo Blanche and Lazy Sunday Morning are both actually insanely huge. I noticed that Japanese people tend to lean towards florals and laundry detergent, soapy scents and stay away from fragrances with harsh openings or very strong overpowering fragrances in general. I personally like sweet and musky scents but growing up in the Philippines, most men, my father included, tended to lean towards more of the classic masculine DNA like Ralph Lauren, etc(I think Chanel Egoiste Platinum is the closest in terms of scent profile to what my dad used to wear all the time). It’s so interesting how the preferred fragrances differ in every country. Especially here in Japan where “smell harassment” is an actual thing.😂
I was reading a manga and got very curious when I saw a bottle of Blanche drawn there. And now you acknowledged me that Blanche is a huge thing over there 😊
@@SchoolOfScent So basically a big part of Japanese culture is being mindful of the people around you. And because Japanese people are more sensitive to smell “smell harrassment” is basically making other people feel uncomfortable due to your smell regardless of whether it’s intentional or unintentional. Whether it be an overpowering fragrance or just plain old B.O, they’re both considered smell harassment here. 😂
Japan is known for Zen religion , minimalism & just clean. Laundry scent, Aldehyde, blonde wood light floral are associated with Clean environment i guess?
My first scent was Gypsy water, absolutely stunning. And now I just purchased Bal d'afrique bec it has popular good reviews, I was a bit disappointed by the smell 😅. I'd go back to Gypsy water after I finish this bottle 😭.
Got 4 of byredo fragrances and here are my ratings of them 1. Gypsy water (but terrible longevity) 2. Black saffron 3. Mister marvelous 4. Rose of no man's land Looking forward for bal d'afrique and mojave ghost for the next purchase
Im so tired of great perfumes with poor longevity, I mean, whyyyyyy my matcha the body shop cheap perfume lasts longer than many of my expensive ones! Thanks for the comment on the longevity of the gypsy water!
Bibliotheque smells like a very popular import store from the 1990's, 'Pier One Imports'. The store was filled with scented candles, rattan furniture and cheap leather ottomans and handbags. The combined fragrance was distinctive and addictive. One sniff of Bibliotheque took me back in time to shopping with my mom and auntie at Pier One.
Obsessed with Byredo, not only their perfumes but also their bath products, hand cream, candles. My ranking would be: 1. Mojave Ghost 2. Gypsy Water 3. Blanche 4. Bal D'Afrique
I’ve only tried Bal D’Afrique but to keep its longevity this is what I do once I shower and lotion my body (non scent) spray it on the lotion keeps it only your skin longer and also do 1 spray on your clothing it last all day
I actually did compare both Byredo and Le Labo, I do have a love hate relationship with Le Labo The Noir 29. While walking around Liberty in London, I came across Byredo and went straight to try Rose of No Man’s Land because I love roses. It felt as it was love at first sight hence I went straight to that. But after a few weeks, I ended up getting The Noir 29 too. 😂
I live in sweden so first off let's be clear that none of byredos products are high projectors. Swedes like subtle scents and byredo tends to produce skin scents rather than loud club projectors. Bal d'afrique is great and mojave ghost is nice but I find the performance a bit weak on the latter. My favorite byredo is actually oud immortel. It's fabulous Western style beginner oud that for me is addictive. Price point is a bit high for what you get but boy this smells nice. Omar, give it a sniff!!
Did you notice the reformulation in byredo oud inmmortel? It used to be a beast ,best male perfume I have ever smelled ,but the last 2 bottles we bought smelled completely different to what we used to know ,its now a weak cheap smelling perfume😢😢😢😢
Bought 100ml of the bibliotheque parfum version for 70€ at a stores sample sale. I love it! Also have super cedar, which works great in spring and summer.
I love when you do these buying guide videos. Much appreciation to you. As far as this house, I want to try Bal d’Afrique, Gypsy Water, and Mojave Ghost. Bibliotheque sounds interesting too.
I need to try this house. My favorites to try are Extrait collection (Tobacco Mandarin, Vanilla Antique and Rouge Chaotique) but Bal D’Afrique, Mojave Ghost and Rose of No Man’s Land sound great too.
So Omar, I'm here on my bed watching your videos and I feel so chilled and relaxed. Your better than lavander (which as you know is good before sleeping)
Great to see an overall really good rating on most of their fragrances! A friend recommended Bal d'afrique to me and that's how I got suckered in to the line. No regrets. I'm generally not a lover of clean soapy scents on myself because they usually give me a headache but, the citrus notes in here and the base notes really ground it for me and it's lovely! Inoffensive as well. I have rose of no man's land in hair perfume form but, its such a balanced rose scent. I'm really enjoying it for the spring/summer time. Then you mentioned MFK's a la rose which I also adore. It is def much brighter and cleaner of a rose. I guess, like you said, a greener tone. I figured only recently, I am a sucker for rose scents. 😊 Diptique's rose is also quite nice. Right on point with comparing to Le labo! I also prefer Byredo over Le Labo. It seems more special, kind on the nose, and is a brand that does not try too hard in terms of notes. It just melds well.
Although over priced Rene de nuit is excellent and well balaced it has excellent longevity. Im a bartender and this plays brilliantly with the night life.
I got the discovery box and am in love with Gypsy Water, Mojave Ghost and Rose of No Man’s Land. My primary concern is longevity and projection especially for this price tag. Gonna look some more because these three are amazing. 😊
If I can help out, I recently purchased Mojave ghost after I gave my friend my clone of ghost. My clone was ALT Desert phantom and lemme tell you they’re pretty damn near spot on they both have the same notes but Desert phantom is a little harsh on the opening but after about 6-10 minutes it’s almost an exact clone of Mojave ghost. I’d say check it out before you make the full purchase of Mojave ghost
I have Mojave Ghost and Bal D’Afrique and they’re absolutely incredible. The Mojave has pretty good longevity and projection imo. Unfortunately the Bal D’Afrique does not have the best performance, but the smell is truly a 10/10
Yeah when I requested a tester, Mojave Ghost lasted for days on that little cardboard paper it's my signature fragrance, I like it because it feels fresh yet really present, really illustrates me as a person
Mojave Ghost to me smells extremely feminine, I find it to be reminiscent of any Avon lotion you might've smelled. Bal d'Afrique on the other hand is one of the best niche fragrances I've smelled. Its performance in my experience is a bit lacking but maybe it's just me.
Wow thank for this.. i just ordered a discovery set and its so funny because i wanted to try mojave ghost and u said it smells kinda like D&G the one which is like my fave lol
Bal d' Afrique is lovely, need to spray more though I find the smell kind of becoming skin scent with the floral n chiffon kind of sweetness at the end.. I like to spray it on my pillow, blanket n scarfs it leaves a very comforting n elegant smell
Baldafrique is the type of fragrance you can just spray and lay in. It's so calming almost like a floral, creamy honey woody vanilla. It makes you smile when wearing it. Absolutely love the smell but not the price
because you said you loved Mojave Ghost, I'll get a sample of Bal D'afrique, Rose on no man's land and Gypsy Water.. I just got a sample of Mojave Ghost and I love it so much..
My day wear flips between Bal D'Afrique if I'm wearing something bright and Rose of No Man's land when I'm a bit more styled or wearing darker/green clothes. My night wear jumps between Black Saffron for warm months, then Sellier for colder months. But yeah i don't like to project too much, just enough for someone close to me to get a whiff, without overbearing. I would like to add MFK Grand Soir (gorgeous smell) to add to my nightly rotation and Le Labo Matcha 26/another 13 for the daily.
Absolutely agree about your conclusion, Omar. I have actually come back from Stockholm, to a surprise xDD. During my trip I have stayed in a very lovely suits, where I had Byredo Bal D'Afrique shampoo and other stuff to my disposition. I can tell, the smell of these cosmetics is really beautiful. I am not a fan of this niche house, but if I should choose one perfume for myself, it will be Oud Immortel. A very clean, dry, eloquent perfume, which I quite like. This is not natural Oud based at all, obviously, but a very nicely blended formulation. I have written a review regarding this on Fragrantica. I think, that this is a very nice versatile and quite elegant perfume to wear pretty all year round. I must agree, regarding the beauty and success of Bal D'Afrique line, even that this is not my style.
That’s so cool Daniel, you got the full Byredo experience in holiday form 😆 thanks for sharing! Yes I was intrigued by Oud Immortel but will definitely check it out based on your summary 👌
I bought all 3 discovery sets and now I want to get the new large one but they duplicate at least 60% of the samples!! It's so frustrating when you want to sample the many hundreds of their scents but they only push about 5 or 6. The same scents are in all of the sets. What's the point of that? I wonder if I Can ask them to change the samples out? I already bought many bottles plus makeup. I hope they accommodate me. At first I HATED Biblioteque. I put it in the bathroom to use it up there. But after a week it was all I could think about. It became addicting. I bought a large bottle. I've never had that happen before. Byredo is a strange house. Many of their scents are very odd like you said. For example, Super Cedar is over priced Pine-sol. I can't imagine ever liking that. But despite the weirdness I love them! It's so different. Even though the packaging is generic & many people copy it, I'm, in love with them & want to sample everything. I'd like to discover other designers similar to them. I hate mass produced big brands like all the stuff at Sephora... Burberry etc... It's so common. That flowery old lady perfume is still everywhere.
My neighbor used to have a strong perfume. He would come home and spray it on and head out again. The whole staircase would smell good. I once asked him what it was and it was Byredo Super Cedar. It was expensive at the time and i was broke so i didnt buy it. Seems to be discontinued now
I recently bought a discovery kit- and I’m disappointed in the longevity and scent bubble size for the ones I like- that said I’m giving all the ones I like a chance and see if I think it is worth buying a bottle. Bal D’Afrique, Gypsy Water, and Rose of No Mans Land. Hated Blanche- I had no idea what aldehydes were now I know. I closed my eyes and called it yellow dial scent. Haven’t tried the library scent yet …
After wearing the samples for a month I actually like Blanche as a work scent. My favorite was gypsy water and I only tried the ‘library’ scent once I really didn’t like it. Maybe I’ll try it again in the future because obviously my tastes have changed even over a month here 😂 And my nose and tastes have changed after I have tried more fragrances. I used to be so rose + violet and now i am not sure. I used to mic two perfumes and both are discontinued and I e been chasing that scent I guess I need to move on 😂😂😂 I bought gypsy water it actually reminds me of a very light version of lira with citrus vanilla and wood… obviously not identical by any means but it is also work friendly

I tested Byredo and the house didn’t work at all for me. On my skin they don’t even last a couple of hours. After the first hour they become a skin sent that’s barely detectable. I tried Bal D’Afrique, gypsy water, Mojave ghost and Black Safaron.
I had high hopes for Byredo being swedish myself, but it seems like I´ll have to pass on these, dont like the feminine type of fragrances and im surprised that the longevity is so short because the price is pretty high, i´d rather buy PDM or Xerjoff.

I like Super Cedar from Byredo. But I find this brand overpiriced AF.
Exactly
Bal d'afrique is one of the greatest smells ive ever had the pleasure to smell. Its a jaw dropper.
it's truly amazing. i tried it the other day but i'm not sure how good its performance is. i am not able to smell it after 1-2 hours on my skin

I tested Byredo and the house didn’t work at all for me. On my skin they don’t even last a couple of hours. After the first hour they become a skin sent that’s barely detectable. I tried Bal D’Afrique, gypsy water, Mojave ghost and Black Safaron.
Tobacco Mandarin, delicious 😊
I had high hopes for Byredo being swedish myself, but it seems like I´ll have to pass on these, dont like the feminine type of fragrances and im surprised that the longevity is so short because the price is pretty high, i´d rather buy PDM or Xerjoff.
