Something that really annoys me about the current vocaloid fandom is how much gatekeeping there is. The amount of people complaining about 'new vocaloid fans' is insane. Yeah some new fans are really annoying, but they're also just being introduced to vocaloid. Of course they'd get stuff wrong. Just correct them politely and move on
The stuff about “what’s canon” is so annoying. Most of these characters are designed to be blank slates to be used any way you want. Even things like characters’ official ages don’t necessarily need to be taken as canon, they are literally just voice synthesizers at the end of the day. I mean if you wanted you could headcanon Miku as a 40 year old man, these characters were made for you to depict them any way you want.

One thing about Vocaloid fandom I wish is more common is that fans give credit to the producers of music, not just the voices . The producer worked hard to create the song, do not just say it was made by Miku, someone created it !
I feel like we also get a lot of people taking the "canon" too seriously too. Like ok Miku's mascot is 16. That doesn't mean she is 16 in every. single. song. These are voice banks so they're basically like barbies you can play with and make up stories with. Of course she won't be 16 in every song that uses her voicebank. Ran into someone a few days ago that didn't want people to ship Miku and Teto because Teto is 31. I explained the age joke to them but it was still funny seeing such a comment. Also the thing I hate the most is people not crediting producers but crediting the software or in pjs case, the in game band. Then they get mad when people ask them to credit producers.
A personal pet peeve of mine is when people try and claim a certain vocaloid ship is proship when no vocaloid has a canon age and barely any have canon relationships to each other
I'm an older Vocaloid fan who entered the fandom around 2009/2010, but I've started calling most characters "Voice Synths", "Virtual Idols" or "Virtual Singers". There's so many new synths these days, and many characters are switching programs, so I thought that would be easier. But when I called Miku a Virtual Singer an older fan started bashing me, saying I sounded like an "uneducated Sekai fan". If you wanna continue calling them Vocaloids that's fine, but why do people gotta be so triggered when you're just using another correct term? Even Crypton calls them Virtual Singers now.
Idk, I enter around 2008/2009. Vocaloid just stuck with me. Always called the genre vocaloid. Even the new characters that are t crypton. Some of us old fans consider the whole genre as vocaloid as that’s what we’ve always called them. Voice synths just sounds weird to me and doesn’t roll of the tongue like vocaloid did

This one probably everyone knows, and it's mostly new fans who don't truly understand yet what a vocaloid actually is, but when they credit the songs as "Miku's songs", or "Gumi's songs", disregarding the real composer/producer of the music. There's videos of songs that just say "Hatsune miku - (song name)" and not even in the description you see the producer's name. And some comment says like "crazy that cosMo made this" and no one in the replies knew. I think wowaka, ryo and hachi made lyrics about this issue and is one of the reasons they stopped using vocaloid vocals, because they didn't get the credit, but Miku did It's much better now I think, now everyone knows who Deco*27, PinocchioP, etc are and which songs they made

I hate when people think that pjdv good and pjsk bad or pjsk good and pjdv bad, like COME ON!!! Project Sekai did NOT ruin Vocaloid. In fact, it is getting you into Vocaloid because the humans in the game are your biggest attractions, which made you discover the Cryptonloids (which are supposed to the the main attractions in the game), Gumi, Flower, etc. Project Diva is the same thing, but no humans and just the Cryptonloids, and it is an extra topping to your Vocaloid loving pie that you're baking.
For me, I just got soo sick and tired of everything becoming some sort of drama within the fandom, especially on Twitter. It felt like highschool, and maybe it's me being in my late 20s, but I don't have the patience of care to read a Twitlonger about how this person is a horrible person, or how this song back from 2008 advocates for child abuse because of the themes it talks about. On top of developing a waning interest in voice synth stuff in general in favor of getting back into cars, it got to the point that around 2021/22 or something, I distanced myself away from the fandom. I still have my favourite singers and songs, and I look back fondly on many aspects when part of the fandom for around 10+ years, especially the friends I made. But yeah, there's too many aspects i'd rather not be a part of.

As an old person myself, (late 90's bby), I just watch whoever I want to watch and listen to whoever I want too. Delete tiktok, don't interact with people on twitter (unless it's oomfs), don't interact with anyone that is not your fellow nerd. It's not just the vocaloid fandom that's getting like this but MANY others that relate to anything weeb/anime/games/etc. It's just getting worse with the internet being more accessible.

Wow, so much truth in a few minute video. The truth is, I have distanced myself a lot from the Vocaloid fandom for these same reasons. I still have a lot of affection for these characters and their songs. However, I think it's part of growing up, but I still listen to a lot of the songs on my playlist. I was always embarrassed by the discussions about ships, I also liked some couples, for example Miku and Len, and Meiko and Kaito... but as time went by they were no longer to my liking. Nope, for me Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Meiko and Kaito are a crazy family of virtual singers, that's my headcanon. XD Anyway, you don't have to be so intense when you like something. Welcome to the community. You are valid and as long as you respect producers then you'll be welcomed here. Here's a tip. Find producers to listen to by using pjsk, if you really like one song then look up the producer behind it to find more songs to listen to.

I haven't picked vocaloid back up again until the beginning of this year. Everything, especially the fandom, feels drastically different. I also didn't know much about project Sekai, so that big cast of characters was a shocker to me. I thought they were more vocaloids I just didn't know about. This video just made me realize how different everything was a good long while back. I kinda miss those days where vocaloid was very wacky and fun. Kaito was always the crazy one. I am enjoying a lot of the new official stuff, and a bit of the stuff I missed out on. It's really just the fandom that I'm avoiding.
i hate sounding like a gatekeeping "old fan" (im not even an old fan, i only started getting into vocaloid in like early 2020 just before PJSK came out) but i feel like vocaloid's popularity on tiktok has really not done it any favors. I was shamed for liking Negitoro and KAIMEI for so many years. Literally who tf cares anymore?! Its a computer program. And yea my biggest gripe is when newer fans complain about songs being too dark or too depressing or too smexy. Like dude. Theres so much worse than Rolling Girl, Rabbit Hole, and Goodbye. Thinking Gomenne Gomenne, Adults Toy, hell even Ghost Rule was fucking dark for Deco*27. We also had dystopias like Sand Planet and God Sound. And Knife was a historical tragedy with Rinku and Rinlen. Miku and Len battling it out and Len outright killing her and then Rin killing him, leaving herself completely alone. Literally these songs are so deep. Newer fans act like Vocaloid only got deep after Sekai. I love N25 but kindly stfu. They did not start depression, Nicole. Though i love the accessible way their stories are shown.... old Vocaloid will always go a step further. Sorry if thats fandom purist of me. I grew up on the darker side of the Vocamusic spectrum and played a lot of Diva as a kid :,))

Old fan here, one problem is the save miku campaign era. There used to be soooo many songs on TH-cam a lot from small and big artist too. There was beef with Kpoop kids who started making fake accounts and climbing copyright on all the vocaloid songs. So your issue is going to be that simply, a lot of songs got taken down like 10 years ago and never got re uploaded. Nico nico is going to be your friend for finding vocaloid songs. TH-cam has been a disaster for vocaloid.
Like for real, 60 percent of my vocaloid playlist, that had songs that I had put in the playlist from like 2008/2009 are all private or deleted due to copyright claims now. 😩 shii even songs like love is war and melt originals that were uploaded by ryo himself are completely gone and only the reuploads of alot of really good songs exist now

May be guilty of this. The issue is that they don't really listen.
The stuff about “what’s canon” is so annoying. Most of these characters are designed to be blank slates to be used any way you want. Even things like characters’ official ages don’t necessarily need to be taken as canon, they are literally just voice synthesizers at the end of the day. I mean if you wanted you could headcanon Miku as a 40 year old man, these characters were made for you to depict them any way you want.
Right I personally view the vocaloid characters as ageless unless they are being depicted as a certain age like in a song or drawing

One thing about Vocaloid fandom I wish is more common is that fans give credit to the producers of music, not just the voices . The producer worked hard to create the song, do not just say it was made by Miku, someone created it !

You're so right for this I've been a fan since 2020 and despite knowing alot about vocal synths Miku's my favorite because I love her voice the most out of the nearly hundreds of voices I've listened to, and I'm sure if she wasn't as popular as she is now or way more popular that wouldn't change💙

Being an older Vocaloid fan as well (it hits harder in the idol community), I do agree that funny Vocaloid is dead and replaced with deranged and/or depressed Vocaloid. I'm an older Vocaloid fan who entered the fandom around 2009/2010, but I've started calling most characters "Voice Synths", "Virtual Idols" or "Virtual Singers". There's so many new synths these days, and many characters are switching programs, so I thought that would be easier. But when I called Miku a Virtual Singer an older fan started bashing me, saying I sounded like an "uneducated Sekai fan".
If you wanna continue calling them Vocaloids that's fine, but why do people gotta be so triggered when you're just using another correct term? Even Crypton calls them Virtual Singers now.
Idk, I enter around 2008/2009. Vocaloid just stuck with me. Always called the genre vocaloid. Even the new characters that are t crypton. Some of us old fans consider the whole genre as vocaloid as that’s what we’ve always called them. Voice synths just sounds weird to me and doesn’t roll of the tongue like vocaloid did

There's videos of songs that just say "Hatsune miku - (song name)" and not even in the description you see the producer's name. And some comment says like "crazy that cosMo made this" and no one in the replies knew. I think wowaka, ryo and hachi made lyrics about this issue and is one of the reasons they stopped using vocaloid vocals, because they didn't get the credit, but Miku did

My biggest pet peeve with most people in the new fandom is that...
they don't love Vocaloid
Not because they can't recite the whole vocaloid wiki, but because they actually don't even listen to the Vocaloid versions which speaks for itself. They don't have that feeling we have towards the voice and singing of vocaloids
Specially cause a lot of the "virtual singer versions" are watered down tuning-wise to appease these people
And even when they do, they don't care enough to go look at the lyrics or the meaning even _once_
As if the song hasn't fascinated them
or listen to more vocaloid covers of the same song and be excited about what that sounds like (do they even know that's a thing?)
Not that these are requirements or that there's a checklist, but it's just obvious that for the majority of these people the whole project sekai and "virtual singer" thing is just another one of their temporary gacha games that they'll have forgotten most things about in 4 years

I hate when people think that pjdv good and pjsk bad or pjsk good and pjdv bad, like COME ON!!! Project Sekai did NOT ruin Vocaloid. In fact, it is getting you into Vocaloid because the humans in the game are your biggest attractions, which made you discover the Cryptonloids (which are supposed to the the main attractions in the game), Gumi, Flower, etc. Project Diva is the same thing, but no humans and just the Cryptonloids, and it is an extra topping to your Vocaloid loving pie that you're baking.
For me, I just got soo sick and tired of everything becoming some sort of drama within the fandom, especially on Twitter. It felt like highschool, and maybe it's me being in my late 20s, but I don't have the patience of care to read a Twitlonger about how this person is a horrible person, or how this song back from 2008 advocates for child abuse because of the themes it talks about. On top of developing a waning interest in voice synth stuff in general in favor of getting back into cars, it got to the point that around 2021/22 or something, I distanced myself away from the fandom.
I still have my favourite singers and songs, and I look back fondly on many aspects when part of the fandom for around 10+ years, especially the friends I made. But yeah, there's too many aspects i'd rather not be a part of.

Wow, so much truth in a few minute video. The truth is, I have distanced myself a lot from the Vocaloid fandom for these same reasons.
I still have a lot of affection for these characters and their songs. However, I think it's part of growing up, but I still listen to a lot of the songs on my playlist. I was always embarrassed by the discussions about ships, I also liked some couples, for example Miku and Len, and Meiko and Kaito... but as time went by they were no longer to my liking. Nope, for me Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Meiko and Kaito are a crazy family of virtual singers, that's my headcanon. XD

The first vocaloid song I ever heard was candle queen, I haven't really listened to any other songs and I've started playing pjsk, it's a nice start but I feel like I'm not a valid vocaloid fan because of that 😭😭😭

Here's a tip. Find producers to listen to by using pjsk, if you really like one song then look up the producer behind it to find more songs to listen to.

I haven't picked vocaloid back up again until the beginning of this year.
Everything, especially the fandom, feels drastically different. I also didn't know much about project Sekai, so that big cast of characters was a shocker to me. I thought they were more vocaloids I just didn't know about.
This video just made me realize how different everything was a good long while back. I kinda miss those days where vocaloid was very wacky and fun. Kaito was always the crazy one.
I am enjoying a lot of the new official stuff, and a bit of the stuff I missed out on. It's really just the fandom that I'm avoiding.

i hate sounding like a gatekeeping "old fan" (im not even an old fan, i only started getting into vocaloid in like early 2020 just before PJSK came out) but i feel like vocaloid's popularity on tiktok has really not done it any favors. Most aren't this way but a lot of pjsk players are like these super chronically online gen alphas who are always whining about things being "problematic" or not the "canon". i'm glad the fandom is getting passed on to a younger audience (who hopefully won't make freaky ass borderline p3do songs with len) but I don't understand why they can't just chill out and enjoy the music ;-; plus i cant help but be mildly infuriated when people call the pjsk characters vocaloids or call the songs pjsk songs

I was shamed for liking Negitoro and KAIMEI for so many years. Literally who tf cares anymore?! Its a computer program. And yea my biggest gripe is when newer fans complain about songs being too dark or too depressing or too smexy.

Thinking Gomenne Gomenne, Adults Toy, hell even Ghost Rule was fucking dark for Deco*27. We also had dystopias like Sand Planet and God Sound. And Knife was a historical tragedy with Rinku and Rinlen. Miku and Len battling it out and Len outright killing her and then Rin killing him, leaving herself completely alone.
Literally these songs are so deep. Newer fans act like Vocaloid only got deep after Sekai. I love N25 but kindly stfu. They did not start depression, Nicole.
Though i love the accessible way their stories are shown.... old Vocaloid will always go a step further.

Okay, before anyone come for me, I just want to say I don't hate new gen Vocaloid fans or PJSK, but it irritates me so much when I try to find old vocaloids songs but what I found is PJSK characters cover. Like??? I dont know if you can understand this, but I want to hear the ORIGINAL one.. (Happened in youtube and spotify)
Old fan here, one problem is the save miku campaign era. There used to be soooo many songs on TH-cam a lot from small and big artist too. There was beef with Kpoop kids who started making fake accounts and climbing copyright on all the vocaloid songs. So your issue is going to be that simply, a lot of songs got taken down like 10 years ago and never got re uploaded. Nico nico is going to be your friend for finding vocaloid songs. TH-cam has been a disaster for vocaloid.
Like for real, 60 percent of my vocaloid playlist, that had songs that I had put in the playlist from like 2008/2009 are all private or deleted due to copyright claims now. 😩 shii even songs like love is war and melt originals that were uploaded by ryo himself are completely gone and only the reuploads of alot of really good songs exist now

What really bugs me is when new fans try to act like they know everything. I can’t count the number of times new fans have tried to correct someone and were just wrong 😭 and they’re always so passive aggressive with it too like please sit down and chill out
I remember all the MMD jokes when I was a kid, and I’ve got to say I prefer how Kaito is portrayed now. Back then it seemed like every male vocaloid was portrayed as this huge pervert. Sometimes the jokes got so disturbing that it left me feeling uncomfortable. I’m not saying the jokes were all like that, but it gets old when every male character is like that.
Also who the heck thinks Kaito is a teenager? 😐
