I Built The Best Segment Stop I Have Ever Used Wood Turning

- I made myself a segment stop.
I did not invent the mouse trap. Most segment stops work in the say way.
This is based on other tools I have used and other jigs I have made over the years.
The measuring section is based on something my milling machine had on it
It was also a stop for cutting things to length. So these things date back well over 100 years ago.
!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!!
Had surgery yesterday, Ankle has two . I will wear a splint for 2 weeks. Then a support boot and maybe one of those cool scooters to race around on LOL. I had a block at the angle so feel nothing and this will last for a24-36 hours. Then the pain will be back and I will take a strong pain medicine.. My comments may not be much but I will acknowledge all of them. Best I can do for now. Thanks so much, Gary
I so sorry to hear about your injury Gary. I hope all goes well and take your time to recover fully. Thinking of you.
Steve.
Thanks so much Steve. Doing ok will just take time before I can stand on it.
I appreciate your concerns.
Gary
The 90 degree adjustable stops with the measurement guide are a lot more accurate with smaller angle cuts. However you will notice a discrepancy between your set SEL length and the actual SEL length at large angles. The actual SEL lengths will always be larger than the measurement of the gap in the gauge. Simply geometry. It typically isn’t a major problem but I was scratching my head for a while trying to figure out why they were different when I first made mine.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks Rick. Yes they will be off a little. What I did was pulled the stop away from the blade a given amount. So it would cut a known length along the the segment.
I then set the opening on the jig to 1" The blade will not measure that in a straight line from the stop but it still cuts the 1 inch needed.
This should work on all the segments that are cut lets say for 18 segments per ring.
So the stop is really a little closer to the blade than 1 inch.
At least it worked that way for me.
Aww bummer!!! Really going to miss you !! 🙏 Glad you have family close. I hope the Lord speeds your healing and that you don’t drive your wife crazy getting back on your feet. Happy New Year!
Thank you very much Barry. When I woke up this morning it felt like the Lord helped me out. Hardly any pain.
My wife is a trooper for sure.
I have system where I go from my computer chair to a roller around thing with 6 wheels. If I want to got the the family room a walker helps me down the one step.
Happy New Year to you as well.
Gary
Love what you do,except for falling. I replaced a knee in Oct 2022 and it is great. Work your PT, ice and anti inflammatories are your friends. See ya around!
Thank you Mickey. I am pretty good at falling. The landing part needs some help LOL.
Gary
Hi Gary I am very sorry to hear of your fall and injury. Take care and see you soon
Thank you very much Dave.
You take care as well my friend,
Gary
Gary, sorry to hear about the mishap in the shop. Wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery. Cheers
Thank you kindly Phil
Gary,
Firstly, get yourself taken care of! I wish you a speedy recovery so that you’re able to enjoy what you do so well!
Secondly, your videos continue to educate us and improve our skills. I’m anticipating the Woodturner Pro and TinkerCad videos.
I applaud your dedication completing this video and look forward to building this tool.
Thank you very much Skip. Doing the up coming video will help me as much as anyone.
Really looking forward to showing you some magic in TinkerCad. Well it will look like it.
I wanted so bad to be where I could open and close the fixture but it just did not work here. No easy way to setup the camera.
Thank you so much.
Gary
Get well soon Gary! The pleasures of getting older eh? Still much better than not getting older though! Nicely made segment stop by the way.
Yes that is a fact. I think last year I would have bounced up and kept on going LOL
It was the twist that did it in.
Happy you liked the segment stop!
Gary
Gary, I am so sorry to hear about your accident. Good luck with the surgery and hope you bounce right back! I love the Tinkercad content too.
Thanks so much Lee. If only I would have bounced when I landed LOL.
Surgery was a week ago and I think it is feeling better.
I have a TinkerCad video lined up to show. Maybe after I do the WoodTurnerPro one.
Thanks,
Gary
Well, 2023 can just die, already. I'm sorry about your injury, Gary. I'm planning to email you & Gord, soon. Maybe that'll keep your mind in the game, but, as you said, you'll find some way to stay involved. Best wishes on surgery & recovery. Really impressed with the precision of your jig, as well.
Thank you so much Jay for your comments and concerns with my injury.
Gary
O NO ur poor soul. 6 weeks is long time hopefully u recover completely. best to rest it first then back to woo turning. god bless.
Thanks Manjit. I appreciate your comments and concens.
Gary
Good luck and God's speed on a full and complete recovery
Thank you very much John. Hoping to get back to church soon. i play guitar in the choir and sure miss that.
Thanks again,
Gary
ooh! been there, done that! you heal at your own pace... i would love to see design software tutorials!
Thank you very much. Seems the older we get we end up doing the things we have not done before. OUCH
Software design videos on the way!
Gary
Thanks for the updates, both the jig and your injuries. I understand the pain you're going through. I had to have reconstruction of my ankle for torn ligaments, which led me to have a knee replacement. The worst part was not being able to drive because of the boot on my right ankle during recovery. Take care, and I look forward to seeing your more technical videos.
Thank you very much Douglas. Mine is my right foot as well.
I will be making those technical videos soon.
Gary
Thanks! Glad you're better, although I wouldn't go dancing just yet.
Thanks Harry. Going to pass on the trampoline as well 😀.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Probably a good time of the year to stay warm inside and catch up on all those things we all have been planning to do.
Get well ,stay safe and warm. 🙏 4u
Dennis
Thank you Dennis. So true it is starting to get cold. I was looking forward to a little heating system in the shop but that will have to wait.
Gary
Hi Gary,
I just watched the video for about the third time and managed to catch some of the key words that you said (i guess im a little slow in the hearing department) and found the miter slot parts of which you spoke. For about $20.00 I got 2 sets of parts. Thanks, now I've got another project after I finish my saw mill sled for ripping logs into planks. Your jig that you did for cutting your wafers is my foundation for this project. I will post pictures on Facebook when done. Thanks for your investment of time for making these videos and hope that leg is healing well.
Thanks Tim. Sounds like the same ones I got. And sounds like you are stocking up on sleds. Can never have enough 🤪
Seeing the doctor this week.
Hopefully I can start putting weight on it.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 well, this sled I'm working on is my first for this bandsaw. I bought a Rikon 14" about 6 month ago and have been having health issues. Had a nice vacation in the Kaiser Hilton which gave me time to think through some of the fine points. Now to start making notes.
@@timrauscher3965 sorry about your health issues. Hope you are doing well now.
@ThePapa1947 well, I do have some health, but this time I think that it was some wood that I turned that had some bad mold causing me to have some resperatory issues. May be that could be a video by you, if knowledgeable in that area. I think Gord Rock may be , however he has cancer and is having problems with his chemotherapy.
Gary, I’ll watch whatever you put out. Your how to videos always fascinate me. Take it cool for a bit though and get the healing under way. Going out with a bang in 23 has to mean 2024 will be great!! Get better and all the best in the new year 🎉. Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. My wife has been amazing.
I am in my computer/guitar room in front of the computer. Foot still has a block and not hurting.
Cat came in and jumped up on the cat bed. When do reading comments I plan on grabbing my little Steinberger 🎸 and put the head phones on a play bit.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 now that sounds like a great recovery program!! Playing songs or just noodling is one of my favourite ways to relax and chill out. So glad you have a partner who is able and willing to help in circumstances like this. A big hats off to her!!
Gary, I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune but I'm glad you're ok! I enjoy the videos you make regardless of whether they're about turning or not. I am not a patient jig maker. I am always in a hurry to make what I'm making that creating a jig to make that thing is an unwanted delay but they do come in handy. One of the things I noticed in this video is that it looks like you modified your table saw insert to make it a zero clearance one. That might need further explaining. :) Anyway, please take care of YOURSELF and don't worry about your followers! We'll be here! Hopefully, you will still have a happy new year!! Just no dancing at midnight on New Year's Eve! Rick
Thank you Rick. And thanks for your best wishes.
So that jig has a 45 degree ramp added to allow the pieces to slide away from the blade.
Works good but like with all spinning things you want to keep an eye on them building up. I love making jigs and plan them out on paper of my CAD program most of the time. I love doing that as well.
When you make the jig every this is clear it it is a matter of cutting the pieces out.
Gary
Good luck with the surgery ... looking forward to you being back in the shop!
Thanks Gerald!
Hope you have a speedy recovery
Great job. Get well soon.
Thank you Walt. I will do my best to follow the doctors orders. She is a good one!
Thanks,
Gary
Get well soon, I'll still be looking forward to your videos
Thank you very much!
Hi Gary...
So sorry to hear about your fall...
It's a good job that you have your family around...
I hope for a successful operation and a speedy recovery...and that the 6 weeks go quickly...
I had a very similar accident so I feel for you...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thanks so much Andy. Finding ways to get around so that is good.
I try not to feel sorry for myself. When I think about my friends I served with this this is a short thing I have to go through.
Thanks for your best wishes.
Gary
Gary: Sorry to hear about the accident. Take care and heal up. We will all be here for you when you get back to your lathe.
Thank you very much James. Meanwhile I will have other things to show.
Thanks!
Gary
Gary, im sorry to hear this. You’re in my thoughts and prayers. I understand your pain and frustration. Throughout the years ive had both of my hip’s replaced and ive had extensive spine surgery. There’s a lot of hardware in my body. Please, take care of yourself and I will always support you and watch your videos. Please let us know how your surgery goes. Much, much respect. Keith…
Thanks so much Keith. Hospitals have become the auto parts store for us.
Thank God that doctors have advanced in the knowledge and skills and the equipment to do all of this.
Surgery well great. Seems like it only too 10 seconds I was aware of LOL
I will be around and hope to see you soon on my next video.
Gary
That’s a great jig Gary! My thoughts and prayers are with you and hope for a speedy recovery. Keep your mind sharp during the recovery period!
Thank you very much. I will keep active with designs I will make when I get back on my feet. Right now it is on one foot.
Thank you for your prayers...much appreciated.
Gary
Very interesting Gary this is good to know stuff I pray your surgery goes great and a speedy recovery 🙏🙏
Thanks so much Tim!
Thank you for your videos I have woodturner pro and don’t know how to use it
Thank you John. Well next week maybe you will be able to get started with it. I will have something ready then.
Gary
Praying for you to have a quick recovery. My husband and I enjoy all of your videos.
Thank you very much Patty for your prayers.
I will have things to watch while I sit and sit and wait and wait LOL
Thanks again,
Gary
Thank You Gary. ... Geee Gary quite a thing you are having to go through in the next 6 weeks. You are very fortunate to have a good/positive support group ( family ) around you in this time. Family is everything!!! I hope and will look forward to your hopeful swift recovery.
Until your next video Gary I will be waiting and watching. Please Take Care.... TM
Get well soon Garry. Fractures heal up well enough, ligaments take longer, so take your time.
Thanks Kevin. Yes I had a shoulder enjoy over 35 years ago. Doctor told me a break would have been better.
Hope the fact they fixed the gap with pins it may not be as stressful on them.
Who knows I am just someone who makes sawdust LOL
Great detail on the segment stop. It will certainly be easy to make one. Here is wishing you a rapid recovery. Looking forward to your Woodturner Pro tips. I am certain they will not be boring. But don't feel you have to make any kind of a deadline. Taking care of yourself will be first on your to do list. Anything we get during your recovery will be gravy. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Glen. It will be jig that segment turners will love once they have one.
I will enjoy doing the WTP videos and also some TinkerCad stuff.
Love them both.
I will not rush myself but I can not sit still. All of this is good therapy for me.
Thanks,
Gary
This was a great instructional video, Gary. There will be many of the "stops" made in the next little while, I'm sure.
So very sorry to hear about your injury, my friend. I knew something was wrong from the email Jay sent to us last night but never got to see the video until now. I wish you a speedy recovery, buddy. I'm sorry about the pain you are going to be in. I do hope the pain medicine works well for you.
Anything you want to teach us will be appreciated so learning Woodturner Pro will be welcome. I purchased it but have never learned to use it. I found that I quite enjoy drawing the designs on paper. Maybe you can change my mind.
Happy New Year to you and Laverna, 🥂🥂🥂
.....Gord
Thank you very much Gord.
It was really painful but after the surgery it has not been so bad. I thinking putting those pins in there helped a lot.
A very Happy New Year to you and Gail as well.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Wow, so sorry to hear about your accident. I hope all goes well with the surgery and recovery. Get will quick and I’ll keep watching even if it is just a 3D printing video or some TinkerCad stuff :) I just so happen to be printing some Drag Chain components for my Laser Engraver! Thanks for the great video on the Segmented Stop Block. I’ll be making one for sure! Sizing the pieces has always been somewhat of a guessing game for me so this should help quite a bit! Thanks again, take care, and happy New Year!
Thanks so much Michael. I think you will love the stop block.
Drag chain parts Now that is cool!
Surgery is done on Thursday and so far it is feeling much better.
Thank you for your best wishes on this.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Hey Gary, I hope the healing process is going well. I just watched this video again and didn’t recall seeing it until I saw my comment here LOL. It’s tough getting old! UGH… I haven’t got around to making the Segment Stop yet but watching this again has got me re-energized. I did get my Drag Chain all finished and installed and it works great! Take care and keep up to great work!
@@michaelmathews8974 Thank you. I am getting there. Going from air cast to a ankle brace. Finding the right pair of shoes to fit all that in is not easy. I have very wide feet.
Hope to see you soon from my lathe.
Gary
So sorry to hear of your injuries. Should be no problem for you, just design a hover board to move around the shop. ;-D Just kidding Gary, Take care of yourself and get well soon. I'm sure your videos will still be very interesting. I will watch and hopefully learn a thing or two.
I don't do very much segmenting, but this stop might be my next project.
A Happy New Year to you and yours.
Thanks Gil. You should see my transportation system here.
I get out of bed. Use a walker to get to the doorway. Sit on a round 6 legged stool to get to the next place and so on. I like the hoover board.
Gary
Hope you recover quickly. Ankles and feet take a lot of abuse and require extra care for healing. My wife had foot surgery back in April and had to keep all weight off for 8 weeks then she transitioned to a cast and then a boot. Scooters are the way to go. Question about segment length. It appears that you are measuring the distance parallel to the blade but the wedgie sled holds the wood at an angle. I’m not a math wizard but I would think that the segment length would be longer in reality versus the straight measurement. Get well soon. Your videos are always enjoyable
Thank you Greg. Yes it will take some time for sure. My doctor says 6 weeks off of it. Have to see how it goes.
As far as how the segment lengths work. The first cut is an angle and when you move the strip to the other fence it is place on the complement angle. The cut is measure along that angle and will match what the stop block is set at.
It is simply sliding that distance till it hits the block.
Hope that makes sense.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks for the reply. After watching the video again, I see what you did but I don’t understand why it works. The diagonal distance is different than a straight line measurement. I’ll have to test this on my wedgie sled and stop block.
Maybe the fact that when setting up the sliding stop it is taking in the slight difference along the angle.
I just figured out that on that angle there is .015 difference than the straight line in 1 inch.
I checked out my wedgie sled while building a bowl and found the difference to be about 5% which is much more than I would have expected. It's probably insignificant in the long run unless you are making large segment count vessels like I do occasionally using an indexing system. @@ThePapa1947
Take time to mend Gary.
Thanks David. Will do!
Gary
Gary,
I wish you well in your recovery. Your detailed, step-by-step tutorials are much appreciated. I have learned so much from your down to earth approach and easy to understand instructions, whether it is building jigs or creating a new turning. I love doing segmented work and have used your designs and concepts for a number of bowls. I also use Segmented Pro (from the Woodturner Pro folks) for creating many of the bowls and vessels I have made. I have also made a stop jig for sawing segments, but I love your design and can't wait to make it myself. Take care and hope you get back into the shop soon.
Thank you very much Bruce. I bought the whole package from WTP so have access to all of them.
Segment Pro is a great program but I like the freedom that WTP gives me. I can make more changes for different things. Mostly being able to mix ring thickness.
Happy you enjoy my videos and will be back to turning soon. Hoping no more than a month but will listen to the doctor.
Thanks for our wishes on the recovery.
Gary
I've just replied to your email from last week, Gary. Then, I got a text from Tuffy telling me he saw your video this morning and your explanation. I will watch the whole video but as you might imagine, I skipped right to your explanation, first thing. I'm glad you've had the surgery and got that part over with. Now the healing begins. Sounds like it is going to take awhile and be painful. For that, I'm truly sorry. I will be praying for you, my friend. As everyone is saying, just take your time to get it right, we'll be here each week for whatever you have to share. Best wishes, buddy.
Phil
Thank you very much Phil,
You know that old saying: We do not bounce like we used to! It is true so true. I have bounced many times over the years without breaking a bone. Except for one that I try and forget.
For sure I will take my time. My nurse(Laverna is finally resting...she has worked very hard taking care of me.
This will drive me crazy not being able to turn. But I do like designing on the computer.
Thanks for your prayers my friend they mean a lot to me.
The block is slowly wearing off and will have to take the pain pills which I hate. But need
Gary
Gary. Thanks for all of your time you spend sharing your talent. It is gratefully appreciated Your jig is a great addition to any shop, and it is very well explained. Take care and see you very soon
Thank you Dave!
Hi Gary. Great video on the jig. I have used a similar one but will be making yours. Best wishes on healing. I really look forward to your videos on using Segment Pro. I have the software and look forward to all the shortcuts that you have figured out. Heal quickly.
Thank you very much Van. I hope I will be able to show the easy parts of the software. I will start out with something very basic.
Thanks my friend,
Gary
Oh man, so sorry for the accident you had 😐 wish you a speedy recovery to 100%
Thank you very much.
I appreciate your comments.
Gary
Get well, my friend. Personally.... Seeing more 3D printing applications for Woodturning would be the "jam on my biscuit"!! Bring it on!! I just helped our school woodshop guy turn a replacement spinner handle for the table saw. I made 2 PLA bushings with 7mm bore. Printed a ⅜" OD on the inner shoulder and a ½" OD on the outer shoulder. Used 100% infill to fight the compression and heat from friction. We used a standard 7mm pen turning mandrel to do the turning and the finishing. Our Sawstop now has a stabilized walnut handle with 10 coats of WaterLox... Almost student proof!!
Get well, Gary
Thank you very much Dave! You have given me some wonderful ideas for 3D printing. I have some missing handles and things. And I sure do love the 3D printer.
I remember when the pattern shop I worked at first got into rapid proto type they got an LOM machinel
Hired a young engineer(not mechanical) to set things up. I ended up designing the first part made on it.
A working crescent wrench. Just so they could try it out. Did a bunch of other parts as well.
They went on to get 3D printers and not sure what they have down there now.
I had nothing to do with those printers though.
I preferred building patterns from drawings.
But as you know I do love the technical stuff as well.
Thanks my friend,
Gary
Great video on the jig Gary. I will keep this in mind when I get the table saw.
Not good news on your injuries from the accident. Being stuck with your leg elevated all day is no fun, I have been down that road a few times myself. I wish for you a fast and full recovery.
Regards Jon
Thank you Jon. Even though we make round things on the lathe a table saw sure can help in the process if you do segment turning as well.
Hoping it goes on the schedule the doctor gave me. But only time will tell.
Thanks,
Gary
Hope you soon recover Gary, that is a cool segment stop mate ...great job . I'll catch up with you in the spring as I have a lot of hospital appointments coming up starting in a few days time Take care mate and no bouncing around for a while , Bram
Thanks Bram. I promise no bouncing around. Found out I do not bounce so well.
You take good care of yourself my friend.
Gary
Praying for quick and complete healing after your surgery brother. Some software videos would be great!
Thank you very much Chris your prayers are welcome and I feel them all.
For sure there will be some software videos coming. As you know I do love my software.
Thanks again,
Gary
Cool stop and awesome explanation, Gary. 😊😊 take care of yourself and ask for help if you need it. 😊😊 see you soon.
Maria thank you very much
Glad you’re going to be ok. I shattered my heel in Jan 2021 and was non-weight bearing for 14 weeks. This was less than 3 months after buying my first big boy lathe. It was devastating. I ended up getting an I-Walk (kind of a peg-leg replacement from the knee down) after going crazy for 4-5 weeks that gave me enough mobility to return to the shop. I was procuring log pieces and cutting them up with a chainsaw. Probably not the smartest thing, but I was being careful. The I-Walk looks funny and feels dangerous to start, but in the 9-10 weeks I used it, I only came close to falling one time n the living room. That was because I let my guard down in a familiar environment and stumbled on a kid’s toy.
Good luck in the surgery and have a speedy recovery.
Thank you for your comments. The I-Walk looks like it works but I think I will try and avoid it. I have trouble with crotches.
Gary
Thank you for the most excellent tutorial on sled building ! I sure wish I still had a table saw . We are so sorry you injured yourself Gary . We will Pray for a speedy recovery . HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE !!
Thank you Jon and thank you for your prayers.
Happy New Year to you and yours.
Gary
Gary,
Thank you for the segment jig video. Hope you heal fast and well. The videos on segmenter pro would be a great help to me for sure, as I am struggling with design and computers. You make some incredible projects and Ì hope you are back at the lathe before you get bored (probably won't happen) will be looking for your next video on Friday. Take care and Thank you.
Glenn
Thanks so much Glenn. Just sitting around gets me bored. So designing anything keeps me thinking. Plus there is a 3D printer behind me and I do have ideas to use that in a few videos.
Gary
Gosh, so sorry to hear about your accident Gary. I would be very interested in watching some design video's with WTP as I recently purchased that software and am just about finished my first project (currently sanded up to 180 so very soon done!). Wish you the best for the surgery and also for a speedy recovery. Take care, Ted M
Thanks so much Ted. There will be a video next week on WTP!
Thanks again,
Gary
Hi Gary. Hope all goes well with your recovery. I regularly watch your videos and very much enjoy your approach and style. I've "borrowed" a number of your methods and find them very helpful.
As it turns out I built a similar stop jig just a couple of weeks ago because I started open segmented turning and need the increased accuracy. I had been using a segmenting sled with an adjustable stop but it worked by hand measuring the stop placement. OK for some things but not great if you need very accurate pieces. Too bad the timing was off because your version is a bit better than the one I build. May have to rebuild it.
Thank you Randy. Feeling better and it has only been 3 days since surgery.
I based mine off the table on my Jet milling machine. It had two adjustable stops and one fixed. You could have your work clamped and place the stop for repeated cuts. Also two places for it to slide like a milling machine has.
Pretty much the same idea. Which has been around for a long long time. I think the 1818 or longer.
Funny I have books they gave me as an apprentice Patternmaker that showed machines that old. No I was not born when they were printed. LOL
First, So sad for your fall and the parts of the body that are broken, pulled loose and the surgery. I can hear it in your voice at the very end, you do not like setting in the house and not making your weekly video's. I plan on building the Segment Stop jig and since I have a CNC I plan to build part of it on there. I really enjoy your work and have tried and built several of you items. Would you consider printing your drawings on 8.5 by 11, in a PDF file for all of us to print. Just a thought since you have them drawn up anyway. Stay in and warm.
Thank you very much Larry. You are right I do not do very well just sitting around.
I am willing to make drawings of the Segment Stop. The beauty of this is those dimensions can vary based on stock on hand.
But I always like to have good plans to begin with. I will work on it...nothing much else to do right now LOL.
I will let everyone know when I get them done. I think I still have a "drop box" setup.
Gary
First off, get well soon. My goal for this year is to make some segmented bowls (open and closed). The timing of this video was perfect as I have plans for the sled to build, now thanks to you I have the stop. I will be going with the CNC and 3D printed method as I have those tools in my shop. But I loved how you showed it could be made without them.
I have always admired your work and love watching your videos. Many others are too short to be informational, and others seem too long where it is difficult to remain focused (at least for me).
Having a 3D printer, I look forward to some of your videos on 3D printed accessories. Thanks for all you do for this hobby.
Thank you very much Robert. Being busy with something is my best medicine. So showing 3D modeling and segment software will help a lot.
Having CNC is really nice and I love the 3D printer as well.
Happy you enjoy my videos and will be back to wood turning as soon as I get the OK.
Thank you,
Gary
Most accidents happen either in the house or around it. Too bad it happened to you this time.
Get well soon Gary! 😎
Thanks Leo. Most accidents are preventable. I guess I missed the part where it says if you are caring something that blocks your view you will not be able to see the small and only object that you are about to step on.
BIGGER PRINT PLEASE LOL
Gary, I’m sorry to hear about your accident, those are rough injuries. Waiting on torn achilles surgery myself. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Looking forward to your ‘in rehab’ videos. Learning from I best clean my shop up a bit.
Thank you very much Ian. Seems like we all are banging ourselves up a bit.
Crazy thing is I had cleaned that area up so I could get the dust bin out. Seems there was a small dowel there and I stepped on it. Crash bang boom I went.
Thanks for your best wishes and good luck to you.
Gary
Sorry to hear about the injury. Having had the same injury (although in my mid 20's due to sports), I can assure you it'll heal up just fine. I also went the pins in the ankle route. Of course, I look forward to any expertise you impart whether you're turning or not. Take it easy.
Thank you very much David. I appreciate your comments on how well the pins worked for you.
I wonder if the fact I act and think I am still in my 20's will help LOL.....
Thanks again,
Gary
Praying that you heal up quickly. Found your channel about a week ago. You do beautiful work. I have all the jig videos tagged so I can go back and make the jigs. Looking forward to attempting some of the projects that you have done. Blessings
Thank you very much John. Your prayers are much appreciated.
Let me know how you jig build goes and if you have questions feel free to ask.
Gary
Oh well, life happens. Doesn't matter what you post online, just get yourself better. But I will definitely watch your posts. I may have to make me another segment cutting jig. Get well soon!!
Thanks so much Harry. I am hoping what I will do will be helpful for many. I know just making them will help me.
Thanks so much for your comments.
Gary
Gary, I love the Segment Stop design and plan to make it because I'm always looking for one that really works. I'm so sorry about your leg and hope your healing is relatively pain free. I'm looking forward to the videos on Woodturner Pro because I could use some good instruction on using all its parts.
Thank you Carol. This morning it actually does not feel too bad. I did take a pain killer before going to bed and have taken one this morning to try and keep it controlled. They have me on 1/2 of a pill so I can take them closer together if I need them. I do not like taking them but a half is not like the whole thing. Too strong!!
Woodturner Pro it is and will have one ready for sure.
Thanks for your concerns,
Gary
Gary, hope your recovery is going well. Thanks for the video on the seg. stop you made. I have been looking for that works as I have been measuring my seg's the same way did prior to making this one. I am also out of the shop as I fractured the middle finger on my left hand and dinged my index finger on the same hand. So I have a couple weeks to watch video's, I specially like your videos as you do a wonderful job of explaining each step. I am also wondering where you purchased your short miter slot rail? I have time to gather parts and watch more of your videos, looking forward to your woodturner pro videos.. Thanks again and speedy recovery. Ron
Thank you Ron.
Sounds like you are in the same situation. Sure not fun
This is what I bought. Like I mentioned you need to keep the ends from turning.

Man that is some bad luck! So sorry to hear about that. In the past ~2years I broke my femur mountain biking and my hand using a power drill. Now I have a bunch of titanium in my leg and I had some pins in my hand for about 2 months. Make sure you work as hard on your post-operative physical therapy as you do on your turning and videos and you’ll be fine. I hope all goes well and you have a speedy recovery. I’ll be watching! I really want to try some segmented turning so I’m definitely going to use your jigs.
Thanks Jim! Hope the jig works out for you.
Gary
That was interesting vid, not so sure bout the ending, heee lordy, i was going to wish you and yours Happy New Year don't know whether i dare now oh i have done. Well Gary hope all goes well with hope fingers crossed 6 weeks will pass with no problems. All the very best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you very much. We have been very lay back on New Years for some time now. Most of the time we do not make it to Midnight before falling asleep. Still have a bottle of champagne left from our 50th back in May 0f 2022. But not with the pain pills I am taking.. Maybe some plain old eggnog.
Thanks my friend,
Gary
Gary, bummer! I know you will recover well and be back at it before long! Certainly enjoyed and learned from this video and look forward to your upcoming ones. Stay safe and be well!
Thank you so much. It is a matter of time and me staying off that foot. The wife and I have worked as a team to get me up to use the walker and then a rolling chair.
I look forward to showing some simple designs.
Gary
Hi Gary
So sorry to hear about your accident, get well soon.
What a great jig, I'll be making one for myself. Take care and a happy new year to you and your family.
Thanks Jim. I can't wait to use my jig again.
Let me know how yours works out.
Happy New Year to you and yours as well.
Gary

Thanks Joe. When my son was over the day after all he could find was a small metal dowel.
Gary
Hi Gary,,
Thanks for sharing how to make the stop.
That's really sad news about your knee and ankle and I hope the surgery goes well and that you heal soon and fast.
Not a good way to bring in the New Year, but happy New Year and God bless all of you
Thanks Thomas. Had the surgery the day I posted this video. Doing better than I expected based on how it was before the surgery.
Blessings to you as well.
Gary
Wow sorry to hear about the accident Gary. I have never met you. BUT the way I see you carry yourself you will not stay idle for long. You are a very motivated person. Happy New Year to you and your family. I will always be watching. At least for the first week. Listen to the doctor
Thank you Albert,
Well I have always had something going on. I can not sit for long and it is hard for me to sit and read a book. Guess I have time now.
Oh for sure I will listen to the doctor.
Thank you for your concern,
Gary
I’ve gotten way behind on watching your videos Gary, I sure hope your surgery went well. I am sending prayers healing and good results with pt when you get to that point. I look forward to the videos you’re able to put out. Best of luck to you sir.
Thanks Dale. Must of missed this. Been hard getting around but doing better thank you.
Gary

Surgery went well thanks.

Gary
Gary, so sorry to hear about your accident. Rest up do the physio. We'll keep watching your excellent videos.
Thank you Michael. That is the plan. Sure seems like a long time for me not to use my lathe. But I will keep busy one way or another.
Thanks!
Gary
Gary All I can say my friend is get well soon as that is the most important thing, your health. That was a great wee video ans very well explained, take care and hope that good Lady of yours looks after you LOL
Thank you Alan and happy you liked this video.
Yes I have a good one. She has put up with me for over 51. Has been a real angle with this event along with other minor things I have gone through.
She is resting as not gotten anymore sleep than I have in the last week. Lucky to sleep past 2am.
Hopefully that will improve soon. Need to time the pain pills better.

I have a couple of questions. One how far is the bottom rail , the miter slot from the edge of the bottom board. And where did you the part you used to make the miter rail. Thanks, Glad you're headed towards recovery.
I think I have that answer. The slide rails are full length and the slow is also full length.
The miter slow hardware is 1.25 inches back from the end of the board closet to the saw blade.
Search for this on Amazon. It is what I used: POWERTEC 71642 Miter Slot Hardware Kit (Slot Bars, Knobs, Screws, Washers)
Feeling much better today thank you,
Gary
Gary, so sorry to hear about your injury, get well and I will be waiting for your next video..
Thanks Michael. I had ankle surgery 8 months ago and missed a few months at the most. Been posting weekly since then
Thanks for asking,
Gary
Sorry to hear about your injury. Hope the surgery will fix it and that the recovery goes fast. Also I like to wish you and your family a happy new year!
Thanks so much Anders. Day 4 after the surgery feels better at times.
Happy New Year to you and yours as well.
Gary
Sorry you had that accident and it will keep you away from the shop for a few weeks but just do as the doctors say and don't overdo it! Doing some design work on the computer should be interesting as we all need to get better at that or at least I do! good luck with everything and thanks for the tutorial on the segment jig!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. I do enjoy the computer aspect of some of my designs and am happy to share them.
Thanks for your comments,
Gary
Hi sorry to hear of your fall🙁, the exciting thing about your upcoming videos will be that, each one will be a week closer to your recovery, all the best 👍🐝🌞
Thank you Jim and what a wonderful way for me to think about this.
Gary
Terrible news about your leg Gary - sorry to hear!! Best wishes for the speediest recovery possible. Be sure I will be one of your subscribers eagerly waiting for your return to turning and anything you post between then and now. Best regards -- Dennis
Thanks so much Dennis. I may have a ton of these fill in videos stacked up.
I find them fun to do as well. Not as much as turning but I got to do what I can do.
Thanks for your comments,
Gary
Get well soon! I'll keep watching whatever you put out! I like the segmenting idea. Something I'd like to try in the future.
Thanks so much!
Gary
Your videos are very interesting and it's a shame you won't be making any new ones for a while I hope you get well very soon Gary , I've watched a lot of operations where pins and screws are used and I always say what size is that bolt or screw and I like the saws for cutting bones etc , it's being a carpenter ,
I will be back soon enough.
Well now watching surgeries, now that is interesting.
I had surgery on a tenon once and swore it was hooked up. The doctor said he could do a arm block and he would show me it wasn't. When he got to that point he said I was half right. The sheath was still hooked up.
The anesthesiologists did not like it. But he lost I watched.
Not bragging. Just wanted to make sure.
Gary
Sorry to hear that your New Year is starting off on a painful note Blessings to you and your wife and sit back and heal and don't rush it we will be watching for you to start turning again may God give you strength and comfort as you heal
Thank you Wade and he is in action right now. Always with us.
Gary
Oh my.. I hope u get mended soon.. Sorry for your discomfort and see what you have soon.. be well and thank you..
Thank you very much Terry. Hoping these short videos I come up with will be helpful and interesting.
Thank you for your concerns,
Gary
Was sorry to hear about your troubles. The good part is that the six weeks does go fast and you will be back in the shop in no time. Just remember the bell. It's not that bad to ask the one closest to you for help. Take care God speed and prayers to you.
Thank you Paul. My wife is taking good care of me and I know my sons will be over if we need help I can not do. Which is most things right now.
Thank you for your prayers. They have all helped.
Gary
So sorry to hear about your fall. Hope you heal quickly. I think 3d printing is interesting too.

Sorry to hear of your accident, and good luck to you. And I think that an extended course in CAD will be useful.
Thank you very much Bob.
I will enjoy having the time to do some software videos. Not as much as turning but the fact of it is I do it anyway but do not record it.
Thanks for your best wishes,
Gary
Hope you heal quickly. Just make sure you listen to the doctor and do what they say!!! Happy New Year
Thank you Candace. I sure will try. With my wife's help I can do it.
Happy New Year!

Get well soon buddy! Be a good patient do as your told! I broke a bone in my foot in a similar fashion got six screws and a plate! Love your content!
Thanks so much Bob! Wow Not sure I "screwed" my foot up that much but I did get 2 pins.
Going stir crazy(not a long trip for me LOL) but I am listening and with the help of my wife will get there.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary I’m so sorry to hear about your leg/ankle I pray everything goes well and a fast recovery for you. Keep your head up
Thank you Danny. The leg does not hurt any more even though there is a fracture. But it is stable now because of pinning the ankle. Well we are still laughing and that helps.
Thanks for your prayers/
Gary
Gary - So sorry for your injury, that really sucks! I enjoy your content very much and always learn something new when watching. My prayers for a speedy recovery and take your time recovering.
Thank you Ray! (Also my middle name...longer version)
jigs are always worth the time to make when making segments and other repetative parts. Nice job making and thank you for explaining how you made that one. Sorry about your injury, Hope you heal fast. Always look forward to your next videos including your computer design videos.
Thank you Larry. As many have noticed that designing and making jigs and fixtures can be as fun for me as turning...well pretty close LOL.
I do have some ideas I want to do and show.
Gary
Gary, thank goodness you’re okay and get rest and heal up. You’ll be back better than ever and thank you for all of your videos. I recently started to get setup for segmented turning and your videos are helping me a lot.
Thanks so much
Oh my - so sorry you got hurt. Sounds like you are in good spirits. Get rest and you will be back.
Thanks so much. Yes it has gotten me down but not in sprits,
Gary
Gary, hope all goes well for you so you can get back to turning soon. Cheers, Tom
Thanks Tom. I will have to talk to the doctor but it would have to be sitting. At least for 6 weeks.
I need to wear this splint they put on then i can get back to the boot.
Thanks,
Gary
Thank you very much for all you do. I hope you get better soon from your injury.
