Colonist really need to make ranked games anonymous, only revealing the players identity at the end of each game. This would stop all of these reputation blocks.
So many other games do it and it doesn’t feel like its that hard to implement, like hide the name and have the option for private profiles. Imagine a solid competitor comes along with theses features and big names switch to that platform for the sake of their game
No, it doesn't. If you play in live tournaments you don't go to the table with a mask, you know that, right? If I sit at a qualifier with Dandy + 2 rookies, of course I'll be more aware to Dandy than to either of 2 rookies. I love Dandy's videos and his attitude in general, he's an awesome player, but if you want to "monetize" and "be famous" while streaming and having videos on TH-cam you have to live with it. Don't know if you're coming from having no awareness on online games, but it's common for content creators to get tagerted and stream sniped (people queueing at the same time to be in the same lobby) on any game.
“Being gaslit isn’t super pleasant from someone you respect” Bro was openly making suboptimal moves, literally gaslit himself, targeted you the whole game, and still lost.
and then attempts to gaslight me with that last comment. It's all good though. I hope as people see these cases on the channel, you notice the people who play overly defensively and off of reputation almost never win. It's just not the strategy that's going to beat good players most of the time.
@@odoacredacalcutta5085ost the most cards to 7s, most resources blocked, worst overall flexibility, robbed 2nd most, and rolled the least amount of cards. If it wasn’t for the perfect endgame sequence of devs, the road battle with both monos, red not getting army with Vp pull, and then the final trade for the win, it’s very likely I finish this game on 6-7 points.
Dandy Drew at it again! Great gameplay, and very funny to see the trade for the win at the end there. Most players would never make that trade or at least ask wht it does in your gand since you did pass with 2 devs at one point lol. Keep up the great content brotger
Helps to track the cards and know what your opponents have. From his perspective, it gives him a chance to hold road and maybe win if he gets an orbit but clearly, that didn’t happen.
I wonder if someone could make a browser plugin for you that obscures your name, so that your viewers never learn who you are. I also wonder if the Colonist team would be open to anonymizing your name in games once you reach a certain tier, or if you're a content creator. I know you said in the comments of a previous video that the Colonist developers likely wouldn't implement that with their limited resources, BUT I think they have a direct incentive in that more people could make these Road to Rank 1 series which brings visibility to the game. I personally discovered Colonist through a viral DyLighted video..
Would need to censor the names of all players at the table. It's pretty obvious you can just search an opponent Dandy plays against and look through their game history to find one that matches with 3 of the same players from the recording, which then tells you the current username of DandyDrew (not the name at the time the game was played).
DandyDrew, you should most definitely edit your videos to blur your name and maybe your opponents too. Even when you're streaming I believe you can set it up so that you have banners that will specifically block your name. + on the win screen you should also have a way to instantly blur your screen before your name is shown just so there is no form of bias while playing.
Multi’s presence saved you lol you were having a rough stream. 😂 sometimes people targeting you is a blessing in disguise because once you are targeted you will eventually fly under the radar due to other people being ahead. Also, content with comebacks are more satisfying. Either way you get worked up xD
Yeah multi was a champ that stream. I was getting repped EVERY game and at this point, it was around 1am. I took some time to reflect after this stream personally :P
what a game. super thrilling and thinking like there is no way and then you get the win. gotta admit. The win just feels so much more sweet when you win despite beeing targeted, eh :)
Catan is fun! But sometimes the other players’ demeanors can really ruin a game. I’ve seen too many times in chat “x player is stopping me from winning so I’m going to spend the game stopping them from winning” or “idc if I lose as long as x player doesn’t win” it really ruins the game when that happens. Of course, banter is part of the game, and I’m trying to balance the use of chat when I play to keep the game fun & fair
Due to the editing I can’t piece together what happened in the game chat. Based on what I can see at the end, Dandy really rubbed the Red the wrong way in this game. Does anyone have insight into what red was upset about? I didn’t see anything of note, but the editing of the game makes it hard to tell.
Red admits to blocking based on reputation/skill level and Dandy argues that he should be blocking based on strength of position around 16:23 (and there's some conversation before that). When Dandy ends up winning the game, Red considers his opinion vindicated.
At some point in the middle game, I expressed it wasn't cool to play reputation to red, and I made a cheeky but 100% joking comment after someone asked dandy what do you need, I said "For red to leave the game ;)" because red openly targeted me for reputation multiple times. This was purely just fun joking banter but I think red took it the wrong way at some point. After I won the game, red made the comment about complaining and winning, and I said are you okay? Then he claims I gaslighted him(!?) and attempted to make me feel bad for some reason. I really didn't say much during this game but I did stand up for my position when things weren't going great. I feel I got very lucky in the endgame considering I how this game played out but it happens.
also to make a case for other players. Sometimes if you play ows you block the other ows player eventhough some one else might be stronger to play to your win condition. So i see the thought behind blocking the hardest competition. I just think its not optimally to do it so early and without reason. Gotta focus on your game first i think :)
You need to change your name. It's not fun for us to watch a game were people play against you on purpose, and I also imagine that's not fun for you either. We can't connect with the experience of the game because it is not a normal gameplay.
This is old content - he already changed his name on twitch a couple weeks ago, but unfortunately he's already starting to being noticed with that new name too 😢
I hope you understand a lot of these games were played in 2-3 sittings on twitch weeks ago… I’m trying to strike a balance of playing and not trying to consistently conceal my name every time. I’ve found it comes with the territory at this point.
Dandy - do you think it would make sense for Colonist to eventually implement some sort of blind name thing in ladder matches? It's legitimately frustrating to watch even as a viewer IMO, I dislike how heavily recognition seems to play into behavior. While the argument can be made that social management includes such recognition (and, obviously, you and others can succeed despite said recognition) I feel like it changes the game a lot and makes it less fun to view. With Catan seemingly hitting a mini-golden-age of growth at the moment I wonder if it'd be a cool long-term change to allow players to change their display name much more easily.
I don’t think it’s really needed or necessary - this kind of reputation play only affects a handful of people in the community. I think better for improving players to realize these kind of strategies aren’t going to help you improve and rarely lead to giving you an advantage. I’ve found people who play reputation actually get so tunneled that they hurt their game more than anything else.
At 18:28, couldn't you have not traded that sheep, used the YOP for a wood and ore and then double road, settle, and pop? I feel like that would've been a pretty good YOP play.
Just change the name before every stream, then make a ton of TH-cam videos from the streams but as soon as you upload to TH-cam you gotta change name again
I would recommend editting a black square over your name at least, it'll keep you anonymous for longer at least. Even on stream, you could maybe do some OBS trickery. Just chancing your name will do nothing probably
the last trade by blue when he already had taken road was the dumbest s*it I've ever seen in my life. Btw if it wasn't for that noob of green who took 3-6-11- instead of 11-12-6 for absolutely no reason who gave you ridiculous brick trades for wheat early you would have never been in this game.
It’s not a good trade but if blue doesn’t lock road, he definitely loses this endgame so it’s a risk. He needs me to not win and hopefully find a way to close it out next orbit which could be possible. Clearly he didn’t anticipate the YOP ftw
@@dandydrew yeah but even locking road he was still only at 8 with minimal chances for a win. He was better off hoping red would 7 out and fail to gain road back rather than trading you 2/5 of a city when you clearly had 3 devs, so either you were at 9 with 2 vps or at 8 with a mono which reads as a vp anyways. In general in the ending you just don't see this kind of trades
Disagree. People are playing the game to win, not to successfully make the textbook move. Skill level is a factor in decision-making in every game/sport. If a player is much better but a little behind in points, the better player still probably has the best chance of winning in most cases. This video is exhibit A
I don't like the idea of anonymity, I get targeted alll the time w >50% wr and its fine, such is IRL. One could argue they are right to target you, you win more and manipulate the game slightly tipping the scales all day
This doesn’t have much to do with a high win rate - When people are going to play irrational simply bc someone makes TH-cam content, it throws the balance of the game. As red said, it’s fear and he’s seen me do stuff on my TH-cam channel. I get it… I’m a strong player and it might be advantageous to slow me down in some cases. That’s cool! But from the standpoint of making content to show the everyday player how to play an everyday game, reputation play to this extent isn’t great or fun to deal with. Ultimately, I hope improving players realize this kind of strategy rarely works in their favor. Great players don’t play that way because they don’t need to. Oh well, the show goes on. :)
Idk what y’all are talking about with reputation blocking at all. Dandy literally wasn’t targeted in any abnormal way in this game. I’ve been wrecked way harder than this when my position was really bad and I was losing because opponents misread the board and situation. I think he should have been bit much harder once he didn’t play the two devs on that one turn and with green and blue trading road back and forth. Meanwhile dandy is soaring past them.
Why is it a bad block? Dandy at 4 tied with everyone else with one knight already played and a city and strong OWS and he gets robbed by his army competitor. That was the obvious play there
Stopped playing board game arena when my elo hit over 400 ( top 5 in the world ) for the very reason dandy doesn’t like playing with people like red Just started to suck and all I want is a good fair game not being stolen over and over his cus of your rep. I can see where you are coming from. This was the final game of a 6 hour stream and I was targeted in every game that night, which is frustrating for sure. It was obvious I was targeted for reputation in most of the cases but if you run this game back, I usually don’t win it due to lack of flexibility.
