I'm still salty that his "Cyberpunk" record didn't took off and that it marked the beginning of the end of his career. It was a messy but brilliant and innovative record at the time and i really would've liked him to continue with his stardom power throughout the 90s. He was such a beloved original that he could've survived the impact of grunge. Come to think of it, he didn't survived that even with a very 90s record, so scratch that theory, lol.

I just did the same with Depeche Mode last month and omg, they did not disappoint! (There’s lots of videos on here from the current tour, but I recommend looking up San Antonio especially; yeah, I was there, but everyone else is saying the same thing in the comments: compared to the audiences in CA, NY, etc, San Antonio had the best audience experience, everyone up dancing and singing along the whole time. Still too many damn cell phones, people too focused on recording the whole thing, not really being present and just enjoying the experience, but less so than in other US cities. European audiences don’t seem to be nearly as bad about that.) I’ll be 48 in 3 days longtime DM Devotee, but somehow never got to see them live til now, and this was the best concert I’ve ever been to, hands down. The energy level in the whole arena was insane! DM are known for their live shows and how well Dave gives such amazing energy as a frontman, really pulls the audience in and up-his energy is infectious. Even at 60-61 yrs old, they’re still absolutely killing it! If you have the opportunity to see them on their current tour, GO!!!

The thing with 80’s sounds, especially the early 80’s, these keyboards were new ideas and sounds. Everyone was being creative with these sounds. Programmed sounds were being used as music. It was a Wild West frontier so to speak. Everything you hear in the 90’s, 00’s, and beyond started with these 80’s pioneers with something new and not knowing what the potentials were yet. As a rock guy most of us didn’t like it even back then, but a few people, like Billy Idol was pretty genius at blending the two genres.

If you want some amazing 80's synth, Duran Duran, Nick Rhodes pioneered alot of tech and sound design, Blue Silver is a cult favorite but Save a Prayer is a great example too

Interesting you mentioned it makes you want to ride a motorcycle. Billy Idol had a serious motorcycle crash in 1990, right before his role in the movie "The Doors". In fact, in the movie, he's walking around w/ a cane, due to his accident.
His autobiography "Dancing with Myself" is a wild ride. A rock star life, indeed!
Super fun reaction as always. Thank you both.

In response to mark 4:50 of the video: The killer kick started the bike over a few times with the ignition switch off waiting for the smell of oil to waft into the air. Satisfied the engine was primed, he switched the ignition on, kicked, and gave the beast gas as it came to life. As the engine rumbled, he pulled up his play list, found Rebel Yell by Billy Idol and pressed play then pause. The Mojave Desert stretched miles and miles in from of him, but out there, in the arid bleakness, was a new George. A George who wanted more, more, more….

One of the things people need to realize In terms of 'underground' music..the whole reason it's called 'The Big Four' of thrash is because that's basically the only bands that were left when most of the people who listened to those same bands moved on to the more 'extreme' stuff that was coming out at the time and by which point those four bands were already moving into to mainstream (By CHOICE I might add). But In terms of the underground, things only starting getting faster, more technical, more challenging and we all ate It up as there was a hunger for It. Morbid Angel's 'Altars of Madness' was a game changer when It released and basically single-handedly ended the entire genre of Thrash In a single day since there was simply no way for those thrash bands to complete with all these new dynamic bands that were popping up everywhere. There was still the odd Thrash band no doubt but mostly everyone moved on. It's just kind of unfortunate you can't get past your distaste for more extreme or 'harsh' vocals cause you're missing an extremely (and perhaps the 'most') important chapter In the story of metal which If you were really on the path of 'discovery' you'd be more willing to explore in your "Metal Journey." Not all art is meant to be 'palatable to the masses' ... It Is also meant to Invoke an emotional response and challenge you as well.

I've never been the biggest fan of synth-heavy music, but I really enjoy the build up of that sound around the 13 minute mark during that brief slowdown in the song. I would say a breakdown, but that term makes me think more of metal and a bunch of dudes moshing while a guitarist lays down a heavy riff.

I knew you guys would love it. As y'all said, it has all the elements, and Billy was born to be a Rock Star. Now please do "White Wedding (Parts I & II)," "Dancing With Myself," "Eyes Without A Face," "Flesh For Fantasy" and his *incredible* cover of "Mony, Mony" originally done by Tommy James and The Shondells in 1965. You will most definitely NOT be disappointed.
Billy is that rare breed: Just commercial enough for the masses, he definitely drew the girls in, but all the rocker dudes respected him. Because of his kick ass guitarist Steve Stevens he even incorporates some Heavy Metal in some of his songs, like this one and "Eyes Without A Face," so the vast majority of the Metal community also loves Billy. He's just an all-around star. Definitely an idol, and in the best ways possible. 🤘🏻
