FIXING Harbor Freight Sandblasting Cabinet for $10 !!!!!
Today we are going to spend some time fixing the Harbor Freight Sandblasting Cabinet, I've had this thing for more than 15 years and absolutely hate the thing because I can never get any work done in it. After doing some research I decided to take an afternoon and retro fit a metering valve into the cabinet and convert to a gravity feed design instead of the suction feed that it comes with, which is the first and best mod that has to be done on these cabinets if you want to get anything done!

Yeah. I bought it a long time ago. Never used it when I got it because it was a pain to use. Now it’s great, still don’t use it much but nice to know it’s there and able to do the work.
Im sure you know by now but the Eastwood floor peddle with gun kit with a 6mm nozzle will really boost your blast power.I added it to mine dont know your compressor size. I have the same cabinet and it works great with a 60 gallon compressor. I made a black pipe pickup instead of PVC like yours with a air bleed valve same thing basically .Good Luck with your setup!

After all was said and done, this worked great on my cabinet! I would highly recommend adding a layer of porch screen - I had chunks of stuff clogging the feed hose. Larger grit such as Black Diamond and walnut shell might not pass through porch screen, but there are many places to get larger mesh, and even in the kitchen aisle there are various strainers and sieves which could be cut/bent and used at the bottom of the hopper. Also, I bought the expensive clear tubing, but it's way too stiff to work in the cabinet. Instead I discovered and used the neon green Flexzilla air hose! It's super cheap and super flexible! $1.50-$2/ft. I used it for both the air line and the suction line.
I’m definitely gonna do some more mods to the cabinet. Need to add some plating on the inside so the material will have a smooth surface to return to the hopper vs getting stuck on the ledge, and totally agree that some kind of screen towards the bottom to filter any chunks out.

Where do you get the flexzilla hose at?
@@angelargrayjackson1874 I got mine at the local hardware store... they had a dedicated rack with different sizes on spools to buy by the foot, or premade rolls for air or garden hose (you'll want air hose). But failing that, if you look online for Flexzilla Air Hose, I think i saw NAPA online sells by the foot, but it's $2.39 -$2.69 or so per foot. I'd call or visit any local ACE Hardware store or NAPA store. NAPA can order any length and have it delivered to that store or to your home. I had to get special fittings for my setup because i used 3/8 air hose for the pressure stuff (common 1/4" size air hose would be fine), and definitely use 1/2" hose for the suction side. I'd get 5-6 feet of both sizes.... you'll probably have extra, but better too long than too short. Even after careful measuring i had to go back and buy longer because the universe magically made it too short anyway lol. Whatever the cost, it's worth it for Flexzilla because the stuff is so flexible, and stiff hoses in a blasting cabinet is hell. There's not much room in there!
Love how the compressor kicks in just a few seconds after running the gun. Sound like you need a bigger compressor.

It’s from bass pro shops, it’s a gold panning screen
Do you open the valve down under or keep it shut off?
It’s prob 1/4 way open. Just have to mess with it to get the best performance. Will depend on your media, air flow and tube sizes.
Would you change anything about your design. Like 1/2 inch pvc vrs the 3/4 or 1 inch vrs the 3/4.?
Only thing I would do differently is use air hose for the pickup tube vs using that hard clear tube. It’s more flexible so it would be much easier to use.

Somehow, you got LUCKY with that Unicorn of a gun, LOL. Those guns are so underwhelming in performance that it's notably remarkable with your drop siphon system in that you were able to get away with the media push value (from that gun) Their inefficiency is legendary, all except for yours. Yours is the EPIC 'Unicorn'...😉

Mine is super small. It’s just a nailer gun compressor.

Yes it’s the little 6 gallon bostitch that comes with Brad nailer at Lowe’s. Been using it for years but def need a bigger one. I run it at 120 psi thinks it’s like 2.6cfm
Have you used play sand? I know other brands do but this cabinet says not to. Just curious.
No, I’ve only used the sand that comes with the cabinet.
Are you happy with the mods? Is it day an night different?

@@chrisbuildsitall nice cool thx. I just went and got all same stuff for mine. What you think about running pvc up to the cabinet and just having short piece of that flexible hose. Like the stock piece of flex hose and using pvc to get up to inside the cabinet rather then flex hose from your new valve

It’s a hose barb, I used 3/4 pvc to make everything with a 3/4 valve, If I did it a again I’d use flexible air hose instead of the clear plastic tube.

How did that hose connect to the gun?
Ran it through the side of the case and then just connects to the gun like normal.
@@chrisbuildsitall So the hose replaces the siphon tube that comes with the gun and the air compressor connector on the gun stays the same, that is, still connected to the compressor
I just tried this out but I barely get sand in thru tube have to constantly wait alil and then it work any idea bought everything that was in the video
First thing is try to take apart your gun. Mine was really clogged from moisture.
I clean it still nothing working great for like 5 sec and then no more sand thru gun it like doesn’t make it up the hose for some reason

What type of sand are you using? Your options at this point are sand is too heavy/thick or the metering valve isn’t working correctly.
Now that it's been over a year, have you noticed any erosion on the pvc parts? is there anything you would have done differently?
So far it’s all holding up well, I don’t use it a ton. I would of added more flexible hose for the pickup hose and a screen in the case.
And some strips of metal along the inside edges so the sand falls to the bottom of the case and not on the ledges
Hey man pls help. I have followed the video 100% and and having issues the sand won’t go all the way up the hose like there’s not enough vacuum? I can see the sand go up and just fall back down. I’ve tried turning air up over 120 psi opening and closing air valve different ways. My compressor is plenty big enough I’m very confused please help!
My guess would be a restriction in the connection to your gun maybe not allowing enough air through the actual gun. I remember someone saying that using quick connects could cause that issue.
Also try adjusting your metering valve, just start all the way closed and open it just a little and see if it helps.
Last thing would be that your hose that is on your metering valve is too big, maybe reduce it 1 size and se if that helps.
@@chrisbuildsitall seems like plenty of air is coming out. I’ve tried Messing with metering valve. I’ll have to give a smaller diameter hose a shot. Just weird because I used 5/8 I/d hose I’m pretty sure the exact hose you used in video. Hopefully the hose helps because it’s driving me crazy!

Sorry you did not show what you did with the hose that went up through the hopper does it just hook up to your gun. Sorry for my ignorance i'm getting a cabinet in a few days and i know nothing about sand blasting
Yes, there is an air line that connects to the bottom of the gun and the feed line connects by the nozzle. I just drilled a hole through the cabinet and feed the line through. Make sure to use a rubber grommet so your line doesn’t get cut where it feeds through the cabinet .

I've done ALL the mods on TH-cam to my H. F. blast cabinet and it still sucks!!! The only thing I haven't tried is using the expensive black media.
Try some different media it may help. Best mod of all of them is the metering valve at the bottom. Personally I think PVC is the way to go because it’s less resistance for the media than using the steal pipe others use. Keep at it though, you’ll figure it out

Same here. I did this gravity feed mod, still not good at all. Media stream is stopped every 10 seconds. I have to use finger to block the nozzle to force air through feed tube to clear the block. The media is clean, no large debris. I don't know why it is still sucks.

So where is the other air hose?
It’s on the side of the cabinet where the door is. It’s a quick connect. The hose isn’t connected in the picture.

You need a skat gun 100 bucks 10x better
You do realize if you open your valve it will work better right if you open it too much you get more errors than you do media or sand or glass or whatever you’re using but if it’s open you get higher pressure if it’s completely closed you’re not getting hardly anything It’s pulling straight sand through it and it’s carbureted down. Trust me you’ll see that it’s a whole lot better if you open your valve to at least halfway.
My biggest issue is air pressure. I’m using a really small air compressor on this.

Way too much media in the cabinet also. The weight of it packs the media too tight where the siphon hose is. Seems like most people are using 2-3 "cups" at a time.
There’s probably a few cups in there. Issue I’m am having now is the media piles up along the edges and then the guns starts sucking air because nothing is getting down to the siphon hose. Need to come up with a mod to make the media return to the hopper correctly instead of piling up everywhere. Thanks for the info and thanks for watching.
@@chrisbuildsitall I'm doing this stuff this weekend with a new cabinet, so it will be fun lol. I don't think this method (which many others are doing) is ideal. It's better than siphon for sure, but I see their videos and hardly any media is coming out. All that happens is the sand settles on the bottom of the contraption and the air just flows over top mostly. I think the bleeder valve should be in the first "T" directly in line with the with the feed hose. That way the air passes through the settled media and keeps things moving. Also I see most people are using a 1" pipe and "T" which may help prevent blockage.
@@chrisbuildsitall I got mine together, and same thing here. Piles up on the sides, but just added more to compensate. But I'm having the same trouble with consistency. I still think there should be a 2nd valve to control the amount of media, and the bleed off valve should be behind the media entry. If the bleed off valve is where the air line comes in, you can have total control of the amount of media and air. The air valve will need to be a tad higher though so media won't potentially flow out when not in use. I'm going to try this. I never understood these "T" setups with no control of the quantity of the media.
@@chrisbuildsitall lean your shopvac against the hopper to vibrate it.
Attach a Harbour Freight Palm sander to the side of the cabinet the vibrations will move the media down.
