That Financial District apt was legit! Definitely see the appeal though of the East Village. We were torn between the East Village (Stuytown) and the Upper East Side (Yorkville) when we moved back. With kids the UES just makes the most sense.
Can you clarify something? When she said that even if you have the money you still need to make 40 times the rent - Does this mean that you can't pay ahead of time for the entire term of the lease? I've never gotten a straight answer for that one.
There’s one major part of this that wasn’t explained. There’s usually a brokers fee. You pay that. Not the person who owns the place. This fee can be anywhere from 10% to 20% of the yearly rent. If the rent is $3000 a month, that’s $36,000 a year. 10% is $3600, 20% is $7200. Yes you could have to pay the broker $7200 for the PRIVILEGE of renting that apartment. It’s a scam that’s been around forever. There’s “no broker fee” places. But they can be tough to find. The way I did it is go to actual apartment buildings. The ones with names. Use google maps and type in apartments or rentals. Then go to their website and you’ll find available apartments. If you go direct, there’s no fee. The apartment buildings can be high priced, but you’ll avoid the fee. Takes a lot of research but broker fee can be done.
I'll take my 3 bedroom off grid home in the Seqoiua National Forest In The Sierra Nevada Mountains, California. I'm enjoying my view of the swollen creek running wild outside my huge windows while I chill with a great cup of espresso. If you ever make it out this way we'll treat you to a rafting trip on us! Hell! You want a place to chill while you explore what we have in this neck of the woods we'll host you no problem. It's a trend with our friends and family. The more the merrier! Have an epic trip! We can't wait to see how it all work's out for ya! Take care always!
Finding good Appartment in affordable price isn't easy in Newyork city, you have to compromise on so many things . I recently went through all this....
Lol so basically move to New York to be homeless lol. And if you do find a spot on the street you need to make 50x times that amount to claim that part of the street.
PHILCAELA: willTravelforFood in NYC typical broker fees are 15% of the annual rent. So for that $2750 apt youre looking at $4950 upfront in addition to the first month’s rent and other fees. It’s highly advised to seek out a “no fee” apartment online and arrange tours with the individual apartment leasing department.
Wow! Brett I am so happy you released this as I am planning to move to Manhattan when I graduate in the spring. Thanks so much for this guide and all the tips you’ve provided here! Its definitely not an easy task apartment hunting in NYC!
For some reason watching this I thought you said that place was $1,800/mo until you clarified at the end that it was $2,750. As a New Yorker I was like WHHHAAAAA - oh. :)
Nice video! Just went through the process myself in September. It's not easy! I'm surprised to see how nice of a place your friend has (being a student). It would be cool if you talked about brokers and how their fee works, and whether or not a person should use them (I know there are pros and cons). I found my place on the upper east side without one and I love it! Would be interesting what else I could find with one though. Keep up the good work!
I get so excited with your videos. I honestly can’t wait until the day comes when I move to nyc. I visited once and was amazed. I’m such a city girl and love my home here in Chicago, but nyc sits right next to it ☺️
There is literally ZERO videos on living in NYC with a family.. we are relocating there and just thinking about the small rooms and walk ups with a 1 year old is driving me insaneeeee! Any tips on areas to check out? (Or to definitely not check out)
Nice video, but i'm gonna counter that mattress comment. After 7 years in NYC I've learned you don't trust anyone's mattress that's not your own. Bed Bugs are a rampant problem here. On top of that, its nice to know you have quality (I've had the same memory foam one for the entire period). Yes moving it can be annoying, but its worth the headache and thats what you pay movers for.
Nice apartment, Brett! But I agree in that I don't really see you as a Financial District type of guy. You seem to be the type that will find a location that suits you and then see what apartments are available there. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more videos of your apartment search. I, too, will be moving to an apartment (in St. Louis) probably in late Spring/early Summer. I've already started my search on Padmapper and Zillow as well as the occasional Craigslist search. Looking forward to upcoming content. Your videos are great!
Are prices of rent around the country getting so high that it will become normal for older people in their 40s and 50s to have roomates? It is like real estate is rising in certain areas way faster than salaries.
You need to make 40x rent to get an apt plus have some savings. That is the minimum standard. Saved everyone a lot of time. Plus be cautious of craigslist mostly rental scams now. You will lose your money.
I never understood how people move around so much in NYC! I’ve lived in the same apt for 4 years now and I’m getting anxiety as she’s explaining the process of being approved because I started imagining going through that process again 😩 also the broker fees... it’s good for people to know what they are getting into though!
Trying to move into the city now without a job because I don't live in the city. Can't find a sublet because I'm moving together with my girlfriend. Advice?

How does anyone afford NY? I'm a Veteran with GI Benefits. I would get 3400 a month from my benefits and my wife makes around 2k gross pay. That's around 60k a year. I can literally afford NY, but probably can't get an apartment because of the requirements.
Vanessa is a rock star!!!
Agreed!
You wanna say that she looks hot but can’t huh lol
I am looking at moving back to NYC... it has been many years of traveling around and can't wait to come back to where my heart is...

Good point about having natural light. It makes such a big difference to how livable a place is!

Thanks Brent you're a big reason why I started on TH-cam. much love from denver
This is really great insight as to what it's actually like to search for an appartment. It can be so overwhelming!
Vanessa in that cheetah coat. 10/10

Brett your subs are multiplying!
About what range were you paying for your previous rooms? Also what kind of cut is the broker going to get in your situation?

Mannn you're living my dream. I live in the Netherlands and would kill to live in Manhattan...
Same here
Fully furnished apartment for 1800usd in that area is quite cheap. I think the 40x income a month makes it hard to obtain it.

$1800 is SOOOOOO affordable :P ((great price for NY but the struggle is still REAL!))

Forty - 40 times the rent? So 2.5k a month rent is 100k pa salary?
Do you happen to know if you can combine guarantors to get an apartment in nyc?
WOW those prices. More of New York City please. I find that process fascinating.
Nolita, best neighborhood but too expensive. Trying to find a studio there now and it is rough.
Thank you for this! I'm definitely interested in learning more about the process.
Brett! are you going back to the Philippines anytime this year?
Even more grateful to live in Vienna.
Yeah show us the process
Yes to Cooking w/ Conti 🤤
He is definitely getting a deal that doesn’t exist. The real price for a studio like that is like $2.5K a month easily...
Video on how to go about getting a sublet?
Brett Conti should become a real estate agent
Bet you got some EPIC food when you lived in Chinatown!
Another sweet video :)
Is it possible to find apartments in NYC without paying a broker fee?
love that jacket
If it's possible you need to check out a chinatown "luxury apartment" hahaha!
So dope! New York seems so dope but a place you have to work everyday to thrive in!
not really. i work 28hrs a week and making $130k this year. all gone due to alcohol and stuff tho. lol.
Brett Conti needs to collab with Gabe Conte
GREAT VIDEO

Question: if you travel a lot for work does it even make sense to have an apartment in NYC?
How do you afford it?
whats the title of the song in this video
So say you get an apartment at $1,800/month. You need to make 40X of $1,800 monthly or yearly?
Yearly
