    The steel core in M855 was originally designed to add weight in the nose of the projectile and not as a LAP round. This allowed the designers to maintain specified overall length.
    The unintended effect of the steel core has it’s benefits though.

      Then they would have just used lead for weight, as lead is heavier than steel. The ss109 penetrator as it is called, was designed to defeat body armor back in the day.

      You mean REDUCE weight in the nose. Also, enables longer OAL projectiles for better stability in flight and still “tumble” terminally in soft targets.

    I ordered some of your plates a few months ago with the Kevlar coating based on other videos I watched. Seems like good stuff. I did a presentation on M855 against a soft target at 500 yds. Next will be one with some ballistic gel. You guys are out of Delta right? I originally hail from Beaver Ut.

    Let me repeat someone else's comment, try the green tip out of a 20 inch barrel.
    That is what it was designed for, and the loss of velocity with the 16 inch barrel is enough to prevent it from working.

      Yup. My X95 18” barrel will penetrate AR500 target steel plates using PMC XTAC 62gr “green tip”.

      If you’re running a 20 inch and not shooting 69 or 77 grain.. wasting time. M193 from a 20 will do far more penetrating than an m855

    I generally rock an m193 norma 55gr at 3200+ out of an 18" x95 for home defense. Will take out everything but level 4 armor. And if level 4 is coming thru my door Im probably already evacated or fighing on the front line.

      You got and vid evidence? I'm loading Hornady 55gr very hot. No pressure signs, but chronos at: min: 3373 max 3423. No pressure signs on the nickel coated brass.... but pressures exceed sammi for the 223 Wylde 18" BA barrel -- by a few thousand from the calculators I plug it into.
      Other than sighting in / getting a dope card on it -- I save the barrel life for SHTF armored zombie pigs (Don't know when the hot loads will kill it.)

    M193 would go right tru it with 20inch barrel like the original m4a1...but the spall with steel plates is the killer/worry even spall coating aka line x doesn't do much just makes you think it does

      @@davidtennien39 I use ceramic plates but the reason I would never use a steel is because the most common version of the 223 round punches right through them in every test I've seen. It's kind of a concern I wouldn't use them unless they figured out a way to stop them which I'm sure it's possible with a backer of some kind I think it would be nice to have a reusable plate if they existed

      The Level III plate will not stop m193 out of a 20in barrel. The velocity on the round is too high. Our Level III+ plates will stop the m193 out of a 20in barrel. It is specifically designed to stop higher velocity rounds. We did a test video on that already. Go check it out.

      @@predatorarmor Is that just cause velocity? From what I've seen, it's the 3300fps that gives level 3 steel an issue. The 62grs, I've never seen them chronoed that high on youtube. --- I've pulled GTs out of m855 and reloaded them spicy over TAC to get 3317-3382. Of course it isn't a "safe pressure load" -- but no pressure signs show on nickel brass. (I'd not use this for anything but an "armored emergency" of course... but I've never seen it done.)

      We have a video testing the m193 out of a 20" barrel on our III+. Depending on the the barrel length of your gun the m193 will penetrate the Level III armor. It reaches a high enough velocity that it will penetrate. Our Level III+ plate is designed to stop the higher velocity rounds. Check it out.

    With the availability of low cost of lvl IV ceramic plates why anyone would wear steel is beyond me

    You need green tips if you are running an inferior platform (16" Carbine with 9:1 or 8:1 twist).
    Straight up FMJ's out of my 20", 12:1 twist M16 will out perform green tips out of a carbine all day long.

    The spalling will kill you thought. Look at the wood frame closely when bullet impacts. It damaged the wood pretty bad 😆

      That depends on the length of the barrel and distance. Velocity is the factor at play here. The Level III plate will stop M193 from a 16" barrel and the Level III+ will stop it from a 20" barrel, at 15 yards. Depending on distance the Level III will stop it as well.

    Maybe you need to back up a liitle so the bullet can get some speed up before hitting that. I'm sure if it is used for the soldiers that they would be getting shot at more than a few yards, that was pistol range.

      Learn ballistics/physics before commenting. At 30 feet from the muzzle, a bullet is already slowing down. They do all of their “getting up to speed” INSIDE the barrel.

    The m855 otherwise the ss109 was originally designed to defeat a Soviet Helmet at distance. Try plates with a round say like 6.5 Grendel or God forbid a .30/06 black tip. Yeah it might not penetrate but it is going to ring Your bell.
