Great review, thanks for all the DWR /goretex explanation too! I have an old marmot I want to replace and now i understand why it feels clammy even under light rain. Gonna order one like this.
I really appreciate the DWR explanation and how to re-waterproof it, thank you! Those options are way better than buying a new jacket, I didn't know you could do that.
Thanks for the great in depth review. Helped me choose the right jacket. Marmot isn't that well know around here yet. Just received the new version and it has some fewer extra's then the old version. Probably cheaper to make. Logo's don't look as fresh as on this video. No button on the bottom of the storm flap. Wrist cuffs still very big, but you can cinch them down and the velcro is a bit larger I think (?) compared to the old model. No longer velcro on the front hand pockets. Also one way hood adjustment, seems to fit great with me. Don't know how it performs in heavy storms in the mountains. Had it on sale which is a great deal for a Goretex Paclite jacket with 3 front pockets.
How do you compare the minimalist to the torrentshell 3L jacket from patagonia? Got both new and can't decide which to keep. The Patagonia is more expensive. What i like compared to the 3 L is the chest pocket. U just don't have one on the 3L. Still.... What do u say about these two jackets I comparison. Thanks
They are really similar jackets, they use a different waterproof material, but overall their performance is quite similar. I don't think you can go wrong with either option.
I agree on you on the last part I own the same jacket So the question ⁉️ is What's the best choice for waterproof Jacket with no moisture and sweat inside of it ?
That is a difficult question to answer, but I can give you my opinion. The RAB Kinetic jackets are incredibly breathable and comfortable, they are made from RAB's Proflex fabric. There are a lot of similar options from different companies now that might be more cost effective or have a better fit.
I don't want to layer it with fleece. Just go on quick hikes, but keeping in mind that the skies can open up at any time. What's the lowest temperature this can go to? Just wearing a a t-shirt, for example?
If it is rain, cloudy and with low activity, I would say 60F or higher. If it sunny with high activity, 35F or higher depending on how hard you are working. Hard shells can be pretty warm, but the warmth come directly from you, there is no insulation in this jacket. They block the wind in rain from coming in, but also trap moisture from going out, that will also influence the “warmth” of a hard shell. Also, if you are working really hard and then stop, you will likely get cold from all of the sweat build up.
It’s a double edged sword but I gotta buy the slim-fit brands cause the baggy is great for layering but not hiking in dense woods. My baggy (and old) mountain hardware ended up trashed after getting caught on a branch bad. For what it’s worth, as a slim dude who doesn’t like being noticed, the Patagonia Rainshadow has been the rain gear for me. I do really like Arc’Teryx too but I’m not wearing anything that nice around town here.
You are right about that, I have a few waterproof layers depending on activity. if you need something for pure bushwhacking, look into oilskin/oilcloth/waxed cotton. It is waterproof and about a durable as it comes.
I will potentially make a video on this in the future, but for now, here is the product. They have great directions on their website. www.nikwax.com/en-us/products/hardshell-duopack/
HI there. Have you seen the new version of this jacket? What are your thoughts? Also, you mentioned you brought it in X-Large, do you normally wear Large? Thanks
I normally wear a large but wanted to be able to layer under the jacket so went for the XL, a good choice in my opinion. As for the new version of the Minimalist, I have checked it out but only online. The new hand pockets and wrist cuffs look like an improvement for sure. It does not look look like the hood has face adjustments on the new design, which could matter depending on the intended use for the jacket. Besides that, materials look similar.
@@naturenate7117 Thanks for your advice. I actually have both the updated one (which I brought in a LARGE) and the older style (which I brought in XL). I am also generally a LARGE size. I'm trying to decide which one to keep. When I compare the both, the older style in my eyes, looks and feels that its better quality but is a heavier jacket. The fabric on the newer version feels doesn't feel the same (lighter) and there is only one cord adjustment on the new version for the hood (which doesn't sit as well) and one on the bottom of the jacket. I fit in both sizes when layering and both have the same boxy style that allows layering. My intended use is to use as an outershell for a trip to Antartica. However, I need to keep the weight down as I have a 15kilo weight limit for checked in luggage........decisions I tell you! Any words of advice??
@@lifecomm I imagine you are going to be dealing with heavy winds, so the waist and face cord adjustments are going to be important. I would look at Rab, they have some light weight hard shells if you are looking for something else. But you can probably cut weight elsewhere, a hard shell will probably be one of your most important layers. Are you bringing camping/expedition gear?
@@naturenate7117 Thanks for the advice and highlighting the importance of the face and waist cord!! And it just happens that they are both the downsides of the newer version of this jacket! I'm not bringing much gear with me - only enough clothes to layer up/ down where needed. I kinda almost feel that I should run with the old version, even though it's a tad big for me....
@@lifecomm I would go with the older version, it will treat you better. For weight savings look into down jackets and alpha fleece layers. The Mountain Equipment K7 jacket would be perfect, about 800g and super warm. There are better bargain option out there too if you aren't going to need it much.
They look quite comparable and the fabrics seem to have similar qualities. However, I have no experience with the Torrys jacket. The minimalist is the only Marmot jacket that I own.
I got the same jacket on a sale a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, the jacket turned out to be not waterproof at all, and I was getting soaked in a matter of minutes even in moderate rain. The people from GoreTex were very helpful and gave me a full refund. Just a quick disclaimer, this is the first claim I’ve filed for a GoreTex product. I also own GoreTex shoes, pants and a motorcycle jacket, which all work great, as advertised. My opinion on the jacket: very comfortable, stylish and wind proof but not waterproof. Definitely works for hitting those slopes at the resort.
Thanks for your comment! I haven't had those issues with my jacket at all... Hopefully it was just a manufacturing problem and an isolated case, glad they gave you a refund!
@@naturenate7117 Hey, thanks for getting back to me. I think both Gore and Marmot are high-end companies and I was just one of the unlucky customers that got a jacket from a faulty batch. I checked the comments on Marmot’s official website and I found out that other people experienced the same issue. Thanks and have fun on the trail!
Yes it does fit with a helmet, more so a climbing than a ski/snowboard helmet, but those work decently also. It is definitely not a full technical jacket, but it holds it own pretty well when accompanied by a helmet.
This is a cheaper jacket in the scheme of things, it fits all the requirements but lacks on weight reduction, packability and a more technical fit. It is more of a “rain jacket” than a technical hard shell, but it will work fine for your purpose.
when you pronounce the word MARMOT, the T is silent...so it should sound like BO! MarMOt remember the T is silent! Nice video and very informative well done Nate
