Cross left the Knights after he was outcasted for being a former Blackstone if I remember correctly. Anglo-Saxons joined the Varangians after the defeat at Hastings. I see something here.
The painting you used for the Byzantine emperor was actually the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon the Great. The Bulgarians were at war with the Byzantine Empire for ages and Simeon's dream was having the throne for himself since he recieved education in Constantinopole. Great video and greetings from Bulgaria 🇧🇬💪
Just a quick note about the alternative penitent helmet, the face mask might be in reference to the masked helmets often used by slavic nobility during parts of the middle ages. Though the designs themselves do not match up the concept of a viking style helmet with a full face mask is not unheard of
I hope you see this message Raven. To get my thoughts on this too, the default armor of gryphon seems like a very heavy reference on Dacian armor. Even the wolf hooded one seems to be a reference to the draco symbol of the Dacians. The default armor family sets (Mercenary, Explorer, Penitent, Pilgrim) all seem to reference in some way Indo-European tribes and cultures (Norse, Celtic, Slavic, and Dacian)
I feel like if For Honor was a TV show, Gryphon would definitely be the main protagonist, for the Knights, for like the later season after the warden falls or something
Thanks for the video, really interesting stuff there, I knew gryphon wasn’t just a match up of different faction but carried a deeper inspiration, thank you.
I literally just binge watched this whole series XD A few recommendations for future episodes: Kensei Tiandi Shinobi Highlander Orochi (P.s I recommend these cos they're either characters I play a lot (orochi and shinobi), characters ik about (e.g highlander is probably based on William Wallace, obvious links to this being that highlander is Scottish and carries a claymore (which literally means greatsword according to my friend)) then others like kensei and tiandi I have played quite a bit and honestly am just kinda interested by
Well now I wonder since we ARE actually gettin’ an ACTUAL Varangian warrior in the game real soon, then what else can Griffin be based on if not a Varangian??
1:19 aint no way you messed the Broll up that bad. That's not Basil the second, nor the first. This is Simeon the Great, a bulgarian tsar who warred with Byzantium for most of his life. He would have been emperor of the empire if he didn't die at the gates of Constantinople.
Raven knight the hero you talked in the video that inspired griffin and made me want to play griffin Is now in the game, I'm so excited that I'm not spelling correctly
@@RavenKnightYT can't wait for your opinion, honestly I hope is a vanguard with two stance mode, two handed axe for offense and axe with sheld for defense like medji

When do you start getting the Greek armor pieces, I’m late rep 4 or early rep 5 I don’t remember and I still don’t have any and that’s all I really want in life
just for cuasuality becuase yk gryphon at first look seems like a very intersting character i search for this video 1 before the actual varanguian guard realeses
i always felt like the raider was based on the varangian guard, since he wields the titular great axe, from what I've read gryphon is actually based on rus knights, in fact some of the armor your scroll through actually resemble a lot of russian armor if you just google "russian medieval armor/helmets" you'll get a lot that look similar to viking helms mainly cuz they traded a lot in the later centuries with the rus, and russian and vikings used face mask helms, they where also used by the spanish before, while some of the helmets in the video do look very norse, a lot of the armor looks VERY russian, and the bardiche is NOT what the varangian guard used, they used a dane axe, or great axe, which is more closely in line with the raiders weapon, the gryphon could also be reference to the Bogatyr, a sort of legendary concept in russia, simillar to the "knight errant" of renaissance europe's legends and stories, much like how jormungandr is based on the ice giants
Gryphon mostly learned from JJ Highlander and Kensei. Why do you think he says Fjallabjotur so much I'm pretty sure that's the correct spelling except for the accents.
I dont think the hooded armor is viking. Unlike the viking armors, the symbol on the pendant belongs to the knights and the armor is plated not studded.
Hello Raven Knight. You know history partly. In This video you said so much for BISANTIUM, but nothing for us Bulgarians. In your video you showing pictires of BULGALIRIAN TZAR (Bulgarian KING ) TZAR SIMEON THE GREAT. WE Bulgarians have BULGARIAN,KUMAN,BISANTIUM, SLAVIC and GOTHS blood in our veins. Did u know who is ALARIC I. He comes from the Bulgarian lands
even though gryphon isnt well liked, the historical inspirations make his character so much more fascinating
This right here
Excactly
I dont, I actually love Gryphon. Pre-nerf gryphon I didn't like. I love his state now
Gryphon fashion is epic
Fun fact: A Varangian Guard carved runes into the Hagia Sophia where it is theorized to translate as "Halfdar was here."
Cross left the Knights after he was outcasted for being a former Blackstone if I remember correctly. Anglo-Saxons joined the Varangians after the defeat at Hastings. I see something here.
History and gaming, my two favorite subjects
Varangian Guard, who would've thought...
Monke man From Honor Land
After the nerf, he evolved to gorilla.
Comes from the Bp player lmao
Varangian monke
Monke perfected monk
Makes me wanna play Gryphon just cause of his lore! Sounds very honorable and loyal 😎
He's anything but. Or used to be anyway.
I have some hope in my heart that gryphon gets some proper knight armor since his "knight" sets are more aligned to the Roman side of the knights

I love medieval history especially when compared to a great game like for honor

man, I never thought this would be so cool. Thanks for the video! :D
Seeing gryphons Greek armor makes me want an actual hoplite hero so muchhhh
Given that Valkyrie already has the spear and shield combo, not sure what difference a Hoplite would bring.
I enjoy you doing history talk man I learn so much from people who know history 😃
The painting you used in 1:20 isn't of Basil the second, It's Tsar Simeon.
Well now I wonder since we ARE actually gettin’ an ACTUAL Varangian warrior in the game real soon, then what else can Griffin be based on if not a Varangian??
I'm gonna do a video addressing that
New subscriber love your vids your BP vid and centurion were superrr good
Welcome brother
I truly hope for a Varangian Axe and Shield hero.
You got it
Mans predicted tbe future
I usually dress up my cent as a varangian guard before gryphon was a thing. im glad they add a proper varangian like hero
I hope that ubi gives gryphon different heads that aren't Holden's face
It doesn’t happen for other heros, I wouldn’t expect it to happen to the one hero in this game who is literally supposed to be a single person
I love this guy now! He’s my next hero! Thanks for the discord add

The fact that people unironically hated gryphon and still do is kinda ridiculous.
His kick guarantees a top heavy and on release his dodge heavy was almost impossible to punish if I remember correctly

Another fantastic video!
Would love a specific Saxon housecarl type hero
I would be cool but the closest to a huscarl is raider with the chainmail and if you put the hundingsbane helm on him after all its a valsgärde 8
This vid made me sub ngl
Quality content. Subscribed.
Love your got dammit voice
The vicking helment with the full face mask could be a refreshing anglo saxon style mask.
I like your gryphon looks
Can't wait for the Kyoshin episode
1:34 excully this is not byzantine emperor on photo that is bulgarian emperor Simeon who made the biggest Bulgarian empire
Also I like to hear people’s options
The king picture you used for the vídeo is Tsar Simeon (Bulgarian ruller)

Rep 7 to 8 is the unlock period but rep 10 is when you get them a lot more frequently especially since from rep 7 until rep 10 you barely get anything
Thanks y’all
Well, would you look at that... We have a hero called the Varangian guard added to for honor

Perhaps Kievan Rus Vikings for the actual VG Hero?
