Mikey Offers Tina a Job at The Beef - Scene | The Bear | FX
/ fxnetworks
This is the realest job interview ever.
Love how Tina starts off just looking for a job, not because of passion, but because of survival. And then later, she finds her passion in cooking. The writing is off the charts 🙌
Eh, not really. Writing is a little shaky there. Tina's "I've been in this kitchen since before you were born" line stands out as a flaw. It's cool. No show is perfect, but don't act like Tina's character isn't a little messy.
@@williammccormick984It’s called hyperbole buddy
@williammccormick984 It's good for them to be that way. Having a flaw, fears and not being perfect is what makes it a good show. In the context, her attitude makes sense. In this scene, she tells Mikey how jealous/insecure she is about competing with younger people in the job market. Her reaction to being faced with competition from a younger person again makes her want to protect herself and dismiss the younger person. Saying "I've been in the kitchen..." is a way of trying to make herself feel better. That is why is she so happy when asked to be "a jeff", as she does feel like she will be replaced or kicked out by the "new managment".
@@williammccormick984what….
@@williammccormick984 She's being Hyperbolic, it should be super obvious by now. The show doesn't need to hold your hand all the time for people to understand
I love how this episode explains how mean she was to Syd in the first season: 1. She misses Mikey, she doesn’t see why they want to change Mikey’s restaurant so much, when things change like that people like her get fired 2. Syd was a young hungry kid like the ones who ignored her all during this episode
Amazing observation!!!
The fact that this episode was directed by the actress who plays Syd
It's also like "this girl who's 20 years younger than me is now my boss?" I know she's not her manager but Syd and Carm are the ones who see themselves as 'real chefs' in season one, so now there's two young people taking charge and switching things up
Jon Bernthal is beyond perfect casting for Mikey.
Man this episode really hurt…the entire time I was wishing Michael was alive. The chemistry between Michael and Tina was so good. And the fact that Ayo directed this…ugh…chef’s kiss. Wink wink.
Bernthal is electric in any role of his. He needs more roles and more screen time in Bear. I’d love to see a whole prequel series of “The Beef” before Mikey passes.
@@ComedyBros5It seems we get 1 Mickey appearance a season. Someone said the next season should show his last moments but idk about that it’d be pretty depressing
Dude was good on every roles he does
@@jerryperry1788 his death in Wind River is one of the most painful to watch... Small role but love the character. Kind of the same here in the Bear.
The fact that this is the first time we see these two act in a scene together yet it feels like theyve known each other as long as the characters have is insane.
Really makes sense as to why she misses him so much :')
Also why she was always so tolerant of Richie, he was kind and generous with her when she walked into the shop
@@nathanlatham5651she loves richie
"You know how much I loved him right? A lot. I loved him a lot."
The fact that line is in season 1, and we totally can feel how much she cared about him. This episode being s3 and it makes that line have even more clarity.
They really thought these characters out like they were actual people.
Hearing Tina talk about how she doesn't need to save the world, just feed her kid, really spoke to me as a new father struggling to provide stability for my family. Not everyone wants the biggest house on the hill, just a secure place to work, the basic necessities met, and a safe place for their family ❤️.
I see her, and I saw my mother for the longest time.
I think that's why this show is so beautiful. It makes greatness relatable. Richie might have the best character arc I've ever seen, and he's not saving the world or fighting aliens. He goes from being a likeable, but pretty shitty guy... to just a likeable guy. That's it. And that's attainable for all of us. That outlook paired with the constant presence of addictions and Alanon in the show lead me to believe the message of the show is that the most important thing we can all do is be decent people and make "every second count".
“I just wanna feed my kid” is such relatable energy. Being someone who transitioned from kitchens to blue collar work, I relate to that so hard of just wanting a good paying job
0:24 I like how he didn't go like "yeaaah i knoww" instead he asks with sincere curiosity "why? How so?"
The dialogue in this show is top tier, they seem like real conversations.
@SamUHells but also the fact that Mikey is a guy who keeps it real. He didn't understand so he asked, whereas most people wouldn't ask and pretend to understand
Jon Bernthal always steals a scene, he’s got that charismatic magnetization.
They made such a great decision having Ayo Edebiri, aka *Sydney's actor* direct this Tina-focused episode. It's like the result of their characters' growing relationship. Sydney really has become Tina's mentor in a way.
I loved this episode. Really showed how close Mikey and Tina were from the get go
Mikey on some level saw a mother who, at least on her mission to get a job, was completely the opposite of Donna and narcissism: both Tina and Donna provide for their kids, but Tina at least in this scene makes it clear to Mikey that she’s not out to make about her, just out to make it to take care of Louis and the rent
I have never felt this strong about anything but if Liza Colon-Zayas doesn’t get the Emmy that just wont be right, the twinkle in her eyes the delivery i felt something for her knowing well that she was playing a character that what art is all about making the audience feel something
She got it!!!
Spoiler....she got it!!!
You got your wish
And THIS was the exact scene where she secured her first ever Emmy nomination!
All hope lost and someone who’s willing to do anything to survive.
Here we see what people like Uncle Lee never saw or appreciated, Mikey was a good dude who despite his poor professional life genuinely helped other people's lives get better. Pretty sad honestly
"I'll clean the toilet with a fuckin resume" 😂
“I don’t need a resume, I talked to you”😭
That’s why she was always so loyal to Michael. 😌
This episode was phenomenal!
Best episode of the series for me love seeing Jon back as well
The act in between the two was priceless💯😎
I love her character. She is so real and awesome. I had a co-worker like that when I worked in kitchens in my teens. Guy worked hard for his family. Learned a ton from him.
In the season 1 finale where Carmy does the monologue about his brother and how he describes him. This scene with Mikey and Tina really demonstrates how great of people person Mikey was
For all of season 3s flaw they did such a good job showing us why Mikey was held in such high regard. Dude just oozed charisma
This is the only episode that actually felt like the bear this season
It was good but could have gone without it. Better than the season opener.
actually season opener was saved by the latter half
you dont know what youre watching sad the point of this season went above everyones head
@lacanm1554 I get what they where going for a sort of "slice of life" type thing showing the stress and flaws of the characters and life also some of its beauty, but its still a show with a plot I just don't like seeing main characters being sidelined in favour of the faks and other characters being treated like trash for no reason I also like plots being resolved and not having to wait an entire year for a new season there was no plot advancement nothing left me feeling satisfied, I love the show and can't wait for season 4 but I wasn't happy to watch a 9 hour music video.
Jon Bernthal is simply a national treasure. Whoever got him to do this show deserves all the raise.
And man it’s sad that we won’t get to see more full storylines with them two, because they nailed it. I could watch them talk all day .
His acting is AMAZING! He has done so much, I love him.
I adore Tina. She's tough and arrogant like a true Latina mother and watching her story is just beautiful
I loved this scene so much!! The fact that Mikey just sat down and had a genuine heart to heart with her ❤
Best scene in the season hands down.
Carmy and Chef Winger scene >
@@milesroy9564Chef Winger!😂 Genius.
@@milesroy9564 That one too!
One of the best scenes from this season and great acting!
This is how real conversations happen and real connections
this is probably my favorite scene ever with Mikey.
People saying this season was weak or boring don’t actually understand this show at all. This was a beautiful scene, one of my favorites of the entire series.
This episode was one of the best in the show, but the season was in fact comparatively weaker but still good
ayo should direct more episodes this was one of my favorites
Tina's eyes man! It's always so sparkly and beautiful. I noticed the show gave a lot of close ups on Tina because she can make the most of it
I really love that they embrace what it’s really like to work one of these restaurants. It’s loud and chaotic and miserable but there’s something about it that’s just fulfilling in an indescribable way
Man, I know people are mixed when it comes to season 3 but honestly, for something people consider a "bad filler season", this is still really good. I agree that the first 2 seasons were better(and really raised that standard we all expected)but S3 still has so much great dialogue and moments(like this)that really help flesh out characters and add to the overall narrative. I really enjoy how they've been handling the flashbacks. They still feel like they have weight, something compelling to say, and a purpose for being there even if they don't necessarily move the story forward much(like even when it comes down to Mikey filling up the napkins when he meets Tina after we remember hearing Tina, in season 1, talk about Mikey not caring about ordering napkins anymore before his suicide). There's just such great, genuine, nuanced, relatable human moments that are so well done just like this all over this season.
100% agree. Seasons 1 and 2 set the bar extremely high because they’re some of the best television I’ve seen period. Though 3 didn’t bring much closure on some loose ends (which isn’t a bad thing tbh) there were still some phenomenal moments that unfortunately don’t get talked about much. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought S3 was great.
I agree. Filling in backstories is not a bad thing. This season illuminated why Tina became so attached to Mikey and the Bear, and why Sydney wanted to work with Carmy. Great point about the napkins - I missed that one!
I was waiting for the "let me tell you something".
One of the best episodes. Writing, acting, directing is so on point. With a perfect title “Napkins”.
Honestly I would love a prequel show about the restaurant while Mikey was alive.
How come this woman has not been nominated for an award, the way how she delivered those words, the shine in her eyes as she admits she is jealous. Wow, I love this scene so much.
This show consistently produces the most satisfying scenes.
Ayo did an awesome job at the direction of this episode. Bravo 👏🏽
Man, Liza really brings it with her acting as Tina. Beautiful.
I feel like this is the scene that got Liza Colón-Zayas her Emmy.
BEAUTIFUL!
This was an amazing episode and this was the best scene.
Tina is really a good person. So it’s so nice that she progressed from seaosn 1
He’s such a phenomenal actor.
Something that caught my attention about Mikey was that in this scene, the person focusing on Tina was actually Jon being himself, not the character... The way he seems interested and engaging in the conversation, trying to be understanding and to sound relating is exactly how Jon does when he's interviewing people, and that was lovely!
That’s called acting brother
I think you didn't understand my comment, but that's ok.
Punisher yelling at Micro.. solid
Favorite episode of the season.
I saw that episode recently, and that scene made me emotional, as someone who's lost and still deciding about my 1rst degree. I've been going through the same situation as Tina, applying for millions of jobs, and feeling like i don't have a talent for anything when everyone else has a passion and loves their job, but looking at the way Mikey treated her, maybe that's the only thing someone in this situation needs, support...
Can't wait for season 4.
The skill of this show as "a machine to generate empathy" is absolutely amazing.
This episode made me cry. I had a similar experience like Tina. I got fired, I felt useless, and was desperately seeking a job for a whole month and the Costco food court hired me. I also ended up in the food industry 😅
This episode reignited my passions. I absolutely love it.
No matter how big the part, Jon Bernthal makes a movie/show better simply because he is in it
Probably my favorite scene from this season
The way Michael yells at Richie was the perfect intro for Tina to The Bear.
She already had the grit. Let 'er rip.
This ep was everything. ❤
I actually didn't like this episode at first. Initially, I thought it was a terrible idea for how to open a season. But the way they topped it off was spectacular. Amazing acting and amazing writing.
This episode opened my eyes to how bad it was to lose Mikey. I didn’t really feel the effect of his loss. Yeah, I saw how it affected the characters, especially Carmy but I never truly understood it until this episode made me get to know him better and how cool of a guy he was. Made me wanna cry for him.
This is really the best scene of the whole season seeing Mikey again 💔
This is just f*cking beautiful.
This is acting on the next level
If my boy doesn’t get his first Emmy trophy we riot
The trauma bond is strong here😂
She won an emmy here!
Easily the best episode of the season
Why does this feel so real?
You know when you get the job just by talking to the manager the job is gonna be either the best or the worst job you've ever had
I’m confused though bc didn’t Tina say she’d been at the beef since before Sydney was born? Always thought she had been at the beef for years and years
It was likely meant as an expression, instead of a literal statement. She likely felt intimidated by Sydney and chose to use her own intimidation tactic as a way to rebel against the changes.
Tina is my 2nd favorite character after Richie. I hated her at first when she bullied Syd, but after she was becoming a better cook and was liking all the adjustments to the restaurant, I started to have so much more respect for her.
Awesome
I wish we could get a prequel series before Mikey passes called “The Beef!”
The fact his light bulb moment "I should hire her!!" seemed to happen completely naturally was sweet. I dont think Mike really picked up on the fact she was essentially begging him for a job until very deep into the conversation.
I think it kind of speeks to how great of a person Mike is, how open, caring and loving, but.... it also shows how he's so consumed by the stresses of his own life and constantly distracted that he genuinely didnt know what she was asking for so long. Hell, theres a part of me that thinks he just offered her a job because he liked her, and sort of missed how absolutely desperate she was for that job.
I feel like you're looking at it the wrong way. No offense. What is happening her is she is defeated not even thinking about the prospect of working there. And Mikey picks up on her contentedness of just having stability in a job and likes her personality enough to, almost through serendipity, say she would be perfect for the line Cook position he needs to fill. Both weren't even thinking of the vacant job in their initial conversation and the aha moment clicks with him about hiring her and then she is caught off guard when Mikey offers it to her.
question: does this scene remove the resentment or front that Tina puts up to Sydney when she starts out working at the beef?
Season 3 all in all felt very padded and incohesive when compared to the other 2, but there's still so many incredible character interactions. This is one of them.
Proto-Sydney and Proto-carmie...
I haven't looked up Bernthals past before he came a mega star but with that performance, I'd wager he was in a kitchen at some point and knows the love/hate that comes with it.
Relatable.
It's beautiful
❤❤❤❤❤❤

This was about the only good episode this season. Please do better next season guys. You created magic the first two times.
I think S3 has been awful I really have not enjoyed it one bit its become so pretentious and full of itself trying to make every scene and award-winning artistic experiment its awful!
Tina and Mikey are good characters though I did enjoy this scene its pretty good writing
