Okay, I will admit I wanted the Quest 3 so badly that when I saw your review I was highly highly disappointed and I poo-pooed the messanger (You) and didn't trust a word you said. I thought you were exagerating and a bit of a drama queen. I OWE AN APOLOGY as big as a house, not even a small house, a mansion would be more apt. EVERY single point you made was right on! What I honestly think happened, just based on updates alone, is that they didn't really give dev teams a chance to work with the new technology beforehand. Like valve did with the knuckles, headsets, they should've sent out an unfinished product to the dev team to give them an idea of what their new hardware could handle to let them adjust the graphics ahead of time. While it sucks, I doubt it's going to take long for most companies to do so.

The resolution on the quest 3 is actually bigger than you had said, the quest 2 has a full resolution of 1920 x 3664, where as the quest 3 has 2064 x 2208 per eye, because the quest 3 has 2 screens, the overall sharpness is better cause theres gonna be more physical pixels in front of you. the quest 2 had 1 screen, but per eye was 1920 x 1832, but you have each eye with 2064x2208, instead of one eye only technically seeing like 720 pixels wide. the res jump is much larger, I had a reverb g2 and am switching to quest 3 cause the res bump over the quest 2 was immediately noticeable on the g2 but the frenel lenses and sweet spots ruin it for me, I tried the quest 3 and I was like I need one lol.

      @@BeyondtheBox1
disagree, as pixels per eye makes an even larger difference than a small reso bump, but then you get the reso bump anyway. If you put a decent strap on that thing so you can actually have the visor angled to your eyes properly that alone makes a diff. I'm guessing you have noticed that if you press the visor slightly against your face, and rotate it up and down a bit, you can get a much clearer image but try as you might, the straps won't hold it there. That's what the cushioned plastic arms on the bobo headstrap are for, to set the ride height of the visor, while the straps are solely for keeping the visor snug to your face. Also balances the front heavy weight.
On the quest 3's pancake lenses, you don't get that effect nearly as much, as the image is clearer from many angles, not just perfectly head on. but the increased weight while still being pretty front heavy added to single band strap doing the pressing of visor against face AND dictating ride head really does make it more uncomfortable until you get a proper strap.

I wanted to point out you said on charging, that charging the headset and elite battery separately was an option. I too thought this way and went about charging my elite battery by its self, many hours later and then I noticed the elite battery was not charging, stuck at 66%. Went back and read the instructions and confirmed by talking to Meta support. Both of which stated you have to charge through the elite strap connected to the headset. Doing it separately was stated that it could degrade the battery. I feel this is because the Battery Management System (BMS) is in the headset and not in the elite battery. Though this was not confirmed by Meta it makes sense, because of the statement of battery degradation when charging the elite battery by its self. Just thought I would post what I found out today. Hope this helps anyone watching your posts.

I added the Aubika 8000mAh head strap (no battery noise or issues). To be honest, the Q3 built-in battery is big enough for me. 1-2 hours at a time is enough. However, I found that without the battery, the headset wanted to gradually slip down. I found it quite annoying having to constantly lift it up. I can't tolerate much force on the facial interface, so I couldn't clamp the headset to my face. The battery on the strap helps to counterbalance the weight of the headset so I can have the facial interface hardly touching my face. Of course overall its now a heavier unit and I would prefer it to be lighter, but you can't have everything. It's a pity Meta couldn't remove the battery from the headset and put it in the strap only or do something similar that would make the front unit lighter and provide counterbalance, but I guess they dismissed this as an option.

I just upgraded from a quest 2 to quest 3 and I'm personally really happy with it. I think whether it'll be worth it or not to you depends on what you use it for.
I think the MR aspect is cool, the games are fun but there is definitely room for improvement there(from the games, not the headset). That said, I personally use my headsets more for pcvr gaming and fitness workouts and from that perspective the quest 3 is an absolute godsend over the quest 2. The fov and clarity in pcvr is night and day compared to the quest 2.
Comfort is subjective but for my face shape, the quest 3 is significantly more comfortable than the quest 2. The increased sweet spot size of the pancake lenses helps alot too where I just put the headset on and everything is nice a clear. I actually have to wear my quest 2 canted slightly down and twisted to the left in order to get perfect clarity in both eyes. The micro adjustable turn dial style of eye width adjustment is great too because I was inbetween clicks on the quest 2.
So yea, i can totally see why some are disappointed whereas some love it, it's just so subjective to the person and use case.
Btw I still use my quest 2 as a spare. I think I'll be making it my dedicated workout headset and leave my quest 3 as my dedicated pcvr headset.

Pancake lenses, actually being able to adjust for 65mm IPD (I currently adjust between positions on the Quest 2, but it's a kludge), Wifi 6E, AV1 encoding (with Virtual Desktop), colour passthrough (it has to be clearer and less grainy the Quest 2 pass though) and improved processing power (primarily for the encoding and navigation in standalone) are the reasons I'm keen to get the Quest 3 (primarily for wireless PCVR). Reasons I'm fine with waiting are the fact that I'm hearing a lot of reports of quality control issues with the displays (dead/stuck pixels in particular) and the lack of good aftermarket accessories available to fix the expected comfort issues and poor battery life (I'm using Meta's free silicone facial cover and the BoboVR M2 Pro+ with 2 batteries on my Quest 2). I'm also concerned about the crappy microphone quality we can hear in your video, but I doubt that'll be fixed (beyond Meta potentially reenabling Android's volume control). I've also just had eye surgery, so I'm hoping to regain stereoscopic visions before I worry about upgrading my headset.

Personally I love the quest 3 over my quest 2 for a couple of reasons, mainly the lenses as the clarity is night and day difference, the other reason is the colour pass through, yes it's not amazing especially in lower lighting conditions but infinitely better than q2 and usable now. The ultimate question would be, is the q3 worth £180 more than the q2? IMO I say yes.

@@Crunchy360 for me the mixed reality is something I wouldn't want to lose, but as a mainly pcvr person I think you're right. I never really heard great things about the pico so avoided it. I only got the 128gb model of the quest 3 and am happy enough coming from quest 2, I don't agree with the hate as coming to a q3 feels like a huge step forward. If the pico 5 can trump MR and still have display port I'll jump to that (if rumors turn out to be true).

It's well over £180 difference. On Black Friday period Currys were selling the 128Gb Quest 2 with elite strap and a carry case for £250 (and I got a 7% discount on top of that due to company discount). A Quest 3 is £480, Elite Strap is £70 and a third party carry case would be at least £25. So actually it's £575 which is £325 more than the Quest 2 deals that were around. But if you just consider the entry level headsets at current prices the Q2 is £250 and the Q3 is £480. So that's £230 more. Nearly double.

I wanted to make the jump to the 3, after having used the 2 for a couple years now, and considering getting into VR development - but I think a better idea would be to spend half of the money I would pay for the Quest 3 in accessories for my Quest 2, and extend the good experience I'm having with the 2 for a couple more years until they come out with the 4.

So for both the controls and the grainy cameras, they wanted to keep cost low and at $500 or $650 for what you get they managed it. The pro controllers don't just have cameras they also an xr2+ Prosser in each. Those are expensive. The camera image I'm sure will get a bit better with software upgrades, but if you want clear HD image pass through go get an apple headset. They used FHD cameras and because of that the are around $3k I think last I saw. All that said I agree the battery sucks and I was not pleased to see only 71GB available on the 128 version. Nearly half storage is operating system. For a system that size they should have started with 256gb.

    • @BeyondtheBox1

Apparently meta is currently working on a quest 3 lite ( quest 2.5 ) and is rumored to release some time this year in 2024 and is also rumored to be around 300-400 dollars USD. Its supposed to have similar specs and similar qualities as the quest 3 but at a much more affordable price much like how the quest 2 is supposed to be. My theory about it is that, the mixed reality features will most likely be downgraded, and the battery life will hopefully be improved from the quest 3.

Just get a 90° USB cable & a decent power bank.
Put it in your back pocket, run the cable up your shirt & over your ear, use a loop of tape folded over, so the cable slides through, but it's not sticky! (Or wrap around the strap, whatever is more comfortable 4you)
Then at around 25- 30% batter, plug in the powerbank & keep playing
    Simples!
    👍👍👍👍👍
Memory Foam helps, with comfort, on straps etc... I have the Quest 2 & 3... both have power banks & mem foam added, to parts of the straps with velcro straps, so they aren't stuck to the headset straps, & can be moved, for individual comfort 👍👍 Or strap the power bank, on the back of the head strap 😉

Thanks for the review. I have had the opposite experience - most of the "influencer" or unboxing reviews I've seen have said it's a "mediocre upgrade" or been kind of disappointed by it, whereas the vast majority of consumer reviews I've seen have positive feedback (especially those who directly compared the Q2 and Q3 because they own both). I think maybe VR is like anything else - subjective in many ways. As a first time VR user, I have nothing to compare it to but I decided to buy the Q3 even though the Q2 was on sale. If you've been a vr owner for 12 years (curious, as my early adopter membership with dev kit 2 was only 7 years ago, cv1 maybe 5) how is it you haven't gotten a good headstrap on the quest? It's common knowledge that most of the discomfort of that hmd is the fact that it's so rediculously front heavy, and the elite strap does almost nothing to help that. I cross band strap, with removable, rear mounted battery, is the way to go. I personally prefer the bobovr m2 pro headstrap with extra battery.
Balances the visor much better, more comfortable contact points, can have a battery charging while using the second, and basically run infinitely on quest 2, and like 7-9 hours on 3.
Then you can add the 20 dollar clip on headphones that are so plush they feel like wearing almost nothing, and they are worlds above the downfiring speaker ports on either quest.
Finally, add the fitness faciel interface with fan. I know, people say they can't even feel it. That's the point, you don't want your eyes drying out. But it does move enough air to significantly reduce sweat build up, and basically eliminates fogging issues in the morning or cold play sessions.
Kiwi makes some nice controller covers, that include a length extension and dock rechargeability, over the knuckles straps, and access doors so you can still access batteries if needed.
With those things, you have arguably top 3 vr experiences with quest 2, then it comes down to your personally preference.
I've been gaming since the early 80's, so I'm pretty sensitive to small increases in sharpness, and while the pancake lenses don't remove it completely, the screen door effect and blurry focus issues and god rays many people complain about (myself included, some games it's like they smeared vasoline on the lenses) are significantly reduced. Also, the quest 2's refresh is actually 70 native, 90 and above were added later and it doesn't quite keep up, even if the game is delivering plenty of frames.
I've used quest 2 standalone, wired to pc, and wireless to pc, with and without virtual desktop, and considering the large increase in fidelity you get there, even counting the compression the cable adds, I can't really see how quest 3's lenses don't give you an immediate increase in viewing pleasure, as even the same graphics should look much clearer, as they do with the pico, which you said you have.
Just seems like you are avoiding the add ons that really open up these hmd's to purposefully go for the inferior first party experience. Hell, for a while I even setup my light stations and used the index's knuckles on both and was still much much happier with that arrangement.

@BeyondtheBox1 If you're extremely picky about certain things, expect perfection, or don't notice things like the frame rate and graphics limitations of the Quest 2, then sure, the Quest 3 is barely an improvement.
Personally though, I'd get a Quest 3 for the improved lenses, increased FOV, and the improved CPU alone. If you're into VR, then just those 3 things justify buying one IMO.
Almost everything is improved on the Q3 though, with the most notable exception being the battery life and microphone, which are a slight step backwards. As far as the battery is concerned, just to let you know, it's not because the battery is smaller on the Q3, it's actually bigger but not by enough to compensate for the higher power consumption of the Q3.
Id agree that the roughly 15% reduction in battery life and quality of the microphone are not great traits but neither are deal breakers for me because they can both be resolved with add on's. (backup battery and separate microphone)
So those are the two biggest issues for me, other than that, there are improvements across the board, even if in some instances there's only a slight improvement like with the new head strap being only a bit more comfortable or the new controllers. The touch plus controllers actually do increase the tracking accuracy a bit over the Q2 BTW.
Then you have the MAJOR improvements. I mentioned the new CPU and lenses above but there are quite a few other things that are greatly improved.
For one last obvious example, look at the pass through. You're right to point out that it has noticeable flaws but it isn't even in the same ballpark as the Q2s pass through so if someone is looking for an upgrade from the Q2s pass through and they don't have a ridiculous 3000+ dollars for an Apple Vision Pro, I doubt that many would feel as if the Q3 weren't a massive improvement over the Q2s and that's the point. To be fair, you have to judge the Q3 based on what your getting for the money. The Q3 is still a budget headset. If it's held to the standard of a 3000 dollar headset then of course you'll be disappointed but for most people the improvements will be obvious almost immediately if they're upgrading from a Quest 2.

"I don't understand why in 2023 we don't get OLED displays on the Quest 3"
The reason is actually pretty simple. The OLED displays are worse. Yes, they have amazing contrast/colors/black levels, but they also have horrible screen door effect, ghosting, and just weren't a good fit for headsets going forward. Now, it's possible if they used Micro OLED, which fixes those problems, but that's way more expensive, and would've upped the price considerably.
I do wish it was possible to have Micro OLED and have it be the same price, but unfortunately... that wasn't really possible. God, do I wish that though.

I actually havent had many battery issues. Yes out of the box of course its going to be bad, but after a few days i noticed it did get noticably better.
Tracking wise, the only issue i have is that if you hold one controller in front of the other the further controller loses tracking. This is only an issue in fps titles. Maybe ill get quest pro touch controllers though.
I cant lie even with the pretty grainy and somewhat muted passthrough, first encounters sold me on the idea of mixed reality. I had fun with it, my family had fun with it, and i still play it from time to time
As for the faceplate, i like the material, it makes it a lot less sweaty, but the head strap puts a lot of weight on your forehead. Im getting a bobovr head strap though.
As for games, any text is so much more readable, and small details are more clear. But it is still very similar to the quest 3.
I did notice however that the UI is a LOT less laggy than on the quest 2 so thats kinda expected but still nice.
I like using my quest 3 for simply watching content too, especially if im pretty tired atm
Overall i like my quest 3. My quest 2 i gave to my siblings so we can play together, so its not like that went to waste either.

I have an old rift S headset and wanted to upgrade to something. Awhile ago I bought a refurbished quest 2 from meta and after 30 days I sent it back because it seemed very weird how either blurry or fuzzy it looked. Could have been because it was a refurbished they just never fixed the lenses or they were scratched and not fixed in the refurb process. (I had heard the refurbished process for meta headsets was bare min only fix noticeable broken stuff and leave the lenses alone unless noticeable issues are there) the issues I had could be that or they could be a bad pair of prescription lenses I bought not matching my current eye prescription, or lastly my PD was 64mm and the one mm offset from setting 2 was making it look like that.
As you can see lots of factors could have lead to the bad experience. So since the quest 2 is on sale for $250 new right now, later today I’m going to go to my eye doctor and measure my PD and updated eye prescription for new lenses. I’ll see if my IPD is ok and will improve my decision on if I should pick up a quest 2 or wait a few days and buy the quest 3 for the IPD adjustment.

Its a flat 30% increase in resolution. Its capable of producing graphics and textures with around 3 times the density. Everything is automatically 30% more clear because of the better lenses. However this percentage can actually be higher is developers make use of the new hardware. Having tried it the simple clarity of the new lenses makes it worth an upgrade. I dont necessarily think its worth 500+ dollars. Is it perfect? No. Is it a noticeable improvement over quest 2? Immediately so. overall, the q3 isn't perfect but it is worth the upgrade especially when you look at the pancake lenses, the better ipd adjustment, the actually useful passthrough, the better graphical fidelity (expecting all games to update to the q3 within weeks of coming out is insane), the slightly smaller design, the overall better controller design/haptics, etc.
Nearly everything has received quite a moderate upgrade. I also saw in the comments you said controllers should have cameras standard in them? How do you seriously expect a low - midrange vr headset to include a processing chip + several cameras in their controllers while keeping the price below 600?
but tbh, if you have no issue with the quest 2 then remain on it. he's not wrong when he says you aren't missing out on much, plus if you're into pcvr the quest 2 generally performs better in that regard.

Hi all, first off I would say the review is spot of for expert vr enthusiasts and if you already have a quest 2 it might be worth the wait.
That being said I have the original oculus, rift s, quest 2, and recently purchased the quest 3.
Out of the box no strap upgrades the quest 3 is way more comfortable than the quest 2 and the lens don't fog up lift the rift S. Coming from primarily pc vr on rift s, the quest 3 is an amazing upgrade and definitely worth it if you want some longevity out of your headset with all the AAA games coming out updated for the quest 3 not to mention Xbox game pass coming to meta. Your definitely going to want that higher picture clarity.
I would say for the average user the battery life is fine for the quest 3, comfort aside I don't see myself standing or being in vr for more than 2 hrs at a time without a break. That being said standing for more than 2hrs on a fps game or other active game is tiring and I often found myself switching to seated mode and plugging in to an outlet to extend my play sessions.
I felt the color pass through is really good, it isn't perfect by any means, however, I was able to read my phone and get things done around the house like make some coffee or just reach for things without taking the headset off, all you have to do while ingame is double tap the side of the headset to switch to pass through, really cool. The pass through is not grainy I would say more blurred and fish lens-ish, however I think this lends to a unique experience in mix reality where the clarity of the vr rendered world is better than real life in those modes really adding to the immersion of the experience.
I do eventually plan to upgrade to the elite strap but don't feel it's necessary atm for my face structure. The amount of articulation the quest 3 offers really allows the user to adjust the headset as necessary and for me I didn't have any distraction from light passing through in the nose area so I can't attest to that issue.
The next big thing I would like to say is buy your self a 5g link cable from Amazon for like 20 bucks if you have a pcvr ready computer, I was able to play half life alyx with no issues and it looked amazing on the quest 3.
To fix any updates on graphics for older games there are many you tube videos explaining how to install side quest and other applications to tune games for upgraded performance on the quest 3, takes a little bit of know how but like I said indepth tutorials exist on TH-cam.
Over all I would say if you don't own the quest 2 the quest 3 is a no Brainer especially if vr in the past has made you sick or you think Xbox game pass without a Xbox or powerful pc might be something you are interested in. Plus right now you can get asgards wrath 2 free with purchase and will get the first asgards wrath free for pc app if you have it and than you can link and play the first 1 through your pc.
I purchased the 512g version as i saw some of the future vr titles are coming in at 50gb plus and the software already takes up about 20gb off the bat, but i can see how if you have faster internet you might not have an issue reinstalling games at your leisure.
Look forward to hearing any thoughts or debate with different experiences, also pavolv shack blows the steam version out of the water on quest 3, insane looking and fun with all the mids being developed!

Finally, an honest review! Instead of a hype video to push the Quest 3. I've purchased a Quest 2 due to it's price to performance value. There's a huge price difference between the Quest 2 and Quest 3 right now. I've demoed the Quest 3 in stores and wasn't seeing the quality that the online videos have been saying? Although it still is impressive, I might add. I see the difference on paper but haven't been able to see it on demos in the stores. I haven't been able to find a Quest 2 to demo so I figured since its been out for a while the bugs should be worked out with it. The reviews are impressive as well. Though the Quest 3 is said to be a better version of the Quest 2. Based on my experience in the stores and simply the price differences I decided to go with the Quest 2. It's still a strong headset. I do like the idea a A.R. of the Quest 3 and really wanted to have that option along with the full color passthrough, but it just isn't worth it yet for double the price in my opinion. I also figured the Quest 2 will be a good first VR headset. I'm excited about it and can't wait to play around with it! This video helps me feel better about my purchase and confirms I'm not missing out on much yet with the Quest 3. I know with some time the Quest 3 will become even better its price will eventually drop and a newer version will surpass it. Thank you for the straightforward review!

I came to the same conclusion as you that the Quest 2 might be good enough for now considering its price point. I just ordered my Quest 2 for 250 on GameStop last night. My first venture into VR as well. I have a 3080 ti PC, so I will probably be playing more Steam VR games than Quest games. Please let me know what you think of the Quest 2 so far

You can't use non micro-OLED displays with pancake lenses. You can't get the brightness up enough to without severe risk of burn in.

    • @DrR1pper
      @DrR1pper 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@BeyondtheBox1 the solution of keeping with pancake lenses whilst retaining infinite contrast ratio is, micro OLED displays like the ones used in the Apple Vision Pro. Whilst I don’t fully understand why, burn in is far less of an issue so it can be driven much harder. For example, Apple is said to go up to 5000 nits of brightness which is insane. Best OLED tv won’t do more than 2000 nits right now and that’s on a 1% window only.

@@BeyondtheBox1 I agree with you but the device would have cost a LOT more if they used micro OLED. I mean, just look at the big screen beyond with micro OLED that is a truly barebones VR headset, needing valve base stations for tracking. Over $1k for that and smaller FOV too.
