    I’m an enthusiast who is not a collector, but limiting yourself to just one watch forces you to make too many sacrifices in order to force your one watch to do it all. I’d rather go with two watches: a rugged tool and a dressier watch. An affordable combo I personally recommend: a Marathon Steel Navigator for everything sporty and a Christopher Ward Valour chronograph for everything dressy. The pair costs you about $1,500 USD and covers all bases without feeling forced into any of them. A watch that is good for everything is likely great at nothing.

    • @runningwithshemp
      @runningwithshemp หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think it's hard to beat Marathon for their offerings. I have an MSAR and Officers Mechanical in SS steel, I and wear almost nothing else. I've gone to quite a few watch boutiques in NYC just to look around and other than A lange and Grand Seiko there almost nothing even costing 1000's more minus Sinn that I really want to own.

  • @Lbfree125
    @Lbfree125 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I would also recommend a Sinn 556… a bit over 1k USD but can be had in pre-owned market for less. Solid watch, various colorways, screw down crown. Tough yet versatile. Great everyday wear piece!

    THANK YOU for not bashing the new Seiko 5 line, like the other guys tend to do! Yes, they cost abit more, but the increased water resistance of 100-proof meters alone is worth an extra 50 to 100 bucks, and with the new calibres that hack, what is not to like :)

      Very cool watches, could wear that a lot - dive bezel precludes it from dressing up for me, but to each their own!
      My watch that makes the others sit in the box is my Eterna (Kontiki 4-hands - champagne dial)... It's pretty yet rugged enough, wears incredibly well and seems to dress up and down equally well. (A bit out of budget for this vid, though!)

    Great video! Your point about unobtrusiveness is important and not often talked about. When putting in hard, long hours at work or at play, not noticing your watch is a virtue. Also, on military deployments a bracelet can chafe and irritate. A nylon is best for long term, hard use imho. All the best.

    I tend to rotate through my watches fairly frequently - a week on the wrist is about the most any watch gets before it's time for a change. Some of the watches I wear the most, possibly due to recency bias, are my Seiko 5 Sports Nano Universe SE (SBSA187), my Seiko 5 GMT (SSK003), and of course my Erebus Origin (you can't beat that bracelet!).

It definitely would come down to either the Steinhart Ocean 39 or the G-Shock 5000U but to pick one and be done? Nope. I have 6 watches - only one seems to truly fit the GADA/"one watch collection" profile in that its the only one i actually would wear for anything.
    That watch is my Eterna Kontiki 4-hands (champagne dial, not the black) - the face is dressy enough to look good with formal attire, whilst also sporty enough to work as a casual, domed sapphire helps IMHO. The case is likewise a great balance between the two, lume use is a bit unique (and I love it). Great bracelet, great clasp (no micro adjust but doesn't need it on my wrist)... This is one I could, and often do, wear for days on end in multiple settings and not feel the need to swap.
    I love my Formex Essence (43 chronometer) but its a bit more clearly sport and doesn't dress up quite as well - great watch, supremely comfortable, but I couldn't sell everything else tomorrow and not feel like I needed to buy more - with the Eterna, I could.
    Likewise with the Longines HC - divers don't dress up well, IMHO, so thats not in the running either.
    My vintage Longines (Flagship) is unbelievably comfortable, but it's a small and slim case, manual wound movement, and is basically strictly dress.
    The Sugess Chronograph (in lime green) is strictly for casual.
    And the Seiko SNK805... Keeps terrible time and basically never gets worn - but it was my first automatic and that alone saves it from the bin.

    I tell the wife that I need a one watch collection inside my 15 watch collection (huh?) when we go on holiday. I need a watch that is smart enough for a fancy restaurant and rugged enough for the beach. It also needs to have a stop watch, world time and alarm. And it must not be so expensive so that I'm worried about losing it. I ended up with a casio lineage. It ticks all the boxes for me.

    • @EnglishTMTB
      @EnglishTMTB หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest, the only reason I only take one watch on holiday is so it CAN be a nice one - and I don't have to worry about leaving it in the holiday cottage (or hotel) or getting OCD panics about whether I definitely packed whichever one/s I wasn't wearing.
      It's well outside the budget for this vid, really, but I took my Eterna (Kontiki 4-hands, champagne dial) on holiday as it's the one I can rely on to feel and look right for just about anything... It's not a super cheap watch, but it's not stupid money either - absolutely love this one.

    Can’t stand the PRX. Hate to say it as it feels so close-minded of me but I have yet to see any variation of an integrated bracelet watch that I like. Guessing it is my age, born at the beginning of the 70’s and I loathe most everything from that decade; clothes, cars, music, fashion, etc. even the food was bad lol. Love the 60’s and the 80’s have grown on me over the years so maybe there’s hope yet. I do so love the Alpinist and a few of the cocktail time offerings from Seiko so that is probably my next goal - if I can keep away from the tempting microbrands and constant AliExpress sales ;)

    Nice watches. If I could only have 1 watch, it would be my $100 Casio G-Shock.

      I would be tempted to choose my Timex Ironman, but I'm afraid it would die on me at any time and leave me with a 0-watch collection. So I think I would have to go with my Invicta Pro Diver.

    Excellent list. All winners. Tough to pick 10, especially when allowing micros in the mix. Traska, for example…

    Good vid. Good topic. I will go ahead and predict the Ascent would be towards the top of my 'one watch collection' watches. If I were to truly go with a single watch, meaning I got rid of everything else and literally only owned one watch, I'd probably go with the Aqua Terra. Have a SARB, and the Aqua Terra-ish San Martin, both of which would be WAY up on my list of the current watches I currently own though I'd really prefer a screw down crown so the SARB wouldn't quite make my cut. I'd also consider my Wise Adamascus which is technically a diver, but a pretty trim diver. The San Martin 62MAS homage would also be way up there. I'm not much of a true dress watch guy though I love dressier watches, the Cronos Date Just homage is super nice. I daily wore an original Orient Mako so wouldn't disagree with something in that range. I am really liking the Tudor BB54 and homages thereof. I also really like the Swiss Watch Company Bunker which is one of my favorites but it can't really pull the dress watch role. I have a Tisell 39mm Explorer which I really like but lately I've been feeling it's too close of an homage, if you catch my drift. I do like the Khaki and have two of them but as an only watch, again, I'd like a screw down crown. At the cheapest price point, the Casio EFV-100D would get my vote, esp in white on a vintage brown leather for daily and a black leather for dressier occasions. Bottom line, if I had to choose today, I'd go with the San Martin SN0113, the Aqua Terra-alike. Or the Adamascus.

    Love the Erebus Jody. The Origin would make my one watch list but in general, any resectable diver with a bezel to use as a timer is important to me. Automatic is fine but a solar would be practice long term. Can't go wrong

    I got a Seiko SBSA273 and I bought an aftermarket medium tan leather strap for it. Can't wait to try it on the leather. It's almost all high polished so it's dressy but the mint indices keep it playful

    For me, it’s the Islander ISL-05, Marc’s homage to the SKX013. It’s the exact same dimensions as the 013 and the dial is just different enough to be called a legit homage, but the specs, including a very comfortable J style bracelet, make it an easy daily driver.

    I'd totally buy another Alpinist if they got rid of the 'cyclops', even at the overinflated prices... I miss my SARB017 dearly 😔
