    If you watch Titanic backwards it's about a magical boat from under-the-sea that saves a bunch of people from drowning.

    Revolutionary Road really showed how they would have collapsed as a couple.. Hinging their entire relationship on the sweet abandon of the early stages whilst ignoring the clear-cut differences between them and societies impending crash into their dreamlike existence.

      Nah, I don't think Jack and Rose from Titanic are the same situation as Frank and April in RR, mostly because of how the two guys differ. Jack's whole deal is that he's a free spirit who lives his life the way he wants to regardless of social expectations, and that's the philosophy that makes him content with his life even though it ends too early. Frank is on the total other end of the spectrum where he wants to leave his mundane life in the suburbs for something more adventurous, but he is too scared to go against the norms prescribed to him by society. This ultimately is what ruins their relationship, so I think if Jack and Rose would have made it because Jack possesses all the qualities that Frank needed to fix his marriage with April.

    Did you know the Titanic was part of a major coincidence in history? In 1898, author Morgan Robertson wrote a novella called "Futility". The story was about a British luxury ocean liner named "HMS Titan" that sank after hitting an iceberg while crossing the northern Atlantic ocean. Then, 14 years later in 1912, the exact same thing happened to the RMS Titanic. After that, Robertson renamed his novella "The Wreck of the Titan". Here are some more coincidental things between the Titan and the Titanic.
    Both of the ship's names sound similar.
    Both ships were dubbed "unsinkable".
    Both ships were approximately 800 feet long.
    Both ships hit an iceberg, and sank, during the month of April.
    Both ships sank a few hundreds miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
    Both ships resulted in the deaths of nearly 2000 people due the shortage of lifeboats.

      +CanadaDragon I loved reading about that coincidence when I 1st heard about it, as part of the renewed interest in the tragedy after Ballard discovered & photographed it. I really makes you wonder about precognition, doesn't it...? Not the super-accurate sci-fi version, of course, but the quieter possibility that some people may be born with an ability to sense the future, an ability that's just like any other genetic talent, so may be strong or weak. The author of Futility honestly thought he was writing fiction; he had no idea where specific ideas came from that he incorporated into the story. Since people generally don't know where their original, creative ideas come from, who's to say if I'm correct?

      +Bill Davis I am aware of how my opionion sounds but for those 2 characters it was just a movie so you have to see the greater picture. In many movies the death of a character is not in vain or just for the sake of emotions, but helps the other characters to grow. It's the story of those 2 and there is a meaning behind his death is all I'm saying.

      +Caellum Jack and Rose weren't and James Cameron wanted to capture the 98% chance to survive of women of the first class and the 8% chance of men of the 3rd, with this massive difference between those two fictional characters, who at the end of it went trough the same disaster.

      I disagree, expression that is found in the idea of complete freedom. Is only found if both individuals are in harmony.
      As a Christian this written, when Christ said let them be one as we are one.
      Can humanity obtain a kind of love?? I think if Jack lived the notion that she wouldn't be free is not true.
      Again in Christian theology, love has a purpose and a function, both spiritually and physically.
      I believe humanity, can understand true love because of the fallen nature we have, but like titanic it's something we can aspire to!

      Thousands of people? Hyperbole much? Some lived, you know? There were only about 2,224 people on board ship in total. In fact only about 2/3s of the people on Titanic actually died when the ship sank. So around 1,500 died in the sinking. The rest all died some time afterwards of other various causes.

    Just wow! The ice-berg does not only further Titanic's symbolism of fallen hubris, but it also furthers the less-aparent hubris in Rose's and Jack's relationship. Such quick relationships don't usually work (love at first sight... so rare) so in order to preserve the "timelessness" of that relationship, the ice-berg comes in to, in its way, "freeze" the moment into eternity. So we see man's hubris at the societal level with the sinking of the Titanic, as well as man's hubris at the interpersonal level represented by R and J. If it hadn't been for Jack's death, would Rose still be so "in love" with him as we see in the movie? Probably not... So we see hubris/pompousness/drama whatever you want to call represented in more than one way!.

    I have a problem with Slavoj Zizek's theory about the poor briefly romancing with the rich to revitalize them - there maybe precedent for this in stories, but I don't see it in Titanic. Rose gave up on a life of money - never married Cal or pawned the Saffire - and while she clearly managed lead an interesting life involving flying planes and travel (the details of how aren't told) she didn't seem obscenely well off as an old woman - far from an aristocrat.
    Otherwise, while you can argue for symbolism, she lets go of Jack because he is dead, it's the practical thing to do if she's going to save herself.

    • @darthrex6267
      @darthrex6267 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think jack's death is what MADE her want to do more, If she had never met jack and the ship sank, she would continue with her spoiled life, or killed herself, But when she met jack, it changed the whole game. She became a different perso

    • @MagusMarquillin
      @MagusMarquillin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael Roberson Yeah, I agree. I was responding to Zizek's interpretation put forward in this video and in "the Pervert's guide to Ideology" which argues that Titanic is another in a line of stories (i.e. lady chatterley's lover) where the upper class character has a fling with a lower class character to find new energy for living, and then casts them aside when their done - a little like vampirism.

    • @theproplady
      @theproplady 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Magus Marquillin Eh, Zizek's a Commie, but one of those classic Class Warfare Commies, not one of those "everybody is racist and sexist" Commies. But if you're going to argue that Rose exploited Jack because she was rich and he was poor, you could also argue that she exploited him because she was a woman and he was a man. (Women have intrinsic value because of their childbearing capabilities and men are expected to consider themselves expendable. Therefore Jack had to die so that Rose could live to reproduce. )

    • @MagusMarquillin
      @MagusMarquillin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      theproplady Yeah, "women and children first". That was the prevailing view at the time, and still is I suppose though we try to pretend otherwise.
      I was otherwise impressed by the points he made in his movie, so that I have to wonder if I'm missing something on this one. The thing is though, I was originally swayed by a lot of Anita Sarkeesian's points that I've since come come around on hard. Whenever someone sounds warning on ideologies, the first place to look is his/her own.
      Or maybe our own. :)

    Sometimes while watching this I like to try to figure out what killed us and when. Apparently we have 33 depressions before we go and we currently have two (long depression and great depression). Also, we go before the ice caps melt. Since 100 years is to sort a time for thirty one depressions, I have to assume that global warming gets solved or delayed. So since the next glacial period is predicted to happen in around 50000 years, and assuming a depression every hundred years, we apparently bite it between 5000 and 50000 CE. Any sooner, and it would imply long strings of depression that are still not the same depression. Any longer, and we wouldn't be able to melt our polar ice caps and so that comment about us dying before we could would be strange.
    Any other help dating the future destruction of mankind? Perhaps someone knows how we die?

    • @darkmario720

      Adam Billman wait it really depends on what you mean by "melt" do you mean melt completely or just enough to cause real problems because 100 years is almost one person's max lifespan and while I do admit I know nothing of global warming or how it works I still HIGHLY doubt it will ever happen in my life time I mean 100 years is not as long as people make it out to be...
