There’s an interview on TH-cam with Mu Carvalho, one of the songwriters of this song. And he reveald, much to everyone else’s surprise, that he and his writing partner actually wrote this song by the melody first, trading lines. One would write a melody line, the other would the write the next. Only at the very end they added the harmony. As they were writing the tune, they were chating about the importante of the melody, that had become somewhat overlooked by Brazilian songwriters after the Bossa Nova movement shifted the focus to complex jazz inspired harmonies. Yet, the harmony is always the most comented aspect of this song.
Your passion for discovering music from all over the World is truly inspiring. Keep up the good work!

Oh maaan. I used to listen to this with my dad...
This song low-key marked an entire generation - and their kids.
We always viewed it as a parent growing old and still trying to be a part of their kids lives, to still mean something to them.
We were the kids back then, but we're growing older now... We're finally understanding it. We're becoming parents ourselves.
Thanks for reaching out to it. This was amazing.

Yes this song was composed in 1976 and still is a major success to these days. Composers Mu Carvalho, Cláudio Nucci and Paulinho Tapajós are all great musicians and took part on other very influential songs in Brazil. Mu is one of the founders of A Cor do Som band, Nucci was one of the original formation of Boca Livre group.

David, I was very happy with your comments! I'm Brazilian and like millions of other Brazilians here, a fan of the group Roupa Nova. This song is one of my favorites and I have followed it throughout my life, it was the only one that I insisted on being on my wedding playlist exactly 30 years ago. Thank you very much for your remembrance and tribute to this song. Stay well always! Big hug !

It's a pretty famous song here in Brazil. I remember when I was learning to play guitar, how difficult it was to understand Sapato Velho - tempo, chords, melody. Even been a song I knew since I was a kid, everything was so strange.
Btw, one of the composers of this song (and I assume that it's his harmony) is the keyboardist Mú Carvalho. He did a lot of work in Brazilian music, but I recommend the band "A Cor do Som", especially the live album in Montreux.
    Great video, David! Thank you.

Kiko, the Roupa Nova guitarrist, actually shared this song's vocals from each member of the band here in youtube. None of them sing at the same tune at the same time, and that created the powerful effect of an actual choir we hear in this song. Roupa Nova has many wonderful songs, but Sapato Velho is one of my absolute favorites.

I always wanted to hear an analysis of this song from a "not Brazilian" professional!! It always bugged our minds here in Brazil in Harmony classes. It is really a very well composed song and it was a huge hit it the 80's!! But even more beautiful, is the harmony of the voices!! All these chords are sung by the band members, and also, they have a "a capella" version, which is awesome. Congratulations David, you really nailed it!!

Congratulations David! You've explained beautifully! This is a song I grew up with and played on my acoustic guitar when I was a kid even before I had classical lessons. It all makes sense. I think the musicians that composed it, did it by instinct, by not thinking much about the construction. And your Brazilian Portuguese is awesome!

Thanks for doing this! The comparison with Chicago is spot on considering melody+harmonies but the Toto comparison has also lots of merits: both bands are formed by renowned session players that morphed into their own bands with tremendous musicianship. Not to mention timeless hits (Africa x whisky a go go) and phenomenal “give me chills” ballads (i won’t hold you back / I’ll be over you x A viagem / Linda Demais / Bem simples / começo meio e fim). Still lots to explore as you go about Roupa Nova! Keep it up! 🎉

This is an awesome song and every brazilian likes it, me included.
what I like the most is whenever they increase the tension in
"Hoje não colho mais as flores de maio, [then increases]
nem sou mais veloz [then you think you're good, but no, increases again]
Como os heróis [then resolves and goes back to theme]
É, talvez eu seja simplesmente ..."

What a great video David! I had the privilege to play with Thiago Feghali son of Ricardo Feghali one of the Roupa Nova members, they all came to see our show once, all wonderful talented musicians, anyways, this song it's just wonderful in all aspects, and your harmonic analysis was wonderful, and even your Portuguese sounds great man! All the way thumbs up! Thank you so much for subbing my channel what an honour have you there, I really appreciate your support! I love your videos and of course every time it's a Brazilian song I'm there cheering! Loved the one about "Construção" by Chico Buarque! "Sapato Velho" was written by another wonderful musician Mu Carvalho, he had a group back in the 80's called "A cor o Som" with Armando Macedo (Osmar Macedo his dad invented the Guitarra Baiana), Ary, Luciano and Dadi.
