He made this music after meeting Jacqueline Bisset in Paris. He did not recognize her and when she asked hi what hw did, he said "I am a poet". And she said: "So write a poem for me" and he got a napkin and wrote "White Poetry". Only after he left the bar, he was told who she was. He regreted being a bit arrogant with her,and tryed her o come back but she had left. Years later he remembered the incident and decided to wrote this song. But he got her name qrong and end up talking about Belle de Jour, which is a movie with Catherine Deneuve. So, he got everyhting wrong, but still thw song is his greatest hit and a classic.

OMG! This was all over Brasilian Radio when I spent 6 months there in 1992/93 . Had percussion lessions with his drummer, of course was at his shows in Recife and Olinda.This man is a legend in Brazils Music history. Got him to know also. Great memories, maybe the best time in my life, very emotional!
The time sounds right. I don’t live close to any beach, so I remember when I was a kid at the 90s and we traveled to the northeast listening to this song. It immediately brings me the nostalgic feeling of being on a car on a long road seeing the sea at distance…

If you take this journey I think you will find as a vocalist that the Portuguese language does many interesting things with the tongue that do not commonly happen in the English language. Things that can make the singing feel very silky, seductive, slippery and beautiful at times. It is a wonderfully diverse country, and it's music is likewise wonderfully diverse, soulful, sad, joyful, magical and inspiring - frequently all of this and more, all at once in a single moment.

Alceu Valença is a Brazilian national icon. He is from the northeast of Brazil and his accent is very typical of the northeast, especially in the sound of the letter "D", which, to my ears as a Brazilian from the southeast, is admirably different and beautiful!
Idk, but also, I think the sound of the letter “D” is even more specific/accentuated due to the Recife accent (the capital of Pernambuco state, where Alceu is from)

This guy is just one of the most talented musicians I have ever seen...
Alceu is simply one of the very best artists in the entire histroy of Brazilian music. His style can't be defined to a single label: he has dabbled in psychedelia, protest songs, folk, frevo, samba, etc. His live concerts are usually very intense with sparsely quieter moments like this video here. I highly recommend you watch his concert "ALCEU AO VIVO NO MARCO ZERO" for a real taste of how great he is on stage.

I feel the same way about music. Every time I listen, it takes me to a deserted beach with my wife with some boats at the side, horses running on the sand (in brazil we have some beachs with horses lol, especially in bahia.. It's amazing).

That strong D sound that you reffer to is specific to some accents in northeastern Brazil. Alceu is a artist from the state of Pernambuco, and here, the accent is very characteristic, with the D and T sounds made with the tip of the thongue. It's not just the song. We talk like this.

That is the nicest thing about most of our main singers who sing this especific type of songs: they don't care about making everything beautiful and perfect. They feel like they are, in a beautiful evening, sitting at the sand of the beach, surrounded by friends, with an acoustic guitar on their hands. It's not a concert. It's about having fun. It's a gathering of friends. They all sing songs that you can both just close your eyes, relax and feel de song, as much as get up and take your partner to dance cheek to cheek, falling in love all night long. That's why is so easy for him to make the audience to sing along and make part of the concert.
The most famous singers of this kind of music are all friends of each other and they often do a big concert together, from time to time, named "O Grande Encontro" (meaning: The Great Meeting) and is starred by great names of brazilian music as Zé Ramalho, Alceu Valença, Geraldo Azevedo and Elba Ramalho (which is Zé Ramalho's cousin).

Such an amazing review. I'm from the same city as Alceu, so I've been listening to him since I as a child. He plays every first day of Brazilian Carnival in Olinda (PE) for free to public. His kinda Olinda's carnival godfather. He's still on the road for several decades and have played along with Ze Ramalho (as you reacted about a month ago). If you are keen to dig a bit more into Brazilian music, here is one I think you would like to listen to. He also has English albums, and have played with Elis Regina (you already reacted to her), his name is Tim Maia. If you want to kill two birds with a rock I'd recommend to start listening to "Elis Regina & Tim Maia - These Are The Songs".

He lives in the city of Olinda, and sometimes (mainly Carnival month wich is february) he simply goes to the balcony of his house and sing for free to people at street. And sometimes he get down and join the people walking the streets. He is just a Icon!

I love how La Belle de Jour talks about remembering a beautiful memory, and because of it it has this nostalgic longing but sweet feel to it. I was exposed to it A LOT when I was a child on countless summer sunday afternoons, so the song itself is the soundtrack on a lot of my most treasured memories and colour them the most beautiful summer blue; fitting isnt it?
(writing this got me thinking how many cultures consider blue a sad colour, but I'm from the northestern coast of brazil - like Alceu Valença himself - and to me blue is the colour of open summer skies and warm beach waters.)
