Fun fact: you can actually use a method called portal slicing to easily create these portals at any hight This trick uses a mechanic called update suppression, which means that you basically create so many block updates that the game forgets to break the portal when you remove the obsidian Docm77 used update suppression in hermitcraft 6 too to make a cursed portal
"Beneath the portal is tons of clear space for the portal to spawn" The "clear space": 1:29 *(He prob said that as a joke so I'm gonna delete it as soon as he confirms it)*
SalC1: "Why does this portal exist like this?..." Me: IDK, it's 2b2t, we find ways to delete bedrock, trust me, if the engine allows it, we'll find a bloody way mate.
It’s not what happened here but to put it extremely simply, if you overload some nearby chunks with rails and a minecart, you can break the obsidian and portal blocks.
If you think this is crazy, you should see what Docm77 did with a portal on Hermitcraft. He used update suppression to remove blocks, and then replaced some areas with diamonds. The end result was a portal that was framed by diamonds, and was a 2 block portal. 1 by 2, with a complete diamond frame, minus the corners. On a server running the official Minecraft version, up to date, and it was still functional.
There’s also ways to do this with lag imput and what not. DocM77 actually did a Whole bunch of videos doing things like this on the hermit craft server. I think he called it the infinity portal (it’s basically the area 77 story on hermit Craft)
I remember playing in an older version of Minecraft before 1.8 I believe and there was a glitch where you could remove the obsidian from the portal and have it just the teleport part itself there was also another glitch along with that to remove pieces of the portal so you could have a one block portal with no obsidian around it without using commands
The most likely reason it decided to spawn there of all places is because portals will look for a 1x4 selection of blocks to put the bottom part of the portal in, as close as possible to the approximate corresponding co-ordinates (because co-ordinates between the Nether and the Overworld work in a 1:8 ratio). If it can't find any within a certain radius (not exactly sure how big that radius is, from my testing I would guess 16 blocks), then it will spawn in the air with extra obsidian at the foot, as you showed at 3:13. By the way, when portal spawns, it will only look for a 1x4 area that matches the orientation of the origin portal (i.e if you're taking a portal from the nether that faces east-west, the portal in the overworld will spawn east-west. Even if there is a 1x4 area available, if it faces north-south the portal will just spawn in the air instead). So that may account for some of the weird portal glitches you may encounter. source: minecraft.gamepedia.com/Nether_portal#Portal_search_and_creation (and also my experience)
You can break the obsidian and keep the portal in MC, if you basically hit the limit for block updates just before you break portal, it won't update it. Also, near spawn there's a portal with the portal in it sideways.
If someone wanted to get into 2b2t for the first time, how would you even start? Seeing the powerlevel fo current players and their gear, it seems like a mountain to climb short of an active dupe exploit and the knowledge of it off the bat
It’s possible to remove parts of a portal with update suppression, but I don’t know if it works in 1.12.2 but it probably does as it works in newer versions
I know that using certain commands and mods you can obtain a nether portal block I wonder if it’s possible that at one point during some backdoor or exploit someone somehow obtained nether portal blocks, but never told anyone, and they hidden somewhere in the world in an enderchest or base hidden millions away Would be pretty cool
could be that, in order to make the portal most likely to spawn on the surface, rather than in a cave or something, the algorithm scans from world height down. in most survival scenarios there'll be no blocks at y=255, so scanning from the top down is usually fine
There might be another way, if you break one of the portals blocks while walking through it when you go back into the over world the portal will be there but a block from the frame would be missing this might be patched not sure but it did work
1:26 SalC1: "beneath the portal is tons of clear space for the portal to spawn." *Camera pans to an absolute wastland of small, floating, fully-stone islands above an ocean...
You see, in 2b2t, it's physically impossible to build a base without a MAGICAL picture coming out of nowhere and people INSTANTLY discovering the coords.
Il mango worked out the spamming banners or something on the block would mean that when you broke a part of the portal the portal would remain in tact because there is a limit on how many ticks can happen to a block. So It doesn't process the nether portal breaking. I know this is not well explained but its Il mango soooo watch his video for better explanation
It's just the world height limit. Portal was either made and spawned at the height limit (unlikely), or it was world edited and moved upwards, which hit the height limit and so cut off the portal.
I had something similar on 2b2t yesterday, a portal from the nether spawned in the overworld 1/2 over water so the bottom corner thatw as over water was missing - the portal effects were still there though.

*God has entered the server*
idk how, but ive made these before multiple times... but instead it was the other half (vertically)
there is actually a way with a redstone contraption to make a portal like that, (hermitcraft area 77) but its still insanly hard
Some dude: *destroys it*
Another dude: *spawns it*
And it repeats
It could also be made by lag supression wich is a technique to make insane things such as floating flower floating portals and etc
This is just an example... "naturally" not "manually" trees can grow when you place them at 255 above a dirt block and use bone meal on them.
I love how much 2b2t has revealed of the inner workings and coding of mc
