- Hi there :) Welcome to Chapter 1 of Rise of Bangtan!! I was amazed at the QUALITY of this!!! It seriously is like a high budget production documentary. I was really grateful and shocked at learning information about Kpop as an industry as well - these are things I would have never known. Also, I am super excited for Chapter 2 because we will get to see their debut!! See you next Thursday!

Do you know about Korean age? Koreans count people’s age differently. They count the time the baby was in the belly and they rounded up, so a baby is born as a 1 year old already. Everyone in Korea also “grow older” together on New Year’s Eve. For exemple: V was born 12/30, he was 1 year old already, the next day, on New Year’s Eve, he and everyone else in Korea got older, so, on 01/01 he was 2 days old by Normal age, but 2 years old by Korean age. When Jk says he graduated school at 16, I’m guessing he’s referring to Korean age, he was probably 14 years old but normal age.

Keep in mind...when they say their ages, that is their Korean age. Their global age is usually about 2 years younger than what they say. They are considered 1 year old at birth and turn one year older every Jan 1. They celebrate their actual birthdays, but don't turn a year older that day. So when JK says he graduated middle school at 16, he was 14 by global age. An example would be Tae. He was born Dec 30/95. He was considered 1 year old on that day...2 days later was Jan 1/96 and he turned 2. In effect he was 2 days old but was considered 2 years old in Korea. It's very confusing for us westerners but yes, in effect they were super young in this video. JK wasn't even 14 yet globally when he signed his BigHit contract. He moved away from his family and in with these guys. Thank goodness they were so loving and caring to him. It's no wonder they consider each other as family. Tae wasn't in this first episode because they kept him as a secret member until they debuted, even though he had been training with them all along. I hope you will also react to the bonus content and deleted scenes...they are important. Thanks for letting it play to the end, lots of reactors cut it off. Thanks for reacting.

Hyung is basically saying older brother it's what younger males (or actual blood related younger brothers) call an older male so jk has to call all of them hyung while Jin the oldest doesn't have to call any of them hyung. Also for the future just incase you hear these words come up "Oppa" is what a younger female calls an older male or their older brother "Noona" Is what a younger male calls an older female or older sister and "Unnie" Is what a younger female calls and older female or older sister. These terms are very important and you will hear them with Koreans in general because Korea is very big on respecting your elders.
In this series they talk about the K pop industry and how artists are made. But also it tell us how different are the big 3 companies to Bighit on the way they treat their trainees. BigHit gives liberty to create their own music and take care of them in all aspects. Aneesa said that she wanted to portray that here.
This is me favorite fan made docu-series. The person Anessa that created it is actually I professional editor it is what she went to school for. There was more I wanted to day but now I forgot...haha anyway, can't wait for the next episode. I also just subscribed to your channel a couple days ago and love your reactions. I see some people already explained the age thing. I want to add some context to the school grades. In the US, grades 1~12, usually (some school districts differ) elementary is 1~6, middle school is 7~8 (2 grades), high-school is 9~12 (4 grades). However in major Asian countries (again, it differs in some, but I know for sure for Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, and likely same for China), that middle school and high-school are both 3 years. So middle is 7~9, high is 10~12. So when they talked about when JK finishes middle and starts high-school, the age of finishing middle school would be = to US finishing 9th grade, which is 1st year of high-school vs 3rd year of middle school in S. Korea.
27:54 this is important‼️this is what made BTS different from the rest. Notice how the CEO Bang PD said he did not impose strict mandatory practice schedules and they were given artistic freedom compared to other trainees from the other companies...but of course the boys still practiced non stop out of their own desire to be better. We believe this is what made BTS achieved what no other Kpop group has done, Bang PD definitely trained these boys out of the standard regiment. They always had a voice and say about the music they will put out. Notice how involved especially RM and Suga on the music making process even at the beginning just how like Jimin described. :)
They did it because they wanted it so bad. Not brcause the rules are imposed for them to do better. Rules are of course still there, but the passion to do th3 best is in their own discretion. That despite their hectic schedules, they strive hard even with tint budget because again they really wanted it so so so bad. PLUS, It is very helpful that they enjoy each other's company, so i think them as a group, together, they pull themselves as one on top without leaving one hanging. They help eachother. They wont succeed if one is lacking. Jin i think has the most diffeicult time because he said he spent more time practicing for their choreos, and i think the members have been very supportive and patient towards jin (and rm lol) ❤️ that's love even outside their working sched.
JK was Probably actually 14 when he graduated middle school. Korean age is different then universal age. You are 1 when you are born and turn a year older every January.
Yes. And he was 13 when he joined Big Hit and moved into the dorm. He turned 14 a few months later.

@@LexListens I think they just created the deleted scene and bonus content separate to help keep the video short and the narrative cohesive. Buy the extra stuff too is great and part of their story.
It was those pre-debut diary logs that I came across by accident. I had been into Kpop for a few years by then, but there was something about their honesty that caught my eye. I followed them from that point and have watched them grow to where they are today. Interesting fact - did you notice there was no V logs? He was not introduced until they debuted. He was a hidden secret member. It was sad that he couldn’t be with the other guys on camera but he was usually in the room just off camera.

And the docu juxtaposes the two differences.
One has to listen carefully to what they tell you in their vlogs too. Jimin will tell you how the hyungs (older brothers) Suga and RM are so busy with their debut that they come home in the early hours of morning. This series is a long journey.

this can be overwhelming for her since she JUST started this series. since it is a very long series, i believe this is the best one to react to, it covers almost everything that the videos u recommended do. She doesn't really need to watch the other videos if she's watching this one. I also believe she's done like two of the ones you've already recommended so she's got the basics down.

I think that rise of bangtan helps to understand the difference between BTS and the other groups, why the others failed to succeed worldwide and BTS broke that mold. It's also important to note the difference between the "BIG3" and BTS, because BTS didn't have the same privilege as groups under these other big agencies and the creative freedom that BTS has was also important, they tell their own stories through their music, it feels more human.
There are people who see this and associate BTS with other groups and with "the dark side of kpop", but this fanmade documentary serves to differentiate them, they did not have a "slave contract" and what I appreciate most is that their CEO (BangPD) trusted them. They didn't debut as a superstar with money, fame and media attention, it was the opposite, they had to try 100 times harder, they are where they are today thanks to their own efforts

Don't worry, you're all good. And yes I agree with you. The people that associate BTS with the 'dark side of kpop' should watch this documentary and all the others by this professional editor
I completely understand you. BTS is the only group that’s made me so emotional. I’ve literally sobbed while listening to their songs and speeches (never done it for others, ever!) The effect they have is crazy.
Though I'm only 10 minutes in, before I forget, BTS was honored to be featured on Seo Taiji's 25th Anniversary Special called TIME TRAVELER It's an amazing show, BTS participated in all of it and there is even a behind the scenes video. Seo is old enough to be their father, but doesn't look a day older than BTS. There is a performance of 'Come Back Home' from '95 (original on TH-cam) that BTS recreated the original hip hop choreography!! They had so much honor and respect for working with this Legend. Another great song from the show is 'ClassRoom Idea'. If you care to watch, be sure to find one with English Lyrics. Seo's message about the ills of Korean education are much the same as BTS' and the song is heavy in rock and roll and rap. Enjoy! ARMY grandma
I think it says a lot about both BTS and us ARMY that we get so emotional/touched by them. I don't know about anyone else but I feel like in particular BTS display their emotions and thoughts completely raw and, while they may sometimes speak carefully for the fans, it isn't done to hide things but rather to show consideration. And I believe that people who are receptive to this, almost like it touches a part of our soul or whatever you want to call it, are people who have a lot of self-awarness and are also good, gentle people that are capable of empathy.
That's how, to me, BTS and ARMY are so linked.
The reason why I love BigHit is that, they treat trainees like an artists already.
This series is so fantastic I hope you watch it all on between other stuff. It gives SO MUCH context to their whole story
This doc is a masterpiece, not only give us the history of the boys in depth but explains a litte better the kpop industry and culture, since a lot of people starts listening to kpop through BTS, a lot of people doesn't know how it works or how everything started... I really love this series and I hope the woman the created this series (Aneesa) gets recognized by this wonderful job that she does on her FREE time (hello hybe hire this girl to make and official doc series please!!)

*The docuseries did a good job conveying what is the norm in the kpop industry (the toxic aspects) and then highlighting how BTS diverges from all of it. BTS had a lot of freedom to do whatever they wanted and convey whatever message they wanted, meanwhile other musical labels would force strict control upon their trainees/idols. BTS still worked really hard but it was more of a self-driven process to compete with the industry but not with each other. It's also unique that BigHit was tiny and basically had no trainees besides BTS, unlike other labels with 100s of trainees and everyone essentially fought for a spot to debut. The culture was very different. Think of BigHit as a tiny unicorn startup and they did everything their own way.*

She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work!
I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and followed BTS since pre-debut. She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. They remind her every day why life is worth trudging through & that she can make change as young person in todays world. This docu-series is her way of thanking them. (She shared all this on a video on her Instagram page)

Remember, Korean age is different than how we track age, so he wasn't really 16 as we would consider it internationally. His bday is Sept 1, 97, so in Feb 2013 he would have been 15.

You mentioned that the Kpop audition and training system was foreign to you, which is understandable, but aspects of this system were actually probably inspired by the American label Motown Records' “Charm School” artist development system during the 60s. Motown formed Black American artists into singing groups who were trained in choreography and performance, dressed up, taught communication skills and etiquette, etc.
While of course there are differences, Black Americans and Koreans used these systems to help them stand out in a highly competitive industry and appeal to broader markets beyond their own small markets - white Americans for Motown, non-Koreans for Kpop. SM Town, the collective of artists under SM Entertainment - the first Kpop company to adopt and develop this system for Korea in the 90s - is probably partly named after Motown. The founder of SM, Lee Sooman, stated that he based Kpop on Black music.

As other people pointed out, Korean age is counted differently. You can usually assume they're 1-2 years younger than they say (unless they specify they're talking about international age instead of Korean age)
FYI, you don't have to read the captions to us. We can see them on your screen. But if you're doing that just for yourself, then carry on! :D So, so happy you're checking out this amazing docuseries!!!

Thanks for reacting to this wonderful series. Yes, they show the vlogs along the way at the beginning. I think further on into the later chapters maybe not so much... as they got more well known I guess they had less time but it did evolve to VLIVE's and their entertainments shows like Run BTS! etc. As someone else mentioned don't forget the bonus content and the deleted scenes videos as well. The great thing about this is that it shows how BTS were different from the other groups and how Big Hit gave them freedom to choose which to me makes them more responsible and vested in their own success. Really the combo of Bang PD and the boys together made a magical combination, the result of which we see and love now. Thank goodness, can you imaging a world without BTS? horrible. Jungkook was actually around 14 here. Korean age is like 2 years ahead because when their born they are already 1 years old then on new years they celebrate their age to
In Korea, the age system is different. Jungkook most likely was 14 or 15 when he graduated as there is a 2 year age difference. On January first you immediately add a year to your age and the time you spent in the womb is also counted. For instance, if you were born on September 15, 2021, you're automatically one year old, on January 1, 2022, you will turn 2 years old.
The videos were taken in the first half of 2013 and JK was born 1997 (middle of). So he was 15.
I'm also under the impression that Korea celebrates the new year somewhen later than us at the end of January or something and so age on that day... I could be wrong about that.

@@ruthfischer7615 they celebrate two new years - january 1st and the lunar new year. the date of lunar new year changes every year in our calendar (but it is some time between late jan - late feb). because of this, jan 1st is the day that ages them, as it would be confusing for the sake of laws to age people on a different day every year (people would end up being certain ages for longer periods than other ages)
@@emilysnicketvanilla I was under the impression that the law may count the same as in the West from your birthday? It is so confusing with Jin and you know what. I'm not long enough in the fandom to have found out why and when JK celebrated becoming an adult... and weren't there two dates celebrated (one was in I believe Bon Voyage but Jimin and him had a coming of age dance another time).
That and while I tried to do research - I failed till now - I found out that the Lunar New Year is actually more important than the other one.
No shade on anyone: I'm still so confused.
(And age of consent seems to be 20 with no same age exceptions or so...)

@@ruthfischer7615 korean law kinda uses both age systems - some laws (like the enlistment one) use their international ages, while other laws use their korean age. as for coming of age, their age of consent is korean age 20 (so you become an adult when you're international 18. not on the day that you turn 18, but it occurs before you turn 19 for everyone that isn't born on january 1st, in which case it occurs on their 19th birthday). to my understanding (this has always confused me a bit too despite researching multiple times so someone please correct me if i'm wrong) they are recognized legally as adults on jan 1st, but they just celebrate it in late may, which is when the official coming of age ceremony occurs. and it's also kinda celebrated on their actual birthday that year as well. lots of different celebrations for adulthood lol

In S. Korea and some other Asian countries, middle school goes from 7th to 9th grade. High school goes from 10th to 12th grade. Like what others had commented, many Asian countries follow the lunar calendar way of counting age. You are 1 when you are born. On the lunar new year, everyone gain a year; it's a big birthday celebration. Thus, if you are born at the end of the year, on the lunar new year, you turn 2. So, JK actually was 14 and finished 9th grade in his first vlog in this documentary. Jimin and Tae were 16, even though they said that they were 18.

The Rise of Bangtan is so brilliantly made, it's really my favorite Bangtan Army-made docu series. The deleted scenes and bonus clips start from the 3rd episode, I think. It's best to watch them first before proceeding to the next chapter.
BTS is also the only group that has ever made me this emotional. I never get through any of the Rise of Bangtan episodes without laughing, crying and being amazed at just how much they've gone through and overcome.

ik i’m commenting a lot but i saw Yoongi with his arm around Jungkook and i just have to throw the cutest fact out.
Yoongi let’s jungkook do and say whatever he wants. He’s never scolded him for anything. Yoongi has in many instances been talking and jungkook is either messing up his hair or slapping the crap out of his arm and he just sits there like :] not caring. Yoongi himself has said he has never raised his voice or could ever get in a fight (yet he threw his fists up at fake zombies and stepping in front of Jimin when he thought a sasaeng was coming towards him even tho Jimin is a black belt💀)

Example: BTS were on tour and recorded a clip for the students in korea who were studying and getting ready for their tests, Namjoon told Yoongi to give some words and, Yoongi being Yoongi were telling students that’s it’s okay not to pass and that studying & tests aren’t important, but all doing so, Jungkook was pulling at his hair and messing it up😂
while Namjoon cut off Yoongi and Jimin lost his shit💀
I understand what you are saying. I was raised with my step-dad in the military so we moved alot. Some of my favorite items were those he brought home to me from overseas. I always wanted to travel but Covid hit and now I will keep myself and family close to home. But I still thoroughly enjoy learning about other cultures. BTS is a big part of fulfilling my wishes. We are able to join them on BonVoyage seasons 1-4 traveling different countries and seeing different cultures. When you watch explanation videos you start learning all the Korean cultural traditions that are in each video. Such as the bunny in the moon, in "Idol".
And my daughter and I starting learning the Korean language.

It's ok. I also don't cry easily but in this case, as a BTS fan who knows their journey very well, even short wholesome scenes about them can bring out my tears. Because they didn't get it in one snap, they worked hard for it and chased for it like there's no tomorrow. That is something we can relate, the effort and the grind to do things we love.

And I believe this part of bts has not be seen enough specifically since they have grown a lot in recent years they are treated as they have been offered by their carrier in a silver plate , but for me , as I am 40 , I feel them for having thoese dreams when you are young and wild , and tough I feel sad seeing them to be under so much pressure at a young age , it's a joy to know they have achieved what they truly deserve, this side of their story made me a fan beside enjoying their music , I hope you also enjoy and get inspiration in this all .

I know that you've probably read other's comments by now but I'll say this in case; the first episode is the story of how bighit entertainment is different from the others (especially the big 3). The trainees under bighit (bts) were given artistic freedom, they were not trained to be like others but to be themselves. I know that it was stated on the vid by bang pd himself but it was a very important point. Why they are special.
Anyways, I hope you also watch the deleted scenes after each episodes! I've watched this and will not mind watching it again. This docu series is really helpful for baby armys or even for those people who discovered them later (i joined in 2017 and I'm ecstatic that we have this kind of video to educate us about what they've been through). And the era from 2017 onwards, it was a recap for me. Like a summary of my journey with them.
I'm looking forward to episode 2! You'll tear up every episode I swear bcs some parts are tear jerkers. Through this whole rise of bangtan series, I feel like I was with them from the beginning. May it be a hardest times or joyful moments. I feel so connected with them, my heart is and will forever be. I need to sleep now though, it was fun spending the night watching your latest releases.

18:30 yes, they do that.. they have a playlist in their channel of them just talking in front of a camera, and saying what's in their mind... the latest one was SUGA when they topped the billboard last year for i guess 5 weeks at that time?
you can still watch their logs from 2013 but they don't have subtitles, i think they only put subtitles in their videos in early 2020 (they always put subtitles in their MVs at least)
so there's an ARMY channel that uploads those videos with subtitles, it's called Bangtan Subs

When Jungkook says 16… he is talking Korean age [thy do that differently] he would have been 14 or 15 by international standards. He signed at 14, moved to Seoul, the older members essentially became his parents-in-kind. This is why some groups become so close, they become family units.
All in all tho, Kpop really isn’t a joke. Not because of what they can do. But what they have to do to get to debut. There’s countless hours of training, practicing, classes, losing weight, worrying about your looks and weight, sometimes companies will even have their trainees get plastic surgery to match the beauty image rather they’re gonna debut or not.
They also don’t get paid until they pay off all the $ the company spent on them while they were trainees. That’s another thing i love about BigHit/Hybe, you don’t have to wait years and years to finally get paid after getting rid of your debt. The second you make sales, all the money goes to you (not all ofc but what you earned you get).
The K-Pop industry isn’t as dreamy as it seems. It messes with artists mentally, physically and emotionally.
Many instances artists have committed suicide. Or had to leave because of depression or anxiety. Some even get injured and either have to continue working or aren’t allowed to work at all.
Then there’s companies like JYP. They constantly bring in artists but never promote them. The artists basically have to do everything themselves while the company sits back and takes their money, and the staff treat them like shit.
Thankfully tho, there are a LOT of companies that give their artists the creative freedom to do what they want rather it be musically, or even acting or doing their side hobbies (ex: making artwork). The k-pop industry isn’t terrible, i personally think they just need to step back, reflect, and ask what THEIR artists want to do, how they’d like to be treated, and show that they’re more than just something that brings in money.

Korean age is different from international age. In Korea you are 1 year old when you are born and then everyone born in the same year turns a year older all together on New Years day so V was considered 2 years old when he was actually only 2 days old since he was born on Dec 30th. When JK says he was16 he was actually 14 in international age. He was 13 when he became a trainee and 15 when they debuted.
He would have been 15 international age at the time of the log in this video.

I remember watching funny short clip that K Armys were laughing how American pronounce the members' name and Band name in Korean" Bangtan Sonyeondan." You will be able to pick up soon correct pronunciation by watching their channel Run BTS and Bangtan TV on TH-cam. Members are calling their name each other very often and you can hear how different.

When you watch these documentaries, you should know that Korean age is couple of years older. So Jungkook graduated at 14 and he debuted at 15. Korean baby is 1 year old when it is born, and becomes 2 on the new year. So V, who was born on 30th of December, became 2 years old 2 days after he was born.

also, it’s a little joke army have about younger Jimin and Jungkook. Jungkook used to be very shy and quiet while Jimin was always loud and lovey on everyone.
People joke (even bts themselves) that Jimin loves Jungkook a little too much at that time😅he would always be clingy and goofy with Jungkook and playfully flirt. Because honestly that’s who jimin is (fun fact: bts didn’t give gifts to each other until jimin did so now it’s a habit they have).
As time went on Jungkook started doing the same to him and now, they’re always stuck at each other’s hips and it’s the cutest thing🥺their connection and relationship w each other is truly the sweetest.
So id Jimin and Taehyungs. They’re the definition of soulmates and i’m so glad they all have each other.
There’s so much to their relationship with each other and how each member connects with another in different ways to the point they will all just click together like a puzzle piece.

Please know that this series is highlighting the difference between other KPop Bands and BTS. .. PD Bang wanted to show that you didn't have to treat trainees in such a barbaric way.
The guys were able to determine how hard they worked. Remeber they also go to school. All 6 oldest members are currently getting their Masters in Advertising and Media and JungKook will also join them when he graduates university soon. The guys in BTS pushed themselves practicing up to 12-16hrs/day because they knew that's what it would take... as well as writing and composing and producing and doing variety shows, pronotions, etc, etc, etc. They never rest !!
Remember they count age different from us. Subtract a year. He was 15.
