Nanoparticles in Skincare - How can we avoid them? Should we worry?

  • Today's video is a sort of requested one! Someone asked how to find sunscreens that don't have nanoparticles/nanotechnology in them, so I've included that in this video along with what Nanotechnology is and how we can determine if there are nanoparticles in our sunscreens. Please note that I am in no way saying that Nanoparticles are dangerous - in fact the current evidence is not swayed that way - it will depend on the type of person you are as to which conclusion you come to - if you are a "live in the now" and don't worry kind of person, Nanoparticles are fine in skincare lol, but if you are like me and constantly analyse things and worry about the unknown then you might feel more comfortable avoiding them!

    This is an exceptional video Karen, thank you. I'm currently using the Simple spf but as I've posted previously, I am looking for the perfect mineral spf but haven't worried about nano or non nano before, there's so many things that can cause us issues topically or ingested that it's almost a fruitless task trying to be mindful of it, if one thing doesn't get you another will !! I've been using Australian gold (tinted) and like it but my favourite is still La Roche Posay 50spf, either tinted or non-tinted. I didn't see that one in the EWG list so thinking it might be ok. Thank you for the very informative video. I just wanted to point out that I have used the skinceuticals mineral radiance something spf 50 and do remember clearly it was written nano for titanium Dioxide. Unfortunately i am not sure about the availability of the brand ISDIN (think it is Spanish), but they do have an amazing, not tinted, mineral sunscreen without nano particles. It is called water fusion fotoprotector spf 50. It is completely undetectable, watery and amazing under makeup. Not drying, not greasy. It costs around 20 euros but online pharmacies often have sales and you can get it for about 16-17 euros. My dermatologist recommended it to me specifically saying it is formulated without nano particles in It. Again, not sure about the availability in other countries. And thank you again.

    What a fantastic video. I've been soooo curious about nanotechnology but Google research is super limited and it's hard to determine what kind of source they are. So glad you made this video. I think I will continue to use up my Sunprise sunscreen and look for something tinted. I don't wear makeup on a daily basis so a white cast is a problem for me.
    Thanks for the recommendations too.

    hi karen! sorry for the long comment....but I have been contacting several of the brands i use to enquire as to whether their products contain nanoparticles and thought you might like to join me in scratching my head at the variation in the responses! - facetheory were most helpful (if their info is correct!) they confirmed that none of their skincare contains nanoparticles and that according to EU law, the word 'nano' has to be included in the ingredients list if there are any nanoparticles in the product..... australian gold botanicals confirmed that they are pleased to announce that they dont use nanoparticles in their sunscreens....... neutrogena didnt seem to know what i was asking them, this was their reply - ''Nanoparticles can be anything around the size of inorganic molecule complexes and, naturally, all of our products contain some sort of inorganic molecule complexes at the nanoparticle scale. Do you mean microbeads? If so, since 2013 we have been working to remove polyethylene microbeads from every single product, and we’re on track to meet our commitment to be plastic microbead-free by the end of 2017'' - it seems they dont even know what year it is! lol..... i also spoke to tarte cosmetics via live chat, i asked them the burning question and got told 'no, i dont think they contain those'..... forgive me for not being convinced that they knew what i was asking! ..... hourglass cosmetics replied by just listing the ingredients in the setting powder i asked them about! how helpful!! - i am waiting to hear back from cerave and IT cosmetics, that should be interesting! - hope some of you guys find this helpful if youre looking into which products use nanoparticles! xxx

  • @peterkloostermann

    Important thing to note that the FDA doesn't have a definition for nano particles like the EU or Australia do, and also no labeling obligation. This means it is possible that american companies claim they produce non-nano sunscreens, while according EU and Australian regulations they would have to be considered nano. Paula's Choice for example has claimed to produce non-nano sunscreens, while the same product were sold as nano sunscreens in Europe. So asking a company doesn't always help. Especially smaller companies can be a bit doubtfull. And besides anything over 150nm is extremely white, so a product may use for example 110nm so it can be labelled non-nano. But yeah, this cutoff point of 100nm doesn't have much scientific background, 110nm is still small and not that different from 80nm. So far there is no research indicating either one is harmfull, at extremely high quantities Zinc Oxide can be harmfull to sea leave, research has focussed on nano particles, but studies show that the same effect is observed with non-nano sizes, but concentrations are far higher than found in nature...

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter! Yes, I did mention that the FDA doesn't define Nano but didn't make that connection that as you say, they will claim its non nano when it isn't! x

      Octocrylene is the main sunscreen in Simple but it also has Titanium Dioxide nanoparticles, and a research study on its dangers is linked in the description. Hope that helps but we must remember that everything has a risk, its about balance - I'll be finishing my Simple one. x

      Sue, I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter and yourself of course - I can totally relate to the IC as I've been tested several times but I have something with similar symptoms - OAB and bladder nerve damage - the saviour for me is Amitriptyline but it did take a few months to get over the tiredness but worth bearing with it. I also have a spray that I'd highly recommend your daughter try for pain relief - you mix one drop of lavender oil and one drop of peppermint oil (essential oils) with about 10 ml water (I use an empty glasses cleaner mini bottle from boots) - if you spray that on the Urethra it gives amazing pain relief - its the only reason I could work at NHS tbh! I keep telling my Urologist he should patent my solution. I also don't wear jeans much or go on any bicycles as that causes me pain too. Oh finally, a bath with bicarb of soda helps a bit too. Hope this helps, people always tell you Cranberry but that does nothing for those that don't have a bacterial infection! x

    Hi Karen, i really appreciate your video's, we are coming into Australian summer now and the wide variety of sunscreens are confusing. Deciem's survival range is not approved for use in Australia as a sunscreen & the new mineral one states on the website they are pending approval here. (story of our lives here with many of the products unavailable lol) Would it be because they are not classified as broad spectrum - i think all sunscreens have to be broad spectrum here. Appreciate your time. Liz :)

    Hello, thank you for the info, are you sure all powdered sun screens would have nano particles? I absolutely detest cream sunscreens and the way they clog pores and find the powdered ones much better to use. Would be very interested to hear if Derma E and Lush powdered sunshine are nano free. Thank you!

    • @TheBeautyMaverick
      @TheBeautyMaverick  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I didn't say all powdered sunscreens would have Nano in them, but all powdered sunscreens would be inhaled, and there is research that sunscreens that are inhaled are dangerous including chemical and mineral. Lush powdered sunshine has Octocrylene in it - here is a study talking about how it disrupts hormones - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4997468/ - the dermae one has Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide and I have linked research to the research relating to that - no way of knowing if Nano or not but most likely will be. x

      Ps very concerned with regards to the hormone disruptive agents. There must be a way to find a filter that is natural. I have the Badger balm by the way as I found earlier that its one of the only natural sunscreens out there but its very thick and leaves a huge white cast. Smell wonderful though!
