TR's TODD album is getting a Record Store Day release on colored vinyl this April if that kind of thing floats your boat. Last year's A Wizard A True Star was fantastic! Love 'em both.
Magnificent as always sir. My personal fave double - MSG One Night In Budokan. Been with me for 4 decades and still gets a regular airing. Also, you’ve made me get out English Settlement for todays “listening whilst working” session. I bought the box version a couple or three years back and it’s been a good while, so on it goes!
Enjoyed your video. Saw Soft Machine perform 3rd album live c1972/73. My son has a cd copy and I've listened to it a few times. Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid but thank goodness we all can't have the same musical tastes. Caravan is my favourite Canterbury band. For what it's worth, my 2 favourite double albums are "Wee Tam and the Big Huge" by the Incredible String Band and "Lubbock on Everything" by Terry Allen.
An uncertain vessel at best, the double album offered four sides, as much as an hour and a half of music, without losing too much bass, or dynamic range. Some artists couldn't fill that much vinyl, some used the medium only for live albums; the Allman Brothers Band and the Kinks included both live and studio sides. The Beatles responded to Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde with the White Album, Pink Floyd figured out how to stretch a musical narrative about alienation and the wide weird world of touring over four sides, in The Wall, completing the Dark Side saga. I couldn't figure out why I was having trouble making a list of ten, until I expanded it to twenty. The finished version provides two Top Ten lists, the A-List, and the B-List, sorta. All twenty are very, very good, the Top Ten just better. Only two of the albums on your list made it to mine, but I've been listening to rock 'n' roll since 1959, bought my first double album when Bob Dylan put out Blonde on Blonde. Thank you for viewing and sharing your own list. Some fine examples there, many of which I own and very much enjoy to this day. I think I could have stretched to 20 myself, however always feel the need to keep the vids to a certain length!
Some of my favorite double albums: (in no particular order) The White Album-The Beatles Quadrophenia-The Who Manassas-Stephen Stills Electric Ladyland-Jimi Hendrix Something/Anything-Todd R. Rock of Ages-The Band Good Bye Yellow Brick Road-Elton Four Way Street-CSN&Y Physical Graffiti-Zep
The Beatles White album is my favorite by them. I bought Third by Soft Machine when it came out because it was 2LPs for the price of one. I never really got into it. I still have it so I should give it a listen. If I did a 2LP video I would have to include Mothers of Invention/Freak Out, Rolling Stones/Exile On Main Street, and The Clash/London Calling.
Just the other day I was bidding on a copy of " 666 " eventually went for a horrendous price. Second time I have lost out on it. I too appreciate XTC, What a band!, English Settlement I own but have not played in a while. And was surprised you showed " War Of The Worlds " as just recently did a video entitled " Is There Life On Mars? " about ? you guessed it music about the planet. Talked about W.O.T.W , and yes it did seem quite frightning when I was young!. Cool vid. George.
Keep searching for 666, it'll happen. As said, it does not have to the UK press to sound good. Will check your vid and your channel in due course, sounds an interesting topic.
Really enjoyed your video, George! I picked up a nice copy of 666 the other day… it’s an Italian 2nd press like yours. Really beautiful! I’d love to pick up a copy of English Settlement… it’s another on my king wantlist! Cheers, Jack
Thanks Jack. Hope you enjoy 666 as much as I do. That pressing sounds amazing. Keep eyes peeled for English Settlement. They are still out there at the moment.
Some great choices George. Just got that Joe Jackson, it’s very good indeed. I think all the tracks were recorded in a studio with a live audience., although there is no audience appreciation on the record. You just have to play good doubles all the way through don’t you? Cheers.
Couple of doubles I like but more under the radar are Harumi S/T - great US pop psych on Verve. Experience S/T French group on Vogue - bit of everything, psych, prog, garage. Mothers Freak Out is probably my fave but most doubles could be reduced to single lps for me. Cheers Nigel
Thanks Nigel. I have Harumi, but have not spun for some time. Second disc on that is a bit 'out there'. Never heard of Experience, looks interesting. Will keep an eye out. I considered getting a Zappa album in there, but he didn't make the cut. Lots to choose from, however Freak Out is a groundbreaker of course.
@@georgeprior-vinylshowtell4934Yep, that Harumi 2nd disc is definitely out there😄. You'll love the Experience LP and not expensive either...always a bonus. Cheers Nige
i bought Quadrophenia when it came out. i would pour over the booklet and jacket for hours when listening to it. i have read when George 1st heard the original mix of the white album. he hated it and had all copies destroyed. some did escape the grinder. and fetch big$$$$. it is identified by a certain matrix # on the deadwax. cheers!
Hi George, sorry a dodgy area for me I'm afraid. I tend towards being anti-double, as I believe a band should be able to get it done in around 40 minutes in most cases. So to be a solid double album it really needs to persuade me I'm wrong. I've had or have eight of those you showed I think. I do need to revisit a few but don't think any of them are definite keepers in my collection...sorry!, cheers Dale
This seems to be a bit of a internet myth. The lighter polythene sleeves are ok for your records. The heavier duty PVC sleeves historically are the ones that may have caused some bother and that's more to do with extreme heat or dampness. UK inner sleeves with the poly liner from the 60s, such as the ones used by Decca, Polydor, Vertigo can definitely cause issues with the record. The glue and poly liner can react over the years and cause off gassing leaving fogging on the record. Some still play fine, some have hiss and it's impossible to remove the fogging. I still have some of my rarest records in those inners and not had any bad reaction.
Hi, I don't use PVC ones as a general rule. The Aphrodite's Child was in PVC for some reason and I will be swapping that out. The others are in polythene which I do not believe have this issue.
Polythene sleeves don’t give any problems. PVC sleeves wil do after 40 years, but PVC sleeves and pictures disc give me terrible issues after 2 years. Some RSD are in terrible condition now
The White Album is genius! And so is Aphrodite's Child. I have them both and listen often. Brilliant video my friend! Good taste. 🍻👍🏻

Good choices love Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds - a 70’s classic
Not a huge prog bloke but love and recognise your passion 👍

Soft Machine is well worth another go. Takes a few plays to digest, but well worth it.
I love seeing both "Third" and "Todd" in the same list- great taste sir
Thank you 🙂

Hi, I believe that it was the US Capitol press that George withdrew. I saw a vid on this here recently, but cannot remember who by.
Dillon of Noble Records did the video on the withdrawn US version, although not to say others haven't as well.
@@nigelcampag1290 That is probably where I saw it, as watch many of his vids.

Hi Dale, I can understand that they are not for everyone. I guess everyone's different listening habits very much come into play here.
change the aphrodites child sleeve before you regret damaging the cover and vinyl
i love that war of the worlds. funny thing, i bought it thinking it was JEFF LYNNS war... a bit confused at 1st... but it grew on me.
It has a bit of a dramatic ELO feel to the sleeve for sure! Amazing records.
Thanks as always for watching
Watch out those PVC sleeves, George! It damages your vinyl after a couple of years
