      How do you decode a Kwikset that is springy on all pins? I have a smart key that won't bind or give resistance under heavy tension. They're all spongy.

    this tool is underrated. Pretty satisfying when you can originate a key from an customer smart lock. I know most guys will drill this lock :(

    • @Hslk-Locksmith
      @Hslk-Locksmith  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to carefully force-over the earlier generations. More often than not they were just as reliable after as they were before. I was about to have special pricing to unlock smart key locks, but then this tool came out.

    I have this tool. I have trouble with old locks that seem to have a bunch of shit all over the inside of them. Never have a problem with brand new ones. Need more practice with it probably. Any who great video. Really good job breakin it down

      thank you! I have not come accross any smartkey locks old enough to get very dirty; they seem to break long before, but I suppose you could use some electrical contact cleaner.

      I've spent some more time messing with it. Think I made a break through which is nice. any who which camera do you have? it would be kind of cool to do it that way so the customer can see that you aren't trying to read some clearly written number or something.

    I love the science and mechanics of this. but I really don't understand how the decoder works. Is it looking into the hole (lock) and reflecting the left side of the hole? Is there a small mirror inside the blade that reflects the image to the left?

    • @Hslk-Locksmith
      @Hslk-Locksmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a great tool.
      No, the design requires the windows to be there so the pins can interface with the wafers; Short of completely redesigning the lock there is nothing that kwikset can do, although, I doubt they would if they could.

    • @skygh
      @skygh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kwikset is trying to take over the world. They messed up Baldwin badly and convinced Pella to use their locks now. And its all junkset. I have the tools I need to deal with them but have to hold my nose a lot.

    • @Hslk-Locksmith
      @Hslk-Locksmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @Cali415

    Mind me asking where you purchased that $5 scope camera?
    Also, thanks for this video! I’m going to try and replicate what you made. I bought the kwikset smart decoder for $300 and the light on it gave up on me in the middle of a job. I’d rather make something like you did for a fraction of the cost than spend over $300 for something that isn’t super reliable. Thanks again!

    • @Hslk-Locksmith
      @Hslk-Locksmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those 5% you don't have success with the tool you're probably dealing
      with a faulty cylinder. The next time I come across one I'll take a
      picture; Sometimes the wafer completely dislodges from the pin.

    • @kylecorey88
      @kylecorey88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actualy i find sometimes if someone has rekeyed it to a key that had been duplicated and the cuts i was looking was not exatly what is supposed to be. Almost like if they used a kwikset key that had a 7 cut on it. So it would make a 6 look like what its not supposed to be. That has ussually been my problem or faulty cylinder. But sometimes i got to use pliers and force it a bit. Did 3 in the past 2 days. All got first key

    • @kylecorey88
      @kylecorey88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have a 7 cut for kwikset but rarely used. And if an old kw1 was used to rekey it throws it off

    • @kylecorey88
      @kylecorey88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know that. But someone can and has rekeyed them with a precut key that had a 7 cut. Not often but i have ran into it

    I have one of those decoders. The problem I have is focus. To get the most detail I have to hold the lens about 1/2 inch away. I also set it up to use a 9v battery instead of the button batteries (you can do with a resistor or regulator). Does your focus improve 1/2 in away?

    • @Hslk-Locksmith
