      Just got a start lock pick set and I've been picking locks left and right. Then I stumbled onto this bad boy. So I'm having trouble so I thought why not look it up and found this video. When it took LPL 2 minutes to pick I knew it was time to shelf this lock for now.

      @@Dane-bootsNcatsN although these are a little tougher to single pin pick, they're super easy to rake open. I wouldn't trust it with my tools at all. I had one of these cores on my front door and raked it open first try in just a couple seconds...thats a criminals dream lock. Bosnian Bill has a video on his channel where he demonstrates how easily they're raked (which is the first thing a criminal would try) with zero skill, effort, or time involved. Watch his video and I guarantee that you won't trust this lock anymore haha.

      @mattdude ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brianfreland9065 if you’re talking about the video he uploaded six years ago, you would know that maybe then this was an issue, but by now things are different. Kwikset has changed the design of the smartkey lock since then and that likely isn’t a problem anymore. Also bosnianbill has a video from three years ago where he said how he could not pick a newer model smartkey lock. In the case of your lock at home, you likely had one of those original models that had the raking vulnerability, but a smartkey lock from today probably can’t be raked open.

      That's a really great idea! Just getting into the support, myself. I got one of the Covert Instruments' pin and tumbler practice locks and so I'm able to repin it result and choose from 1 to 6 pins. But this would be a cool lock to have to provide a bunch of different brings fit the office of one... Plus the keys you'd need, I suppose, to rekey it.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      +Potti314 Thanks. Even better, if you pick the lock, then insert a tool in the slot, it will set each position to max depth, such that the core is free spinning!

    • @tamalodg196
      @tamalodg196 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lockpickinglawyer Actually if you reset it in that way you actually break the lock, no key would work with it even a blank key would work with it. Then the ONLY way to reset it would be to get the core outta it and use the Kwikset Reset Cradle to reset it. That is as long as the shackle is open if its closed and you reset it without a key you may as well throw it in the garbage... But the reset cradle is a nifty little tool you can still rekey the lock no matter what key was used to key it, the reset cradle is designed to bypass any key used to key the locks! The Cons to doing this is you have to dismantle the lock down to its core, as only the core will fit in the reset cradle.

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tamalodg196 Being riveted together, getting the core out to fix it would basically destroy the lock. If you break it by resetting the core as described, better just to chuck it in the bucket and buy a new one. :(

    • @tamalodg196
      @tamalodg196 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mannys9130 The first generation ones come without the rivet!! I have one even, the company forgot to put the rivet in it...
      Plus using a dremel with a tiny drill bit you could EASILY drill the Rivet out... Yes i know the rivet your talking about but first you'd have to drill out the core which would be teatious, and you would have to be careful not to damage the other parts of the padlock, but you need to get to the release mechanism located on the inside of the lock to release the shackle. Then you could open the lock and then drill the rivet out that holds the core, then you could unlock it so you could insert a new core into it... Any smartkey core would fit into this lock there nothing special about them you'd just have to buy a handleset and use the core from that...
      You do need a special tool however to pop the core piece out of the handle, it's called a Cylinder Removal Tool and you can get them very cheaply or if you have seen it online you could probably make your own.
      But yeah the cores are universal so they would fit in a padlock...
      So yeah you could fix them if you didn't want to buy a whole new lock your just need to get your hands onto another SmartKey core...

    Hi Harry, We don't see these locks Downunder - as far as I know - but according to a web site I'm on, the locksmiths in the U.S. use a large collection of try out keys, all cut to half depths to open them. The other way apparently is to force a large screwdriver into the keyway, and using vice grip pliers on the blade, turn the plug, crushing the sliders. Your method makes a lot of sense, and is similar to the way we pick high security lever locks with serrations or false gates. Good to watch, and well done as usual. Regards, Brian.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brian Hignett Thanks. I had never heard of the tryout key method... any word on how effective that is? How big a set of tryout keys are we talking about? The sidebar has a tapered engagement point, so if you get the slider near the true gate it will fall in (allowing use of half cuts). By using the half cuts, I think the math works out to roughly 250 keys... Clever use of the MACs could make the number a bit smaller, but not much because of the half-cuts... so still over 200 keys. That's a great deal of trying out! I'm definitely familiar with the force method. My understanding is that you need to raise all of the sliders to the highest position by inserting the cut off end of a key blank, and then apply a great deal of turning force with a wrench. There's some videos on YT featuring a custom tool for this (look up "Smart/Dumb Key Force Tool). I also recall hearing that it only works on the early versions of this lock (something about a slider and sidebar redesign, and stronger slider material). In any case, the force method is destructive to the inside of the lock. Sometimes, the lock continues to work for a brief time, but the rekey feature is gone forever and the lock will fail, so it needs to be replaced immediately after doing it.

      +LockPickingLawyer Hi Harry, Hadn't really looked into these locks, as we don't see them. Had a look at the T bar force tool, then went to the Locksmithing site. 254 try out keys with a claimed success rate of 95%. Another locksmith is using 32 keys, with 30% success rate - not good, then he drills. I guess in the real world of lockouts, and under pressure of an unhappy customer, picking maybe difficult, but then again so can pin tumbler lock picking. I wouldn't like to stand there trying 250 odd keys - you've shown they can be picked - with practice. I guess it means how professional you want to appear in front of the public. You are inspirational! Regards, Brian.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Brian Hignett Thanks. You always bring great information and perspective to the discussion. I would be quite surprised if locksmiths were picking locks like this in the field for a couple reasons. First, it's not particularly easy under controlled/desktop circumstances. I'd imagine picking under pressure, in an awkward position, and with a customer breathing down your neck (maybe in freezing weather with numb fingers also), would be brutal. But a customer would not see it that way... if you attempted and failed to pick it, they would (quite wrongly) see the locksmith as incompetent. Second, for a locksmith, it seems to me that there isn't much incentive to pick locks like this... the unpaid time investment is huge, and the "reward" is that the locksmith makes less money on a lockout call. In that regard, consider that the alternative is drilling the lock, then selling the customer a new lock cylinder or set, spending the time to replace the cylinder (or lockset), along with rekeying and key cutting services. That adds up to quite a bill! Where's the incentive to pick? Maybe I'm being too cynical. I'm sure there are some locksmiths with a sense of professionalism and pride in their mastery of a craft such that they would rather pick the lock, but to be perfectly frank, we don't see much of that around here. The professional locksmith is quickly being replaced with truck-based rip-off artists in the US... it is really a disturbing state of affairs. Well, I seem to have gone off on a tangent. Thanks again.

    What about the new redesigned model?

  • @tamalodg196
    @tamalodg196 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The beginning versions of this lock you could get the cores out because Kwikset made a flaw, they left out the inside tiny pressed in roll pin that holds the bar inside the lock in the locked position... But if you had a earlier version you could just pull that tiny bar out and the core would drop right outta it, but Kwikset fixed this flaw on newer versions... But this pin was under the shackle so if it was locked there was no way you could get access to the tiny unlock bar... But like I say it's useless to even look in later models as they fixed this and now there's a pressed in roll pin that prevents you from getting the core out, however you could probably drill out the roll pin if you really wanted to get the core out...

    2:05 There would be pretty simple design change that could fix this attack. If the sidebar touching the slider were shaped like the bottom of letter H and true gate were wide enough to fit the whole H but false gates were spikes that go between the legs of H, the false gates and true gate would have equal width (assuming that the space between the spike and the legs of H were equal to true gate tolerance to whole width of H.
    That wouldn't prevent picking, though. Just make it a bit harder. You could still differentiate between false gate and true gate by detecting binding slider. Because true gate cannot cause slider to bind (there's no such thing as zero tolerance true gate), any slider that binding by sidebar tensioning is in false gate.

No explanation of why or how, but the comments imply that the sliders did not hold the rekeying repositioning. The early locks didn't have the roll pin in there and the could could easily just drop out.

    Dear LPL is there a way to differentiate the different GENS in the Smart Key KS locks without having to gut

  • @jastanger
    @jastanger 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know there's no easy way to gut this padlock, but I'm curious if this was the old design or the updated version that is being sold today. They changed the way the sidebar is retained. Supposedly (according to a picker on youtube who has a "pick and gut" of an old one) the new design makes it such that you can't get tension on the pins because of the bar. I don't know why you couldn't just pick the bar. Anyways, I'm a noob and I've been trying to pick this new style of SmartKey and have had no luck really setting more than one pin because of the sidebar. I would love it if someone much better than me made a video about it!

    this is driving me crazy as i raked it open once. spp is a no go. someone here mentioned that false gates acts like spools, what's your take on that?

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can often require some counter rotation, but not in the traditional sense... its more like tightening the tension and letting the slider slip a bit. It might be helpful to take a few of the sliders out and practice on one that's not fully "pinned" up.

    Great work buddy. Question, how much different is this from the U change or it is exactly the same?

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Papa Gleb Thanks. The mechanism is very different from the U Change. The U change is a standard pin tumbler lock, with telescoping key pins that can be locked at 4 different levels. They are pretty easy to pick. In contrast, the Smartkey is a slider/sidebar design, and with the false gates, it is much harder to pick IMO.

      +LockPickingLawyer that's all I needed to know. I have one of these but wasn't sure which and now I know. I don't know how you picked yours cause mine has nothing binding from the get go regardless of tension. Tried it all. It was a year ago so perhaps I should revisit it

    FANTASTIC video and picking Sir. I have a master version of one of those and for some reason the key will not work at all in it now and not sure why and when trying to pick it had no joy the other year so just left it in my picking box. I found it strange when looking in key way as pins looked like wafers but cannot remember as was that long ago I played with it.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +waddac2 Thanks. I'll have to pick up a used rim cylinder (pretty common in the US) and do another video with a gutting so you can see all the innards. It will be a bit of a PITA though, because these are complex little locks! You should definitely revisit your lock... its just a matter of finding the firmly bound slider and pushing it up in a controlled manner, one gate at a time. Once you get the hang of that, they open pretty fast. Good luck.

    Very cool picking! I would advice anybody that values what they are locking up DO NOT buy this lock. It is garbage on a forced entry attack. "wafers" are frail. I have work will these lock many times.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +LOST FOUND Thanks. As for the forced entry, the early versions of this lock were pretty bad, as can be seen on a few TH-cam videos. Later versions are significantly improved in resisting the force attack... sidebar redesign and new slider material.

    I don't know how many times I've watched videos on this lock. Still can't get an open. Pretty sure the trick is in the tensioning. Just watched it while looking at nothing but his finger applying tension. Still no open. Great padlock. LPL makes it look easy, IT'S NOT.
