Just for the record, there's a whole community of people trying to beat sm64 with as little "A presses" as possible. It seems like when new things are discovered they send it to pannenkoek and he makes a video documenting it. They've been doing it for years now and is something still happening. If nothing else, it's just really cool seeing people break down the coding and figuring things like this out. I love it when people understand how a game works and use its flaws against it. Also, I'm sure he did it on an emulator, so he probably sped up the emulator so that 12 hours was like 12 minutes.
Shimmering Bass It’s done tool-assisted, so he’s not actually pressing buttons, but is instead writing a bot to do it for him. This allows his inputs to be frame-perfect.
I was mentioning what a TAS is not for you, but for anyone who happened to read that comment. As RarityDash is a (mostly) non-gaming channel, I suspect that there are plenty of people who are unfamiliar with the term.
While Pannenkoek and the rest of the ABC crew do extensively use emulators when testing/scripting routes, they very specifically make sure that anything they work out is verified on a real, live Nintendo 64 with an authentic version of Mario 64 (specifically the original release of the JP version of the game). These days they do Twitch Streams of the console verification and then upload the video to youtube for documentation purposes. So yes, he did use an emulator, but when those 12 hours elapse, that's all video editing. The actual console verification video of the strategy isn't available (they were a bit sloppy with console verification six years ago) but there is an actual console verification video for a faster version of this star that they later found, and it's a full five-and-a-half hours long: th-cam.com/video/w_8rurxBUYc/w-d-xo.html
"I get this star with a half an A press." - That's weird. "I transport this scuttlebug across the map." - Never mind. That's weird "I repeatedly step back and forth to load and unload the scuttlebug, causing it to rise above the ground." - Never mind. That's weird. "Now I build up infinite speed in order to teleport between multiple, parallel universes." - ....
It’s weird that some people can’t just… APPRECIATE when someone puts a humongous level of work and passion into such a mundane goal. Like sure, you yourself wouldn’t have fun performing this, but isn’t the sheer ridiculousness of how much effort he put into something so trivial at least… SLIGHTLY mentally stimulate you? TheBilateralGamer Bad Word However, everyone…! It is important to practice self awareness… and… We ARE the ones watching him watch these videos …for at least 18 minutes and 44 seconds. What are all of our lives?!
im quite certain this was only requested because "... we need to talk about parallel universes" has kinda become a pretty famous meme amongst people who both do and watch these weird mario challenges and just speedrunning in general.
I've never seen one of his videos before, but I can totally see how that line became a meme. The things you have to do to get stars like this without jumping are so delightfully ridiculous x)
It would be interesting to know if you had any experience with the game before watching this video, that could greatly change your view on something like this. A presses are used to jump, and ""Watch for rolling rocks" is a star that you'd never be expected to get without jumping since it's located at a very high altitude. So the title of this video intrigued me before it even started. And yes, the SM64-community is much more active than you might think, from speedruns to no-jump-challenges to hacking the game (which I tried myself), many people who grew up with this game are still interested in that kinda stuff.
I genuinely love this video, and I'm glad it became a meme so I could find out about it. Pannenkoek's style makes all the mad technical stuff he explains understandable, energetic, and fun. It's only natural that this became a meme, but mocking the guy misses the point. This is peak TH-cam content.
He didnt played that in realtime. He used tas (tool Assisted speedrun) tools to do that. He could exactly set which buttons are pressed in each frame and set the exactly wanted joystick coordinates for each frame. At the end he had a list for each frame and this file could be played back
I asked about the whys, once. Basically, I was told that it's a beloved game but everyone's already done everything, so this was a way to keep playing while still having a fresh challenge.

@@Atlas_Redux That's... a rather serious response to a trivial comment, but like, I _get_ why it was requested. "Isnt it more fun to just play the game" and THERE is your answer for why people do this. This game is 22 years old. Stuff like this is what people will do if they still want to get new things out of a game like that.
Are you familiar with the concepts of tool assisted speedruns and challenge runs? The satisfaction comes from beating a game with an additional challenge. In a speedrun that challenge is minimizing time, and here the challenge is to press A as little as possible. Usually the community defines what you're allowed to do because it wouldn't have been a lot of effort to mess about with the memory and just put mario right onto that star without pressing anything at all. And yes, having that one goal means sacrificing everything else if necessary. He could have pressed A just a few more times and gotten the star much faster (to be honest, that 12 hour period was probably just in the emulator and went by much faster) but time is a non factor in this run. Speedrun would be the complete opposite. Here a runner might sacrifice safety, just to gain half a second.
That long three-minute explanation and five-paragraph description just to say "It's like a no jump challenge, but you're holding the button down the whole time instead of not pressing it at all." Articulation's not all its cracked up to be.
This wasn't really your kind of video, but I loved your deadpan reaction to it. It's legitimately more complex than the physics in Steins;Gate but with fewer waifus, so I can't blame anyone for getting a bit lost.

I think it needs to be mentioned that this wasn't actually played by a human being and would probably also be impossible to (in case it wasn't obvious). This was a tool-assigned speedrun where instead of going fast the goal here is to beat the game in the least amount of A presses. Seems like a weird challenge but the fun here lies in figuring out the routes and optimisation and stuff I think.
Probably one of the strangest things to react to tbh. ^^; I like SM64, but I don’t think a speedrun/informational video reaction is necessary... 😅 Interesting reaction, I guess?...
