Here's my question and it shows why passion cannot be ignored in the equation. Cal Newport says be so good that they cannot ignore you and to master your craft. If there is no passion then where does the impetus and drive to continously put in the effort to master a certain craft come from? The problem is many people have misunderstood fleeting interest for passion. Passions for things that come and go are not actually passions but fleeting interests. Passion is much deeper it is what drives you to continously put in the effort to master a craft through all the ups and down and succcesses and failures. Passion and effort and mastery are all intertwined. Lacking any one of them makes the other two legs much weaker.

In an era where quality seems to be taking a backseat to quantity it is refreshing to hear good arguments to the contrary. Not that both sides don’t have good points the problems can escalate exponentially if we don’t keep checking for feedback in our rear view mirrors. Without the proper feedback even the most sophisticated guidance system can’t keep you on course for your target.

I’m gonna be honest, part of me believes the people that think of that about passion don’t have an specific passion (thus they just don’t have it, they wouldn’t do it just for fun actually)... Which I respect ^^ Most people I’ve met are like that. They work/do their passion because they kinda have to. They don’t do it if they’re on vacation... thus not really a passion XD
Still I like this guy 💕 I do apply his tips like the breaks where you stare at the wall ^^
Edit: Had never seen the way he phrased it this time, yes it’s true you’re not just happy of you following your passion ^^ Specially with people that don’t even have a passion yet or ever >.< Life is more than passion definitely

Funnily enough I started reading Cal Newport's book "Be So Good They Can't Ignore You" a couple hours ago and what I've seen so far (I read only 30 pages) is that he is arguing that first you get good at something and then you start enjoying whatever you are doing. Of course there is a lot more in the book, but from my own experience this seems to be solid advice.

Depends---quitting the stability to follow passion is not smart. Follow your passion. That's what the gurus say. I'm telling my own subscribers that this is bad advice. I have seen many living in their mid forties with no skills, no resources and no future because they did follow this mantra. Swell Charles, give up on your dreams you say? No. I'm saying to be smart about it. You don't just pick a job that you would do for free and that is usually the arts. Like Stephen King--he could have retired in the 1980s but still writes--because he would write anyway. But most artists don't make the big time. So if you have this burning passion that is in the small percentage of making it, by all means do that---on the side. But keep a day job and that job can be a cousin of what you would do for free. For example, maybe you are an oil paint artist at heart. But your day job is a graphic designer. Or you are that actor. You day job is teaching high school drama--or advance to teach college drama. See? You do the next best thing to "your passion" that pays the bills decently. That's how you negotiate the thing you would do for free where there is risk vs quitting your day job to leap off the cliff not knowing if the water is below. Hope this helps someone---Charles
