    1. If someone is painting or drawing a portrait it is not a "self-portrait". It would be a self-portrait if you are painting yourself.
    2. It is extremely rude, especially in France, to ask a person how much they sell.

Really expected you to just shit on these people. Pretty refreshing to see you comming away without any hostility. Slightly overpriced but not really a scam. Pretty geunine, good content, world needs more of this and less of the other shit.

I'm from Paris, I used to live in the 18th district (where Montmartre is located) for basically 15 years, I was a mailman in Montmartre. These guys are legit, but some aren't, those who aren't legit are the one wandering around without a designated spot to draw. These ones are scammers and they charge an awful lot of money for shitty drawings.
Also, if you plan on visiting Montmartre, or Paris in general, and planning on taking a tour guide you must avoid those websites offering free tours. Their guides aren't qualified, they don't know shit about anything and at the end of the so-called "free tour" you're basically forced to pay 20€ minimum which is costlier than hiring a real tour guide that actually knows his history.

Unfortunately where I live I would have no audience in street. I would love to be able to sell 2 paintings 70 euro each per day (yes I can do that, but I work with oils)

I was there last year. They are making a living. Buy what you want. I liked the place and the artists were very nice. One guy did a silhouette for free for me.

Having been through that area many times before, I observed that most of the art is "bad," as subjective as that may be- but that isn't the point anyway- it's a business and the artists are smart enough to balance what appears attractive to the average tourist and what can be executed with speed. While the pieces aren't prints, they are certainly done essentially on autopilot, with the designer creating the same image, same framing and colors over and over again. The colors are harsh- usually straight from the tube for ease of finish, but that saturated pop has appeal to the tourist who want a luggage packable sized canvas to remember their trip with. It's a harmless, fun and probably satisfying way for these people to make a living.

There's not an agenda behind everything. These people like to paint and draw and decide to make a bit of money from it, they probably are retired though or this is their side hustle. Like guy in red shirt said, 'if you paint for the right reason, you will sell. people will see you're paintings are not printed or made somewhere else.'

My mom's an oil painter so I understand... some are there purely for the love of art. But more than ever, there are scams all across paris, especially in this area. There were a couple shots I didnt include because their energy was just awful!

@@timcha0 That's great to have an artist in the family! Your footage was really interesting, never seen all that before. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few scammers. Were they just selling things other people had made or?

Woman are far far easier to draw/paint. Anyone that have went deep into portraiture knows it. Woman skin is smoother and their proportions are more standadized ... so you need to maek far less corrections and checks when painting a woman (Specially young ones)
