How To Use A Massage Gun On Shin Splints | Physical Therapist Teaches

  • Massage guns are all the rage in the DIY/at-home health and healing community. In the last year, we've seen tons of companies develop their own versions of the massage gun. But with their growing popularity, most people still don't completely understand why these percussive instruments even work. Using your massage gun mindfully is having an understanding of what muscles need to be RELEASED and which need to be SIMULATED or ACTIVATED. Using it in the proper direction for the proper muscle is key to seeing a long-term improvement (and not just a short-term relief). Discover the two general rules for using a massage gun and, more specifically, my favorite way to use it on SHIN SPLINTS!

Listen... This method right here saved me from failing my physical fitness test for the Air Force!!! I've been having nagging shin splints for months and I tried to run through them but couldn't... I did this method the day before and right before I ran my test not knowing if it would work. I ran my test feeling as if I never had shin splints ever I couldn't believe it! Thank you for this video absolutely amazing 👏 👍

Ok but… There’s no significant difference in force application based on direction. I’m not an expert on biomechanics, but this is a pretty basic physics problem. The gun provides a fast individual instances of force in a single direction. And you don’t change the angle significantly (if at all) based on which way you’re moving the gun. And the head doesn’t hit your leg for long enough to apply a significant sideways force (Or the gun would be much harder to pull). Ima need a breakdown of the biomechanics of why the proximal vs distal motion (in ANY scenario.) would cause a significant differences in muscle size (you mention shortening the muscle), let alone the tiny amount you’re applying, also if it can turned on and off like a switch, how does it maintain during running?
Edit: also what is “activation”… like… contraction? Or is a shorter muscle “active”. Is it contracted more because you pressed on it in a specific direction? Don’t get me wrong, The message gun is a great tool, but I am genuinely lost on your directional details.

I'm currently going through physical therapy for Shin splints. Did a navy prt last summer for the first time in 2 years and (embarrassingly) I did horrible on the run. I almost wanted to cry because of the pain and shame I had being broken. Didn't even get to do anything cool. I'm still working on it though. It's annoying and depressing and I'm trying so hard to fix this.

Question about injury. I was out of shape an ran too much. My anterior? Muscles always cramp and splint up. Ended up with a line of pain in the mid/lower area. If the muscle runs north and south, the pain is a thin line that runs east and west. I feel it with my fingers, and every so often it's a sharp pain, focused on that line, just when walking.
Will massaging that help or hinder?

It's weird, for me the massage gun felt super natural to use. Just feel around where tight spots are, focus on them (not too hard) and within a few seconds you'll have release. It shouldn't hurt is what I've figured out. It's weird, for 10+ years I've had tight muscles (hamstrings, hip flexors, calves etc.) and within 2 sessions they were completely gone to the point where I'm wondering if my massage gun is broken or I simply don't have knots anymore. I'm just poking into my muscles every day and can't find any more knots. Not even a good physio doing manual release has gotten me anywhere close to these results.
