I don't give a flying fuck what anyone says or thinks. The music in the 70's was the best . Album comes out ,Band tours throw in a bunch festival and the ladies never wore bras. It was the best time ever. Plus no freaking cell phones an ticket prices were dirt cheap

I was there. It was two weeks before I shipped out to army basic training in August 74. I remember the long traffic jam getting in to get a parking space and I remember Black Oak opening with this tune during their performance. BOA was the best band there for sure. I seen BOA again about one week after I got out of the army in 77 down at Myrtle Beach. Good times back in those days and no one cared if you were democrat or republican.

Somewhere in that mass of humanity am I, up from Gastonia for the show - strutting my 20 year old self around and checking out the girls & freaks - lots of freaks - smoking, tripping. I also made it to Rockingham Speedway in '72 for BOA, James Gang, Alice Cooper and others. Some wild days that seemed to never end. But, time waits for no man. It's all but a faded memory now.

It was the most fascinating 3 days of music, sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll. 9 of us traveled there in a rented Winnebago, after dropping some acid in Indianapolis, and drove there, got in free after telling the guys at the gate we were the roadies for the Eagles (who didn't show up) we plugged into the stage for the entire concert, sold about 250 hits of acid and had the time of our lives. Glad you were there too !

"The Dork" as the band called Aldridge on an album cover is indeed a legend. People always bring up Bonham, Peart, Moon et al in most discussions about greatest this or that when it comes to drummers. Tommy is a pure Rock drummer with power, groove, feel, flash and technical ability that even some of the aforementioned didn't have as much of in all categories, yet still get the accolades Aldridge doesn't. The Dork was way above the class of musicians BOA had to offer. Not that they were bad, just not in the same stratosphere as he is. He was the piece that really helped vault BOA into super stardom, like Peart did with Rush ( not comparing BOA to Rush). Jim Dandy's schtick was only going to get them so far. "Hey Ya'll" is still my favorite BOA tune. Followed by "Hot and Nasty". Aldridge did that so much better than Wayne Evans.

Was '74 the year that a security guard was killed and ZZ Top donated $10,000 dollars to his family? This concert was born from what started as Big WAYS 61 radio concerts called BWB # whatever (Big WAYS Birthday concerts) and finally Memorial Stadium could never dream of holding the crowd.

BUT MAN, were there some great concerts that came through that town, mainly the Old Coliseum, Park center, and Memorial stadium. As a kid from the middle of nowhere, BFE country in Pennsyvania, I loved Charlotte back then, there was literally NO TRAFFIC till 87-88. Some of the coolest people, a Mecca if Martial arts and musicians. Reliable music had a battle of the bands that could've went on to become a great tradition, but the store folded not long after Metal did. God do I miss that time and that place! I wasn't at this concert but on July 4th 1976 "Our Nation's Bicentennial" I was at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Rapid City watching REO Speedwagon, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, BOA with Ruby Starr For some reason (Probably leafy and Green and very potent from Columbia possibly) and 43 years of time. Other than BOA and Heart any other bands I listed I think that was who also played, any others that might have played seem to not pop into my brain, but I do remember Heart was the last band. The day before no one had heard of them, after the concert Heart was all over the radio. They played the entire Dreamboat Annie Album Live, both Ann and Nancy very slim and beautiful wearing Gypsy style dresses while they performed. "A Vision of Splendor" Those are memories engrained forever. Black Oak put on a great show, Ruby and Jim really played the Kissing Cousins routine very well, rubbing up against each other, the Mike stands etc. Kissing seductively and that was the image they were going for, they weren't related at all but they made you think they were. Like they wanted everyone to get the wrong impression (Taboo Forbidden Fruit) Great music from a great band as well. Ruby did her "Maybe I'm Amazed" Cover better than I've every heard it before, really wish I could have had the Tech back then to plug into the soundboard and be able to video everything in HD. Never heard McCartney ever do it better! Here is a link to BOA's website: www.blackoakarkansas.net/ and a link to a live performance I believe the first half is : Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and the second half is from Cal Jam in 1974. th-cam.com/video/1FK1yci_gIo/w-d-xo.html&start_radio=1&t=20 and of course and old BOA Standard "Lord Have Mercy On My Soul" Studio Version: th-cam.com/video/fCgs8KMU-nI/w-d-xo.html And a Tribute to Ruby Star Video: th-cam.com/video/NhzTQk7eOiE/w-d-xo.html So My Friends who enjoy "Black Oak Arkansas" I hope you enjoy these videos. Jr. in high school. I was there.
August Jam was an outdoor concert held on Saturday, August 10, 1974, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, in the United States. The concert promoter was Kaleidoscope Productions and it was sponsored by radio stations WAYS and WROQ. The concert featured The Allman Brothers Band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, PFM, Grinderswitch. The Eagles were booked to play, but canceled. It was the largest concert ever held in the state of North Carolina and one of the largest in the U.S. at that time, with an estimated attendance in excess of 300,000.

They are my favorite southern rock band but that might have a thing or two to do with me growing up at the lake of the Ozarks in the 1970s , they actually played the rodeo grounds in camdenton the town I lived in , believe it was 1973 . I was eight years old I don't really have much memory of it but dad listened to them. Alot . Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot would be my other two . I can't say I'm much of a Skynyrd fan other than maybe give me back my bullets and needle and the spoon.

This song is from their 'Street Party" LP. It has August Jam footage and crowd noise added. Artists included Allman Brothers, Emerson, Lake & Palmer along with many southern rock bands. Eagles were slated but were a no-show. I was there and it was an experience. BOA was a great boogie band. The drummer (Tommy Aldridge) played with Ozzy, Pat Travers still plays in WhiteSnake. Hope this helps.Take care.

I've never seen a group do that kind of sound with a set of tower speakers out in the audience to give you the true sound of stereo...............It was absolutely unbelievable.....I wish I could talk to people that had been at that concert.........If there is anyone out there that has been there...please write me...I would love to hear from you....and just to let everyone know...that at the time...that was the largest audience ever for a concert...over 250,000...supposedly bigger than Woodstock. Yes, there have been bigger audiences since then, but at the time this was the biggest. What a concert...Allman Brothers came out about 2 in the morning and played forever, just like all the long concerts that they are known for. When I left the concert on early Sunday morning I was so wore out...I was completely exhausted...I'll never forget that day!!!!

I went there too, got there a week a head of time. We were on the road hitch hiking from the Sedalia, Mo. concert.
We stayed in the vegetable stand right across from the speedway. That was our home from the 9 days we were there.
We had no money so we hired on to set up a huge circus tent at the speedway. The tent turned out to be the biggest head shop I've ever seen.
The radio station from the area, the head D.J. set up and donated his house for the many people around there for people to sleep, eat and party. It was a cool thing to do and everyone there respected his property for the few hundred that used it.
Some really cool bands played there. I just remember a few. Emerson Lake and Palmer, and the Almond Brothers.
