April 23, 1974 Green Bay, WI Montrose w/Sammy Hagar, REO Speedwagon and headliners....the incredible Black Oak Arkansas. Jim Dandy proudly introduced "Hotrod" and proclaimed, "I ain't talking about no car, neither. The crowd went nuts and my religious date almost died. LOL Great times! Thanks BOA!
Take me back to the 60's and 70's. I remember Black Oak at the Warehouse in New Orleans, many, many times. The greatest. There was nothing like Jim Dandy at the time. Its sad we have to get old. These were the best of times. Take Me Back.
Think I saw them in late 70’s @ a live rock n’ roll venue in Tulsa where new & upcoming bands would “get their feet wet”, can still picture them, wild memory haha. Guys from my HS had a band and could play just like “Kansas” could
They are my favorite southern rock band but that might have a thing or two to do with me growing up at the lake of the Ozarks in the 1970s , they actually played the rodeo grounds in camdenton the town I lived in , believe it was 1973 . I was eight years old I don't really have much memory of it but dad listened to them. Alot . Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot would be my other two . I can't say I'm much of a Skynyrd fan other than maybe give me back my bullets and needle and the spoon.
I don't give a flying fuck what anyone says or thinks. The music in the 70's was the best . Album comes out ,Band tours throw in a bunch festival and the ladies never wore bras. It was the best time ever. Plus no freaking cell phones an ticket prices were dirt cheap
I’m 16, living in Charlotte, and dreaming about what an incredible time the 70s would have been to grow up in. Unfortunately kids my age seem to have forgotten the greats
I grew up here in Charlotte and my 7th grade social studies teacher (1982) told me about this specific concert. Aside from that, Charlotte has a very rich history of our own talent. You seem interested, talk to folks between the ages of 45-77. They have great stories.

Damm right, this and Hee Haw. They can tell you all the guest stars of that show. Now it's time for the grand kids, ha ha ha ha ha, take that my lovely wife.
Although I lived only a few miles from the speedway, I was unable to make it. My question is to anyone that was there. Was '74 the year that a security guard was killed and ZZ Top donated $10,000 dollars to his family? This concert was born from what started as Big WAYS 61 radio concerts called BWB # whatever (Big WAYS Birthday concerts) and finally Memorial Stadium could never dream of holding the crowd.
"The Dork" as the band called Aldridge on an album cover is indeed a legend. People always bring up Bonham, Peart, Moon et al in most discussions about greatest this or that when it comes to drummers. Tommy is a pure Rock drummer with power, groove, feel, flash and technical ability that even some of the aforementioned didn't have as much of in all categories, yet still get the accolades Aldridge doesn't. The Dork was way above the class of musicians BOA had to offer. Not that they were bad, just not in the same stratosphere as he is. He was the piece that really helped vault BOA into super stardom, like Peart did with Rush ( not comparing BOA to Rush). Jim Dandy's schtick was only going to get them so far. "Hey Ya'll" is still my favorite BOA tune. Followed by "Hot and Nasty". Aldridge did that so much better than Wayne Evans.
I thought that was him. He was at his best on Pat Travers' "Go for What You Know" live LP. Saw him live with Ozzy and Jake E. Lee back in the 80s. Played a solo with his hands...crazy talented.
I was there. It was two weeks before I shipped out to army basic training in August 74. I remember the long traffic jam getting in to get a parking space and I remember Black Oak opening with this tune during their performance. BOA was the best band there for sure. I seen BOA again about one week after I got out of the army in 77 down at Myrtle Beach. Good times back in those days and no one cared if you were democrat or republican.

@@alexkx8599 Sure, festivals from coast to coast for much of the 70s. I can't explain it, just sharing my experiences. Rock was big business in those days, tickets cheap for the entertainment value you got, not so much anymore - too corporate controlled.
It was the most fascinating 3 days of music, sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll. 9 of us traveled there in a rented Winnebago, after dropping some acid in Indianapolis, and drove there, got in free after telling the guys at the gate we were the roadies for the Eagles (who didn't show up) we plugged into the stage for the entire concert, sold about 250 hits of acid and had the time of our lives. I also saw them at the Rockingham speedway a year or two earlier with 3 Dog Night, Alice Cooper, James Gang, Big Bertha and I can't remember who else. Crazy years they were. I might be wrong, but I was thinking Marshall Tucker played here that evening. Mostly, I remember some great music, lots of cute girls and some fine weed.
I was 22...a soldier....YEOWW....Good to find someone who was there to....often I ask myself....where are all the thousands of people today...by the way....We had to hitchhike back to Ft Jackson...Our old car just gave up its soul....66 yrs old....and those were the best of all!
Fine & cheap.....$20 a white man's oz (Blk oz's were smaller)....Found a20 bill....my guardian angel was looking out for me that day.....even fond a hole in the fence to crawl through....understand....them days soldiers made about $50a week..
Are you on Facebook? I have a private page for people who were there.

Parents should have never allowed me to go!
Even a native, lifelong California resident misses it! Most authentic rock ever! LS, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, BOA, Outlaws, et al…
I'm still here. Long time fan

We arrived at Charlotte Motor Speedway around 9 pm... There were fewer than 1000 people on site.I fell asleep in the grandstand around 1 am. When I woke up, the infield and a large portion of the stands were filled. Emerson, Lake & Palmer were outstanding..! By the way, the concert was labeled "August Jam". Jim Dandy to the rescue....
