I had a fussy client when doing children's book illustrations. The client wanted characters moved around (dramatically). Long story short the fussiness pushed me (in a good way) as an artist, and I learned to have more value in my work.

Im a artist (3 years of experience) and the problem is my work takes A LOT of time- my work takes from 3-8 hours, and one drawing I did for a contest was 12 hours that was a full body, colored and detailed and it was a wolf which I dont usually draw- but minimum wage here is 7.25 ,so I am not sure.. I think I should do 2$ a hour? Q-Q opinion?

    • @sophiesmileSTK
      @sophiesmileSTK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

Sarah Lovesundertale hi! I think your work is definitely worth way more than $2 an hour. But if you’re worried about the price of a fully coloured complicated drawing, maybe offer people “sketch” or “portrait” commissions as well, that will take less time and give people some choice on how much they want to spend? Hope that helps! ❤️❤️

Very good and in depth video! I haven't done commissions in years and it helps me keep in mind things i may have forgotten.
A few remarks on this i personally don't agree with though:
7:53 i don't recommend that. A commission is basically the customer deciding what you draw next, but the picture belongs to you. That's why commissions aren't expensive (compared to other types of projects). You NEED them to have more presence online and show examples of what you do. I really recommend to say upfront that you WILL publish it. You should make them pay extra for not posting it instead. (I personally add 50% of the price)
13:53 i think it's best to be upfront and just tell them you don't feel comfortable with it (and potentially why, so that they get an idea why you don't like it, and learn more about your preferences from it)
It avoids risking being caught in a lie (i know it's not a big lie but people can be put off by something this simple) which could affect your reputation (which is very very important when doing commissions - people talk, and i sometimes hear about customer's experiences with commissions, people will be more likely to commission someone that seems nice and upfront rather than someone they're not sure they can trust - there is a social involvment in commissions. I've had a customer keep commissioning me because of our interactions - without it getting personal btw)
It is also helpful to perhaps orient that customer to a different type of idea and still commission you. I've had a person or 2 i told i was not comfortable drawing specific things and they eventually settled on a different idea because they really wanted to commission me
That said these are not rules, just what i think are things to keep in mind

The first time I posted something I was 10 and I got 100 followers in a week (on Instagram), I got about 100 dollars in 1 month by doing commissions. Number one tip: FIRST GET A FOLLOWING THEN DO COMMISSIONS.
You should at least have 500 followers to do commissions, because who is going to commission someone with 5 followers? Also, you should have at least 30 posts so people can look at your art to see if they really want to spend money. This helps a lot and I reccommend it.

Well if I sold my art for minimum wage, then I would be getting either 9$ or 18$ every time I draw.
(I draw extremely quickly, but don’t worry I still put much thought into it. Results still come out very good at least in my opinion)
So for a full body in that perspective would be 9-18$?
Cause I honestly feel like my art isn’t worth that much, some people have told me I should sell for only 2-5$ (kinda hurt...)

Hannah M my mother is involved with my paypal and runs the account since im underaged, so you should definitely have a guardian to help you with it! im not old enough for my mom to say im 'responsible with money' since after all, i do commissions so i can spend money on cosplay. not something shes proud of but at least i have a job so im not a disappointment 😔👊

Hey- I'm late like, 2 years, but I have a question: If, for example, I open 2 commissions, should I work on 2 at the same time (Like finish one sketch and go to work immediately on the sketch of the other commission)? Or can I also work on one commission at a time (Only start working on the second when the first is completely finished)?

I'm late as well but i recommend doing one at a time and not the two at a time thing - the art that both of them would have commissioned may not be as high quality as when you do one at a time

Please make sure you request a commission from a good and trustful artist.
Ordered one over a MONTH ago and haven't recieved anything other than a sketch. I paid for full color, detailed background and characters...
No they're not busy cause they have enough time to post brand new OCs they're working on, video game edits of this artist playing with their friends. This isn't a damn painting I ordered either so there's no reason to justify taking over a month..
I'm so pissed, cause this is my money. I'm recieving 0 updates from this person by the way. Placed an order April 18 and it's currently May 17 and all I have is a rough sketch. FML

I see artists saying they started commissioning when they were in their teens and below 18. What I don’t get is that they all used PayPal which you have to be 18 for. I heard scary stories about lying about your age but idk what to think about it. I’m below 18 and I really want to start commissions but idk if I have to wait or if it’s no biggie.
